Kelvin Osei-Addo scored another well taken goal to give us the lead in the 1st half. I’ve always been honest with Kelvin and to say there was a lot of eyebrows raised when I signed and then re-signed Kelvin would be an understatement!

“i was delighted with the result against fromasWakeringgreataswelltheperformanceallourlads.”

Welcome to the management, players, committee, and supporters from Tring Athletic. We are expecting a very different game from our previous encounter with Tring back in December. Tring went on an excellent run after our game that saw them finish well in the league and win a cup competition. They have had some very good results in preseason so today will present a tough challenge for us. Ryan has assembled a good squad with some excellent players in the group, so we are aware of the challenge ahead of us. We come into the game off the back of a really pleasing result against Great Wakering Rovers that saw us progress in the FA Cup. We have the next round at home on Sunday 21st August at 3pm and hope we will be well supported again in our quest for the next round. Whilst the FA cup is exciting, we look no further ahead than today’s game.

I was delighted with the result against Great Wakering as well as the performance from all our lads. I felt we started slowly for the first 10 minutes which saw them hit the post from a long range shot that gave us a warning. From that moment on we took control of the game and full credit to my players we were excellent. I thought we created some excellent chances, and the only minor criticism was we weren’t more clinical and ruthless to seal the game earlier. 2-0 leads are never easy to relax no matter how in control of the game you are. It takes one mistake, a set play, or a goal out of nowhere and the whole dynamic of the game changes.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3

I’m so proud of how Kelvin has started this season. He worked incredibly hard over the close season and has scored in every game he has played for us since his return. I remember watching Kelvin 10 years ago and was always impressed with him and know there is even more to come from him. He could have had more goals already to his name and with the belief I have in him I have no doubts he will continue to find the net. Remell Stirling scored his 4th of the season inclusive of pre-season with an excellent dink over the onrushing Goalkeeper. Anyone who saw the celebrations after that goal knows how much this group is together. It took all my years of grappling experience to avoid going over when I was bundled by the entire group. We had so many more chances to score and put the game to bed after the goal but just couldn’t kill the game off. Connor Coulson was alert to pull off a good save from a set play. Every dead ball situation they had went into our box and once again like the game against Potton we were big, strong, and resolute. Terrence Muchineripi made an outstanding last-ditch block and put his body on the line to keep our clean sheet. Every single player on the day delivered. We looked incredibly solid, dangerous when going forward and the desire shown from every single player was incredible. I don’t want to go into depth on every single player’s performance as I never like to give away anything to future opposition teams but suffice to say I’ve been delighted with every one of my players in the last 2 games. The depth is really pleasing in the squad now and we have some key players to come back into contention. When you think on Saturday, we were missing Jamie Nicholls, Liam McCrohan, Charlie Jones, Tom Bryant, Isaac Olaleye, Harry Beaumont, and Dylan Baker from the Starting 11 it speaks volumes of our squad depth. I have said it before so many times that one man’s disappointment is another man’s opportunity. We are 2 games into the season and every player in our squad will have a big part to play this season. The way we train means that every player every week gets their chance to impress. The desire from each player to hold onto their shirt is big and my hope is that intensity continues. We are certainly not getting carried away with our 1st 2 results. The next game is always the biggest of the season and that is certainly the case today. We need to replicate our first 2 performances to ensure we give ourselves a chance of winning. It’s the oldest cliche in football but we never look further ahead than our next Thankgame.you to all the supporters who attended on Saturday. We have a run of home games now for the rest of this month, so I hope we continue to have your Enjoysupport.thegame. Joe Deeney

Good afternoon, everyone and welcome to today’s SSML Premier division match against local neighbours, Tring Athletic. It’s an especially warm welcome (no pun intended) to Ryan Sturges, the Tring Manager, who many of you will remember was our Assistant Manager for nearly two years between 2019 and 2021. “Sturge” was hugely popular with all of us during his time at the Club before stretching his wings and taking up the role of Manager at the club where he had played for so many seasons. We enjoyed two good games last season against Tring and won both games. The first of those on a Tuesday night in late September where a Dan Trif goal at the back post was enough to secure all three points. It kept Caretaker Manager Anthony Christophi’s 100%-win record intact and Anthony’s return to Creasey Park in the close season to re-join Joe & Kyle’s coaching team was great news. Welcome back Anthony. Last Saturday 175 of you witnessed a great game of FA Cup football against higher ranked opposition. Great Wakering Rovers battled right to the very last kick of the match and secured our passport into the next round where we will face fellow Step 5 club, West Essex FC, who play in the Essex Senior ILeague.wrote in the programme notes for the Great Wakering match about what I believe is the unfairness of pairing clubs with such big distances between them. Despite the gate being 175 we didn’t take enough on the gate to cover the match expenses, pitch hire, match officials’ fees and GWRFC travel costs meant that we were approximately £250 short of what we needed to break even.

