WILLIAM PETER KIRCHOFF JR.

SEPTEMBER 15, 2016 On the evening of September 15, 2016, William Peter Kirchoff Jr., known to family and friends as Bill, passed away peacefully in his farmhouse, with his wife and daughter by his side. But it is not the way that he passed that we will remember: It’s the way he lived-fully, simply and unselfishly-that will continue to inspire and positively impact generations to come. Bill was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 1, 1936. He was the second born child of Alice Hansen and William Kirchoff. Throughout his life, everyone who knew Billfrom his family, to his 1954 graduating class at Steinmetz High, to the community of Viola, Wisconsin-knew the SAME Bill. His character was unwavering; and, in times of uncertainty, Bill could always be counted on to stand firm, encouraging others to do the same. Bill was the kind of a man of who stood by his word, the kind of man who lived with respect and compassion f or creatures great and small and the kind of man who didn’t take ordinary things for granted. Bill loved to fly airplanes. He served as a medic in the elite 82nd Airborne Division and aided in highly specialized missions in Panama. He was a long time member of the American Legion. He was a loving father, a proud

grandfather and a devoted husband to Amelia Zaremba Kirchoff, the love of his life. Bill met Amelia in Chicago, when she was working as an architect and he was working as a contractor. They decided to design and build a life together and, on October 27, 1990, became husband and wife. Their shared love for animals inspired a peaceful life on their farm in Viola, Wisconsin, and their love for each other helped it grow. Through the years, when various tragedies threatened to take everything they had,Bill’s tenacity and strength of character pulled them through. His belief and support of her dreams was the foundation upon which GoMacro, the company founded by Amelia and their daughter Jola, was built. Though he will be missed beyond what words can express, his memory and his spirit will be kept alive by his wife, Amelia Kirchoff, his daughters Jola Sonkin, Thea Teresa Bach and Lora Lynne Bates, his stepdaughters, Anna Poplawska and Margaret Guzek and his four beautiful grandchildren Marcellus, Mila, Myles and Mikaela Sonkin. All information regarding the funeral service can be provided by contacting Pratt Funeral Service at 608-647-4808 or visiting their website at www.prattfuneralservice.com. In lieu of flowers or donations, please honor Bill’s life with a toast or a prayer, and most importantly, by celebrating your own life in health, in gratitude, and in love. Wishing you a long and great life

HOW TO CHOOSE…

The Right Mattress A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP IS A NECESSITY Good health and sleep are closely linked. Just as we improve our eating habits for better health, we should also improve our sleep habits for better health. Sleep debt is a costly problem in our society, both fiscally and physically. Four out of every five people suffer from back pain and studies show we are not as productive or safe when we do not get enough rest. Back pain comes in a close second to the common cold as the most frequent cause of lost work time. Sleep should be a priority and not just a negotiable need that is determined by our busy schedules. Good sleep not only lessens costly back problems but helps to prepare us for a more productive, alert and safe day ahead. Poor sleep and back problems are like the chicken and the egg theory. Which came first? Are backaches the cause of lack of sleep or does lack of sleep cause back problems? Both may be helped with the right mattress. The lower back or lumbar region is the most common area for back pain because it bears the wear and tear of bending, stooping, sitting, and lifting. A good mattress supports the back and allows the muscles to rest and rejuvenate during sleep. Poor sleep does not allow this to happen, nor does a poor sleep surface. Experts recommend mattresses that offer superior support without being too hard. The bottom line is: The right mattress is very important to our overall health.

It is important to find a mattress with edgeguard because it gives you more mattress surface to actually sleep on. You might as well use all of it since you are paying for all of it! Everyone has natural curves in their back. Usually the harder the surface the more the back has to drop out of alignment to meet the mattress. The optimal mattress has enough padding to support your back without allowing it to drop out of its natural alignment. A plush mattress with good support will do just that. VALUE Most people sleep about one-third of the life. What else do you do for that amount of time that affects the other twothirds of your life? We think nothing of spending $300 to $400 on a TV that comes with a one-year warranty and that, if you are lucky, will last five years. But many people think it’s appalling to spend $700 to $800 on a new queen mattress that comes with a 10-year nonprorated warranty and will easily last 10 years. This same mattress, if picked properly, will give you many nights of great sleep and ultimately better productive days, too. Many will pay up to 40 percent more for a new car than they did a decade ago, yet the same person expects to pay the $299.99 prices of a decade ago when it comes to buying a new mattress. Value is relative, but when you think of using an item everyday, 365 days a year for 10 years, a good quality mattress for $800 is costing you a little less than 26 cents per day. Shopping for the best value doesn’t mean finding the lowest price. Bargain bedding is no bargain when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. Are you the type of person who will spend $150 on running shoes that you wear three or four times a week but is only willing to spend $330 on a mattress that you sleep on eight hours a night for 10 years? There have been many advancements in mattress manufacturing. Many are designed by orthopedic doctors with proper support and great comfort levels to keep you properly aligned all night. Mattresses have many price points to meet everyone’s pocket book. Bottom line: If you aren’t satisfied with your current bedding and sleep comfort, there is a proper support mattress out there for you in your price range. And remember, how you sleep at night generally determines how you will feel for the rest of the day.

