Selling with statistics By Lucas Deal, Editor lucasdeal@randallreilly.com

B

ack in July I received a news report from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) regarding its 2016 Brake Check

Day. Held once a year, the unannounced inspection day is part of CVSA’s comprehensive inspection schedule, and helps to achieve the Alliance’s mission to “improve commercial motor vehicle safety and uniformity throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico by providing guidance and education to enforcement, industry and policy makers.” This year’s event was held on May 4. The results were staggering. CVSA says it conducted 6,128 inspections of brake systems on commercial vehicles in 31 states and Canadian provinces. As a result of those inspections, CVSA says 12.4 percent of vehicles were placed out of service with brake violations, and 13.9 percent of vehicles were placed out of service for violations other than brake violations. While I’m sure there was some carryover between those two groups — if you’re driving around with inferior brakes it’s safe to say that’s not the only system you’ve neglected — each percentage on its own is disturbingly high. CVSA says its inspectors checked only brakes, anti-lock braking systems and related components during the inspection spree, which means CVSA put anywhere from 790 to 1,611 vehicles out of service while only checking a fraction of each vehicle.

2

That’s not an encouraging thought. With the exception of a few key logistical requirements CVSA’s Brake Check Day is an entirely random inspection. Organizers don’t know whose trucks they’re going to stop and who they’re going to let pass by, so the idea that they just went out one day and forced a thousand or more trucks off the road for serious violations is disconcerting.

What if you sweetened your sales pitch with hard data? If that many trucks in a small sample size are unsafe, how many others are out there? I don’t mean to be alarming. I know a lot of fleet maintenance professionals who work tirelessly to keep their vehicles safe, and an out-of-service brake violation doesn’t equate to a truck that can’t stop, but numbers like that still deserve to be taken seriously. Even with all of the safety-centric efforts made by CVSA, NHTSA, FMCSA, TMC, OEMs and every other acronymbased moniker group over the years, huge numbers of out-of-service vehicles are still out there. Everywhere. That’s a problem. And it’s one I think the aftermarket can help solve. Last October I wrote an article for

T R U C K PA R T S & S E R V I C E | A u g u s t 2 0 1 6

Truck Parts & Service on how aftermarket businesses can use FMCSA Compliance Safety Accountability (CSA) data to reveal sales opportunities within their customer base. If you missed it, the thesis in that piece was the idea the CSA program is producing an incredible amount of data regarding the vehicle maintenance needs of North America’s trucking fleet, and that aftermarket operations could use that data to help better understand the needs of their customer base. CVSA inspection results offer the same advantages. You can sell plenty of brake parts through your aggressive stocking strategies, on-time delivery and customer service. And I’d never suggest giving those up. But what if you sweetened your sales pitch with hard data? “Your fleet has averaged ten out-ofservice violations totaling 20 days of downtime per month for two years.” Or, “Your area of operation has the highest inspection rate per capita in the state, and eighth highest in the United States.” Wouldn’t that get a customer’s attention? The industry might not yet be able to predict component failure dates and we’ll never be able to predict inspections, but that doesn’t mean you can’t help keep your customers prepared. By using the data available — both specific to your customers and the industry at large — you can strengthen your partnerships and, ideally, your sales.

Pause or Peak? By Robert F. Dieli RDLB, Inc.

O

nce a month, usually on the first Friday, all eyes turn to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) as it releases its monthly Employment Situation Report. Getting all the attention, often for the wrong reason, are the two headline figures. The first, from the Household Survey of employment, is the Unemployment Rate. The second, from the Establishment Survey of employment, is the change in total non-farm payroll employment. Contained within the latter is a statistic of considerable interest to readers of publications like this one: the level of truck transportation employment. Not only is the level and trend of truck transportation employment one of the better indicators of current and prospective conditions in our industry, it also can provide some insight into the current and prospective condition of the economy. As long as we need trucks to move freight, we will need people to drive those trucks, service those trucks and schedule those trucks. The truck transportation employment figures published by the BLS are based on a sample of firms in our industry that includes general freight (short and long haul as well as TL and LTL carriers), specialized freight (short and long haul) and moving companies.

