Welcome,
friend of SCA, to our inaugural annual report!
We are pleased to launch this exciting piece for a couple of reasons. First, this publication captures the essence of what God has done in our school this past school year. This is an important process for any organization which allows for celebration of great accomplishments and reflection on various aspects of our school programs that should move our hearts to express gratitude to God for all He has done in our midst this past year. Secondly, such a publication becomes a very nice and concise way to communicate with our school families and friends. As you leaf through its pages, I trust you will agree it is very attractive and professionally done. Contained within are stories of SCA members, both past and present, that I believe will bring a smile to your face. We have summaries of sports seasons and recaps on a busy fine arts year. We also have human-interest pieces on students who have accomplished much on the field of competition as well as in the classroom. We visit with alums to see what God is doing in their lives following their days at SCA. This publication truly captures the spirit of Sherwood Christian Academy! As we bring this school year to a close, we have the opportunity to say good-bye to our headmaster, Dr. Glen Schultz. After 46 years in education and nine at the Academy, Dr. Schultz will be transitioning from full-time schoolwork to full-time consulting. His investment not only at SCA, but in countless schools over the years has been tremendous--and he is not finished! I hope you enjoy the article on Dr. Schultz. And if you haven’t done so yet, please drop him a note of thanks for his faithfulness and godly leadership to our school. He is a special friend to many at the Academy and will be greatly missed. Looking forward, we will be entering our 30th year of Christian schooling this fall. For some, this may be hard to believe! God has been faithful to have His hand of protection and provision over the Academy for three decades. On May 16, we graduated another class bringing our alumni base to 775 strong! This coming year’s senior class currently holds 41 students, which will allow us to eclipse the 800 mark. This June, we will be breaking ground on a major capital expansion that will not only bring the elementary school out to Old Pretoria Road, but will bring with it a new kitchen and cafeteria, a new state-of-the-art science lab, and a new media center. As you can see, our future is bright at SCA. Please know I am both humbled and excited to assume the role of headmaster at such a time as this, and know I covet your prayers. With God’s help, together we will see another 30 years of effective Christian school ministry to the greater Albany area all to the glory of God.

“If you have the grades and the scores, colleges come looking for you. You can go anywhere you want,” says Brenda Keefe, guidance counselor at Sherwood Christian Academy. And they came looking for the students in this year’s class! As a whole, the class of 2014 was ambitious in applying to many colleges including prestigious Ivy League schools such as Yale, as well as respected universities including Duke, Clemson, UGA, Samford and the University of Mississippi just to name a few.

FINANCIAL SNAPSHOT 2013-14
“This is an unbelievable opportunity. It took less than five minutes of my time to turn my state tax dollars into tuition assistance for a student at Sherwood. But the best part is the overflowing of my heart knowing I was able to help put a child at SCA and be exposed to God’s Word daily. Count me in every year.” -Sherwood Donor Through the Georgia Education Expense Tax Credit the state has created an incredible opportunity for taxpayers to redirect a portion of their state income tax liability to improve pre-k through 12th grade educational opportunities in Georgia. Individual and corporate taxpayers are eligible to receive a Georgia income tax credit - not a mere tax deduction - for contributions made to Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program. In six years, $838,468 has been contributed to SCA through 158 unique donors participating in the GOAL program. For the 2014 tax year there were 82 different donors with contributions totaling $192,882 before the program closed January 19. Donors can designate that their contributions be used to provide scholarships to students who desire to attend SCA. We are proud to be one of the 123 private schools participating in the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program.
As we recap the financial year, we are blessed to have God’s hand of favor on our school as He provides for us through faithful friends and families of the Academy. As our school continues to grow, so do our opportunities to minister. Giving you an update on resource allocation is part of our responsibility to you and part of our accountability to ourselves. In summary, tuition rates for the 2013-14 school year were $6585 per elementary student (1st-5th) and $6,840 per secondary student (6th-12th). Total tuition and fees collected this year was $2,828,285 based on 494 students, an increase of 40 students from 2012-2013. We are blessed to have 40 qualified and dedicated teachers who are committed to the mission and vision of SCA. The average teacher compensation (salary and benefits) for 2013-14 is $33,935. Employee compensation accounts for 72% of our expenses.

