Welcome to Ryan, his team and all associated with Tring Athletic for today’s FA Vase clash in what will be our 4th meeting with Tring Athletic this season and it’s not even Christmas! What our games with Tring have shown is they are always tight games with 1 draw and 1 win each this season. I’m sure it will be another tough game this afternoon and hopefully it’s us that progresses through to the next round.
It’s been some week for us. 2 games where we have been excellent in so many aspects of our play and yet unfortunately, we find ourselves with a league draw against Potton United and a defeat on Tuesday against AFC Dunstable.
The lads have deserved more from both games, and we have been so much better than we were a couple of weeks ago against Tring. We have been back to where we were in a lot of aspects of our play but just lacked that little bit of luck and ruthlessness in both boxes. I have seen some things in my life but Tuesday’s penalty against us left me
with no other choice but to smile at the sheer audacity of the decision.
Whilst there have been many pleasing aspects of our play in the last 2 games we still need to do better especially in the big moments of the game. A couple of excellent saves denied us at times when we were on top in both games. Goals always change games and on Tuesday AFC Dunstable rode the storm and scored at big moments in the game which I must credit them for. I felt we played at a real intensity throughout the game where we pressed them and stopped them having time on the ball. We moved the ball with a tempo and bravery and created opportunities. Fair credit to AFC Dunstable they are well organised, they play balls forward with excellent quality and make you defend. We needed to defend a lot better for the 1st goal. I was shocked to see the free kick given in the build up to the goal, I think everyone was! The ball had a lot of airtime and we should deal with it.
We made a couple of adjustments at half time and came out quickly and on
“every side remaining, will harbour ambitions and flashing thoughts of the famous wembley arch. there is a long way to go to get there. to play at wembley is every young players/ managers ambition”
the front foot. We spoke about patience on the ball and awaiting openings which we did much better in the second half. It wasn’t long before we found ourselves on levels terms. An excellent cross by Tolu was guided home by Danny Webb. I really felt at that point we would kick on and keep the pressure on. Unfortunately, not long after AFC Dunstable were awarded a penalty which the less said about the better. The penalty deflated us for a bit and AFC had some good chances to extend their lead, but we dug deep and hung in there.
The great Vince Lombardi once said, “we didn’t lose, we just ran out of time” and that is exactly how it felt. We kept going right to the death and had chances to equalise, but it wasn’t to be. I can’t fault our effort, our desire or application. We gave it everything. I hate losing games and it’s something I will never be happy or relieved about. I will say though that in the grand scheme of things it’s not a disaster. It hasn’t been lost on me that we are several league games behind everyone else and we are playing catch up already.
We face 23 league games postChristmas, and it is vital that we get a run going in the league. We have 25 league games left now and 75 points to play for so there is a lot of football left. Today however is all about the the FA Vase. Every side remaining, will harbour ambitions and flashing thoughts of the famous Wembley arch. There is a long way to go to get there. To play at Wembley is every young players/ managers ambition and the lure of that is a massive incentive for every team in the competition. We will need to play well and match the levels we have shown in the last 2 games but improve in both boxes if we are to take a step closer. I am delighted to be able to welcome Paul Reed to my coaching staff. Paul is
someone I have known for several years. He is a UEFA A licenced coach with an excellent track record of producing players at Academy level. He had a long period with Luton Town and is someone I have got to know well over the past few years. Paul brings a variety of skills to the coaching team. I am sure many of you can imagine I am not easy to work for. I am very hands on and certainly don’t like watching sessions as I prefer to deliver, but as a manager there are times, I need to be able to step back and analyse. I am also very demanding in terms of standards.
Paul will thrive in this environment I have no doubts about it. He is incredibly driven, has an outstanding work ethic and has excellent knowledge that will add to what we already have. The addition allows us to split roles into micro parts which will ultimately benefit the players. I am always seeking ways to improve and find ways to increase performance by additional 0.5% in every aspect we can. The Coaching team has clearly defined roles that will now hopefully further improve each individual facet of our game. I never believe in standing still, I am always seeking constant improvement and until the day it’s all over for me I will stop at nothing to ensure we do the best we can. I am sure you will all join me in welcoming Paul to this great club and look forward to having Paul with us.
