insecticides

Insecticides for Turf I f you feel outnumbered in your war against insect pests in turf, you’re not alone. Thankfully, the odds are ever in your favor, especially given the number of chemical tools you have for controlling them. There are lots of insecticides registered for use on turf and landscape ornamentals. On the next pages, you’ll find a current and comprehensive guide that will serve as a quick reference, allowing you to compare chemical products available to help you combat insect pests in turfgrass. If you’re looking for products that control insect pests in ornamentals, flip over to our chart on ornamental insecticides on page 36. The Chemical Guide is presented in table format because this is the most practical way to let you cross-reference pests and the chemicals available for their control. At the same time, it allows us to provide other useful information, such as chemical class, form of application and plant tolerances, in a simple and clear format. The first table here lists insects across the top and the active ingredients of products down the left side. You may know a chemical by its brand name. However, the same active ingredient may be present in numerous brands. Therefore, we list chemicals by the trade or common name of the active ingredient(s). This eliminates redundancy and reduces confusion with brand names. Once you locate the insect you’d like to target,

slide down to see all of the active ingredients designed to control it. You’ll also see some additional information in the table about each active ingredient, such as to which chemical class it belongs, (helpful if you are trying to rotate chemicals in an effort to limit resistance); its mode of action, which tells you if the insects have to ingest the product or simply be exposed to it; and its form of application: bait, dust, granular or spray. Many applicators specialize in one form of application (such as liquid or granular), so it’s important to know whether a chemical will suit your operation. Each of these elements can help you identify which active ingredient and, therefore, product, best suits your needs. Use the third page of the chart to locate brand names and suppliers for each of the active ingredients listed in the table. This makes for easy cross-referencing. Remember, these specification charts are only for reference. They are not a recommendation for use, nor are they a substitution for application instructions. As always, consult the product label and follow all label instructions. Labels can sometimes be confusing. If you are unsure about using a certain product in your location, contact the nearest cooperative extension office, your county agricultural agent or the manufacturer and ask for more technical information.

fungicides

Fungicides for Turf S taying one step ahead of turf disease can challenging even the best, most experienced turf managers. To help you, we offer this section of our Chemical Guide. It puts potential solutions within your reach by providing a reference for controlling disease in one concise format. With the help of chemical manufacturers and suppliers, we have assembled two tables that profile fungicides, identifying the important properties of each to make it easier for you to compare chemistries. Table 1 lists chemicals by the active ingredient (common name) of the fungicide and specifies the mode of action of the product as either contact or systemic. Contact fungicides generally are applied to the leaf and stem surfaces of turfgrasses and do not move appreciably within the plants. Systemic fungicides are absorbed and translocated within the plant. This chart also defines fungicide group, which is an important factor for avoiding resistance. Using the same fungicide each time to treat a disease will result in reduced efficacy, so you’ll want to rotate the chemicals you use repeatedly. Next, the table identifies the formulations available for each active ingredient (liquid or granular, for example). They also tell you if the product is labeled for ornamental use, as well. Lastly, the table specifies which diseases you can control with each active ingredient and designates with a “P” or “C” whether you can use

the fungicide for preventive or curative treatments, or both. The second table helps you find the brand names and suppliers for each active ingredient listed in the main table. This makes for easy cross-referencing. These tables will not be useful if you cannot identify the pathogen that you wish to control. The importance of proper pathogen identification cannot be overstated. Many pathogens exhibit similar symptoms. However, the controls for each may be different. If you are having difficulty, consult an extension specialist or other expert. Keep in mind the “diseases controlled” section is a compilation based on the labels of all products that are available with that active ingredient. Typically, products with the same active ingredient have similar labeling, but this is not always true. Be sure to carefully read labels to ensure the product you wish to use has labeling for the target pests. The same applies to other registration details, such as use sites, etc. Remember, these specification tables are only for reference. They are not a recommendation for use, nor are they a substitution for application instructions. Some of the fungicides listed are not labeled for use on home lawns but are labeled for use on the commercial properties you manage. As always, consult the product label and follow all label instructions. 2015 | Total Landscape Care | Chemical Guide 11

herbicides

Turfgrass Herbicides W hen it comes to controlling weeds in turf, you’ve got options. Lots of them. There are active ingredients and formulations to combat nearly every known species of weed. Some seek out weeds and kill them selectively while others kill indiscriminately. With so many options available, it is challenging to quickly find what you need to solve weed problems, but the following charts are designed to offer you a comprehensive, quick resource to herbicides. Our charts are in table format because this is the most practical way to take you from the problem (the pest you’re trying to control) to the solution (the chemical that will control the pest). This format also allows us to provide other useful information. You’ll find a list of active ingredients and which weeds (grassy and broadleaf) they control. They include a description of other chemical characteristics, as well, such as whether the formulation is liquid or granular, selective or not, and whether the product is also labeled for ornamental use. Note that the purpose of this chart is to list chemicals registered for use on turfgrass. Some of these are also labeled for ornamentals. However, we’ll profile products designed strictly for ornamentals in a chart of their own.

User’s manual When you turn this page, you’ll find a two-

page chart that describes every chemical (by common name of active ingredient) listed within the entire herbicide guide. These pages describe each chemical’s characteristics and define the following: • Pre-emergent or post-emergent • Non-selective or selective • Labeled for ornamental use • Liquid or granular • Plant tolerances (which major turfgrass species are tolerant of the chemical) The two pages after that table list which of these chemicals (again, by active ingredient) you could use to control grassy weeds and sedges. Notice these are divided into pre-emergence controls and post-emergence controls. Following that is our guide to herbicides that control broadleaf weeds. This, too, is divided into pre-emergence and postemergence herbicides. Note that active ingredients are listed alphabetically, starting with pre-emergents. Finally, the “Sources of Herbicides” table will provide you with a list of chemical brand names and who supplies them. On the last page, you’ll find contact information for those companies. As always, use these tables for preliminary planning only. Always read and follow label instructions for each chemical you use. The Chemical Guide is not a substitute for label information. 2015 | Total Landscape Care | Chemical Guide 17

However, read the label for restrictions that may prevent use in certain situations. If species are not checked for a herbicide, product labels do not list tolerant species. A few labels specify only “ornamental turf.” Some companies have provided a list of species that tolerate these herbicides for this update. Restricted-use pesticide.

Glufosinate-ammonium is listed as a burndown. However, it also has limited systemic activity. So it is quicker-acting than some systemics, with better control of woody and perennial weeds than contacts.

3

Use only where no future landscaping is planned, such as under concrete.

4

Restricted-use pesticide.

5

Available as an aerosol only.
