We also arrive for today’s game with an undefeated record, and we continue to make progress. Last Saturday was a tough game for many reasons against Tring Athletic. The obvious thing was the intense heat, the changing rooms were like a sauna which always makes it tough for both teams. I was disappointed with the way we started the game; we were far too passive and never got out the blocks really. Fair credit to Tring they started the brighter and scored a well taken 1st goal early in the game. The disappointing thing from my perspective was that our midfield line was broken too easily and then we didn’t do enough to engage the opponent who finished well. We spent large parts of the 1st half too eager to force possession and at times this led to frustration and cheap possession being conceded and Tring moved the ball well when they had it. Too often in Football opposition Managers never afford opponents credit, rather focusing on their own mistakes. I have been the Manager on the receiving end of that far too often and we never get the credit my players deserve. I must give credit to Tring for the way they went about the game and credit their part in providing a tough test. 2nd half we made some changes, some forced and some tactical to give us greater control in the game. Tring had an excellent move right at the start of the 2nd half that culminated in them hitting the post which really would have given us a mountain to climb. “last saturday was a tough game for many reasons against tring Athletic. the obvious thing was the intense heat, the changing rooms were like a sauna which always makes it tough for both teams.”

Welcome to the management, players, committee, and supporters from West Essex ahead of today’s FA Cup clash. West Essex come into the game on excellent form having won their last 3 games. The opposition will be tough, and we will need to implement our game plan to ensure it is us that progress to the next round of the competition.

Joe Deeney

Shortly afterwards we found ourselves back in the game with an equaliser by Tolu Ikuyinminu. Tolu peeled off well at the back post, took a touch before sliding the ball into the bottom corner. Shortly after the introduction of Kelvin Osei-Addo we went ahead. Kelvin once again this season showed excellent composure to steady himself and place the ball high into the corner of the net. We certainly weren’t at our best on the day and with the heat taking its toll on both teams I felt it was going to be one of those games where we weren’t great but managed to win. Despite a lot of possession from Tring Connor wasn’t overly tested in the final quarter. Mistakes happen at all levels of the game and unfortunately into stoppage time a mix up between a few of our lads led to Tring equalising. It felt like a gut punch having been close to the 3 points so almost feels like a loss. I must make it clear that our supporters since our arrival have been brilliant. I was however disappointed with some of the negative and poor comments from a minority on Saturday aimed at my players. We all get frustrated, although no-one gets more frustrated than me. We all have opinions and as supporters it is imperative that you continue to get behind the team. None of my players are “poor” nor are any of my players “lazy” so found these comments disappointing. We do not sign bad attitudes or bad people. If supporters fully understood the dedication my players show and the immense sacrifices, they make for this badge you would be as truly humbled as I am to have them in my group. The group travels vast amounts of miles, race around to get to training early, give everything they have and not one of our players is here for the money. The group I inherited last October and ultimately released quickly into my arrival didn’t share an ounce of the dedication this group shows. It’s been a drastic turnaround. It will not be perfect every week of course it won’t. Everything that goes wrong on the pitch is 100% at my door and I will take the criticism. Those that have got to know me know that I live and breathe the game and my sole responsibility is to win. If one of my players gives the ball away, then please understand that is on me and not on them. I am solely responsible for everything tactical. My job is to win games of football it is as simple as that. My group is together and as a Manager I love them all, they are great people who give everything for me and for the club. Of course, I criticise certain things, name me a manager who doesn’t! Ultimately, I will always be judged on results. The vast majority support us in the right way and whilst it might sound like I am moaning, I am simply reminding everyone about positive support. Please direct all criticism at me and not my players and continue to encourage and support these lads that give everything for us. It’s hard enough with me on their case without others doing the same. I look forward to another tough game today and hopefully keep our run going and hope I can continue to rely on the support we have had to date. Remember whatever the outcome it certainly won’t be through a lack of effort. Enjoy the game.

Joe’s plans and instructions for the Everyplayers.week now during the season there are Tuesday evening zoom sessions for the players looking back at highlights from Saturday’s match to review what worked well and what didn’t. Where and how can we improve, where we think we can get that additional 1% advantage over our opponents. Thursday evenings, two hours on the ATP, training. In all weathers, to prepare for Saturday’s match, and for what? Petrol money basically.