It’s a Sunday game today and I am sure the Regiment and the Young Regiment will be in full voice roaring the lads on, in addition to so many of our loyal supporters. Hopefully we will give you loads to cheer. Keep the fantastic support coming.
Enjoy the game.
Good afternoon, everyone and welcome to Creasey Park for this afternoon’s Isuzu FA Vase 3rd round tie against Tring Athletic. This is the fourth time this season we’ve gone head-to-head with our Hertfordshire near neighbours. Currently both teams have won one match each, with one match, ending in a draw. Two teams who like to play football the right way and who have had pretty similar fortunes in League & Cup matches.
Tring’s Manager, Ryan Sturges, will need little introduction to most of you. Ryan’s time at Creasey Park as Assistant to Gareth Jackson will be remembered as the two Covid disrupted seasons. Ryan’s ability to spot local talent and bring in players was his forte and although I’ve missed two of our three encounters this season, he has the ability and backing to take Tring on to higher planes. Welcome back to
Creasey Park, Ryan and welcome also to Tring Chairman, Bob Winter, who I’ve got to know quite well recently as a result of “windowgate”. We wish all the many Tring supporters here this afternoon an enjoyable afternoon and a safe journey home at the final whistle. Wednesday evening saw us produce a strong performance against AFC Dunstable in the Beds Senior Challenge Trophy. It’s a measure of how far we’ve come in a relatively short period of time if you compare this result with the corresponding game from October 2019.The game was technically an AFC Dunstable home fixture. We were well beaten on the night. AFC ran out comfortable winners 4-0. The game attracted 135 spectators.
Not only did Wednesday’s match attract an additional 112 spectators but we also, gave a much better account of
“get behind Joe, Kyle, and the players. sing, chant, shout yourself hoarse, to be the 12th man today. we know how much it means to the players, and how it inspires and drives them on”
ourselves. We came correct and for a neutral watching the game, it might not have been an easy decision to choose which of the two teams plays a division higher.
The players from both clubs played the game in the right spirit and it was good to see the respect and friendship that exists between Joe & Steve Heath extend to the players after the game had finished.
The attendance of 247 being around our average for this season and particularly pleasing given the appeal of the FIFA World Cup.
Owners and sponsors should be receiving their invitations to the DTFC Christmas Party which takes place on Saturday 17th December. Individual Club ownership currently stands at around 140. Pre Community Benefit Society (CBS) days our Club membership stood at around 20.
There’s no doubt in my mind that taking the Club down the route of becoming a Community/Fan owned club was the correct thing to do, and I’ve been further heartened over the last couple of days by a number of enquiries from people who want to work closely with us, precisely because of our community activities.
It was also a key factor in Tandem Bank’s decision to enter into a threeyear sponsorship deal with the Club. Where the GMB & Tandem Bank have led in terms of identifying our community ethos and philosophy as being principles they also strongly identify with, others, will over time, I’m sure will follow.
The extensive research we carried out prior to committing the Club to CBS governance very strongly showed that sponsors whether they’re local or national, are far more likely to come on board if a Club is demonstrating its community credentials in practice and not just in word. We have several irons in the fire at present about increasing our community profile and our community reach and I hope to make these public very soon.
If you’re not already a DTFC Owner, you are missing out on what will be a great evening on the 17th, but also the opportunity to decide on Club policy at our AGM, and a whole host of other exclusive benefits, as well as enabling us to carry on changing peoples’ lives for the better with our programme, Improving the Lives of Others.

In the meantime, this afternoon we need all of you to get behind Joe, Kyle, and the players. Sing, chant, shout yourself hoarse, to be the 12th Man today. We know how much it means to the players, and how it inspires and drives them on, but please keep it positive and be respectful towards our Match Officials and our opponents.
Thanks as always for your incredible support.
Tring Athletic Youth FC was formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed towards the purchase of 3.4 acres at Miswell Lane. The cost of providing changing rooms, fencing, equipment, and ownership of the ground was approximately £2,000, a lot of money in those days.