Two items of good news which I’m especially pleased about. Firstly, with the growing number of overseas owners, we’ve appointed Jeffrey Roy as our International Supporters’ Ambassador. You’ll see the Regiment display the Halifax Wanderers flag along with our own at matches. We’ve got owners now in the USA, Cameroon, Romania, Australia as well as Canada. Jeffrey will be keeping in regular contact with them all as well as promoting the Club in North America.

There is great interest abroad in fan owned English Clubs. Be honest, how many of you have heard of Caledonian Braves FC? One of my “other jobs” as Club Secretary is reviewing the flood of applications, we receive from aspiring players looking to join the Club.

A couple of years ago I was reading the CV of one player who said he’d played for Caledonian Braves.I was just about to bin his application on the grounds of making up an imaginary club, when I thought I ought to check first. Sure enough, Caledonian Braves existed and what’s more had hundreds of paid-up members not only in Scotland but also in over 30 countries. If Caledonian Braves FC can do it, why can’t we. And the answer of course is we can do, and we are doing, and Jeffrey is the man who will be spearheading the push for more overseas supporters to sign up and become owners. Back home, we featured in the August 8th Edition of The Big Issue as one of the fan-owned clubs, “saving football, one club at a time”. We were one of 11 clubs in the article which explained what the Club did in terms of community support for local people. “Now Dunstable Town operates walking football teams, addiction recovery support groups and sessions to tackle loneliness after years of carrying mental health charities as shirt sponsors at no charge”

Mentioned next to EFL clubs Exeter City, Newport County, and bigger non-league clubs such as FCUM, Lewes, York City & Bury AFC, it’s gratifying that all the hard work of the directors, committee and volunteers is recognized and is being talked about. On Thursday there are two events which a year ago I could only have dreamed about. In the morning Chums & Crumbs is having a belated opening party. Our local MP, Andrew Selous and Mayor, Liz Jones will be attending as will other guests from the council & health and social care organisations. We’ve been supporting people at Chums and Crumbs with our Social Prescriber colleagues for six months now and the testimonies we’ve received from people who have come to the group show just what a lifeline it has been to many Inpeople.the evening our Walking Football team travel to Milton Keynes for our first away match. With numbers now approaching 150 every month and an additional session for people with learning difficulties, great praise must go to Ian Bateman for his wonderful management of the group. Thanks as always for your incredible support.

Tring Athletic Youth FC was formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed towards the purchase of 3.4 acres at Miswell Lane. The cost of providing changing rooms, fencing, equipment, and ownership of the ground was approximately £2,000, a lot of money in those days. Committee members, players and friends carried out most of the work, including the building of the changing rooms and during the early days the team had to play on another pitch in Tring. Originally the Club was formed to provide football for youngsters aged under 21 and despite playing against adult teams they won many trophies in the West Herts Saturday League during the early 1960’s including the Division 1 title 3 times in 5 years. In the mid-seventies the Miswell Lane ground was sold to the Council, and they had a bad time and but for the efforts of a few loyal members would have certainly folded. The Reserves were disbanded, and the First Team dropped down to Division 3. In 1988 they joined the South Midlands and as a result gained senior status with the Herts FA. In 1989 they entered a 3-year ground sharing arrangement with Isthmian League side Tring Town moving back to Miswell Lane in 1992 where the Reserves had continued to play. They established themselves in the South Midlands by gaining promotion to the newly formed Senior Division in In1993.1996/97 they led the Senior Division throughout the season and looked favourites to win the title. However, some unlucky defeats in the last few games saw them drop down to 3rd place. In addition to their impressive league form they also had some terrific cup runs during that season, reaching the semifinal of the Herts Charity Shield and winning the prestigious St. Marys Cup, the first time they had ever achieved such heights. In 1997/98 they just missed out on the Senior Division title by the narrowest of margins to New Bradwell St Peter - a goal difference of just 2! They finished the season in fine style, suffering just 1 defeat in their last 21 league games which included a terrific run of 14 straight wins for which they won a special award from the League. In 1998/99 they picked up their first major South Midlands trophy when they won the Senior Division Cup. They also won the St Marys Cup for the 2nd time in 3 years. In the league a terrific run of just 1 defeat in their last 28 games saw them finish in 3rd place, 4 points behind champions Holmer Green. During this magnificent run they went 15 hours without conceding a goal. The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. During the summer they spent over £50k on building new changing rooms and extending the social and bar area. That meant a total of over £90k had been spent on improving the facilities at Miswell Lane since 1993. The season turned out to be the most successful in the Club’s history. In addition to winning the Senior Division title by 11 points they also reached