I don’t use the word “privilege” lightly, but it is a genuine privilege to be able to see at close quarters the preparation that goes on behind the scenes. Forensic analysis and meticulous detail hardly do it justice.

Welcome everyone to Creasey Park for this afternoon’s Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round tie against West Essex FC. Our visitors currently sit top of the Step 5 Essex Senior League and have a 100% win record so far this season. A special welcome therefore to the players, coaching staff, committee and supporters of our visitors who we hope have an enjoyable afternoon in our company and a safe journey home. We’re expecting a tough game this afternoon and hope we get through to the next round. Win, lose or draw though I know our management team will have prepared as thoroughly as they can.

Joe & Kyle’s first match in charge was away at Harefield in October last year. Steve, the kitman, and I walked into the away changing room over two hours before kickoff to deliver the kit and were greeted by a scene I’d never witnessed before. Page after page after page of A4 paper with diagrams and instructions sellotaped to the walls, over 40 of them.

Like many of you I watched Joe’s Weekly Roundup on DTFCTV on Thursday night and felt sad and let down by one or two of our supporters who clearly felt enabled to criticise the performance of some of our players during last Saturday’s game against Tring. How sad that some of our own supporters believe that the way to motivate and improve performance is to criticise our own players. That’s just not on. Moan to me or Matt or Gary if you want to but if you can’t encourage and support the players, please drive past Creasey Park at 3pm on Saturday afternoons as the supporters we want are the ones who get behind the lads, all of them and all of the time, not just when they’re playing well or winning. On a happier note, there were three special events that took place in a 24 hour period between Wednesday and Thursday evenings. First up were Ayub Nabongo’s U18’s who impressed a crowd of 83 on Wednesday evening in the 1st Qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup. Despite surrendering a two goal lead by the half hour mark they eased past March Town Utd 5-2. Denis scored four goals, two free kicks and two penalties before Axel bent a ferocious shot into the bottom left hand corner with five minutes remaining. The lads have a home tie in the next round when Rothwell Corinthians visit Creasey Park on Wednesday 31st TheAugust.second special event took place on Thursday morning when 30 people attended Chums and Crumbs to belatedly celebrate its opening on March 10th. Since then we’ve supported over 200 people. Local MP Andrew Selous & Mayor, Liz Jones were among the invited guests who joined in a session of chair yoga and exercises followed by a game or two of bingo. Chums & crumbs is a collaborative venture with the Social Prescribers at Titan PCN & Stevenage Leisure Ltd and forms part of the range of free activities the Club provides as part of our CBS programme, Improving the Lives of Others. Lee Nutley runs the group on behalf of the Club and deserves all our thanks and praise. The third and final special event was our Walking Football Team captained by Director of Partnerships, Neil Barker, playing their first friendly match in the new kit, kindly provided by sponsors the Asda Foundation.

The lads lost 4-3 on Thursday evening away in MK against a team who have been together for 9 years. There was very little to choose between the two sides, so huge credit goes to Ian Bateman, absent on the evening, for his coaching and organizational skills in making sure the seven sessions every month go smoothly. A reminder that the next Community session of Walking Football is on ATP 1 on Wednesday 24th August between 11 and 12pm. Open to all and free of Nextcharge.Sunday we play Crawley Green in the FA Vase. Kick off is 3pm and normal admission prices apply. Season Tickets and Owners’ complimentary tickets cannot be used for this match. Thanks as always for your incredible support.