According to the BLS, there are about 1,455,000 persons employed in the truck transportation category. Of those, about 61 percent were involved in general freight, about 21 percent in specialized freight, about 6 percent in moving and 12 percent were categorized as supervisory personnel.

Total truck transportation employment was up by 4,700 persons in July Because the figures just published by the BLS for July are their first estimates of the level of employment, one should always be careful about how much to read into the “latest news. Each batch of numbers goes through two revisions. According to the latest release, total truck transportation employment was up by 4,700 persons in July. This partially reversed the cumulative loss of 15,000 jobs that had occurred

between February and May. This is one of those cases where one wishes it did not take three months for the numbers to settle down. Why? Because we would like to be able to better figure out whether the recent softness in employment has been resolved or whether the July reading is just a momentary pause in the decline we have seen over most of 2016. From what we have seen from the BLS so far in 2016, it appears that most of the recent softness has been concentrated in the specialized freight category. Employment in general freight, both TL and LTL, has remained firm. The July level of employment is about 10,000 persons below the high for this expansion that was set in January of 2016. Some of that decline can be traced to lower freight volumes. And some of that decline can be traced to adjustments in trucking capacity. And some can be traced to the continued efforts of shippers to rebalance their supply chains. We will be looking closely at the reports on employment and freight over the next several months to see how those issues are being resolved. We have found that looking at the two measures of industry activity together gives a better view of what is going on and what to expect.

Production Underway For Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week 2017 Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week (HDAW) organizers CVSN, HDDA and HDMA announce Don Purcell, partner and co-owner of Stone Truck Parts, and Carl

Mesker, vice president of the Aftermarket, Americas at SAF-Holland, will be co-chairs for the next year’s 12th annual event, set for Jan. 23-26, 2017, at the

Mirage in Las Vegas. The HDAW co-chairs are responsible for the strategic leadership of the event and involvement with the volunteer/staff program planning teams, which consist of more than 40 individuals from aftermarket supplier and distributor companies and organizations, organizer says. HDAW also announced “Developing Diverse Solutions” as the theme for the 2017 event. “Distributors, suppliers and fleets are all able to learn and build off this exciting program. Every participant has something valuable they can take away to empower creativity and positive energy throughout the industry,” says Mesker. “Finding new solutions to problems is what our industry needs, that is exactly what this year is all about.” “This event is going to be outstanding, filled with fresh ideas and ways of thinking,” adds Purcell.

Bosch To Create Standalone Commercial Vehicle Segment Citing a previous inability to “tap the full potential of the market because of its organizational structure,” Bosch announces it has developed a stand-alone, effective business unit exclusive to the commercial vehicle and off-road market. “We are not a division and are not comparable to any other known structure from the Mobility Solutions business sector,” says Johannes-Jörg Rüger, head of the organization. The new unit is rather a “sales organization with integrated system development” that closely cooperates with all the divisions. Bosch says associates are not only focusing on major customers, but also paying attention to the entire spectrum of customers in the area, including small providers.

SAFETY RECALLS Daimler Trucks North America is recalling certain model year 2017 Freightliner Cascadia, 122SD, Western Star 4900SA and 4900FA, and FCCC XCM and XCP trucks manufactured from March 14, 2016, through May 18, 2016, equipped with a Cummins ISX12 or ISX15 engine using certain engine control modules (ECM). These ECM’s may experience an internal electrical short that can cause a fuse to blow, resulting in an unexpected engine stall without the ability to restart the engine. An engine stall without the ability to restart the engine can increase the risk of a crash. Navistar is recalling certain model year 2017 International ProStar, LoneStar, PayStar, HX and 9900 trucks equipped with a Cummins ISX15L engine using certain engine control modules (ECM). These ECM’s may experience an internal electrical short that can cause a fuse to blow, resulting in an unexpected engine stall without the ability to restart the engine. An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash. Paccar is recalling certain model year 2016 Kenworth W900 trucks manufactured May 19,

The following are safety recalls issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

