FROM THE BOARDROOM Good afternoon and welcome to Creasey Park . We welcome the players, officials and supporters of Welwyn Garden City for this important fixture. We will looking to repeat the result from earlier in the season with a win. First things first. Many congratulations to the players and staff of our Development Team . On Wednesday evening at Kempston they took on Henlow in the Intermediate Cup Final and came away with a richly deserved 1-0 victory. The intensity, movement and skill of the boys was much in evidence and they gave their more experienced opponents a really torrid evening. We were set up to be on the front foot from the start and could have been out of sight after the first 15 minutes. That said, Henlow stuck in the game, and we were grateful for a late penalty miss and a stupendous save from young Ben Lincoln to get us over the line. We are so proud of their achievements this year and it just goes to show how much can be achieved with hard work, skill and teamwork. It has given the whole club a lift. Last Saturday’s home game with Yaxley saw a much improved performance but regrettably no rewards for the boys. This was cruel ,with most people agreeing that at least a draw would have been a fair result. With other results not going our way we know that the remaining games are vital, and everybody is fully focused on the task in hand.
Today we take on Welwyn Garden City in what is obviously a key fixture. They have had some challenging times in the last few months and we know that they will be worthy opponents. Hopefully we will be coming off the back of a positive result at Coleshill and can deliver another three points this afternoon. Being the last home game of the season it is important to say thank you. Firstly, to you the supporters who have given your backing both home and away. You have been positive and vocal and I know from talking to you that you understand what we are trying to do at the club. Building a sustainable club takes time, resilience and hard work, and I am grateful to our increasing team of committee members and helpers for their selfless commitment to the cause. In addition we have coaches who give above and beyond so that we can be the best possible football club. We would have achieved very little without you. There are three key words that describe us as a club and we must not lose sight of these, namely : Community, Sustainable, Pathway. Finally, and as always, let’s really get behind Gareth and the team. Clichés aside, your vocal support this afternoon will make all the difference.
Enjoy the m atch Neil

WELWYN GARDEN CITY HISTORY Founded in 1921, when the town itself was in its infancy (the first house was completed in December 1920), Welwyn Garden City FC began by playing friendlies before being admitted to the Mid-Hertfordshire League (Division 2) for the 1922/23 season. The club then moved to the Bedfordshire & District League for one season - 1926/27 (finishing 9th of 11 teams) before joining the Spartan League for season 1927/28, where they stayed until the end of the 1934/35 season. Their first outing in the FA Amateur Cup, 1926/27, saw us lose to Wood Green after a replay in the 1st Qualifying Round. During the 1927/28 season they gained their first honour, winning the Hertfordshire FA Charity Shield, beating Hoddesdon Town 5-2. They also entered the FA Cup for the first time, losing 7-4 away to Hampstead in the 1st Qualifying Round having previously knocked out Hitchin Blue Cross and Ware in the previous rounds. Following a very successful 1934/35 season, where They achieved their highest ever league position of third place in the Spartan League Division 2 East (out of 14 teams), the club was forced to resign as it couldn’t find a suitable ground on which to play - the Club needed an enclosed ground to enable it to collect gate money, without which it was unable to cover running costs. As a consequence the club was wound up in July 1935 with debts of just over £20. This situation lasted until May 1937 when former local rivals Shredded Wheat FC,
members of the Hertfordshire County League, was wound up by the company management who were frustrated at the team not being allowed to compete in higher level leagues due to a ban on company teams at those levels. Shredded Wheat management then took the generous decision of making their football facilities available for the reestablishment of a football team in the town, which included a donation to help establish the new team. This enabled the newly-established club to re-join the Spartan League for the 1937/38 season where they finished bottom. In common with all leagues, the Spartan League was suspended in August 1939 due to the war, the club only playing one league fixture. For the remainder of the 1939/40 season they competed in the East, North & MidHertfordshire Combination and then the Hertfordshire & Bedfordshire Combination. However, the club committee was finding it increasingly difficult to raise a team and so, at a meeting held in August 1940, they decided, “to carry on with the club with the present committee”. During this time, works teams, particularly those involved in important wartime production such as Murphy’s Radio, became predominant. Their next recorded action on the pitch is from the 1944/45 season with the club competing in the Mid-Hertfordshire League and now relocated to Springfield.
WELWYN GARDEN CITY HISTORY Things returned to normality for the 1945/46 season with the club once again competing in the Spartan League, where they remained until joining the London League for the 1950/51 season. Their three season stay in the London League lasted until the end of the 1954/1955 season, when they re-joined the Spartan League, where they stayed until 1959.At this time the Club were managed by Harry Hibbs, the former England goalkeeper (25 caps), Harry being one of two exinternationals to be in charge of The Citizens, the other being Alex Massie who was capped by Scotland. In 1956 they were elected Associate Members of the Football Association. After finishing 15th (out of 16 teams) in the Spartan League their next stop was county football with a move to the Hertfordshire County League for the 1959/1960 season, where they stayed until the end of the 1969/1970 season. During this time they moved to their present home, Herns Way, in 1968 and staged their first fixture at senior level, against Knebworth in the Aubrey Cup, on the 16th November that year. In 1970 the club joined the London League for the second time in their history. However, recurring problems with the new pitch led the Hertfordshire FA to deny the club senior status and when the following season the club became a founder member of the Metropolitan London League, it was as members of the Reserve
Division 1, where They remained for two seasons before joining the South Midlands League for the 1973/74 season, winning the Premier Division championship at the first attempt - the first championship win in their history. Here they stayed for 24 seasons – their longest uninterrupted period in one league to date. In 1996/97 the club looked to local man Malcolm Doctor as manager, who the previous season had guided their archrivals Hatfield Town to second place in the South Midlands League. Everyone at the Club was optimistic about glory days returning to Herns Way. Two cup-finals were reached, the South Midlands League Challenge Trophy and the Hertfordshire FA Charity Shield but once again they missed out at the final stages. 1997/98 saw the merger of the Spartan League and the South Midlands League to form the Spartan South Midlands League, with the club joining the Premier North Division and finishing high enough (6th) to qualify for the Premier Division the following season. Guillermo Ganet was appointed manager in 2002 with the task of restoring the glory days back to the club and after two seasons steered the club back to the Premier Division. Their first season back saw them finish in third place. However, the end of the campaign saw the manager and most of the playing squad depart for Berkhamsted Town.