UGANDA
Nine years ago, Jason Schultz came to Sherwood Christian Academy and started to implement a global mission program for high school students. During Thanksgiving break, Coach Schultz, who plans to move to Uganda, led a team to the small African country that has become loved by many SCA students. Jeremy and Tracy Davidson, who served in the Ukraine for two years with Operation Mobilization, led, for the first time, a second team of students to the Netherlands and Germany. The Uganda team, which consisted of 11 SCA students and 4 chaperones, worked alongside AMG International and Bundles of Love. They visited childcare centers, homes of sponsored children, and Christmas parties at schools.
10FAITH FAITH 10
Jordyn Paramore’s favorite part of the trip was the home visits because, “It was a wakeup call. I was sitting in a house like a cardboard box with my name-brand backpack on, and I realized how truly blessed I am.” For two weeks, the team experienced true poverty while in Uganda. Seth King, who has been to Uganda twice, says, “My worldview has expanded along with my view of God.” His sister Hannah adds, “It just has shown me how big our God truly is.” Hannah also had the joy of meeting her sponsor child, Joseph, whom she has been sponsoring for four years. One of the biggest lessons Jordyn says that has changed who she is today was to see people content with nothing. She adds, “Being a ‘happy Christian’ should not be determined by material possessions.” The school plans to continue their work with AMG and Uganda to advance the Gospel, in hopes that their students graduate as culturally-aware, well-rounded individuals who want to change the world.

NETHERLANDS
On the other side of the spectrum, the Holland team, which I had the joy and privilege to be a part of, landed in the prosperous city of Amsterdam and took a train south to the city of Maastricht. Timothy Birney, who used to teach Spanish at SCA, has been there with the International Mission Board almost a year in language school. The team was trained to prayer walk and narrative map the streets of Maastricht to help Mr. Birney make connections with the Dutch people. Walking miles a day, the team prayed for shopkeepers, waiters, and people God put in their path. They truly learned what “praying without ceasing” meant. When asked what God taught her through the whole trip, Taylor Glow explains, “Missions for Him is not always about having results right away… Forming relationships with people and showing them the love of Christ is
sometimes the best way to win them over.” The team also attended a house church, which is based off the early church in Acts. After a few days, the group headed back to Amsterdam to work with two other IMB missionaries and their families. The team prepared an American Thanksgiving meal for the neighbors and friends of the families, served them, and had crafts for the children. They also spent time playing soccer with kids and took pictures of the island of Ijburg to create a virtual prayer walk for Americans who want to join the missionaries praying for Holland. After a tearful good-bye to Mr. Birney, the team left completely changed, having grown closer to each other and to God. For me, coming back from Holland radically changed my view on missions. As Americans, we think missionaries live in mud huts teaching illiterate people about the Gospel, but that is not the case. There are lost people everywhere, and those who live in countries like Holland have the mindset, “I have everything I need, why do I need the Gospel?” There is not a day that goes by that I do not think about my time in Holland, and hopefully, I will return there.

On Saturday, May 10, cheers and excitement filled the soccer field at Frederica Academy as the Sherwood Christian Lady Eagles celebrated their new title of State Champions. The Lady Eagles shut down Monsignor Donovan in the final round of the GISA AA State Soccer Championship, 3-0. This day also made a new mark in the history books for Sherwood Christian Academy as a whole--the Sherwood Christian Lady Eagles soccer team is the first team in the school’s history to hold a State Championship Title.
14 SHERWOOD ATHLETICS
Katelyn Cuff scored the first goal of the day which was followed by two more goals, one by Kylee Harrod and the other by Hannah King. Both the team’s defense and offense were consistently strong throughout the game. Lady Eagle goalie, Hannah Thompson, walked away with six saves, defeating Monsignor Donovan’s chance of scoring on Sherwood Christian. The championship game was their 15th consecutive win for this season. During the tournament they also shut out Arlington Christian, Trinity Christian, and First Presbyterian for the win. In fact, Monsignor Donovan allowed only two goals all season leading into the final game! The ladies had an amazing season filled with strong defensive and offensive strategies and hardworking players that helped them succeed in their fight for the title. Their overall record for the season was 21-2-1, an improvement from last year’s season. In addition to the great stats, the Lady Eagles had as a team some players stand out among the rest with awesome individual stats as well. Hannah Thompson had a season shutout record of 17 total and an average of .589 goals, which is a single season record. On average our team scored a total of six goals per game, led by Kylee Harrod, Jordyn Paramore and Hannah King. Hannah King set a single season record of 25 assists and also scored 18 goals this season. Kylee Harrod had 32 goals setting a single season scoring record. Jordyn Paramore broke the career scoring record of 76 with a total of 87 goals, with a year left to go. Coach Jason Schultz says, “This year’s State Championship is a culmination of years of hard work. I have coached many of the girls for 4, 5, 6, and even 7 years. The players and parents have bought into the program, and it shows in this amazing accomplishment. I want to thank players and parents for their willingness to sacrifice time and money (camps, retreats, and so on) into this team. This team is a quality group of girls both on and off the field, in the classroom and out of the classroom.”
We know that every good and perfect gift comes from God, so we give Him the thanks and praise for this State Championship!

