from the director
Dear Readers, The word “college” is as popular as the word “carpool” in my house these days. With a 10th grader who thinks she wants to be an architect or a dramaturge (It’s a real career. Look it up. I had to.), a four or more year stint at an affordable (please) university is in our family’s very near future. I have no doubt that her interest in both of these careers was fostered by her early experiences and out of school activities. She’s been in theatre classes since she was four and has been drawing her dream home since she could hold a pencil. We’ve encouraged her interest in theatre and art on our own time— and dime—with classes, tickets to plays and trips to museums. I asked her recently how she felt school was preparing her for either of these potential careers and her reply was confirmation. “I get everything I need outside of school.” As her parent, I know that’s not entirely accurate, but exchange the word “love” for the word “need” and I agree completely. As the library director, I find myself working with extraordinarily smart educators, policy makers and progressive business leaders working to change the future of public education. Transform SC, an initiative of New Carolina, is paying keen attention to the critical connection between K-12 education, the workforce and the economy. Their vision for student-centered learning is exciting. They know it will take some radical change to create a new model of education that celebrates and encourages the talents and passions of youth and translates those into marketable careers. They understand that not every child needs to go to a four-year college to do something that makes them happy and generates a nice paycheck. As a parent, transforming the public school system so it can adequately prepare all three of our children to be happy and successful citizens seems daunting. They learn differently and have different strengths, talents and styles of communication. In my experience, the system is not as student or family-centered as it should be. Parents who can’t leave work in the middle of the day to attend meetings with teachers or counselors may be labeled disengaged. Children who thrive when they can use their whole body to learn and understand concepts suffer when they are made to sit still for most of the day. And teens, like mine, who want to spend hours writing a play or making a movie have no support in a “block schedule” to dive that deeply into any topic. They need adults in their lives who are willing and able to make those opportunities happen outside of the school day. Full disclosure here: two of our three children go to public school. The third goes to an amazing school that specializes in children with learning differences. She recently told me that she felt like if she went to a different school, she’d be “lost and distracted because there were too many other kids in the room.” At nine years old, she’s already an insightful advocate for her own learning. In seventh grade, my eldest child was given an assignment to design the ideal classroom. She did a masterful job of creating a lightfilled space where tables and chairs were arranged in groups for collaboration. Where large doors slid open to an outdoor patio for group work or classes. A wall of materials could be used by any student to create projects or art. Each student was encouraged to use their devices to manage and create their work. And the teacher interacted with her students as a collaborator. Each day, I'm thankful that my husband and I can create opportunities to optimize learning for our children. And each day, I wish my daughter's 7th grade vision and the vision of Transform SC—for a new model of student learning—was available for every child.

Laurie Brownell McIntosh is a graduate of the University of South Carolina where she majored in Studio Art. A professional graphic designer since 1986, she is also the Creative Director of Brownell McIntosh Graphic Design in Columbia, South Carolina. In the August 13, 2014 issue of The Wall Street Journal, Personal Technology Columnist and Columbia native, Geoffrey Fowler, took a look at how San Francisco Public Library and Richland Library’s e-book collections stacked up against e-book subscription services. What he found was that “e-book subscription services don’t always have the big-name e-books available at some public libraries…[and] the rise of paid subscription services is proof that there’s demand for what libraries can offer in our Internet era.”

Nord Family Foundation Donation The Nord Family Foundation has made a generous $100,000 donation to fund a Learning Center at Richland Library Blythewood. The Learning Center will be a hybrid of two existing services that are offered on a more limited basis within the Richland Library system – job centers and homework centers. By day, the Learning Center will provide the highest level of services to adult learners and job seekers. The Center will be equipped to offer training in areas such as resume writing, interviewing and computer skills in an effort to develop a competent, skilled cadre of workers. By afternoon and evening, the Learning Center will transform into a dedicated environment focused on homework support and technology training for students. The Richland Library Foundation has embarked upon a major gifts campaign to fund Learning Centers in seven library locations.

Community Conversations at Ballentine In September, Ballentine residents came together to discuss plans for the new 15,000 square foot Richland Library Ballentine.
Let your voice be heard! Attend a future Community Conversation:
Customers at the three Community Conversations agreed that they value their inclusive, diverse community; the area’s emphasis on nature, creative arts and crafts; and a comfortable, laid-back environment.
• Noon, Tuesday, December 4 • 6 p.m., Thursday, December 4
Their needs for a future library include spaces that connect the indoors with the outdoors; tutor/group study rooms; a large meeting room or performance space; and a dedicated children’s area. They would also like to see an emphasis placed on local art, and more bicycle and pedestrian access.