2008/9 saw the club crowned Treble Winners - SSMFL Challenge Trophy Winners - defeating Chalfont St Peter by 3-2 at Harefield United’s ground to lift this trophy in their first appearance in the final of this competiton. 5 finals. They won the Herts Charity Shield, Herts Senior Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in its inaugural year. After finishing the old millennium in style, they continued their success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The Reserves won the League title, and a newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) they won the Herts Charity Shield for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. More success followed as they capture the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to become the first club to do so. They finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12 major trophies in 7 years. They were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the Followingclub. their failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane they entered an historic alliance with Tring Town to play their first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in place. The focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down in March 2003. New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in the Premier Division and won the St Mary’s Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. They were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A Vase for the first time.

The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference.

Hempstead’s ground to lift this trophy for the 4th time. After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the First Team finished without a trophy however they finished third in the league, the highest position in the Club’s history. The Club also received the higher ground grading required should they be in a promotion position, so the foundations had been laid for the future. The managers and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in season 2010/11. The following season the First team finished in the highest position, runners up to Chalfont St Peter in the SSMFL Premier Division, in their history so far. They also won the St. Mary’s Cup for the fifth time, defeating Leverstock Green 2-1 after extra time. The season finished with a 2-0 defeat to Royston Town in the South Midland Floodlight Cup Final. A mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay. In the F A Vase they lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the League they finished just below halfway. 2019/20 will go down in history, both in the nations and the clubs, as a season that was not completed due to a worldwide virus, CORONA VIRUS. When the season was drawn to an early close the First Team were in second place in the Premier Division and it was also memorable, in so far as, a complete team, management and players, departed and a new Committee was formed following an Extraordinary Meeting in February 2020.

Benji Crilley was a deserved man of the matchCrilley was outstanding but truth be told all the Dunstable players were excellent, were at their best and played their part in a fine victory which could and probably should have been more emphatic than the two goal margin suggested. Alfie Osborne wore the Captain’s armband in the absence of Jamie “Jammers” Nicholls. Osborne, a summer signing from neighbours, Leighton Town, was everywhere. Busy, industrious, breaking up play and finding the right pass. A real captain’s performance. Having survived the visitors’ initial forays Kelvin Osei-Addo had two attempts in two minutes bravely saved by goalkeeper Harry Fairs and Perry Dunn, whose shot had hit the post in the 4th Theminute.Blues went ahead on 35 minutes following a superb ball from Tolu Ikuyinminu. Kelvin Osei-Addo finishing off in confident style. On 43 minutes a perfect pass from J’Ardell Stirling sent Kelvin through on goal again. Unselfishly he chose to square the ball, but the chance went Sixbegging.minutes into the second half and Head Coach, Joe Deeney, replaced Kelvin Osei-Addo with Remell Stirling. Both players have been in great form pre-season bagging goals every time they’ve played. It took our 19 year old protégé only four minutes to get on the score sheet as he netted from close range to double the lead. The assist, for the second time in the match, from Tolu Ikuyinminu. Tolu joined the Club during the summer from Buckingham Athletic and already looks at home. With the ball at his feet you can sense the crowd’s anticipation that this skillful magician will conjure up some mercurial delights. Great Wakering Rovers were not lying down and Coulson needed to be alert and react quickly to a drive on the hour mark. With 10 minutes to go the dangerous Eusebio Da Silva headed wide from a cross out on the right. A minute later Coulson again saved well to keep the visitors out. It was end to end stuff and typical Cup excitement. A Joe Sellers-West cross found Remell Stirling but he couldn’t keep his shot down, then Sellers-West found himself denied twice by some brave defending. A late substitution saw Harry Beaumont replace Kyle Faulkner as the Blues saw the final minutes out without any late Adrama.very satisfying and deserved victory for the Blues. Great Wakering Rovers played their part in making this a fine advert for the non-league game, and we wish them well for the coming season.