Four out of every five people suffer from back pain and studies show we are not as productive or safe when we do not get enough rest.

THE BIGGEST MATTRESS MYTH The old adage “hard is better” is truly a myth. No single sleep surface is right for everyone. Therefore a store that carries a varied selection of comfort levels is the place to start. Such variables as body temperature, sleep position, and lighting should be taken into account. Mattresses come in plush, pillow-top, ultra plush, ultra plus pillow-top, firm and cushion firm. All these comfort levels are just that - comfort levels. It is different from support level. Support level has to do with the coil count and coil construction. The proper support may be achieved in all of the different comfort levels. Depending on whether you are a stomach, side or back sleeper (or a combination) will determine the comfort level you will sleep better and longer on. And that is the goal. Although there are some exceptions to the rule, a good coil count number to keep in mind for proper support is as follows: Twin 420 or higher, full, 600 or higher; queen, 736 or higher; king, 930 or higher. The quality of fabric and different foams used should also be taken into consideration.

Important Points

1. Mattresses come in plush, pillow-top, ultra plush, ultra plush pillow-top, firm and cushion firm and all can have the same proper support. 2. Find a mattress with edge guard because it gives you more

mattress surface to sleep on. 3. The best foundation is a box spring with a steel center beam and cross rails of steel and wood. 4.Once you choose a comfort level, you’ll want to choose the best mattress in that level that you can afford.

Tips For Shopping 1. Find the support and comfort level that best suits your sleeping habits. 2. Let your body make the final decision. Don’t buy a mattress solely because of the brand name. adno=486954-01

Mission – Driven Schmitt Woodland Hills exists to fulfill our mission of offering people a wide range of quality services and facilities through good stewardship and a Christian philosophy. As a not-for-profit we are committed to our mission of providing high-quality care and services to the senior citizens and those in need of rehabilitation services in Richland County. Not-for-profit institutions exist for the sake of their mission. They exist to make a difference in society and in the life of the individual. The first task of our Leadership is to make sure that everyone sees the mission, hears it and lives it. Governance No one owns a not-for-profit organization in the same way that shareholders own a for-profit corporation. Schmitt Woodland Hills is overseen by a Board of Directors whose members volunteer their time and talents to ensure quality services and management. With no expectation of financial gain, our Board members are committed to making sure we remain true to our mission, respond to local needs, plan effectively for the future and manage financial resources effectively. Our volunteer Board members have a deep awareness of evolving local community needs. They play an important role in bringing our offerings to people outside our immediate community. The Schmitt Woodland Hills Retirement Community has a strong commitment to being an active, contributing member of the localities we serve. We embrace opportunities for social accountability, not only to identify community needs, but to exercise leadership in meeting those community needs.

profits also have been driving important reforms, including reductions in the use of restraints and psychotropic drugs in nursing homes. Schmitt Woodland Hills is in the business of serving others for the long term. As we have expanded and created new buildings, we choose materials and designs expected to stand the test of time. When we use our not-for-profit status to seek tax-exempt financing for construction, we expect the buildings to still be in service for up to 50 years or more. We are not in the business of developing commercial real estate. We are in the business of creating better living options for older citizens or those requiring rehabilitation services. Profits Although all businesses expect to generate returns on investment, there are significant differences in the ways private equity companies and not-for-profits allocate proceeds. • A private equity company’s chief objective is to create financial returns for owners or shareholders. • A not-for-profit like Schmitt Woodland Hills cannot operate for profit or distribute corporate income, but must reinvest returns in ways that support our mission. • Not-for-profits must use funds to help support the mission described in their charter. Every year we are required to demonstrate how our work fulfills that mission and benefits the “greater good” of our local community, society or the world around us. Schmitt Woodland Hills’ true bottom line is not an annual profit/loss statement. It is resident satisfaction.