CHAMPIONS Article by Emily Thompson

Five! Four! Three! Two! One!
Shouts of excitement rang throughout the Terrell Academy gym on that January night. They had done it! The Sherwood Christian Academy Eagles had just beaten Valwood School and had won the title of GISA AA Region 3 Champions. The scoreboard read 54-47 when the final buzzer rang. Dozens of students ran down the bleachers—storming the court. Joy radiated from their faces. Each and every one of the students knew what their classmates had to overcome to win this title, and they were so happy that their team had succeeded. When asked to recall the night, senior, Parker Hatcher was at a loss for words. Finishing his senior year with Sherwood’s first basketball region championship in almost half a decade is quite an accomplishment. When describing the season, Seth King states that it was “challenging, yet rewarding. Being region champions is great, but it probably could not have been done without Coach [Vince] King.” Every spectator there that night would agree that no one person led the team to victory. It was a group effort. Each and every player worked together to get the job done. The student section cheered on their team while the coaches led the players with skill and passion. All of these were the driving force behind the Eagles’ victory. Without any one of these, the region title may not have been attained. With three of the eleven players graduating, Sherwood still has a bright future ahead. When looking forward to next year’s season, nearly every fan, coach, and player will agree that it should be a great year as well. With the majority of the team returning, Sherwood should have a good chance at doing well in next year’s region. Although Sherwood will be moving from the GISA to the GICAA, this should not affect their chances at bringing home a title in the future.

As I settled myself in the plush seats of the Darton Theatre, I had high expectations for the upcoming performance. Sherwood’s last high school play, Seussical the Musical, was a grand success and I heard superb reviews regarding this year’s showing of Beauty and the Beast. My surroundings faded into darkness until I could faintly see the rows in front of me. The theater began to fill with the beautiful notes being poured out by the live
18 THE ARTS
orchestra. Slowly the music began to rise, and with it my anticipation, when suddenly a light flicked on center stage. The spotlight focused on the figure of a lone prince standing arrogantly on stage. Then the deep voice of some omnipresent speaker began to narrate the prince’s tale.
Every aspect of this play, from the stunning costumes and sets, to the strategic lighting and sound effects, contributed to this amazing performance. This beloved fairytale was truly brought to life due to the careful planning of Director Stephen Hand. “At the beginning of the fall, we practiced roughly six hours a week. As we got closer to the show in early November, we were looking at closer to twelve hours a week.” The long hours of arduous rehearsing truly paid off. “We opened an extra performance due to the high demand and filled every seat on the Friday evening performance. Many people commented that they were coming back and word-of-mouth was a huge marketing tool in getting more attendees. We sold nearly 1,100 tickets among the four performances.” Of course a play of this magnitude could not be managed by a single person. Mr. Hand praised Ms. Christine St. Jacques’ work as choreographer, “This was the second year collaborating with Christine and she has always been a pleasure to work with. We have
a great relationship where I am the director of the show but I rely greatly on her knowledge and creativity.” It is also evident a lot of hard work went into the elaborate sets. Those were handcrafted by Aaron St. Jacques and Glenn and Michael McLendon. Mr. Hand has also developed a strong relationship to the cast. “We love each other…they know that ultimately I want them to succeed and while I try to be as tactful and encouraging in the process, excellence is what we strive for.” There is a place for everyone in Sherwood’s musicals whether you are a star performer or it is your first time. This was the first year being part of a musical for almost half the students that were in Beauty and The Beast. The number of participants also significantly increased since last year from 25 students to 40 students. A large number of those who were in the play also signed up for Mr. Hand’s chorale class during the second semester. This class has grown from its original 16 members to 42 members. Mr. Hand was very confident in the talent shown from his group of students and entered them in the ACSI Music Festival.