Committee members, players and friends carried out most of the work, including the building of the changing rooms and during the early days the team had to play on another pitch in Tring. Originally the Club was formed to provide football for youngsters aged under 21 and despite playing against adult teams they won many trophies in the West Herts Saturday League during the early 1960’s including the Division 1 title 3 times in 5 years.
In the mid-seventies the Miswell Lane ground was sold to the Council, and they had a bad time and but for the efforts of a few loyal members would have certainly folded. The Reserves were dis-banded, and the First Team dropped down to Division 3.
In 1988 they joined the South Midlands and as a result gained senior status with the Herts FA. In 1989 they entered a 3-year ground sharing arrangement with Isthmian League side Tring Town moving back to Miswell Lane in 1992 where the Reserves had continued to play. They established themselves in the South Midlands by gaining promotion to the newly formed Senior Division in 1993.
In 1996/97 they led the Senior Division throughout the season and looked
favourites to win the title. However, some unlucky defeats in the last few games saw them drop down to 3rd place. In addition to their impressive league form they also had some terrific cup runs during that season, reaching the semifinal of the Herts Charity Shield and winning the prestigious St. Marys Cup, the first time they had ever achieved such heights.
In 1997/98 they just missed out on the Senior Division title by the narrowest of margins to New Bradwell St Peter - a goal difference of just 2! They finished the season in fine style, suffering just 1 defeat in their last 21 league games which included a terrific run of 14 straight wins for which they won a special award from the League.
In 1998/99 they picked up their first major South Midlands trophy when they won the Senior Division Cup. They also won the St Marys Cup for the 2nd time in 3 years. In the league a terrific run of just 1 defeat in their last 28 games saw them finish in 3rd place, 4 points behind champions Holmer Green. During this magnificent run they went 15 hours without conceding a goal.
The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. During the summer they spent over £50k on building new changing rooms and extending the social and bar area. That meant a total of over £90k had been spent on improving the facilities at Miswell Lane since 1993.
The season turned out to be the most successful in the Club’s history. In addition to winning the Senior Division title by 11 points they also reached
5 finals. They won the Herts Charity Shield, Herts Senior Centenary Trophy, and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in its inaugural year.
After finishing the old millennium in style, they continued their success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The Reserves won the League title, and a newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) they won the Herts Charity Shield for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1.
More success followed as they capture the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to be-come the first club to do so. They finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12 major trophies in 7 years. They were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.
Following their failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane they entered an historic alliance with Tring Town to play their first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in place. The focus
was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down in March 2003.
New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in the Premier Division and won the St Mary’s Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. They were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A Vase for the first time.
The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference. 2008/9 saw the club crowned Treble Winners - SSMFL Challenge Trophy Winners - defeating Chalfont St Peter by 3-2 at Harefield United’s ground to lift this trophy in their first appearance in the final of this competition. SSMFL Premier Division Cup Winners - Athletic defeated St Margaretsbury by 2-0 at Colney Heath’s ground to lift this trophy in their first appearance in the final. St Marys Cup Winners - Athletic defeated Leverstock Green by 2-1 at Hemel
Hempstead’s ground to lift this trophy for the 4th time.
After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the First Team finished without a trophy how-ever they finished third in the league, the highest position in the Club’s history. The Club also received the higher ground grading required should they be in a promotion position, so the foundations had been laid for the future. The managers and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in season 2010/11.
The following season the First team finished in the highest position, runners up to Chalfont St Peter in the SSMFL Premier Division, in their history so far. They also won the St. Mary’s Cup for the fifth time, defeating Leverstock Green 2-1 after extra time. The season finished with a 2-0 defeat to Royston Town in the South Midland Floodlight Cup Final.
A mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay. In the F A Vase they lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the League they finished just below halfway. 2019/20 will go down in history, both in the nations and the clubs, as a season that was not completed due to a worldwide virus, CORONA VIRUS. When the season was drawn to an early close the First Team were in second place in the Premier Division and it was also memorable, in so far as, a complete team, management and players, departed and a new Committee was formed following an Extraordinary Meeting in February 2020.