Does your loved one need more care than you or your family can provide? Things to consider when it’s your turn to care for those who cared for you.

Quality A major study of nursing home quality in the United States and Canada found that not-for-profits consistently delivered better outcomes in four key areas relating to quality: • More and/or higher quality of staffing • Lower prevalence of pressure ulcers • Lower prevalence of restraints • Fewer Government citations for deficiencies A 2014 study published in the Journal of Health Care Finance found lower levels of registered nursing staff in privately owned nursing homes and also linked the lower mix of nursing skills to a significantly higher number of deficiencies. Not-for-profit organizations have been at the forefront of improving services for older persons, pioneering the introductions of new options such as the neighborhood/household model of “small house” nursing homes. Unlike more traditional nursing homes, Schmitt Woodland Hills’ skilled nursing facility has no long hospital corridors, or institutional kitchens or dining rooms. It’s a great, small, home-like environment where everyone knows one another. Not-for-

What You Should Know... • Fewer deficiencies in total • Fewer deficiencies causing harm or jeopardy to a resident • Fewer residents taking antipsychotic medications

Commitment to Staff and Staffing As part of our not-for-profit mission, we recognize that staff satisfaction and commitment are related to sufficient numbers of staff, fair wages and benefits, work flexibility when needed, continuing education/growth opportunities and an environment of respect. Benevolent Care Like many not-for-profits Schmitt Woodland Hills offers residents the assurance of knowing they can have lifelong access to living arrangements and services should they outlive their financial resources through no fault of their own. Each year we provide approximately a half a million dollars in benevolent care to residents who find themselves in just that type of situation. The Continuum of Care Schmitt Woodland Hills offers multiple ways for older persons to find a satisfying living arrangement or the care they need, whether home-based or in living arrangements ranging from independent housing to 24-hour skilled nursing. This continuum of services allows people to access the services they need in whatever place they call home.

Research has shown that the type of nursing home ownership can affect the quality of care. The research showed that non-profit nursing homes offered specific advantages including: • Lower prevalence of restraints • Higher staffing ratios overall • Lower prevalence of pressure ulcers • Higher ranking on the Centers • Lower hospitalization rates for Medicare & Medicaid Services • Higher staffing number of Five-Star Rating System registered nurses

For many people facing a life-limiting illness, hospice is an unfamiliar model for receiving health care. They may correctly equate hospice with comfort-focused, “whole-person” care at the end of life, but most people’s understanding ends there. We are fortunate that Richland County is home to exceptional hospice care that’s available to everyone who needs it in the last six months of their life. Our local nonprofit hospices have some of the most innovative services and facilities available anywhere in the country. Not only is hospice care one of the most comprehensive forms of care people can receive at the end of life, it’s also very affordable. In working toward choosing a hospice, it’s helpful to explore some myths and facts about receiving high-quality hospice care.

Myth: Hospice is for the last few days of life. Fact: People are eligible to receive hospice care when they have 1) a diagnosis of a life-limiting condition, 2) a life expectancy of six months or less and 3) a primary goal of comfort, not cure. They do not need to be bedbound, wheelchair-bound or even homebound to enroll, but two physicians must certify that the person meets the basic hospice eligibility criteria. When patients are able to have hospice care for several weeks or months, there’s more time for hospice staff to support and comfort them—body, mind and spirit. Hospice care also includes emotional and spiritual support for patients’ family members, to help them prepare for the loss and process their grief after the death.

Myth: Hospice is only available to people who have health insurance. Fact: For people who don’t have health insurance, hospices’ charitable care programs can often help. For example, at Agrace HospiceCare, people who need hospice care but don’t have the means to pay for it can receive free or discounted care through Agrace’s donor-supported Care for All program. Myth: When people enroll in hospice care, they have to give up Medicare. Fact: When a patient covered by Medicare chooses to enroll in hospice, their standard Medicare benefits continue—for items and services that are not related to their terminal illness. Care that is related to their terminal illness is typically included within the Medicare hospice benefit, which pays for covered items and services that are provided or arranged by the hospice. When a loved one has a life-limiting illness, hospice can be incredibly helpful. While practices and costs are similar at most nonprofit hospices, certain differences can tip the scales for prospective patients, including the hospice’s accreditation, staff expertise and certification, access to inpatient or residential hospice care, volunteer support and community reputation. It’s wise to ask your doctor to explain your choices and his or her recommendation.