“We were the largest group that performed and we received the highest score possible. The music that we performed was at a collegiate level and the students rose to the challenge with great excellence.” Mr. Hand says he is “excited about next year’s performance and we are holding back on announcing the title of the show based on how many we have registered for the class. It will most likely be

an older Broadway revival.” Through the Fine Arts classes offered at Sherwood, students are able to express their creativity in a fun environment that strives for excellence. The plays are orchestrated at a high level of professionalism and offer entertainment that is suitable for all ages making the shows enjoyable for the entire family. Beauty and the Beast was a huge success and next year’s show should be just as incredible.

MOVING ON

Driving up to 1418 Old Pretoria Road, the pecan trees fade to your left and uncover a dramatic change to the Sherwood Christian Academy campus. With brand new facilities and renovations to the existing buildings, the campus is almost unrecognizable. More expansive. More advanced. More fitting for a school that strives to glorify God through everything they do. Meet the Need, a campaign that started with a massive overhaul of Sherwood Baptist Church, has now reached the campus of Sherwood Christian Academy. Groundbreaking has already begun, and the vision of a unified school with all the modern advances will be a reality in the Fall of 2015.
22 CAMPUS LIFE
Jim McBride, Chairman of the School Committee and Executive Pastor at Sherwood Baptist, says, “SCA is one of the largest mission ministries of Sherwood Baptist Church. Over 127 churches are represented with the SCA family.” To the church, it made sense to include the renovations at the school within the Meet the Need campaign. The decision to unify the school to one campus has been long and thought out. McBride also says, “The land that we, as church, designated for education has created the opportunity for synergy between the sports park and the school. After much research and exploration of ideas we believed the timing was right.”
CAMPUS LIFE

The new buildings and renovations will include a new cafeteria, media center, additional classrooms and administrative offices. The science lab will receive an overhaul and improvements to classrooms and lighting will also be addressed during the project. Dr. Brian Dougherty, Headmaster of SCA, says, “I am so looking forward to this essential project. Being together on one campus has so much upside for both elementary and secondary schools. The upgrades in the facilities will help us better serve our current families and be a huge marketing tool for our school! This project positions us well for the future. 24 CAMPUS LIFE

SHERWOOD CUP
BY AMY PARR
For the past several years, the high school Student Council has hosted Sherwood Cup in order to unify classes, create competition between the grades and provide a fun day for all. In preparation for this annual event, students worked at earning points for their class throughout the school year. This year, activities that earned points included collecting the most cans and money during the Great Turkey Race, having the most people wear their t-shirts on theme t-shirt days, winning the spirit competitions at pep rallies, and participation during homecoming and spirit week events. Above all, students are encouraged to have good sportsmanship during the competition. On March 28, the classes came together and competed in a myriad of athletic, academic, trivia, and video game competitions. This year’s outside activities were rained out as we headed into the 2nd block of competition so some of our favorite competitions were cancelled. A few of them, however, took place in the gym where organizers could fit them into the schedule. The day ended with full class competitions such as “Over and Under” and Tug of War. Student council members tallied up the points earned throughout the year as well as scores from the day of competition. The winner of this year’s Sherwood Cup in the high school was 12th grade. The middle school winner was 6th grade. Each year a sportsmanship award is awarded to the class with the most Christ-like attitude and sportsmanship. The 12th grade won the sportsmanship award for the high school grades, and there was a tie for the middle school award that was given to 6th and 8th grade.
Congratulations to the 12th and 6th grades! 26 CAMPUS LIFE
EAGLE CUP

On Monday, April 21, SCA held its inaugural Eagle Cup Golf Marathon fundraiser. Twenty-two golfers met at River Pointe Golf Club early in the morning, all with the common goal of golfing 100 holes. In the first round of 18 holes, golfers had three opportunities to win prizes for hole-in-one and one prize was given for closest-to-the-pin. It turns out golfing 100 holes is quite a physical challenge! Many golfers were successful fulfilling their goals to golf 100 holes. A few even surpassed that. The SCA Athletic Booster Club solicited business sponsors while golfers and students collected donations from friends and family. Together we raised nearly $50,000! The money raised will be used to purchase new athletic equipment and playground equipment for the new playground once the campuses are joined. On May 7, the top-earning students from each grade level competed in a putting contest, called Putt-to-Win, to win cash prizes. Prizes were awarded to the student from each building that putted closest to the hole. The elementary winner was Grant Fricks, the middle school winner was Maddie Allen, Dallas Ausburn was the high school winner, and Peggy Bullock was the faculty winner.