borders Chingford to the north, Snaresbrook and South Woodford to the east, Leyton and Leytonstone to the south, and Tottenham to the west. At the 2011 census, the town had a population of approximately 109,424. To the north of the town is the former Walthamstow Stadium, which was considered an East End landmark. The town is served by five railway stations, including Walthamstow Central and Blackhorse Road interchange stations on the Victoria line of the London TheUnderground.clubcaters for players of all ages and abilities with 2 senior sides, 3 veteran’s sides, 2 Sunday teams and a successful and rapidly expanding Colts section. The 1st team entered into a ground share agreement with Barking FC and played home games at Barking’s stadium near Mayesbrook Park during 2015/16 season. The Reserves and Vets sides continued to use the Rolls Sports Ground in Highams Park. The brainchild of former West Essex Cricket Club stalwart John Spinks, West Essex FC formed in 1989. Initially the objective was to keep some of the Cricket Club members in touch throughout the winter and generate a bit of much-needed income through the club bar on a Saturday afternoon. After 4 seasons of considerable success in the Ilford & District League, an ‘A’ team was added for the 1993-94 season and the 1st & Reserve teams moved to the Essex Business Houses League. As they entered the new millennium, founder John Spinks left for the Emerald Isle and current Chairman Stuart Higson took over the day to day running of the club. The junior and Veterans sections continued to perform well, but success was harder to come by for the senior sides. In 2007-08, the 1st XI effectively folded, and the club ran one senior side which finished rock-bottom of the EBHFL Division 1. Towards the end of that season, Gary Lefley became involved with the side. Gary forged a strong partnership with existing player/ manager Dan Reading and their first full season together proved to be a very successful one as West Essex lifted the EBHFL Division 1 title in 2008-09. With success came an influx of new players and they were fortunate enough to reinstate the Reserve team who, under the guidance of Wesley Sotherton, won a trophy in their first season. The resulting celebrations culminated in them actually losing the trophy, but that’s a story for another day. At the end of the 2009-10 season, the management took the decision to withdraw the 1st XI from the Essex Business Houses League and move them to the Middlesex County Football League. The season that followed will

12 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs WEST ESSEx live long in the memory as, in May 2011, it culminated with another trophy being added to the cabinet as West Essex were crowned champions of the MCFL Division 1 Central & East. Promoted as Champions, in August 2011 West Essex had their first taste of Step 7 Football. Despite the season being blighted by injuries and suspensions, they finished it stationed safely in midtable and took a few memorable scalps along the way. Further progress was made in 2012/13 as West Essex consolidated their MCFL Premier Division status with another mid-table finish, but with a larger points total and a better record in all departments. Towards the end of the season new coach Kwame Kwateng joined with a view to adding some style to their obvious substance. 2013/14 was a memorable season for the club. Injuries, poor form, and some appalling luck saw them staring down the barrel of relegation at the turn of the year. Thankfully, due in no small part to the tireless work of one of the most enthusiastic coaches around and a return to fitness of some key players, a team which had such obvious potential finally started to deliver. A fantastic run of form saw them finish the season sitting comfortably in mid-table and emerging victorious in the Alec Smith Premier Division Cup final. Lifting the trophy was an incredible achievement for everyone involved with West Essex FC and that Spring evening in Uxbridge will live long in the memory. In 2014/15, they continued to make progress by attaining their highest ever MCFL Premier Division finish of 6th. gaining more points, scored more goals, and conceded less than in any previous season. In 2015/16, with their ground-share agreement in place, they took the decision to apply for promotion from the MCFL. they didn’t lose a game from August 8th until January 2nd which included a run of 11 straight victories but couldn’t shake off their fellow title chasers and promotion candidates. A successful run in the Essex Premier Cup nearly derailed their league campaign and their second appearance in 3 years in the Alec Smith Cup Final, you might argue, was another unwanted distraction. They lost the Alec Smith Final on pens having been 2 nil up with less than 30 mins to go. On the coach back from the final, devastated as they were, a chorus of “WE’RE GONNA WIN THE LEAGUE!!” broke out. 14 days later, that’s exactly T he las T five games W es T essex w0-5 A l4-1 A w2-1 H w2-1 H w6-1 H

what they did. After losing to New Hanford on April 9th, they took 23 of the 27 points available to take the title, and were crowned champions of the MCFL Premier Division. In doing so, they guaranteed promotion to the Essex Senior League.

The summer of 2020 will never be forgotten for a number of reasons, but it will be particularly significant in their history as it saw the formal merger of their Junior and Senior Football Clubs into one ‘new’ club. West Essex FC, as a new ‘through’ club now gives a structured pathway for children aged from 4 years, all the way through to the Senior 1st XI and covers all related areas of community football. This new structure works perfectly with their club coaches who are active in the LBWF wider schools community, providing football activities in schools across the borough.

Perhaps as important, is the bringing together of the key committee members of junior and senior football into one new and expanded club committee. This gives the club the opportunity to leverage a vast skillset of a fully committed team, all of whom have incredible experience, knowledge and understanding of grassroots football. Mark Penfold, previously Chairman and founder of the junior football operation, now assumes the position of West Essex FC Chairman. In 2021, West Essex entered a ground sharing agreement with Walthamstow to use Wadham Lodge as their home ground.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 33 ssmfl premier divisio N

There was a very welcome return from the bench for Liam McCrohan who replaced Kyle Davison-Gordon in between the two Dunstable goals. McCrohan has not featured for the Blues since a nasty head injury in the final pre-season friendly away at Luton Town U18’s last month.