38 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs TRiNG ATHLETiC

Last season I was lucky enough to be in Budapest watching league leaders Ferencvaros host 2nd place Kisivadas. In the 30th minute of the game, after a patient move upfield the home side won a corner. Prior to the kick being taken the referee was asked to come to the side line and review a decision that had been spotted by the VAR team. He subsequently awarded a penalty kick, to the away side, for an offence, unseen by most in the stadium that had occurred over 4 minutes previously. The away side said thank you and converted the spot kick to give them an unlikely lead. VAR has changed top level football but in terms of penalties, has it made it more equitable? During the 2020-21 season in the Premier League a record 124 penalties were given – 50% higher in the 2017-18 season, the season prior to the introduction of the VAR. So, whilst VAR has changed the picture, so too has the concept of having penalty specialists, both as takers and savers. In the 2019 Carabao Cup Final, with the game between Man City and Chelsea heading for penalties Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga defied manager Maurizio Sarri and refused to be substituted for Willy Caballero. The keeper saved one penalty out of five, but City still won 5-4. Lightning does strike twice as we saw in the 2022 final, when once again Chelsea lost on spot kicks, with Kepa Arrizabalaga given his chance to remain on the pitch. However, he failed to save any of the 11 Liverpool spot kicks then when it came to his turn to take one as the last outfield player, he blasted the ball high into the fans behind the goal. Back in the 2014 World Cup the opposite happened. Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal substituted his goal keeper in the 120th minute of the game versus Costa Rica.

Fans and pundits were aghast that he took off Jasper Cillessen and replaced him with Newcastle United’s Tim Krul, especially as Krul’s record in saving penalties was average at best. Krul saved two penalties in the shoot-out, the Dutch won and Van Gaal was heralded as a tactical genius. Interestingly Stuart Fuller is the creator of the award winning website ‘The Ball Is Round’

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 39

enough, in the next game, the SemiFinal against Argentina also went to penalties and Krul wasn’t deployed. The Dutch lost. Coincidence?

In his 2014 book, Think like a Freak, U.S. Economist Steven Levitt examined the odds on scoring based on how the penalty is taken. 75% of penalty kicks taken at the professional and semi- professional levels are scored. If a keeper guesses the right side of the goal then the odds fall to just 40%. Whilst the best option is to hit the ball into the corners, the chance of missing rises dramatically. The Economists data set suggests that keepers move to the left on 57% of penalties and to the right on 41%, which means you stand a much higher chance of scoring if you hit it down the middle, yet less than 20% of penalty takers ever plan to put the ball straight down the middle. Some penalty takers have legendary status. Antonin Panenka won the 1976 European Championships for Czechoslovakia with what would be called today “an audacious chip” against West Germany. West Ham’s teenage full back Ray Stewart kept his nerve to equalise at Wembley Stadium with the final kick of the 1981 League Cup Final against the legendary Liverpool side. Stewart scored 81 out of 86 spot kicks during his West Ham career, whilst he netted 3 out the 5 remaining kicks from the rebound. Fellow Hammers full-back Julian Dicks adopted the same “smash it down the middle” style during his career, scoring 35 out of 38. Southampton’s most famous son, Matt Le Tissier, went one step better than Dicks and Stewart, scoring 47 out of 48 spot kicks. In the 1980/81 season, Bobby Robson had assembled one of the best squads English football ever seen. British players such as Terry Butcher, Russell Osman, John Wark and Paul Mariner were combined with the skills of the Dutch duo, Arnold Muhren and Frans Thijssen. The Blues came within a whisker of the league title, a FA Cup semi-final but on the bridesmaid tag to one side by capturing the UEFA Cup. In March of that season they beat Manchester United 6-0 - a score that could have been so much worse if the United keeper Gary Bailey hadn’t saved three Ipswich penalties. But you cannot talk about Ipswich and penalty saved without mentioning Paul Cooper. In the 1979/80 season alone, the Ipswich keeper saved 8 out of the 10 penalties he faced. This was in a time when keepers weren’t even allowed to move along their line as they can today. The following season, The London Evening Standard, as it was known back then, arranged a competition between Cooper and Ray Stewart for charity. Stewart scored 6 out of 10 - less than his normal success rate but still faring better than some of Cooper’s other opponents. Of course we could write a whole story about other England players misses. Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle in the 1990 World Cup semi-final, Gareth Southgate against Germany in Euro 96 semi-final, David Batty in Japan in 2002 against Argentina, David Beckham v Portugal in 2004, Ashley Cole in 2012 against Italy in Ukraine and then Bukayo Saka in the final of UEFA 2020 against Italy at Wembley. Over 30 years of penalty shoot-out hurt. A final note on penalties to end on. The race for last season’s Isthmian Premier League Golden Boot was very much alive in the last few weeks of the season. Worthing’s Ollie Pearce lead the way with 33 goals, with Enfield Town’s Mohammadu Faal on 32 and Joe Taylor with 27. What is amazing though is that they have scored 24 penalties with a 100% success rate, underlining the importance again of having a deadly spot kick expert in your team.

