FROM THE BOARDROOM Good afternoon and welcome to Creasey Park. We welcome the players, officials and supporters of Yaxley for this important fixture. We will looking to reverse the result from earlier in the season when we saw our keeper Nathan Harness having to be substituted early in the game. Last Saturday’s home game against Bedford was disappointing for all concerned with Dunstable Town. It was tough enough with 11 players but to play an hour of the game with 10 men is never a welcome proposition. We know we must play better and be competitive from the start of the game, and I know there were some harsh lessons learned. Bedford managed the game to their advantage with one or two older heads dictating in every sense of the word. All that said we have seen on many occasions this season how well we are able to play, and results against Corby and Bromsgrove are indicative of the quality within our team. so we look forward to today’s fixture with optimism . Last Saturday we welcomed our friends from Grovebury Cars (KIA and SSANYONG.) The shirts, shorts and pitch side boards look excellent and Grovebury were delighted with what we have been able to achieve so far. The children (and their parents) from Weatherfields and Totternhoe schools also loved their day as they played their friendly tournament and then joined us for food and ultimately to be

team mascots. Many have said that they will come again. That’s great news! Today we are delighted to have Greene King sponsor our game and to offer reduced admission prices. This helps us in many ways as a club and if this initiative has encouraged your visit to Creasey Park this afternoon then we are very pleased to have your support. The Development team followed up their victory over Westfield with a 4-0 victory at Eversely & California on Saturday, and a couple of the team represented the county at U18 level at Kempston on Sunday. Well done to Callum Shortt and L’Kharmi Gale on your selection and an excellent 6-0 result. Finally, and as always, let’s really get behind Gareth and the team this afternoon.

Enjoy the m atch Neil

MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK A very warm welcome to Creasey Park this afternoon, especially to Andrew, his coaching staff, players, supporters and everyone else connected with Yaxley FC. I hope you all have a pleasant afternoon with us and a safe journey home. Our opponents today are coming to us following a run of good form, that have seen them pick up 3 back to back wins that has secured their step 4 status after their first season in the league. A terrific achievement by everyone involved. Today is our second consecutive home game following the heavy defeat we suffered at the hands of a very strong Bedford team. To say I was frustrated with last Saturday’s performance is an understatement. We went into this game fully sighted and prepared for a tough and fast game, however from the outset we showed very little of what we are capable of. It is fair to say however that Bedford executed their game plan well against us, which also resulted in Hassan Sheik getting sent off. Hassan is naturally disappointed with his reaction that now sees him suspended for three of the final four games left. Including today, four crucial games remain where we must see a difference in our recent goals for and against form. I have every belief and confidence, that with the hard work we are putting into training, the lads are able to show the character to step up and meet that change. What we may lack in experience, we more than make

up for in desire, ability, confidence and resilience to see this season through the right way and pull away from the bottom places. This week coming also sees our Development Team play their Beds FA Intermediate Challenge Cup Final against Henlow on Wednesday. I would like to wish Colin, Val and the lads all the best of luck. Both Colin and Val have been a huge help to me since I took over as manager and I really feel that the work they are doing with the development team is keeping the pathway and future strong for the club. It would be great to bring some silverware back to Creasey Park! My final word this week goes to you our loyal supporters, who come week in and week out to cheer and clap the lads on and off the pitch, regardless of the result. I would like to thank you from the very bottom of my heart for that support. We will be doing everything we can this afternoon to bring some smiles back to your faces!

