Cheese Lafayette County is of course known for its ATV Cheese Trail, but the real cheese trail may be the roads linking the working cheese factories that serve as the lifeblood of the county. Down our trail just north of Darlington on Hwy. F you will find Brunkow Cheese, makers of a number of great cheeses including Brun-uusto, a baked cheese you have to taste to believe. Brunkow has a shop open daily to taste and purchase their products. Heading into Darlington you will find Mexican Cheese Producers, Inc. founded in 1994 by Miguel and Martina Leal. Producing the highest quality, authentic Mexican cheese, cream and yogurt products, MCP leads the way into new and growing markets. Their products are available at two Mexican grocery stores in downtown Darlington and on the finest Mexican dishes nationwide. At the crossroads of Hwys. 23 and 11 you will find the Roelli Cheese Company, a family owned business. Roelli General Store offers grocery items, beverages, ice cream cones and is a great place to sample the varieties of cheese they offer. The small batch artisan shelf cured Dunbarton Blue is simply amazing, found from Bistro Campagne in Chicago to Zabar’s in New York not to mention Whole Foods coast to coast. Wisconsin Whey Protein is a manufacturer of highly purified, regular, and instantized, Whey Protein Concentrate powder (WPC-80) and Whey Protein Isolate (WPI-90). Their products are designed to meet the requirements of numerous value-added food applications and is sold both domestically and exported. Get Outdoors & Explore Biking

Darlington and Lafayette County are a beautiful place to bicycle, offering both challenging ascents and some relatively flat routes through breathtaking rural countryside.

Birding The city’s proximity to Yellowstone Lake State Park and Blackhawk Memorial Park provide excellent opportunities for short bird watching excursions. Over 100 species of birds have been observed and recorded at Yellowstone Lake State Park.

Camping Area Camping includes Lafayette County Fairgrounds, Wolf Creek Campground and Yellowstone Lake Campgrounds. See page 5 for Pecatonica River Trails Park information.

Canoeing and Kayaking Paddling The Pecatonica River offers over 90 miles of gentle canoeing. This is the longest unrestricted flow of water in the State of Wisconsin. Scenic bluffs can be seen towering above some sections of the river. It is not uncommon to see beavers, great blue herons or geese along the way.

Fishing Fishing the Pecatonica yields its share of excellent game fish. Catfish, walleye and occasional northern are the main game fish taken from the river. Many of the best fishing spots are accessible only by canoe.

Golfing For golf enthusiasts, the Darlington Golf and Country Club is open to the public and offers a scenic 9-hole course, full bar and restaurant, cart rentals and driving range.

Horseback Riding

History

Darlington takes its name from Joshua Darling

Joshua Darling, a banker from Warsaw, New York and his agents, James M. Keep and J. B. Lynde purchased land from pioneer Jamison Hamilton for the purpose of developing a village to accomodate the flood of mining and farming settlers coming into the area in the 1850’s.

Joshua Darling

Darlington derives its slogan, “Pearl of the Pecatonica” from its history of pearling on the Pecatonica River in the late 1800s. Thousands of dollars of pearls were taken from the waters of the Pecatonica River. So many clams were also taken from the river that a button factory was established in 1901 to utilize the discarded clam shells.

Darlington proudly claims its place among them with its own Parson Brothers Circus. In the early 1800s the six Parson brothers operated their circus around Wisconsin and the neighboring states. Probably the most notable thing that happened was that Al Ringling joined the brothers for the tenting season of 1881. When the Parson’s show folded several of the brothers joined the newly formed Ringling Brothers Circus and traveled with them for a number of years.

Lafayette Genealogy Society The purpose of the society is to assist others in their pursuits to learn more of their heritage; to inform, instruct and educate through programs, meetings and sharing of recourse material, along with promoting the fellowship of persons interested in genealogy. The society is grateful they now have a facility to house and share information and resources that the Matls and others have contributed, not to mention the society’s years of publishing, indexing and charting cemeteries and so much more. The society looks forward to being a productive and contributing asset to the community.

Depot Museum The first depot in Darlington was a combined railroad depot and warehouse and now stands as a monument to those who built and operated the railroad. The Darlington Depot Museum is filled with railroad artifacts; agricultural items; Florence Bennett oil paintings of LaFayette County Depots; old railroad maps; and more. The Museum is open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Call 608.776.8340 for hours. Both museums are free but donations are appreciated.

Historic Main Street Take a walk down Darlington’s Historic Main Street which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the buildings contributing to that designation, The Driver Opera House, is in the beginning stages of a project that will restore its original beauty and provide the community and visitors with a performance arts and cultural center.

Lafayette County Courthouse The central landmark in Darlington is the Lafayette County Courthouse, which holds the distinction as the only Courthouse still in use in the United States that was funded by the estate of one man, Mat Murphy of Benton. The monumental limestone structure features a central rotunda with an elaborate dome. Look around a bit and you can find evidence of Johnny Depp’s visit to the Courthouse when it was featured in the 2009 movie “Public Enemies”.

Lafayette County Historical Museum The Lafayette County Historical Museum is located in the Carnegie Building across from the Courthouse. It features archives for genealogy research as well as displays that depict the lives of early Lafayette County residents. You will find items from the Civil War as well as memorabilia from early businesses, farms, homes, schools and paintings from local artists. The museum is open 1:00-4:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Veteran’s Memorial Thanks to the generosity of so many people and organizations, the Darlington Area Veteran’s Memorial was officially unveiled in 2012. You may visit this spectacular monument at the intersection of Main Street and Cornelia Street. The monument was designed by Darlington Community Schools Art Teacher Greg Bykowski.

Greetings!

from the Mayor of the City of Darlington! Whether you are visiting Darlington for the day or for the weekend, you’ll notice not only our diversity, but also all the fun Darlington has to offer. As Mayor and a resident most people know me as a straightforward, simple guy who loves his hometown and I know you will too. I invite you to come and explore Darlington with it’s rich history, wonderful schools and outdoor recreation.

RELOCATION GUIDE

From shopping to ATVing and stock car races to festivals, we’ve got you covered here in Darlington. Mayor,

Mike McDermott History of the Lafayette County Historical Society In January 1981, a half-dozen people met at the Darlington Public Library to discuss the possibility of forming a local historical group. Enough people indicated an interest in preserving our history to make a formal organization feasible. It was decided to make the group a Lafayette County Historical Society rather than a Darlington Historical Society, and to affiliate with the State Historical Society of Wisconsin.

RELOCATION GUIDE

Courthouse

Schools Redbird Pride!

One of the most interesting historic sites in Darlington is the Courthouse. The Lafayette County Courthouse was built between 1905 and 1907 at a total cost of $136,556.17. When Mr. Matt Murphy from Benton, WI, died in 1903, he bequeathed that 70% of his estate be used toward the construction of a County Courthouse. Today, Lafayette County has the distinction of having the only courthouse still in use in the United States that was paid for solely by one man. Lafayette County is also the home of Wisconsin’s first State Capitol located just outside of Belmont, WI. The courthouse courtroom was used in the filming of “Public Enemies,’’ starring Johnny Depp in 2008.