FREE TIME is something Emily Thompson has little experience with these past few years at Sherwood. This college bound, Student Council President will cap off what’s been a wonderfully, fun, crazy and busy senior year when she graduated May 16th. Looking back over her time at Sherwood, Emily points to the friendships being her biggest joy. “With this as my senior year, I have seen many good friendships really deepen. I am very grateful for that.” Opportunities such as her trip to Washington DC through Mitchell EMC have given her the chance to meet her Congressional Representative and a Senator as well as other students from around Georgia and the rest of the country. Last fall, for a third time, she oversaw the student’s canned food drive to benefit the Lord’s Pantry, where Sherwood students raised over $2000 to help feed the area’s less fortunate. Emily was involved in One Act Drama and was a member of the literary team. “Last year, I got to play the part of M’Lynn, the mother character portrayed by Sally Field in our version of Steel Magnolias. That was a blast.” The Literary Team won Region and Emily also performed a Dramatic Interpretation of a monologue of a young lady whose memory seems to fail as her after school activities involve intentional hit and runs with pedestrians. “It’s a character that’s completely at odds with anything I would do,” says Emily. When asked about favorite classes, she was a bit hesitant to reply for she has enjoyed all of the classes at Sherwood. When pressed for a
favorite, she narrowed it down to Christian Thought and Comparative Religions. “What I love doing is taking a critical look at a topic, news or current event, then to compare it through a biblical mindset. Is it good or bad? I love that it’s debate. It encourages you to develop your own viewpoint.” As for picking a college, it’s been a family affair. “We’ve visited schools around Georgia, the Southeast and even Boston where I visited Harvard and Yale. However, after looking at those schools as well as UGA, Clemson and Samford, Emily chose Mercer University. She’s already found her roommate, thanks to the Mercer University page on Facebook. When pressed about her future plans, she revealed that she plans to study both International Business and Accounting. Her dream job is to work for a mission board where she can use the skills as a leader and organizer, along with her academic talent and passion for travel to make a real difference in the world. “I’ve prayed for direction and I feel this is what God is leading me to do.” Obviously, she’s looking forward to having a little break this summer. Of course, we’ve left off the fact that she’ll be heading to Israel this summer with Student Leadership University. Sigh.
The Senior Spotlight is on the ever-busy, but-going-lots-of-places Emily Thompson.

Anna Laine has paved the way for SCA’s future softball players and has left a strong legacy to follow. Whether in the classroom or on the softball field, Anna Laine reflects Christ in everything she does. Because of her patient demeanor and willingness to help others, she was voted as team captain her junior and senior years. After graduation in May, she plans to attend Samford University. There she will study nursing to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner with a specialization in pediatric oncology. As a classmate and friend of Anna Laine, I look forward to seeing how God will use her life to leave an impact not only on the world of athletics but on the lives of everyone she meets.

NIGEL WALTON ARTICLE BY CAROL CHARLES PHOTO BY TODD STONE
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:8
is Nigel Walton’s favorite Bible verse, and you wouldn’t have to know him for very long before you understood why.
Nigel came to Sherwood Christian Academy as he put it, “to discover Christ in math, English, etc.” That is exactly what he has done! His fellow classmates call him a preacher because the more of God’s Word Nigel absorbs, the more he shares with his Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria. As a middle school student, Nigel has participated in almost every sport - football, track, soccer and tennis. But, he is much more than an athlete--he excels in drama. Just this spring he played Captain Hook in the middle school production of Peter Pan, Jr., and last November he delighted audiences with his performance as the rude, conceited, small-minded, and narcissistic Gaston in the high school musical,
Beauty and the Beast. You might think that Nigel would let his academics suffer in order to participate in so many different areas, but you would be wrong, very wrong! Nigel is an honor roll student and vice president of the National Junior Honor Society. It should come as no surprise that he is looking forward to being in high school and the chance to go on the mission trips during the year. Whatever he is doing, Nigel is using his opportunities at SCA to make Jesus known to uttermost parts of his world, and he is probably singing it to the tune of a Frank Lloyd Webber hit as he does it!

