FROM THE BOARDROOM Good afternoon and welcome to Creasey Park, where today our visitors are Wembley. We trust they will have a safe and enjoyable visit to Dunstable today. At this early stage of the season, and with both sides sitting just below mid-table, three points can have a great impact on the league table. Taking into account our recent performances, I’m sure we will see another entertaining game of football today. Last week, the disappointment of a lastminute loss away to Oxhey Jets was hard to accept, for players and fans alike. With our lads pushing for a winner of their own going into stoppage time, Oxhey Jets managed to nick a third goal, but the quality of the team’s performances of late has been good, and will no doubt continue to improve. Incidentally, Wembley will also be looking to recover from a loss to Oxhey Jets, having let a 3-0 lead slip in their previous league outing, going down 3-4 in the end. As first team matters are looking bright, there is also plenty to talk about in other areas of the club, and I’ll start with the Development team. After the success of winning the FA Intermediate Challenge Cup last year, the team has had a decent start to this season too, last week getting a creditable goalless draw with top-ofthe-table Abbey Rangers. This result was sandwiched between two away victories, firstly a 2-1 win against Thatcham Town, then a 3-0 at Eversley and California, so a

big congratulations to all involved. Whilst on the subject of development, we now have our new Development Centre, which offers high-level, fun coaching for 4-6 year-olds. We are striving to continue evolving and improving the experience for our young players and their parents. We’ve also had great feedback after the rollout of our Junior Blues incentive, giving parents from the youth section various exciting discounts and deals from a great number of our partners in and around Dunstable. On another note, it’s been good to see a better level of engagement with some of our social media posts. Different clubs take different approaches to this relatively new tool, and we can attest to the fact that it takes a lot of hard work from a lot of people to produce an output of a decent standard. So a big thank you to all who put their time and efforts into the social media accounts. All that remains to say is thank you for your continued support, and let’s get behind Gareth, Ryan and the boys today, and get the three points!

WEMBLEY HISTORY Wembley Football Club was formed in 1946 following an amalgamation of various junior clubs, predominantly Sudbury Ratepayers Association and Sudbury Rangers. Nicknamed the ‘Lions’, (the symbol of the British Empire Exhibition held at Wembley in 1924/25, the emblem was also used by the local speedway and ice-hockey teams), they found a home at Vale Farm and have remained there ever since, developing a roped-off pitch into a respectable non-League football ground. Entry was immediately made into the Middlesex League. After finishing a creditable fourth in their first season they went on to win the championship in 1947/48. A further season was spent in this league before the Club progressed into the Spartan League in 1949/50. Here they stayed for two years, clinching the Western Division title in 1950/51 as a result of which they became founder members of the Delphian League. In season 1955/56 they reached the finals of both the London Senior Cup and Middlesex Senior Cup and also finished runners-up in the Delphian League. In recognition of these achievements they were invited to join the Corinthian League and subsequently vastly improved the facilities at Vale Farm. Following a quiet period the Club moved into the Athenian League (1963/64) which had absorbed both the Corinthian and Delphian Leagues to create three divisions. Wembley were placed in the middle section. Malcolm Allison (1962-1963)

and Allen Batsford (1964 -1965) were both employed as coaches by the Lions during this period, although their respective spells were brief. Both gentlemen went on to have distinguished careers elsewhere and who knows where the Club might be today had either one of them remained at Vale Farm. Wembley did manage to gain promotion to the Premier Division in 1967/68. To anticipate further progress floodlights were installed, a new clubhouse and dressingroom complex were built and eventually admission to the expanding Isthmian League was granted in 1975. Finished runners-up in their final season justified Wembley’s elevation. Wembley began their first season in the Isthmian League (1975/76) in the second division (now the first division). The closest they came to promotion to the Premier Division was in 1985/86. After completing their fixtures, Wembley headed the table only to miss out on going up by two points when both St.Albans City and Bromley won their respective games in hand. Only two teams went up in those days. Despite failing to achieve promotion, Wembley obtained some minor compensation by recording various cup successes during this period. In 1980/81 they reached the First Round Proper of the F.A. Cup for the one and only time, losing 0-3 to Enfield at Southbury Road.

