cape verde
study abroad
Spring 2011 - Cape Verde Experience + Studio [NJ Unaka] Program - A Residence for my Host Family [Paula Ramos] - How do you design for a country that is not native to your own? We were tasked to not only design and create for the people of Cape Verde, but to design as if we were living as Cape Verdians. By living in the country and experiencing daily residential life, I was able to develop design philosophies based on my own experiences
9 | PORTFOLIO
- Cape Verde has a large shipping industry being they are a major importer of goods. This provides shipping containers as a cheap, spacious and plentiful building material. When installed with lighter colors and minor amounts of insulation, the containers reduce heat gain without eliminating the modern aspects of design
LOW TECH SOLUTIONS - Creating a wind turbine with easily found materials and made without any advanced machinery - Idea is to create a low tech energy source using natural energy and be something simple enough to be built by persons without a mechanical background
PLANNED DEVELOPMENT
≠
RURAL / NO DEVELOPMENT
≠
CONCEPTS - Energy testing measured current and future heat gain of the house [concept improves solar heat gain drastically] - High recycled content and materials easily obtainable in the country [i.e. shipping containers]

FORM
13 | PORTFOLIO
- The form derives from a play on movement as well as program. Containers pushed in define public space and containers pulled out activate private space; living spaces have both uses so there is a push and pull within each floor/apartment allowing for more playful exterior form
03
{PARK}ing lot
guerilla architecture
Spring 2009 - {PARK}ing Lot [Mo Zell] Program - Guerilla Architecture - Our objective was to take action on a site in the City of Milwaukee and bring about awareness about a particular issue or idea - Due to the lack of usable green space and the abundance of surface parking, our goal was to push the idea that “Green is Good” - We chose a large, open, unused site which we made into our own “parking lot” and then covered it with grass, signifying that these lots can be used for something positive and usable rather than unusable parking space; something already in abundance within the city
15 | PORTFOLIO
- Within days of the installation being completed, the city posted signage saying that our installation was a no parking zone. We also discovered that there was evidence of animals using the green space, in many ways signifying that we had succeeded in our mission of turning a desolate area into something that is accepted by nature

dormitory
uwm student housing
Fall 2009 - Architecture Design 1 [John Fox] Program - Dormitory
Image: UWM
- Create a dormitory accommodating 400 beds, with spaces for studying, relaxing, working out, classrooms, and offices - I used music as inspiration due to its energy, movement and ability to effect one’s emotions, similar to daily campus life. The abstracted form of music is expressed in the façade allowing one to read the building as though it were a piece of music
17 | PORTFOLIO
- Each room is designed to separate the various experiences in a dorm room: changing, relaxing and studying
FORM - The form of the dormitory derives from the movement and energy of music, creating unique floor plates; every level correlates to a different part of the musical score BUILDING CONTOUR CONCEPTS - A, B, C FUNCTION - The dorm room is designed with designated spaces, allowing the resident to pass through multiple thresholds, or zones “My Favorite Things by Richard Rodgers

2009 - Tri-North Builders [internship] Program - Urban League of Greater Madison [ULGM] Completion - 2009 - While at Tri-North Builders, I assisted with the building processes ensuring all vendors received bid invitations and completed rankings of submitted bid proposals - On-site experience at the ULGM worksite; completed daily reports, observed the entire building process including the installation of green products [goal for LEED Silver] to verify that LEED status was maintained - Completed meeting minutes for all meetings attended

2012 - Lindsay Heights Neighborhood Stabilization Project Program - 16 individual and multi-family housing units Completion - 2013 [all 16 units] - 16 residential houses [5 single family, 11 duplexes] were in foreclosure and bought by a developer with the intention to renovate these units scattered throughout the Lindsay Heights neighborhood in Milwaukee. The goal is to positively impact the blighted neighborhood to improve the quality of life greatly over time - I assisted in measuring each existing unit in its current state, resolved outstanding design flaws, and developed plan modifications to ensure convenience for new tenants - I created construction documents for all 16 residential properties

2013 - Innovative Bioclimatic European School in Crete Program - K-12 School Completion - TBD (Competition) - The intent of this project is to create a school of the 21st century which will prepare a new generation of scholars to face the challenges of centuries to come. This was accomplished by molding a building that is literally transparent in its anatomy, transcending in its functionality, and transforming in its mission
29 | PORTFOLIO
- As co-designer on this project, I completed all drafting, modeling and rendering as well as assisted in programming, design layout and presentation boards
CORE CONCEPT N TIO RA ST NI MI AD
- The building is inspired by the sea urchin shell from the shorelines of Crete
OL HO SC RY IMA PR
OL HO SC RY IMA PR
- Each programmatic element is identified by a color, giving the user a visual queue as to where they are within the building. Our goal is to make this school as visually exhilarating as possible to help stimulate young minds
N GARTE KINDER
- Traditionally schools are very opaque and our goal is to do the opposite through transparency. This not only brings in light but also allows for unique ways to teach and learn, from both inside and outside of the classroom FUNCTION
E NIN ZZA ME
- Our goal was to create a school that was all encompassing and encourages collaboration, social interaction, and redefines the way students learn