REPORTING IN
DUNSTABLE TOWN 1-2 YAXLEY An unseasonal hail storm half an hour before kick off left standing water on the terraces and flooded the dug outs. How many good citizens of the town this dissuaded from taking advantage of half price admission we will never know. The attendance of 107, considering the pre kick off weather was largely made up of home support, who along with the players made a very generous donation of 91 Easter Eggs which will be donated to the Childrens’ Wards at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital. Thank you all for your incredible generosity. Not in a generous mood though was the Yaxley back line. As Dunstable swept forward in the first half, taking the game to our opponents, attack after attack was repelled. On ten minutes Davide Pobbe and Saul Williams combined well to create a chance for Alex Taylor whose shot had both power and direction but was well held by Aaron Butcher in the Yaxley goal. Having seen our lads under the cosh so many times recently it was refreshing to see the Blues go on the offensive with an industrious midfield pushing forward to give the orange shirted men something to think about. A few minutes later “Follie” Agunbiade’s shot was just over, Erin Amu cleverly creating the chance on that occasion. In between these incidents the Blues had a let off at the other end when one of the Yaxley players wasted a good opportunity. On the half hour a superb cross into the box from Joe Mead invited a touch to divert it into the waiting net, but lady luck was again no where to be seen as no blue shirt could find that all important touch.
Saul Williams, on the stroke of half time, brought out a good save from Aaron Butcher, but Blues fans were generally pleased with their side’s improved performance and attacking intent, despite going in at half time goal less. Ben Collins came on at half time to replace Follie Agunbiade and with ten minutes of the second half played Saul Williams broke free and was excruciatingly inches wide from putting Dunstable a goal up. A few minutes later though and Dunstable got just reward for their patient build up and desire to move the ball quickly to feet when Saul Williams seized on a loose ball following Alex Taylor’s blocked shot, weaved his way round Butcher and on the second attempt was able to steer the ball into the net. Phones were checked to see how North Leigh were faring against Aylesbury and Kidlington against Didcot. Permutations were calculated and smiles replaced frowns. Eight minutes later and smiles disappeared as Liam Hook equalised for Yaxley. Dunstable tried to counter straight away, both Daniel Trif and Ein Amu got shots away. Gedeon Okito’s free kick needed a good save from Aaron Butcher diving to his left, and Saul Williams had a shot on target bravely blocked by a Yaxley defender. With five minutes left and thoughts of a point being scant reward for a good team performance, Charley Sanders popped up to break Dunstable hearts.

22 APRIL 1978 - FOREST GROWS INTO THE TITLE On 22 April 1978, Nottingham Forest won the league with a scoreless draw at Coventry City. They were the fifth (to date, the last) team to win the English top flight as a newly promoted team. The rise was orchestrated by the managerial team of Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, who took charge of the club in January 1975. At the time, Forest were a mid-table Division Two team whose only major honors were the 1898 and 1959 FA Cups. Although they finished sixteenth out of twenty-two teams that first season under Clough and Taylor, they ended the 1975-76 season in eighth, then claimed the last promotion spot the following year with a third-place finish. They got a strong start on their return to the top flight, winning seven of their first nine matches to take a firm grip on first place. They
remained there for the rest of the season. By the time they visited Coventry City, Forest were six points clear of second-place Everton, who had only three matches left to play (Forest had five remaining). At the time, teams earned two points for a win, so even a draw with Coventry would have put Forest out of Everton’s reach. And a draw is what they got, as the match finished 0-0 to secure Forest’s first top-flight title with four games left. Before that, Liverpool (in 1906), Everton (1932), Tottenham (1951), and Ipswich Town (1962) each had won the league as newlypromoted teams, but Forest remain the last to do it. They were also the first to do it without being promoted as Division Two champions. Their success continued under Clough and Taylor, with back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980.
