from the director
Dear Readers, If you have read any of my letters before this one, you know that I am immensely proud of my profession, my hometown, and my state—all of which have made tremendous progress over the years. However, the week that I am writing this letter, nine people were murdered as they worshipped at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church, and I am questioning how far we’ve really come. I am quick to defend South Carolina when people make jokes about us. When we find ourselves 47th or 48th on some list intended to show that we lag in education or child wellbeing, I jump to point out areas of innovation and progress. I know our state is one with a complicated history but I also know it is filled with people that are beyond resilient and who have made it their priority to make others’ lives better. Of the lives lost on June 17, one was that of Cynthia Hurd—a 31-year employee and manager at the Charleston County Public Library. In a 2003 interview, Ms. Hurd said the best thing about being a librarian was service—“Your whole reason for being there is to help people.” In that one sentence, she captured the reason most of us in libraries chose this work. We are helpers by nature, and we believe we can make people’s lives better. When I read the stories about the eight other victims, it struck me that they were all helpers. A speech pathologist and track coach. A minster and public servant. Grandmothers, volunteers… all helpers. And by all appearances their faith wasn’t just something that led them to bible study on Wednesday night; it guided their lives.
"We are helpers by nature...we believe we can make people's lives better."
In an interview following the tragedy, SC Senator Darrell Jackson expressed a sentiment about the fleeting nature of our lives here on Earth—“All it takes is one person. One deranged person.” Yes, one person can do the unthinkable in a misguided attempt to set our state back. But one person can also help heal and change lives.
I often tell our staff that you never know when the words you speak to a customer might be the only kind words they hear all day. When the book you recommend could change the course of a child’s future. That one interaction with one customer can be life-altering. We count ourselves lucky when someone thanks us; shares their successes with us; lets us know that what we do makes a difference. But most of the time, we never get to know our impact. We work on faith that what we do matters. In her long career, I feel sure Ms. Hurd was that “one person” for many who knew her. I hope her family and colleagues find comfort in knowing that in helping people find answers, she impacted and changed lives. In their memory, let’s all embody a little more of the spirit of the “helpers” that were lost to us on June 17.
All it takes is one person—

Margin of Victory In the huddle with USC Offensive Tackle Mason Zandi
Name: Mason Zandi Hometown: Chapin, SC Position: Offensive Tackle Major: Political Science Dream Job: Pro Football Player or Lobbyist We’re a library, so of course we have to ask, do you have a library card (Richland or otherwise)? We have a great library on campus—the Thomas Cooper—so our Carolina Card is kind of like a library card. We can go in there 24 hours a day and check out any book we need. Do you prefer a book or an eBook? Now days I’m considered old school. I like the traditional printed text. The smell of a book is always really nice compared to an ebook.
Between football commitments and school, how do you stay motivated in the classroom? A lot of my family never had the opportunity to go to college. I feel like doing my homework and studying is doing right by my family. Having the opportunity to make them proud is what really motivates me. Last song you’re listening to when you step off the bus before a game? Oh man…I listen to a lot. Crazytown by Jason Aldean. What’s your favorite venue to play in besides Williams-Brice Stadium?
What’s your favorite…
My favorite place to play this past season was at Auburn. Their stadium is kind of set up like ours, and their fans are pretty good (but not as good as ours). That place was just electric the night we played them.
Book: The Old Man and the Sea Movie: Saving Private Ryan Video Game: Destiny and FIFA
What’s more nerve racking—taking the field on game day or taking the field at the library?
What’s the best part about participating in Pigskin Poets? …the same way an athlete can inspire a young child to play a sport, I think we can also use that to inspire them in education, reading and growing as an individual.
I guess the first time, it’s more nerve racking to go to Pigskin Poets. You just don’t know what to expect. Whereas with football your coaches have trained you for hours and hours on end as to what to expect in a game situation. With kids anything can happen. What’s your most memorable moment on the field?
Was there anyone in your life who inspired a love of reading or learning? I had a third grade teacher named Miss Taylor at Lake Murray Elementary School. Growing up I struggled with math and she really inspired me to learn and drove my passion behind it. She was the first teacher I had that equated sports to education—especially math. Speaking of learning, are you learning any new plays or formations this summer? You know the Head Ball Coach always likes to pepper some stuff in. Right now I’m really focusing on knowing the basics and knowing our scheme as best as possible.
Meet Mason at Pigskin Poets 3 p.m., July 24 Carolina Volleyball Center 1051 Blossom St., Columbia
Well, anytime you beat Clemson. One of the most memorable times in my career was when we played Missouri and went into double overtime. The guys just really fought it out and toughed it out and our coaches did a heck of a job putting us in a great position to succeed in that game. What two things that have nothing to do with football do you like to do? Off the field I like to stay active. I’m an outdoorsman. I do everything outdoors—fishing, hunting— anything of that nature. I also recently picked up golf. Golf? So just how far can a 6’9" offensive tackle drive a golf ball? If I can get a hold of it—that’s the big thing, actually hitting the ball—I think the furthest I’ve hit was about 315 or 317 yards. JULY | AUGUST 5

During the event, beer lovers sampled regional brews, while tasting some of the best local food and listening to the lively sounds of The Whatever Band. Also on tap, the Columbia Brew Bus made a stop during the event, and beer expert and author Daniel Hartis held a book signing for his latest book, Beer Lover’s The Carolinas.