Be informed. Find out about the hospice services available in your area. Visit with representatives from any hospice you are considering.

Myth: All hospice patients must have “do not resuscitate” (DNR) status. Fact: Hospice is patient-driven care. Most hospices encourage patients to make their own choice about whether they prefer to be resuscitated or to die naturally in the event their heart or breathing stops. When patients enroll with Agrace HospiceCare, Madison, their care team talks with them and their family or health care agent to be certain their end-of-life wishes and advance directives are known to, and fulfilled by, their care team. Myth: Hospice care is expensive. Fact: Most patients have minimal out-of-pocket expenses for hospice care, even for medications and equipment that are often needed in the last months of life. The comprehensive care and support provided by hospices is almost completely paid for by Medicare, Medicaid or private health insurance, although there may be small co-payments for medications.

HOW TO MAKE A DECISION

1. Visit with your physician. He or she will help you and your family decide when the time is right for hospice care. 2. Be informed. Find out about the hospice services available in your area. Visit with representatives from any hospice you are considering. 3. If you and a family member resides in a nursing home/assisted living facility, visit with staff there. They can provide you with information on the hospices available. 4. Visit with friends and family members who have used a local hospice service. Find out if they were satisfied with the service they received. Remember, although all hospices provide the same basic services, how those services are rendered will vary from hospice to hospice. 5. Always remember that you and your family have the right to choose which hospice you use. Be leary of physicians, hospital personnel, hospice staff, etc. who attempt to deny your right to choose.

Get the Information You Need From Doctor Visits.

Ask Your Doctor These Five Critical Questions:

• Write down questions in advance. • Bring along a person you trust to write down/ remember what the doctor says. • Ask what tests and procedures are being done and why. • Ask about treatment options. • Complete a Power of Attorney for Healthcare; update it every five years. • Tell your doctor you are comfortable talking about hospice.

1. Can this treatment cure my condition? 2. If I am not cured, how long will this treatment prolong my life? 3. Could treatment complications shorten my life? 4. How will this treatment affect the quality of my life, both positively and negatively? 5. If I choose not to be treated, how long might I live and with what quality of life?

Care & Support Through the Stages of Serious Illness

The reasons for preferring cremation are varied. For some, it seems a more natural process than burial. Others have environmental concerns with burial. Still others are not sure why they feel more comfortable with cremation but are interested in learning more. This article is for all of you. Most funeral homes provide some type of cremation service, but some specialize in providing cremation services. For many consumers it is important the funeral home they select own and operate their own crematory as opposed to transferring the deceased to an off-site crematory. The peace of mind of knowing one funeral home is prepared and experienced to provide the services you require is well worth the effort required to become educated and make an informed choice. Because it is important to be informed, many people choose to make their decisions in advance. Making pre-arrangements with your selected funeral home will help assure your wishes will be carried out following death. It also spares your family from the burden of making decisions during the emotional time after a death. Many people wonder whether cremation is consistent with their religious beliefs. There was a time when some religions disapproved of the cremation process. Today, most permit cremation. It is a good idea to discuss your concerns with your clergy, as individual congregations may differ from nationwide or worldwide church policies. Another reason for preferring cremation is the many options available for services and final disposition. In fact, cremation offers more options than does traditional burial. For example, choices are available in the type and scheduling of gathering or celebration, the final disposition of cremated remains, and ways to remember or “memorialize” the deceased.