A point a piece and I suspect both Joe and Ryan will both be looking at the result as being two points dropped. Come the end of the season though this could prove to have been a very important point to have gained.

The attendance of 131 was 20% down on last season’s match yet was still the highest gate in the Premier Division. Clubs with big support like Harpenden drew 103 to Rothamsted Park, Stotfold also attracted 103 to the JSJ Stadium and Leighton Town’s away support at London Colney still only produced an attendance of 50. The 2-2 draw leaves the Blues in 5th place and had they managed to not concede an 88th minute equalizer would have been sitting in joint 3rd position with Leverstock Green. But concede we did and even in stoppage time, needed an acrobatic save from Connor Coulson to keep hold of a very precious point. Tring have strengthened their squad in the summer and took a deserved lead into the half time break. On 8 minutes Leo Farruch skipped past a couple of challenges before slotting home into the right hand far corner and beyond Connor Coulson’s outstretched diving hands. Had Delguardo’s volley from a cross out on the left, early in the second half, gone in and not hit the post, we might have found ourselves climbing a mountain and not a hill to get back into the game. The fact that they did was thanks to Blues supporters’ man of the match, Tolu Ikuyinminu who got the equalizer on 60 minutes with an unstoppable shot into the top corner. Five minutes later and Kelvin Osei-Addo added a second and his third in three matches. One of the new rules introduced this season is the option to play all 5 named substitutes. With referees needing to add 30 seconds of stoppage time for every substitution made, there is the real risk of there being 5 minutes of stoppage time being added just for substitutes.

One of the most absorbing contests of the afternoon was the one between Kyle Davison-Gordon & Tring forward, Godlove Oppong. Those of you with long memories may remember Godlove when as a 16-year-old he burst through the youth ranks into the Dev Team, scored on his debut and looked a sure fire cert for a bright future with the Club.

Coached and mentored by Blues current Head of Youth Development, Wayne Upton, who identified Godlove’s prestigious talent at a young age, Godlove moved on and put in a fine display in his return to Creasey Park.

Blues, Head Coach, has so far resisted any temptation he may have had to do so, but his decision to bring on Kelvin from the subs bench on 56 minutes for Isaac Olaleye, was rewarded with a goal which so nearly proved to be the winner.

The 92 is a genuine club - the ‘most exclusive club’ in football if you believe the website, which I do. It has rules, it has members who enforce the rules, it has a committee who create new rules and deep down most football fans want to be part of an exclusive club of football fans who have seen a match* at every one of the 92 Premier and Football League venues. Before the days of the Internet the club operated under very strict rules. A ground could only be counted if you saw a competitive match - no friendlies allowed unless they were international friendlies but only if England (or Wales) were playing. If a club dropped out of the league and returned, sorry but you had to revisit - which proved a nightmare for many when this fate fell on Carlisle United. But despite the rules, to qualify you simply had to provide a list (written on a photocopied sheet) of your qualifying games and you were in. A small membership fee, a pin badge and some optional cufflinks for £15. I first qualified back in 1995, my final ground being Anfield watching Liverpool destroy West Ham. But in 1999 it all went to hell in a handcart as new grounds opened and promotion from the Conference began. All of a sudden I was missing 2, then 3 and 4 grounds. Fortunately the club had gone digital and with so many high profile games being scheduled the rules relaxed. A ICC cup game at Spurs new stadium versus Inter and AFC Wimbledon playing a Liverpool XI both counted in the new world but wouldn’t have in the old days despite both grounds being full. At the start of this seasons I had two still to revisit - I’d been to Newport County when they played at Somerton Park and then the appalling International Stadium but I’d never seen football at Rodney Parade (rugby yes). A very wet night in September last year saw that one ticked off leaving just Morecambe. A work trip to Scotland gave me the opportunity of completing the 92, for the third time, although I would have to miss the guaranteed goal-fest at CorinthianCasuals. stuart Fuller is the creator of the award winning website ‘The Ball Is Round’