Whitton United 1 Lakenheath 0 - Eastern Counties League, Premier Division Whitton is an area of Ipswich, although it was once a separate village. It is now a ward of Ipswich Borough Council. The old village was centred on what was the main Ipswich to Norwich road. Some old buildings remain including the Whitton Maypole, a popular local pub. There was a second pub, The Crown, but this was demolished in 1994 and was replaced at the time by a Landrover sales garage. The remains of a Roman villa were excavated in 1931 and again in 1949 before residential building started. Coins were found along with a mosaic floor which is on display in Ipswich Museum. Although a Whitton United football club existed in the late 19th century, the modern club was established in 1926 and initially played on a pitch behind the Crown pub. Initial success was achieved by winning the Suffolk Minor Cup in the first season. The club won the Ipswich & District League in 1946-47 and 19474, when they also reached the final of the Suffolk Senior Cup, losing 3-1 to Lowestoft Town at Portman Road in front of 8000 spectators. Success in this competition came in 1959 and 1960, on both occasions beating Bungay Town. A third success came in 1992 with victory over Long Melford. Promotion to the Eastern Counties League was secured in 1995 and further Suffolk Senior Cup finals were won in 2011 and 2012. There were no trains from between Liverpool Street and Colchester to Ipswich which would have meant catching Central Line services to Newbury Park and then a bus to Colchester. Accordingly, I opted for an alternative route of train from Cheshunt to Cambridge followed by a train to Ipswich via Bury St Edmunds. The entire days travel cost £5:00 (thanks again Martin) with a discounted rail voucher. Ruel Fox (remember him?) is part of the set up at Whitton United, having started out there as a youngster, I met him briefly before the match and informed him that I been present at every competitive match he had played for Tottenham Hotspur. His immediate response was to offer me a refund! The walk back to the railway station was slightly quicker being predominantly downhill and it was good to be able to board the warm 18:20 to Cambridge early.

King George V Playing Field is around three miles. The most direct walk takes you along Portman Road and then in a straight line along Norwich Road until you reach Whitton. There are not that many public houses along this relatively busy road. My refreshment stop was for a late breakfast at a café at a shopping area just as you enter Whitton. The floodlights are visible before you reach the ground and access is via narrow road leading to the spacious car park. When I arrived lots of cars were leaving following a junior match on an adjacent pitch outside the main ground. I was able to gain access to the ground for a photo opportunity on arrival. The main covered seated stand is situated behind the near goal, and it is at this end where the refreshment kiosk is also located. On one side of the pitch there is a small covered standing area. On the opposite side where the dug outs are located is an older covered area spanning the majority of one half of the pitch. The changing rooms are located just outside the ground. The far end of the ground is not in use for spectators. The clubhouse (bar, satellite TV, toilets etc) is situated across the car park from the ground entrance and was a welcome retreat on a cold afternoon. By contrast there was a warm welcome throughout the afternoon from the Whitton officials and volunteers. Both the hosts and visitors, Lakenheath, were in mid table prior to this match with the latter just two points ahead. Therefore, a close match was anticipated. The conditions were not suitable for good flowing football with a strong wind throughout the contest. Lakenheath, will have been disappointed not to have made the most of the first half when attacking down the slope with the wind at their backs. The solitary goal for the hosts in the second period came from a mistake and was enough to clinch the points, taking them above the visitors.