WEMBLEY HISTORY The Middlesex Charity Cup was won outright for the first time in 1982/83, while the Middlesex Senior Cup was also clinched for the first time a season later with a dramatic 5-1 success over Hendon . In 1986/87 Wembley won the coveted Middlesex Cup double with final wins over Hayes in the Senior Cup and Feltham in the Charity Cup, a feat nearly repeated during the following season Both finals were lost although the disappointment was tempered by beating Brentford at Griffin Park in the semi-final of the Middlesex Charity Cup, and having the final played at Wembley Stadium. Wembley last won some silverware in 1994/95 with a 2-0 victory over Hampton in the final of the Middlesex Charity Cup. The Lions also went on to reach the second round proper of the F.A. Trophy in 1995/96 (their best run in the old F.A. Amateur Cup was also ended at the second round proper stage 1966/67 and 1968/69). However, their lengthy first division status was ended at the finish of that season when they suffered relegation into division two. By claiming third place, a quick return to the first division was achieved a season later, but their division one tenure lasted just two seasons and they relegated again at the end of 1998/99. As a result of the restructuring of the Isthmian League’s constitution, Wembley regained a berth in the first division (north) for the 2002/03 season. But they were unable to maintain their place and were demoted into the

second division at the end of that campaign. Wembley were forced to leave the Isthmian League set-up at the end of the 2005/06 season following the disbanding of the second division. They joined the Combined Counties League. A sterling effort was made to win promotion during their first season (2006/07), but ran out of steam to end the term in the third place. Apart from that, they failed to make a real impact, although they did reach the final of the Combined Counties League Cup in 2010/11, but lost to Sandhurst Town, 0-1, at Farnborough. However, after their participation in the following season’s F.A. Cup, (their Extra-Preliminary Round tie with Ascot United was covered live on Facebook) the competition sponsors, Budweiser, offered the Lions a muchpublicised deal which they could not refuse. This included the signing of several retired professionals to help the Lions progress as far as possible in the 2012/13 F.A. Cup under the guidance of Terry Venables. Unfortunately, Wembley only played 3 games before bowing out. After eight years, Wembley’s membership of the Combined Counties League was ended by a lateral move across Step Five of the non-League pyramid, They are commencing their sixth year in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division after joining in 2014/15, finishing last season’s campaign in twelfth place.

REPORTING IN

OUR ROVING REPORTER PATRICK MACKAY’S ACCOUNT OF OUR RECENT MATCH AGAINST OXHEY JETS Things started brightly for the Blues, with Andre Elliot pressuring the home defence in the second minute and winning a corner, which was only partially cleared, and with the Jets’ goalkeeper fumbling the ball under pressure from Luke Little, Chris Stapleton was on hand to put the ball into the back of the net, for his 4th goal of the season. Town’s bright start almost bore the fruit of a second goal, with Little receiving the ball on halfway with his back to goal, and managing to play the ball to Stapleton who carried it into a dangerous position, with his shot across goal going inches wide of the post. Stapleton was then able to repay the favour when he played a lovely through-ball with the outside of his right boot, but the defender was just able to stay with Little long enough to ensure he couldn’t get a clean shot away. Dunstable Town were playing with confidence, and spreading the ball around the field well, and after a high-octane first fifteen minutes, the pace settled, and Oxhey Jets gained some momentum.

swagger, and a free-kick from the touchline just after the half-hour mark dangerously floated all the way to the back-post and out, when surely any touch would have given the Jets the lead. After the break, it was the home side who started in the ascendency, carving out and spurning two good chances, before Dunstable Town retook the lead through an Evans Lamboh right-footed twenty-five-yarder. Taylor was again to the rescue for Town when an Oxhey striker received the ball twelve yards out and shot firmly, but couldn’t beat the young goalkeeper, with the follow-up being cleared away. With twenty-three minutes left to play, the referee gave another penalty to the home team, and again it was Cameron who took it, this time going down the middle, to level the game for a second time.

The referee wasn’t giving a lot to Town, and after failing to award a free-kick on the halfway line, the ball was played through to their striker, but with the crowd urging him to take it first time, he decided to take a touch, and the extra moment gave Mackenzie Taylor enough time to reposition and make a decent save.

With Adam Sawyer heading against the bar with a quarter of an hour to go, the game looked like there was a winner to be had, and Dunstable were looking to get it for themselves. But in the first minute of stoppage time, Taylor could only parry a header into the path of the onrushing Andy Brennan, who put the ball into the back of the net from close range.

A twenty-fifth minute penalty from Reece Cameron restored parity, after Adam Sawyer had produced a fantastic block minutes earlier to deny the home side again. It was now the home side’s turn to turn on the style and

‘A game of fine margins against a team playing to their capacity,’ Blues Assistant Manager Ryan Sturges said after the game. ‘Creating chances was not an issue, but we will need to be more clinical in the future.’

ALL THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE DUNSTABLE TOWN DEVELOPMENT TEAM On a cold wet September evening our Development team took on top of the table Abbey Rangers at Creasey Park. Abbey Rangers were unbeaten in five matches and had scored 30 goals, so looked a tough prospect for the emerging Blues. Dunstable Town in the same space of time had only played three matches, a loss at Harefield United in the first game of the season, and two wins against Westfield and Thatcham Town. All these were away from home and this match was their first game at Fortress Creasey. A hard fought and entertaining match saw a 0-0 draw against a good, strong and free scoring outfit and the Young Lions did us proud.