false dawns in terms of planned visits cancelled but here I was finally about to re-join not only the 92 club but also become a member of the 116 (including the National League). There would be no fanfare, no presentation on the pitch and no champagne and that was no problem. With no new stadiums on the horizon and no teams due to come up for at least a year who I hadn’t visited, I was safe in the knowledge I could rest on my laurels once again. Some fans will only count a game if they get a programme or at least a team sheet. Others won’t count a ground unless they see a goal, or even in some cases, a goal at each end. There is a very strange group who need to touch the ball for a ground to count. For me, a picture of the game will do me fine. The ‘new’ rules are much less draconian and reflect the nature of football today. We all have our war stories, of games that have been postponed or abandoned (neither of which counted in the old days), of food poisoning and officious stewards but I wouldn’t have changed anything along the way. For your reference, my first “tick” came back in 1974 at The Valley with Charlton Athletic beating Burnley 4-1. But if a random person at a game comes up to me now and asks for “my number”, I can legitimately say once more “92”…. at least that’s what I think they mean?

The name of Benfleet originates from the time of the Saxon settlers in the 5th century, when the area was largely marshland. They named the area Beamfleote, meaning tree stream, being the area where the creeks from the Thames adjoined the wooded area to the north. The battle of Benfleet took place between the Vikings and Saxons in 894. This was towards the end of the Saxon period and the Thames made the area vulnerable to Viking attacks. The Vikings were defeated in the battle by the army of King Alfred under the command of his son Edward the Elder. The football club was established in 1922, initially as Benfleet United and subsequently Benfleet Rangers. During their time playing in the Southend & District League, the club won the Essex Junior Cup in 1967-68. After winning the league in 1971-72, the club joined the Essex Olympian League and dropped the Rangers part of the name. In 1988-89 Benfleet won the league and the Essex Intermediate Cup. At the end of the 2017-18 season, Benfleet successfully applied for promotion to the new Division One South of the Eastern Counties League, a massive jump of three levels. To facilitate this, Benfleet are playing their first team matches at Park Lane, Canvey Island FC. The remainder of the club’s teams remain at Woodside Park in Benfleet where they play their the pieman

On adjourning to the clubhouse building, it was good to enjoy a couple of pints of chilled cider. The canteen area had been busy earlier, catering for the various youth sides and so refreshments were not available. However, the extremely friendly folk at the club went out of their way to provide both myself and hungry groundhopper Phil Bayley with enormous cheeseburgers. These were delicious and were generously given free of charge. We thoroughly recommend ‘Cindy’s burgers’ and the associated hospitality. For the club to host senior football at this site, it will require council approval. The use of Canvey Island FC is ongoing and the process for upgrading this venue is likely to take some time for it to come to fruition. However, the club is clearly ambitious and rightly proud as they look to celebrate their centenary this year. For a friendly, this was quite an entertaining match to watch. Although it was step 6 v step 5, last season’s form when Benfleet reached the playoffs and Sawbridgeworth Town avoided relegation proved to be good marker.

Therefore, this was an opportunity to visit this ground to see a first team match at a venue they will not use during the regular season. A similar situation to that at Virginia Water FC in recent years. I was fortunate to be offered a lift to and from Upminster Station for this jaunt. The alternative is by train to Benfleet (C2C) and the best part of a three mile walk through town. The football club is situated in a scenic area on the edge of town. On a warm Saturday in summer, it was reassuringly English to see a cricket match being played nearby. We were able to park near the clubhouse building and take a few photographs with over an hour to go before the 3pm kick off.

The three-goal margin of victory was about right. A highlight was when local spectator Richard Smith, superbly controlled a stray ball with one touch. Sadly, his boss Kerry Fairless was elsewhere. This was certainly good match practice for both sides as they prepare for the new season. My journey home via Upminster, Barking, Blackhorse Road and Seven Sisters was only tainted by London Overground providing a four car train on a day when drivers on the other line were on strike and there were various other events taking place, not least a concert at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

On The Road Harpenden Town 12 miles

reCommended pub

The nearest train station is Harpenden, a few stops from Luton. The ground is a 10 minute walk from the station.

Approaching Harpenden from Luton, go through town and just past the George pub, turn right into Leyton Road. Then turn left into Amenbury Lane and then left into the pay & display car park after about 300 yards. The entrance to the ground is in the far corner of the car park next to the swimming pool and up the pathway. pay & display parking only.