THOMAS WALLER ARTICLE BY JILL JOHNSON
A belt filled with various shiny, metal loops and almost no actual belt left, is evidence of a commitment few Cub Scouts have. Taking the time to count them all would total 19. Each one boasting a special skill or accomplishment with a precise, colorful triangle. Looking up from the belt, you would see the same color and commitment in the young, red-headed boy who is wearing it. Thomas Waller is an exceptional Boy Scout, but a more fitting compliment to his character would be that he is an exceptional Eagle. One of Thomas’ teachers, Mrs. Phyllis King says, “Thomas is the ultimate example of what being an SCA Eagle is all about. He’s a great example for others, a diligent worker and a silent leader. Choosing to do nice things for his school and classmates, he goes above and beyond without being asked.” Thomas has been attending SCA since K4 and was in 5th grade this past year. He is the son of Bill and Johnetta Waller, and has a brother in the 10th grade, John Waller. He is also an active member of First United Methodist Church. Kids who are passionate about helping others, improving themselves and honoring Christ are the leaders we strive to grow at SCA. What a great example Thomas is of all these things! GLEN SCHULTZ ARTICLE BY PATRICIA ADAMS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TODD STONE
My prayer is that during my tenure at Sherwood Christian Academy, our students have developed a biblical worldview that is shaping all of life for them – no matter where God calls them and how He sees fit to use them in many walks of life. This is what Dr. Glen Schultz believes is the school’s greatest accomplishment and his most meaningful legacy. He retired as SCA’s headmaster on June 30, 2014.

A devout Christian and devoted teacher with an abiding passion for educating young people according to biblical standards, Dr. Schultz joined Sherwood Baptist Church in 2003 as a strategic planning consultant for both the church and school. He was named an associate pastor of the church and SCA’s headmaster in 2005. As part of Sherwood’s planning team, he was instrumental in developing the mission statement, core values, and operating principles that still guide SCA today.

“When the Lord led me here, Sr. Pastor Michael Catt 230% challenged me to help unite the home, church, and school under 880% the philosophy of ‘kingdom education,’” says Dr. Schultz. “My goal 1,329% always has been to put into practice the biblical principles that are the foundation of Kingdom Education.” The book – a declaration of “God’s Plan for Educating Future Generations” – was written by Dr. Schultz as his “life message.” Published in 1998, it quickly received universal reviews as “a must-read for every Christian parent.” Dr. Schultz beams when he talks about SCA. He says, “I have strived to lead the staff in fulfilling the school’s mission to help raise a generation of Christ-like leaders.” His life verse is 3 John 4, “I have no greater joy than to hear my children walk in truth.” Talking about the 500 students currently enrolled at SCA, and all others he has taught, coached, and led over the past 46 years, Dr. Schultz exclaims, “All I can say is WOW – amazing young people and an amazing God! They bring joy to my heart! And this is the greatest reward I could ever ask for.”

And about “our fantastic staff,”
Dr. Schultz declares, “These 70 men and women are Christ-like servants who aim for excellence in everything. I am amazed at their commitment to the Lord and students.” “Everything that has been accomplished at SCA the past nine years is due to the support of the church’s leadership and the efforts of an amazing faculty and staff,” Dr. Schultz says. For example, during his tenure… • SCA was accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in June 2007 and reaccredited in 2014. • All of the school’s teachers are certified by the ACSI. • The church and school became more united as an integral ministry of Sherwood Baptist Church. • More than 90% of SCA graduates now attend college. • The student/teacher ratio is 11:1. • A strong student mission effort was developed with teams serving in the Bahamas, Peru, Greece and Uganda.