2015, to Dec. 21, 2015. The affected vehicles may have a temporary loss of headlights when being switched from low beam to high beam mode. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.” A loss of headlights while switching to high beams will reduce the driver’s visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. Quality Trailers is recalling certain model year 2015 Flatbed Equipment and Wedge Car Hauler trailers manufactured April 1, 2015, to April 30, 2016. The lock nuts that secure the axle hanger to the springs may not have been properly crimped allowing the nut to loosen and detach during operation. If the nuts were to fall off, the bolts could loosen, and the axle may disconnect from the spring hangers, shifting or detaching from the trailer and increasing the risk of a crash. Spartan Motors is recalling certain model year 2007-2015 Spartan K3 and MM motorhome chassis manufactured Sept. 21, 2006, to March

23, 2015. In the affected vehicles, the flexible exhaust tube may tear allowing hot exhaust to blow against other components or materials. If hot exhaust gas contacts other components or materials, it can increase the risk of a fire. Stoughton Trailers is recalling certain 2014 AHV, AVW, AVXW and ZGPVW trailers. These trailers are equipped with certain SAF-Holland-brand CBX Trailer Suspension Air Ride Axle Systems. The affected trailer suspensions have pivot bolts that may fail. Failure of the pivot bolts may cause the suspension and attached axle to separate from the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash. Volvo Trucks North America is recalling certain model year 2017 VNL trucks manufactured March 15, 2016, to April 20, 2016, equipped with a Cummins ISX12 or ISX15 engine using certain engine control modules (ECM). These ECM’s may experience an internal electrical short that can cause a fuse to blow, resulting in an unexpected engine stall without the ability to restart the engine. An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash.

Action Truck Parts

T

he first decade of Action Truck Parts was one of change. Nick Seidel hopes the second is one of opportunity. Now in its 11th year of operation, Action Truck Parts has come a long way since Nick’s father Ben Seidel and Acme Truck Brake and Supply’s Bill Dudek partnered to open the business in 2005. Nick, now vice president and sales manager, has been with the company from the beginning. In looking back at those early days, he says the business has always been one focused on opportunity. In fact, he says that’s the reason it exists in the first place. “My dad owns a fuel injection company and in the early 2000s he was building a new facility for it [in Bolingbrook, Ill.] and realized he was going to have a large amount of warehouse space available,” Nick recalls. Unsure of how to best use the space, Ben began investigating options and was eventually directed to Dudek. Dudek’s Acme Truck Brake and Supply was thriving across Chicagoland in Elk Grove Village, Ill., and it didn’t take long for the two successful entrepreneurs to see potential in Seidel’s available space. Within two years of meeting, the Bolingbrook store opened. Two years later it would undergo its first change. “[Dudek’s] main location became incredibly busy,” and required his time and attention, Nick says. Eventually the partners determined it would be best to manage each location separately, so Ben Seidel bought out Dudek to become sole owner of Acme Truck Parts. It didn’t stay that way for long. The Seidels were soon approached by Canada’s Traction Truck Parts, and in November

An inviting, easily accessible showroom greets customers at the Action Truck Parts location in Bolingbrook, Ill.

2007 the Bolingbrook store became one of Traction’s first United States facilities. It would remain with Traction for nearly six years, and when it changed again, it was Nick who took the reins. “Over the years I worked my way up and when we started talking about another direction that’s when I became fully involved,” he says. His first move was to grow relationships within the industry to give the business its best chance at success. When the facility sliced “tr” from Traction to become Action Truck Parts in 2013, it did so as Chicagoland’s newest VIPAR Heavy Duty distributor. It has since taken off, acquiring a new facility in Rockdale, Ill., last month, and Seidel is optimistic the business could grow even larger in the coming years. He attributes his optimism to a staff eager to help its customers, and burgeoning supplier relationships that continue to help Action Truck Parts gain a foothold in the vast Chicagoland marketplace. Once customers are exposed to Action Truck Parts, Seidel says he wants them to feel compelled to come back. “We know when a customer comes in here he’s probably mad. He has to spend his money to fix something. We know he doesn’t want to be in that situation, but we want to make sure we can calm him down and make sure to get the right [part] the first time,” he says. “We want every customer to be happy when they walk out the door.” Action Truck Parts officially opened its second location in Rockdale, Ill., on July 1, and the company hopes to expand further in Chicagoland in future years.

echnology in the North American trucking industry is typically adopted in three phases.