Cremation followed by Memorial Service: Following either private or public viewing, the body is cremated. A service or gathering is held at a place of the family’s choosing, to commemorate the life of the deceased. Eulogies, readings, music and the sharing of photos, videos, and personal collections and hobbies are often part of the gathering. The gathering is an opportunity for those who cared about the deceased to remember them in a special way, and to say good-bye. Funeral Service followed by cremation Probably the greatest misconception about cremation is that there can be no funeral. Many people choosing cremation have a traditional funeral service, followed by cremation. The funeral service may be conducted in a funeral home, church, or any other appropriate setting. Clergy may conduct the service, but this is not required. Some will prefer a less formal format of sharing memories and feelings. The funeral service is personalized by including things to help those attending to better know and remember the deceased, such as flowers, photos, videos and music. Choosing a casket, urn, burial vault, and stationery items that reflect the loved one’s life complements these items. Funeral directors who specialize in cremation will have many examples for you to look at and choose from. Anyone who has ever tried to write a family history knows it can take a little time. Planning to personalize a memorial service or funeral service is much the same. The plan may consist of simple, brief notes or a detailed set of directions. With so many choices and options, the value of preplanning becomes evident. No one better understands your wishes than you. Meeting with a funeral director who specializes in cremation services allows you to collect information on options and costs, and to record your wishes for your family to refer to later. You may even want to pre-pay your final expenses as a way of relieving your family from this burden and saving money. There are many good reasons why thoughtful families are beginning to strongly consider cremation. Let an informed funeral professional with experience and special interest in cremation make suggestions as to your options and choices.

The reasons for preferring cremation are varied. If you are interested in learning more, then this article is for you.

Immediate cremation Those preferring to have no services or gathering can arrange for removal of the deceased and immediate cremation. You will want to review cost, administrative requirements, and other details with your funeral director. Many families who choose direct cremation later regret the decision because it ignores their need for closure. Participating in arrangements, viewing the body, and meeting in a formal or informal setting with supportive friends and family are meaningful parts of a ritual, like baptisms and weddings, that help us understand and cope with loss.

Who Is Your Provider? The importance of establishing a primary care provider. The relationship we have with our primary care provider is one of the most important relationships we have. It’s a working relationship focused on maintaining our overall health and wellbeing–a guiding hand through every stage of our lives. A primary care provider is a health care practitioner who provides care to people with common medical issues. These individuals are usually a Doctor (MD), but they can also be a nurse practitioner (FNP, DNP, NP, etc.) or a physician assistant (PA, PA-C). We find ourselves in need of medical care at every stage of our lives, from birth to the end of life. As a result, it’s likely that your primary care provider will be involved in your health care for many years, so it is important to choose someone who you work well with and who makes you feel comfortable. The role of your primary care provider. Primary care providers are your main contact in non-emergency medical situations. They provide preventive care and promote healthy lifestyle choices, diagnose and treat common medical conditions and provide referrals to medical specialists when necessary. Primary care providers typically provide care in an outpatient setting through clinics. If you are admitted to the hospital, depending on the circumstances, your primary care provider may be asked to assist in directing your care. This is most common in cases where longterm medical conditions, such as asthma, may have caused complications resulting in being admitted to the hospital. Having your primary care provider on hand in these situations is important as they are able to provide the hospital staff with a history of the condition as well as provide you with some much needed reassurance. As our needs change, so should our providers As we advance through the various stages of life, we find ourselves needing different forms of care. As we prepare to raise a family, we are most in need of a primary care provider who can provide obstetrical and gynecological care, pregnancy care and lead us up to, and through, a healthy and successful birth. Once we give birth, we may choose to stay with our primary care provider while our newborn child begins their care with a provider who specializes in pediatrics. Our child may stay with their pediatrician until they are 18, when they move on to choosing a general or family practitioner. The cycle continues from there.

It is important that you select the right primary care provider for you and your expected health care needs for each stage of your life. Insurance Many insurance plans place limits on the types of providers you can choose from, so it’s a good idea to contact your insurance provider to make sure you know what your insurance will cover before choosing your primary care provider. If you do not have a primary care provider, and a non-emergency health problem arises, you should seek non-emergency care from an urgent care clinic rather than a hospital emergency room. This will often save you money. TYPES OF PRIMARY CARE PROVIDERS Family Practitioners/General Practitioners: These doctors see children and adults of all ages and in many cases handle obstetrical care and minor surgery. They have also completed a residency program, around 11 years of post-high-school medical education and are board-certified or board-eligible for their specialty.

Obstetricians/Gynecologists: Doctors who specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology often serve as a primary care provider for women, particularly those of childbearing age. Nurse Practitioners: Nurse practitioners go through a different training and certification process than doctors. They are registered nurses (RN) with advanced training in diagnosing and treating illnesses and have the ability to prescribe medications and administer physical exams. Physician Assistant: Physician Assistants also go through a different training and certification process than doctors. They are licensed medical practitioners who work under the direction of a physician (MD). They diagnose and treat illnesses and have the ability to prescribe medications and administer physical exams. The MD who they work under also reviews their work.