Looking ahead,
Dr. Schultz says, “A strong biblical foundation is in place at SCA. The leadership is extremely qualified and competent to continue moving the Academy forward. With the expansion of facilities, and combining the two campuses, I see a very bright future for our school.” “The Lord has clearly led me to know it is the right time to turn the leadership over to Dr. Dougherty,” Dr. Schultz says. He will stay busy within the realm of the widespread and successful kingdom education concept, giving “particular attention to training and mentoring the next generation of church and school leaders in a biblical philosophy of education.” The Schultzes are staying in Albany. “My wife, Sharon, has been my God-given helpmate for the past 45 years,” Dr. Schultz says with obvious admiration and affection. “Now I will have the flexibility to be there more for my family.” The Schultzes have three grown children and six grandchildren ranging in age from eight to seventeen. Summing up his nine years with Sherwood Christian Academy, Dr. Schultz says, “It has been such a privilege, and God has taught me so much through Michael Catt’s preaching and leadership. I am humbled to have been given this opportunity to serve such wonderful people – staff members, parents and students -- in such a wonderful place. I trust that God has been pleased by my service here. He needs to get all the glory for any and everything that has been accomplished.”

SHARON HOWARD
MISS KINDE Mrs. Sharon Howard, also known as ”Miss Kindergarten,” has spent her twenty-nine year career at Sherwood Christian Academy. She molds the hearts and minds of young students by teaching them about Jesus through the easiest and most natural way she feels possible, through God’s creation. Her classroom portrays many aspects of nature, and one of the best ways she depicts this is through her nature shelf. Introducing new teaching methods to kindergarten students, she makes the learning process more understandable through hands on teaching. She views young children as visual learners.
“You can tell them about a bird’s nest, but until you pull the bird’s nest out and show a picture of the bird that has built the nest, it is harder for them to understand.” 38

Mrs. Howard is privileged to lead preschool chapel twice a month on alternate Fridays. The children view chapel as going to church at school, and Mrs. Howard herself is referred to as the “preacher” by her students. One of Mrs. Howard’s favorite chapels is a unit she covers in the spring, in which she allows her students to see her collection of bird’s nests, fabric birds, and pictures of birds. This creates a visual and hands on learning experience for the children that teaches them more about the marvels of God’s creation. As kindergarten graduation draws near, Mrs. Howard always feels privileged to have been able to teach her children for 180 days of the school year and watching them grow and mature, but says it is hard to let them go because of the special bonds created with each of her individual students. Mrs. Howard finds total delight when she knows she has planted a seed in each of her student’s hearts about Jesus.

MATT MELVIN ARTICLE BY BRYAN DODD

MEET MATT MELVIN.
He’s a 1996 graduate of Sherwood Christian Academy.
“When I first visited Sherwood, I immediately noticed it was like a family. Everyone watched out for each other. We formed lasting relationships then and many of those relationships are still going strong today.” Sports were his passion at Sherwood. His first introduction was through basketball coach Dale Hatcher. He added that Michael Catt was always there, serving almost as a second dad to every one on the team. However, it was Coach Ron Reed that perhaps made the most lasting impact on Matt. “Because he died so young, I never got the chance to tell Coach Reed that it was his testimony that set my faith in motion and helped me to accept Jesus as my Savior. When I heard his witness, I knew it was time and I was ready to commit my life to the Lord.” That love of God and devotion to faith has been at the center of his life. He’s a happily married father of two, general manager of Digital Express Wireless and conducts business sales there as well.

“Our approach to business is to always keep an eternal perspective. Just as I learned at Sherwood, it’s all about treating people just as we were taught with the Bible, living by the Golden Rule with each and every customer.” Digital Express is a Verizon Wireless retailer, with 11 locations across South Georgia, offering home internet, smart phones, tablets and accessories. “We’re a national brand, with a hometown feel. My goal is to understand my customer’s needs and make their lives better.” For Sherwood students today, Matt offered this advice –
“LET FAITH BE YOUR FOUNDATION. LIFE WILL THROW YOU CHALLENGES, TEMPTATIONS AND OBSTACLES, BUT AT YOUR CORE IS YOUR FAITH. LET IT GUIDE YOU. AND ALWAYS KEEP THAT ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE.”