First are the early adopters, customers who embrace new technology because of potential benefits they see for their businesses. Typically these are large fleets; businesses with enough capital to commit to unproven technology because of potential long-term gains. And businesses that, more often than not, can afford to withstand a mistake if a new technology adoption doesn’t payback as anticipated. After early adopters confirm the validity of a technology the second phase begins. This is commonly known as the period of mass introduction. Once the big fleets determine it’s safe to wade out into the water, it doesn’t take long for everyone else to start joining them. One product in particular that is teetering on that tipping point is air disc brakes. With industry-wide adoption rates

currently between 10 to 15 percent and growing, air disc brakes are steadily moving from an early adoption phase to a period of mass introduction. And for a technology as tested and proven as air disc brakes, manufacturers say once the industry reaches phase two, phase three — acceptance — isn’t far away. “I think the model for us to use is what we see in Europe today. The majority of that market has moved to air disc brakes and there is potential for North America to do the same,” says Paul Chappell, product manager, automatic brake adjusters and air disc brakes, North America at Haldex. “For us, it’s not so much a case of

if we’ll see them accepted, it’s more a case of will they be accepted quickly.” As for why, manufacturers say that answer is obvious. Disc brakes stop a truck faster and with more control than drum brakes. “Air disc brakes have incredible stopping power, and have been proven to be able to stop a truck faster [than drums] when both loaded and unloaded,” says Jay Urban, product manager, air disc brakes at Meritor. There’s really “no comparison” for heavy braking application vehicles, adds Jon Morrison, president, Americas at WABCO. “Air disc brakes are regularly able to provide significant reductions in stopping distance over drum brake configurations.” The reduction comes from the system design. Unlike drum brakes, which initiate a braking event by rotating an s-cam to move a brake shoe lined with friction

material outward, disc brakes work almost in the inverse, clamping frictionlined brake pads around on a rotor to slow a wheel end. Status quo in the automotive industry for decades, disc brake systems can use hydraulic or air pressure to force a brake pad inward and initiate a stop. The automotive industry prefers the former, while the commercial vehicle market is partial to the latter. The system’s benefits are extensive. One major advantage is the simple openness of a disc brake system. Disc brakes don’t operate within a closed environment like drum brakes, allowing for more natural air flow during a braking event to dissipate heat. This eliminates brake fade, the phenomena that occurs when the extreme heat created during a drum brake stopping event causes the surfaces of the drum and brake shoe to expand, and weakens the contact between both surfaces. The clamping motion of the disc brake is beneficial here as well. Once engaged, a disc brake works similar to pliers or any other clamping tool. As more force is applied behind each pad the clamping power of the entire system increases. It is that ability to maintain a tight grip on a rotor that allows the system to reduce stopping distances, says Morrison. Bill Hicks, director of Product

SAF-Holland introduced its new P89 and P89 Plus air disc brakes in North America in June.

Planning – Americas at SAF-Holland, says most air disc brake systems have the ability to not only “meet but exceed” reduced stopping distance (RSD) requirements set by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2012. And unlike drum brakes, which moved to larger shoes and/or more aggressive friction material to meet the NHTSA standard, Hicks says air disc brakes have been exceeding those stopping distance requirements for many years. “We’re at a point now where both disc and drum brakes meet the mandate very comfortably, but it was never really a problem for disc brakes,” adds Dennis Griffin, product manager, commercial vehicle friction at Abex, a Federal-Mogul Motorparts brand. Disc brakes also operate much quieter — partially because they didn’t require such wholesale changes to remain viable under RSD regulations, says Keith McComsey, director of marketing and customer solutions, wheel end at Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake. “For manufacturers to meet the RSD