LOCAL NON-LEAGUE CHAT with Ollie Bayliss

As football fans, nothing catches our attention more than an outfield player having to go in goal! Non-league clubs can rarely afford to have a backup keeper on their books, so it’s something that happens much more frequently lower down the pyramid. The prospect of an outfield player, uncomfortably donning gloves and a slightly too large keeper jersey, is almost always entertaining, one way or another. The week before, in the Spartan Premier, Oxhey Jets mounted a remarkable comeback with an outfield player in goal. At half time the Hertfordshire side was losing 3-0 at Wembley with 2 players in the sin bin and their goalkeeper injured. Jamie Speer, the smallest player for the Jets, volunteered to put the gloves on. Not only did he make a string of saves, claim crosses and keep a second-half clean sheet, his outfield teammates mounted a remarkable comeback winning 4-3! The winning goal from Darren Brew was last kick of the game– real Roy of the Rovers stuff! Last Saturday, in the National League, Bromley defender Chris Bush was forced to go in goal after Mark Cousins was injured 2 minutes into their game at Yeovil. Bromley took the lead as Bush performed admirably keeping Yeovil out until the stroke of half time. With a draw then on the cards, his own defender scored passed him in calamitous fashion as the game descended into farce with the referee sending off all the Yeovil ball boys for time-wasting! Non-league football never fails to produce a story! Sometimes lower-league sides have to survive much more than the one game with an

outfield player between the posts. In March 2018 Biggleswade Town made national news when they were left without a goalkeeper for the remainder of the season. Injuries to Liam Gooch and Sam Donkin meant The Waders had to start winger Craig Daniels in net. He did surprisingly well for Chris Nunn’s side, helping the club pick up several creditable draws before the Southern League eventually allowed the club to sign an emergency replacement goalkeeper. Recently on the Non-League Show, I spoke to Steve Nott-Macaire. The former Holmer Green, Tring Athletic and Risborough Rangers defender spent most of his career as the designated outfield player to go in goal when required. I think at times he secretly enjoyed the opportunity to show what he could do with the gloves on. Whilst at Chalfont St Peter he played in goal for 10 games in a row when their only registered keeper was injured. His first moment between the sticks for The Saints saw him save a penalty! He joked how they’d try and not let the opposition know he wasn’t a proper keeper, but he was so well known in lower league football that it rarely worked. With the FA gradually increasing the number of substitutes on the bench and Non-league squads getting bigger, perhaps the sight of outfield players going in goal will become a less common sight in future seasons, I for one hope not though.

DUNSTABLE TOWN’S YOUNG GUNS ALL THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE DUNSTABLE TOWN YOUTH TEAMS AND COMMITTEE

Our Development centre for 4 to 6 year olds was set up by Club Welfare officer Kristy Lewington and is run by Development centre coach John Sanders who is assisted by Corin Nagle and Lewis Mills. It started in May and is very successful as we are now full on numbers. The idea is for the children to have fun and develop but also for the club to get the children ready and prepared for under 7 football. At half time John will do a little training session on the pitch with the kids which I hope they all enjoy and remember and one day hopefully we will see some of these children playing for the Blues, please give the children a cheer at half time. #

A big Happy Birthday to George Lewington, who turns 9 today. His first game watching the club was “way-back” on 20th August 2016 against Chesham United and he has been playing for the youth section for the last 3 years. George currently plays at under 9s and 10s! Congratulations Georgie Boy!

ON THIS DAY ...

by Brian Seal

5 OCTOBER 1929 - THE MYSTERY MILESTONE On 5 October 1929, somebody scored the English Football League’s 100,000th goal. But nobody is quite sure who it was. The milestone goal was the 65th one scored that day, just over 41 years after Bolton’s Kenny Davenport scored the League’s first goal on 8 September 1888. Unfortunately, it is impossible to identify the responsible individual because no records exist to indicate the timing of the scores. In all, 44 matches were played that day in the four League divisions, delivering a grand total of 150 goals. Division Three (South) delivered the most with 50, including the day’s highest tally - a 6-3 victory by Swindon Town over visiting Merthyr Town.

In Division One that day, the high-water mark was 6, set by Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-4 win at Burnley. Division Two matched that number with Blackpool’s 2-4 win at Barnsley and Notts County’s 3-3 home draw with Stoke City. Division Three (North) followed with 5, set by Darlington’s 3-2 home win over Halifax Town and Crewe Alexandra’s away win over Stockport County. Of the 44 matches played that day, only three finished as scoreless draws.
