from the director

Dear Reader— After this issue of Access magazine, you’re going to notice some changes. In the same way that our new buildings and renovations are a direct result of your feedback, we’ve been capturing your thoughts and ideas about how you use this publication and what you value. After February 2016, Access magazine will be on hiatus. We’ll be using that time to get organized and ready to re-launch the magazine in the Fall. To help with the transition, we’ve been working to update the Events section on RichlandLibrary.com to make it easier to locate the classes, programs and experiences that you’re looking for. We’ll also continue to publish a summer guide book to help you choose from the hundreds of activities and programs offered June through August. So while you might wonder if the library staff who publish Access are on extended vacations this spring, I assure you they are not. They are working hard to make changes and improvements to the way we communicate with you, our valued customers and loyal Access magazine readers. Thanks for your patience and continued support. We look forward to showing you what we’ve been working on.

Warmly—

Melanie Huggins | Executive Director

winter reading

COZY UP

TO A GOOD BOOK. Together We Read! With cooler temperatures and dreary days, winter is the perfect time to cozy up to a good book. Here are three easy ways to share your love of reading with the whole family. Artwork Provided by South Carolina State Library

1. Read to your children every day.

2. Let your child catch you reading.

Aim for at least 20 minutes a day starting with the day they are born. A child is never too young or too old to hear a good story. Need recommendations? We can help!

Our children want to be just like us. How you spend your time shows them what you value. Teach them that reading is important by picking up a book, newspaper or magazine.

Family Storytime for all ages Share stories, songs and much more while building early literacy skills with fun for the whole family.

Every Richland Library location offers a Family Storytime. Find the location nearest you and join us each week for stories the whole family will enjoy.