YAXLEY HISTORY The club was formed in 1900 with the forerunner of today’s club, Yaxley Rovers, being members of the first Peterborough League campaign contested during the 1902/03 season. The Club has always played either in or on the fringes of the highest levels of local leagues which, over the years have been sponsored and known by many names such as Eastern Counties, Jewson, and Peterborough League. The Cuckoo’s finished as runnersup three seasons in a row, the last of these being enough to see the club promoted to the Premier Division of the Peterborough League. The club’s first taste of Premier Division football came at the start of the 1975/76 season and once again they finished runners-up. The following season they went one better and won the Premier Division title. The 1983/84 season was a superb one with the first team winning the treble, the Peterborough Premier Division, the Peterborough Senior Cup and the Hunts Senior Cup, and the Reserves winning the Peterborough Division One Championship. The Cuckoos left the Peterborough League at the end of the 1987/88 season and made the step up to the Eastern League at the start of the following season. 1993/94 saw the purchase of the new ground and the facilities to step up to the United Counties League and the 1994/95 season was at that time, probably the most successful in its history. This was the debut season of the ill-fated West

Anglian League (amalgamation of the Hunts & East Northants Leagues) and the first team won promotion to the United Counties League after winning the championship. During the close season floodlights were erected and a stand was put up at the Leading Drove ground. The following season saw the Division One championship come to Leading Drove. The 2002/03 season saw Jim Watson take over the management of the First Team making a magnificent charge from the relegation zone of the United Counties League Premiership to finish seventh with 67 points – the club’s highest ever finishing position. The same season saw plans unveiled for new facilities that are part of a five year objective to take the club into the Dr. Martens (or equivalent) league. The club has maintained FA Charter Club status and was granted planning permission to redevelop the site, improving the facilities (e.g. new clubhouse and additional playing areas) to FA community standard. The project was severely delayed in 2005 resulting in significant commercial loses due to an access dispute halting the club’s entire development plan. The dispute was finally settled and the project restarted in August ’06. Season 2008-09 saw the move to more temporary accommodation. The last 3 seasons have been some of the toughest in the clubs history as against

YAXLEY HISTORY the pundit’s opinions; Gary Clipston pulled survival from the jaws of relegation. The 2012-13 season saw a total rebuild of the 1st team and players under the management of former Cuckoos player and Reserve Team manager Brett Whaley (assisted by Chris Lenton) and the reinstatement of the clubs Reserve Team acting as a bridge between our flourishing U18’s and 1st Team. The 1st team finished mid-table and were joint winners (along with Royston Town) of The Hinchingbrooke Cup. 2014-15 saw the Cuckoos enjoy a very good season with an excellent FA Vase run and a 4th position in the league but one of the worst disciplinary records in the clubs history compounded by an embarrassing county cup final display to round off a poor run-in to the end. The surprise of the season was the “shock” departure of Brett Whaley to Wisbech Town having only days before presented his plan and budget for the 2015-16 to the clubs committee which was approved. 2015-16 A new brush and a new era with new manager Ian Benjamin, an exprofessional with massive experience in semi-pro and non-league and a track record of promotion at Step 4 and 5. The biggest change for the club was the new 3G pitch that the club and the community have already benefited from enormously. The club would like to place on public record its deep and sincere appreciation

to all those silent partners who have made our dream for growth and sustainability a reality. Ian Benjamin resigned at the beginning of April and the position was filled by the return from Wisbech Town of Brett Whaley. 2016-17 Brett Whaley showed his intent to take the Cuckoos to a higher level of football by strengthening the squad with some impressive experience whilst retaining the vast majority of last season’s players. Last season was a disappointing one for the whole club but that was quickly forgotten. Brett brought back players and a great coaching team. In addition to an impressive 3rd place in the league we also won the UCL KO Cup beating Wisbech Town in a fiercely contested battle. 2017-18 saw our new Chairman Malcolm Clements officially set the clubs target for promotion and building on the success of last season, started what we all hoped was the next forward step for the Cuckoos. Our local attendances began to swell and also got behind our reformed Reserves. Assistant manager Andy Furnell took over the 1st Team management as Brett Whaley once again left the club. Ferns led the club again to the league cup final (runners up) but more importantly to the league title and promotion to the Evo-Stik Southern League.