To meet the RSD requirements for drum brakes [manufacturers] had to be much more aggressive [with their friction material] and that aggressiveness has created brake noise. Air disc brakes don’t have that. – Keith McComsey, director of marketing and customer solutions, wheel end at Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake

requirements for drum brakes they had to be much more aggressive [with their friction material] and that aggressiveness has created brake noise,” he says. “Air disc brakes don’t have that.” And if that’s not enough, disc brakes also offer benefits in the service bay, with both longer life cycles for replacement parts (brake pads and rotors) and easier service procedures. “Some people believe when they go to air disc brakes that they won’t have [to do] maintenance anymore. That’s not true,” says Chappell. “The maintenance is less common but it’s still required.” McComsey notes that with longer air disc brake pad life, a fleet turning over new trucks every 3 to 4 years “might not even need to touch replacement pads,” and that wearable components on an air disc brake tend to last “anywhere from 1.5 to 2 times the life” of comparable drum brake parts. Fortunately it’s a pretty easy repair, Chappell says. “Basically you just remove the wheel, and in our case we have a boltless pad retention method. So you take the old pads out and put in new ones and away you go,” he says. “It takes less than half the time” as a drum brake shoe replacement, Urban adds. Hicks agrees, and says even technicians previously unfamiliar with disc brakes can usually master the routine in just a few tries.

“Once they change one or two they immediately realize how quickly and easily it can be done” he says. The system’s only downside, expectedly, is price. Because of their superior performance air disc brakes command a premium price, and until fairly recently, most fleets have been unwilling to invest in the technology. But the tide is starting to turn. Fleets engaged in high duty cycles for braking such as urban delivery fleets, waste disposal services and public transit companies were the first to accept the technology and are now making it standard. Regional and long haul fleets, spurred negative impacts the RSD mandate had on drum brakes — more brake noise, additional weight, etc. — also are looking at disc brakes as a viable alternative. The long-term benefits of air disc brake systems are finally beginning to outweigh upfront cost differences, Hicks says. “You think about these fleets who keep trailers 7 to 10 years. With disc brakes, you can give them a superior braking system that they may need to service just once during that trailer’s life,” he says. “Once you start looking at ROI, [air disc brakes] can be a really good long-term decision especially as the

Bremskerl’s aftermarket brake pad replacmeent kits come complete with the components necessary to make a quick repair.

18

new P89 system has lowered the upfront acquisition price.” And every time a fleet commits to the system, it only helps to make it more affordable for the next adopter, Morrison says. “I think there is a legitimate expectation for fleets that they will see costs improve with volume and improved design,” he says. “We have a path that can get payback to less than two years.” The industry-wide focus on safety is helping drive adoption as well. “I think a lot of the value becomes safety as well as uptime,” says Michael Konrad, sales and marketing manager at Bremskerl North America, which produces friction material for disc and drum brake systems. “Increasingly we are finding that fleets are looking more at safety and how they can extend pad and rotor life; considering the entire life cycle cost when purchasing replacement products such as air disc brake pads.” “Drivers seem to prefer them over drums,” Chappell adds. “They feel more comfortable with them, especially in high braking situations.” Which means adoption rates are sure to rise. And probably fast, manufacturers say. “We have 100 percent certainty that it will rise,” says Urban. “How far can it go? I think within 10 to 15 years we could see half the trucks on the road using air disc brakes.” Konrad agrees, and says it’s not impossible that adoption rates could grow 10 percent year-over-year for the foreseeable future. The technology is good enough to justify the boom. The aftermarket will need to adjust accordingly. Manufacturers are doing their part to aid in the transition through online and onsite training. In addition to general

system functionality and part identification training, manufacturers also note their early training has focused heavily on the importance of identical component replacement. McComsey says replacing an OE part number with an inferior aftermarket product can “diminish those qualities that customers expect from an air disc brake system.” Griffin agrees, adding “you don’t want to ever willfully take something designed to stop at one distance and then make it stop at another [longer] distance.” Other aftermarket changes will be more minor — training technicians, stocking rotors and other new disc brakespecific components — but still required. Ultimately it will be the transition away from remanufacturing, rebuilding and relining older drum brake shoes that could make the largest impact on the independent aftermarket. As disc brake numbers rise, the need for those products could fall dramatically. Brake manufacturers are in consensus that drum brakes will never disappear, but it’s clear now that their days as the dominant braking system in North American heavy-duty trucks are numbered. “When it comes down to it this is the right thing to do,” Hicks says. “[Disc brakes] are the better braking system. “It’s better for my family, it’s better for your family. It’s better for everyone that these systems are out on the road.”