The management team adopted a new 1-4-4-1 formation with the aim of being robust to the counter attack and to deny Gold’s speedy wingers time and space.
This system also gave the opportunity to Dean to thread the ball between the lines and screen in-behind the strikers.
Town have conceded the first goal too often and this was a system to prevent that, to allow Town to grow in to the game and not be chasing the game early on. Three minutes in and was going to plan. Josh ran on to a through ball and put it between the keepers’ legs.
Town looked solid, but could not keep the Eagles out and on 14 minutes the game was all square.
Town’s response was immediate. Josh powerfully fired one in on the keeper, who could only palm it out. Scott pounced on the loose ball, bravely slide in, and converted the chance.
Six minutes later and Town added a third. Town had practiced corners in midweek and following a rehearsed set piece, Darren found himself on the back post to head Town into a comfortable half time lead.
Eleven minutes in and the team had not quite adjusted to the changes and Eagles pulled one back.
The tension did not last long and Town quickly restored the two-goal cushion. Deano’s sidewinder had the keeper beaten all ends up. It was a fantastic volley.
Four minutes from time George added the fifth. Darren’s clipped cross to the penalty spot was headed about by the Eagles’ defence and George leapt highest to head home.
As the red night sky blazed and with chants of “can we play you every week” ringing around the ground the referee brought a consummate Town performance to a end.

Twenty-six of the 64 clubs involved in the 3rd Round of the FA Vase would set a new club record in the competition if they were to make the 4th Round, and there are five ties where the winner is guaranteed to make that happen.
Royal Wootton Bassett Town host fellow Hellenic League Premier Division side Corsham Town with both clubs appearing in the 3rd Round for the second time. Pinchbeck United host St Panteleimon with neither side having gone beyond 1st Round before this season.
And Step Five side Shaftesbury FC entertain Step Six opponents Brixham FC who unlike their hosts have appeared in 3rd Round before.
Two other such ties are all Step Six affairs and both involve one of the last two debut clubs still standing as a host club. Horden Community Welfare versus Darwen FC and Hartpury University versus Bovey Tracey will result in at least two Step Six sides in the 4th Round.
Holker Old Boys, Cheadle Town, Whittlesey Athletic, Sporting Bengal United and Bury AFC are five other Step Six sides for whom a victory would also equal a record Vase run.
Bury AFC host Abbey Hey in one of only five 3rd Round ties involving clubs who’ve met in the Vase before.
Abbey Hey won 4-1 just last season on their way to a club record run of the 5th Round. Step Five side Clevedon Town beat Step Six New Milton Town 2-0 just two years ago, and Walsall Wood beat fellow Midland Football League Premier
Division side Highgate United by the same score-line just three years ago. Tring Athletic will be keen to avenge the 6-1 defeat by Dunstable Town in the Vase from 12 years ago, and both clubs will be looking to reach the 4th Round again after five years and 12 years respectively. Eastbourne Town versus Egham Town is the only tie where the clubs have met as many as two times before in the Vase. They have one win apiece but last met 32 years ago. Both are also looking to make the 4th Round for the first time in a while.
For a couple of clubs the wait to reach the 4th Round is considerably longer. Eccleshill Utd, who travel to Longridge Town, have not achieved that feat for 23 years, whilst it is 26 years since Romford last appeared in the next round, although they have only competed in the Vase 9 times since then.
There are still three former winners involved all looking to repeat that feat this season. Holders Newport Pagnell Town are joined by Deal Town and Whitley Bay, the latter club here courtesy of their 2nd Round opponents, Prestwich Heys who beat Whitley 8-7 0n penalties, being disqualified for fielding an ineligible player. Junior Dos Santos, who came on as a substitute and scored his side’s fourth penalty, had played in the 1st Qualifying Round for Burscough and was therefore cup tied.
The 3rd round is the last of the regionalised draws, with the 4th round split north and south, and from the 5th round onwards the draw will be national.

the pieman (@_therealpieman) is a tottenham hotspur fan who has attended thousands of matches and hundreds of grounds throughout the united Kingdom and europe. this week he visits cirencester town fc.