REPORTING IN

DUNSTABLE TOWN 0-5 BEDFORD TOWN Bedford Town moved through the gears seemingly quite effortlessly at Creasey Park on Saturday to complete the double over Dunstable Town, becoming only the 5th team this season to achieve this. Given the topsyturvey season Dunstable have experienced this little stat does hint at the way things can go according to plan on the field..and equally, the way things can go wrong on the field. Impressive wins over Bromsgrove, Corby and Thame, hard fought draws at Peterborough, Cambridge, and last Saturday at Barton, show the ability the Team has when everything clicks. Too often though, game plans are not followed and tactics forgotten when the opposition seek our collective achilles heel, press hard, press high and force individual errors. It’s a situation which has Manager, Gareth Jackson, perplexed and frustrated. His pre-match preparations are extensive, exhaustive & professional. Tactics and drills are rehearsed twice a week on the training pitch & the boys go out at five to three with the Gaffer’s directions and instructions made as straightforward as possible. And then the problems start. Or can start. If you wanted a lesson on how to “do a job” then yesterday was pretty much such an example. Bedford were out of the traps quickly, pressed high and in numbers and barely gave the backline any respite. Outfought in midfield, Dunstable were indebted to Connor Coulson for keeping out the Bedford attack twice before Dan Walker, seized on a through ball, rounded Connor and slipped the ball into the empty net despite skipper Gedeon Okito’s frantic efforts to intercept it.

11 minutes played and the noisy Bedford contingent smelled blood. Again Connor was alert to get down to keep out Leon Lobjoit, but three minutes later Dan Walker got on the end of a cross and Dunstable found themselves two down. Hassan Sheikh received a straight red for headbutting an opponent and for the next hour Dunstable played with 10 men. With Hassan’s dismissal a tall order became a mountain. Two further goals and a hat trick for Dan Walker on 40 minutes had Bedford go in at half time four goals up and Dunstable looking bereft of an answer to the questions posed by the Bedford men in grey. The second half proved to be more of an even contested affair with Dunstable tighter at the back and more competitive in midfield. At half time Chris Wreh, still feeling the effects of his groin strain, was replaced by James Lauder. For half an hour Dunstable looked as though there was some pride and fire in their bellies. Alex Taylor urged the troops on to salvage some pride, Charlie Oddy was again impressive in unfamiliar surroundings. Erin Amu ran his socks off and was replaced late on by Davide Pobbe. A free kick just outside the box was Dunstable’s best chance of the second half but Saul Williams’ shot went over the bar. A fifth Bedford goal with 12 minutes to play scored by James Hall just about summed up a miserable and depressing afternoon for our lads.

13 APRIL 1936 - BRISTOL ROVERS FEEL THE PAYNE On 13 April 1936, Luton Town crushed Bristol Rovers 12-0 in a Division Three (South) match. 10 of the goals were scored by one player, Joe Payne, whose tally remains the record number of goals scored by one individual in a League match. Payne joined the Hatters the previous season at the age of 20. By the time of the match against Rovers, he was primarily a reserve team player, but was forced into starting at center forward on 13 April due to injuries among his teammates.

His 10 goals, however, secured his place in the first team and he led Luton Town to promotion the next season, scoring 55 goals. In addition to Payne’s record haul, the match remains Luton Town’s greatest victory and Bristol Rovers’ worst loss.

Perhaps programmes will become increasingly digital. Clubs across the country and even the world are already experimenting with online editions, the use of QR codes on tickets to bring the latest copy direct to your phone, it will be fascinating to see how they evolve. By many accounts, sales are falling and combined with the increasing in costs, you can understand why clubs are exploring other options or dropping them altogether. When Football League clubs have voted on a decision to stop them being mandatory, it can be expected to filter down.

Perhaps I’m one of the dying breed who still enjoys seeing what clubs can produce. We must not forget how demanding it is for volunteers in Non-League to put all this together, let alone when the weather hits and scuppers all that hard work.