Creatures of Comfort The aftermarket can provide drivers with home-like amenities

or most regional and long haul truck drivers, the inside of their truck almost becomes a second home. They spend hours upon hours driving the highways of North America, then when they do stop, their cab doubles as their home on the road. Spending days, weeks or months at a time inside the truck, they often begin to look for ways to give it a more home-like feel. That need for creature comfort items provides a major sales opportunity for aftermarket distributors. “I am on the road at least four or five days at a time,” says James Cleveland, a long haul owner-operator from Lawrenceburg, Tenn. “I spend a lot more time in my truck than I do at my house.” To give his truck a more comfortable feel, Cleveland looks for amenities that make his time on the road more enjoyable. “I can watch television, cook my supper and access the internet,” he says. “Pretty much the same things that I could do if I was at home.” Pete Petropoul opened what is now truckersmall.net 20 years ago. During that time, he says that he has seen many changes to what he can and needs to offer as well as what drivers are looking for. “When we started we had one product,”

Service Bay he says. “Now, we can offer 80,000. It has changed a lot over the years in what our customers need.” Owner-operators have the freedom to outfit their trucks the way they want, whereas company drivers often do not have that ability. In most cases, company

equipment consists only of items deemed necessary, not creature comforts. However, amenities once looked at as luxuries are becoming more and more prevalent — and easier to sell — as drivers are outfitted to make their time on the road as comfortable as possible. For example, while most people take for granted that they have access to electricity and running water at their job site, drivers are forced to rely on aftermarket distributors to purchase those products to fulfill their needs. Some drivers acquire part of what they need by purchasing a 12-volt or batteryconnected inverter to provide electrical power. Power inverters convert standard battery power (DC) to household power (AC). This affords drivers the luxury of adding many of the household items that they would find at home.

NICE TRY

“I have a television and satellite, microwave and a small refrigerator,” says Glen Baker, an owner-operator from Decatur, Ala. “When I stop in the evenings, I can watch movies or television and I am pretty comfortable. It’s good and cool and it’s just kind of ‘homey.’” The use of inverters allows drivers to maintain common kitchen tools such as refrigerators and microwaves. Bryan Martin, co-owner of 4 State Trucks in Joplin, Mo., says quality highpowered inverters completely change the way a driver can live while on the road, and at an inexpensive price. “If they get a good high end inverter they can run almost any household item that they need to,” he says. “They aren’t dependent on stopping at a hotel or using a truck stop for power needs. Service Bay items from truckersmall.net are refrigerators, mattresses and bed sheets. He says the website gives drivers the flexibility to shop for what they need as well as for items that might also go along with that product. “We started out years ago selling mud flaps that allowed drivers to sell advertising on them. That’s all we offered,” Petropoul says. “As things evolved, we developed a larger product line and we sell items through our site and do not produce a catalog. We depend on sites like Google and Facebook for marketing purposes.” Many of the items marketed there are related to improving driver comfort. “Drivers want a good mattress and that has become a popular item for us,” Petropoul says. Baker agrees.

I have a television and satellite, microwave and a small refrigerator. When I stop in the evenings, I can watch movies or television and I am pretty comfortable. It’s good and cool and it’s just kind of ‘homey.’ – Glen Baker, owner-operator

“I have a lot of the bells and whistles — the stuff that makes my truck comfortable — but the main thing is having a good mattress and a good seat. That’s where all my time is spent. If I’m not in the driver’s seat, then I am in the bed.” Both products are readily available for distribution in the aftermarket. Seat makers such as Bose have developed technologies that help drivers by absorbing some of the common road vibrations.