Class of 2013 Troy University (AL) Majoring in Biomedical Science
Would like to go to medical school and eventually do medical missions
Recently, Dr. Dougherty caught up with a recent graduate to see how well college is going and the role SCA played in her adjustment and success. What three words describe your first year in college? Challenging because everything is new from life in high
school. I also already decided to change majors from nursing to pre-med because I believe God was pushing me to go further in my training. Exciting because you are on your own and taking steps to be independent and to grow up. Fun because of the new friends I have met, especially new Christians that I am now spending time with and doing life with.
What were some of your big challenges this year? What subjects did you feel especially prepared for? The biggest challenge was finding that friend support system. As I prepared to go to college last summer, I had arranged to room with a childhood friend from Florida. Unfortunately, at the last minute, she had to back out and was unable to attend Troy. I went to school knowing no one! I wanted to begin making the meaningful and lasting relationships I enjoyed at Sherwood. It took a long time. The first semester was lonely. It wasn’t until December that I met some girls I thought could be those close-knit friends. Those relationships grew second semester and I had a great time with this core group of friends. I am thankful to learn that I could really rely on God for a very important part of my college experience.
How well did SCA prepare you for college?
Really well! Initially, I thought I was almost over prepared by SCA. I found many classes to be review from high school. I had little trouble balancing my studies and my other interests. I also found that the training I received at home, Sherwood Baptist Church, and SCA gave me a firm foundation to stand on in all areas of my life. I noticed it especially in my college ministry group. I made it a priority to connect with a Christian ministry called Campus Outreach. In different meetings and conversations, I realized just how much I already knew! I am thankful that I was able to draw from my previous preparation to help others with life questions and other spiritual issues.

Thanks to Mrs. Shepard, Anatomy class! Let me add that all of the dual enrollment classes I took at SCA allowed me to already complete my history requirement as well as my freshman English. And the advanced math I took at SCA met my first year math requirement too. I am thankful I took these classes in high school.
Did you have your faith challenged going to a state school? I did not have my Christian faith challenged directly but I did take an ethics class with a very postmodern thinking professor who I did not agree with most of his beliefs and teaching. Ironically, his ideas on ethics were pretty far out there. I had to deal with this situation and understand my role. I did what was required of me and moved on. On a personal level, I met a girl who professed Christ yet had a pretty humanistic worldview. I decided to invest in her and we began a Bible study together. Some of her questions were hard to answer. I would call some people from back at home including my parents to get some answers. I am glad I had these people as a resource. I am committed to helping her and investing in this relationship.
What advice would you give the upperclassmen at SCA?Take advantage of every opportunity you have with the people
around you now! Don’t wish away the present and dream about the future so much, hoping to be out of high school. Choose to be there! Pour into your classmates and invest in relationships with the people in your life. Choose to grow spiritually. Bible class at SCA was essential for me. Make the decision to learn, soak it in, and apply it to your life!
ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB The Athletic Booster Club, which is designed to support, encourage, and enhance SCA athletics, was restructured in the second half of the school year with a new executive board in place led by President Andy Boyett (Drew, R 9th grader). We are pleased to report the following accomplishments in recent months: • • • Assisted the school with the Eagle Cup Golf Marathon held on April 21. The golf marathon raised nearly $50,000 of which approximately $15,000 went to support all of our athletic team budgets for items such as new uniforms, nets, balls, bats, sport-specific equipment, and the like. • • • Re-launched a sponsorship program to allow SCA to partner with local businesses and supporters in a mutually beneficial program that should allow SCA athletics to receive recurring revenue to support our athletes and teams. Look for new signage on the football stadium, softball and baseball fields, and in the gym in the coming school year. • • • Purchased two new gym scoreboards and secured corporate sponsors who will have advertising displays for the coming seasons. A cookout for all coaches is being planned for later this summer with the goal of supporting them by receiving their “wish lists” for the items they need to help their specific sport in the coming months.
Q: What does the Athletic Booster Club need? How can I help? A: We need you, the parents and supporters of our student
athletes, to get involved! If your child is playing interscholastic sports at SCA, then you are automatically a booster club member. This fall during back to school events, the areas needing volunteers will be announced. In order for our programs to move forward, we will need “all hands on deck!” Please make yourself available to serve. It is an expectation of all parents of athletes.
Q: I already pay an athletic fee ($150) for my child each year. What does this fee cover?
A: This money is used to defray some of the basic expenses of
our athletic programs: transportation (driver & fuel), association fees, tournament entry fees, game officials, utilities & field maintenance. It should be noted that the cost of these items exceeds the combined amount we pay as parents. The Athletic Booster Club is responsible for all other program expenses such as uniforms, equipment, and other sport-specific items for our athletes and coaches.
Come by the Athletic Booster Club Table this Fall!

That’s why we’re here. At Sherwood Christian Academy, your child will be prepared for the world they are entering – equipped in mind, body, and spirit.