Cirencester is market town in Gloucestershire, situated 80 miles west of London. It lies on the River Churn, a tributary to the River Thames and is the largest town in the Cotswolds. The Roman name for the town was Corinium and the town’s Corinium Museum has an extensive Roman collection. Before 1974 the town was administered by Cirencester Urban District Council. Following the reorganisation of local government, the urban district council was replaced by the new Cotswold District Council. Cirencester Watermoor Railway Station was closed to passengers in 1961. The nearest station is now at Kemble, 3.7 miles away. The rock drummer Cozy Powell was born in Cirencester.
The football club was established in 1989. Progression via the Cheltenham League, and Gloucestershire Northern Senior League, saw the club become founder members of the Gloucestershire
County League in 1968. Further progression via the Hellenic League enabled the club to be promoted to the Southern League in 1996. The Gloucestershire Senior Cup was won in 1996 and this feat was repeated in 2016.
Due to ongoing issues at Harlow Town FC, the clubs were able to reverse the fixtures enabling the match to go ahead. Cirencester Town will visit Harlow in the return match next year. An added bonus for this Pieman, was that I was invited
to travel in the club secretary’s car and this was almost first time that I had travelled in an official vehicle - an exception being when I bunked on the Harlow coach at Hampton Court for five minutes on the way to Molesey in 1990. The coach was collecting players that worked in London, including the legendary Richard Head. The club secretary’s chauffer likes to support local hostelries when travelling. On this occasion he diverted to The Greyhound at Siddington, just a couple of miles from our destination. At this establishment, I enjoyed a rather good pint of Wadworth 6X (4.1%). This classic crafted amber ale is malty and fruity on the nose with a balancing hop character. Suitably refreshed we then made our way to the Corinium Stadium.
To facilitate the change of venue at short notice meant that the home club’s Development side brought forward their Hellenic League fixture against Kidlington Reserves to midday. This match was reaching its conclusion as I toured the ground taking photographs. This rather smart venue has covered seating on both sides. A larger stand straddles the halfway line on one side, whereas a smaller smart stand forms part of the extensive clubhouse building. There is also covered standing area behind one of the goals. Other facilities
include the clubhouse bar, a club shop and the snack bar, where I purchased and soon demolished ‘The Centurian’ –a double burger, lettuce, cheese, onion all topped with a hash brown!
In blustery conditions both teams cancelled each other out for most of the contest. However, a red card for Harlow Town’s Josh Steele with over an hour left to play meant it was going to be a testing time for the visitors for the remainder of the match. The referee was keen to remind us that he was in charge and the higher quota of yellow cards issued to both sides did not reflect the nature of this match, which was played in good spirit.
The home side eventually made the numbers count with a couple of goals in the second period, but for the majority of the second half the visitors dug in and can be proud of their resolve in difficult circumstances. Once again, we were made to feel welcome by a club in this neck of the woods – very friendly folk. This Pieman won the matchday raffle which included a large bottle of fizz (I almost dropped it, much to the amusement of club officials!). With a national rail strike taking place I am most grateful to those Harveys for getting me to and from Gloucestershire.

address: Second Meadow, Fairfield Road, Biggleswade, SG18 0AA website: www.biggleswadeutd.com twitter: @biggleswadeutd
From A1 Biggleswade roundabout (Sainsburys). Go over the river bridge. At the next mini roundabout take the first left into Sun Street, then next left into Fairfield Road. Proceed to the end of the road and into the Lane. Ground is at the end of the lane.
There are a couple of routes to this game. After getting to Bedford station via Luton on the train, a 30-minute bus ride on the 74 to Hitchin will drop you within a 10-minute walk of the ground.
Alternatively, a train from Hitchin will get you to Biggleswade station, which is approximately a mile from the ground, giving you ample opportunity to visit the pubs below.
There are several pubs on the High Street including Wetherspoons Crown Hotel, a converted coaching inn, the White Hart, purported to be the oldest pub in town, and the oak beamed Golden Pheasant. Any or all, are worth the trip.
ex on the pitch: Lee Roache joined the club in 2011 with a goalscoring pedigree from spells at Barnet and Cambridge City.