Truck drivers are exposed to excessive levels of whole body vibration from the bouncing, jarring and shaking experienced while driving. This can have severe consequences that affect driver performance such as back pain, spinal degradation, soreness and fatigue. The Bose Ride system is an active suspension system for truck drivers. It comes with a seat top but the company says the technology is actually below the driver, sensing, analyzing, and

Service Bay counteracting unwanted vibrations from the road, instead of simply acting as a shock absorber, as conventional air ride truck seats do. In the aftermarket, it’s a product that can sell itself. “The need for driver comfort and accommodation has grown over the years,” says Ralph Tricomi, Bose’s aftermarket marketing manager. “We fit the driver with very good protection and isolate the road vibrations so that the driver feels very little of it. This technology prevents whole body vibrations.” Martin says seats are the top selling driver comfort item at 4 State Trucks. “Most of the time drivers are looking for leather and memory foam. Some want the massage options and other features. But, you’ve got to figure that some of them are in these seats for 16-18 hours a day whether it’s driving, sitting at a stop or resting in them when they are off the road.” He says premium seats can be pricey. But, that price can be worth it for someone who spends a great deal of time in the seat. Baker says he has noticed a dramatic change in how he feels after a day on the road now, as opposed to when he first began driving almost 30 years ago. “When I started, the truck would bounce and jar you all over the place,” he says. “Then at night, the mattress was awful and it was always hot in the cab, so I never got a good night’s rest. “Now, I sleep as good or better than I do when I’m at home just because the mattress and seat are so much better than what we had years ago.” Martin says smaller items are also big sellers — items like computer laptop stands and better quality CB radios and GPS units. “It’s not always the high dollar creature comfort item that someone needs,”

24

Bob and Linda Caffee, of Silex, Mo., have been team drivers since 2005. Bob was a diesel mechanic for 20 years while Linda worked in their local courthouse. Since hitting the road as expediters, the couple has given their 2015 Freightliner a home-like feel.

he says. “But people are always looking to be as comfortable as they can be on the road and there are hundreds of things they can get to help them do that.” Marketing of these products also has changed greatly through the years. Many companies now use websites and social media to reach their customer base, while some still use product catalogs. “We have seen our growth through the internet and staying on top of the trends involving search engines,” says

T R U C K PA R T S & S E R V I C E | A u g u s t 2 0 1 6

Petropoul. “We have had to change with the times, but I think we have been able to do that.” Martin says 4 State Trucks uses some billboard advertising as well as direct mailings and magazine ads, but has found its website to be its most successful tool. “We have been in business for 36 years and the products have all changed so much,” he says. “Every year the bar is raised a little higher on everything. So we have changed and adapted.”

Milwaukee Tool has expanded its hand tool offering with the introduction of several new locking tools designed to increase productivity for the user. Milwaukee says each tool features hardened jaws for more gripping power on jobsite material, and is made from chrome plated forged alloy steel for maximum durability and rust protection. A traditional release lever design provides further jobsite functionality and convenience for increased productivity, the company says.

Fuel system additive Rislone introduces its Diesel Fuel System Treatment, a diesel fuel additive with ULSD sulfur substitute that the company says aids in fuel system cleaning, offers lubrication, removes contaminants, fights corrosion, and helps to prevent fuel from gelling and going bad. Rislone Diesel Fuel System Treatment is designed to work with all light-, medium- and heavy-duty diesel engines including ULSD and biodiesel. It will not harm the engine or any emissions components, including catalytic converters, particulate filters, EGR valve or DEF systems, the company says. One bottle is concentrated to treat up to 35 gallons of diesel fuel.

Off The Line Spotlighting a new OEM innovation Kenworth adds automatic option for T880 Kenworth Truck Company is now offering the fully automatic 7-speed Allison 4700 Rugged Duty Series (RDS) transmission on the 116.5-in. BBC Kenworth T880 short hood spec’d with a Paccar MX-13 or MX-11 engine. Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director, says the Allison 4700 RDS allows truck operators to creep slowly and perform other low-speed maneuvers handy in ready-mix applications where drivers require a truck with maximum speed control for job site maneuverability in steep and difficult terrain, or with mixer trucks that move slowly while pouring concrete for street curbs, driveways or other projects in confined spaces. A lower first gear ratio and an optional second ‘deep reverse’ make the truck maneuverable particularly on steep grades and in tight settings. The transmission also features no-power interrupts, providing full power shifts and allowing full use of the engine’s horsepower, the company says.
