from the director

Dear Readers, The routes I usually take to pick up my kids after school are forever changed. My commute through one of the loveliest neighborhoods in our city is now strewn with peoples’ belongings and houses stripped to the studs. The clean-up activity is constant; a steady stream of wheelbarrows hauling comforts and securities to the curb. Even weeks after the flooding, the shock of seeing these homes destroyed is still overwhelming. And this is just one street. I know there is much more damage to homes and businesses that my children and I will not experience as intimately. In the rural parts of our county, where investment in infrastructure was not as high and the elevation of the land even lower, the damage was vast and yet unseen by many. It’s hard to imagine how families already living in precarious financial situations will be able to come back from this devastation. Libraries from Baton Rouge to Nashville, Oklahoma and California all reached out to us during the flood. No stranger to natural disasters, these library colleagues were a tremendous source of information and confirmation that our instincts, to eschew the idea that libraries are amenities and not necessities—especially in times of crisis—were confirmed. Forty-eight hours after the worst of the flooding, we opened our doors—providing shelter, electricity and internet access where we could. But what strikes me most is the outpouring of staff who volunteered to take library services to those who needed them most. From delivering water to remote parts of the county where residents couldn’t get out of their neighborhoods to visiting shelters to provide books, toys, computer access and hopefully distractions to displaced neighbors. Before FEMA could contact us, we were in touch with city and county officials, letting them know that we were ready to be FEMA disaster recovery sites. We also did what librarians do best; posted accurate, timely info on our website and kept the community informed on social media. And because we opened when schools could not, one superintendent urged families to “Keep reading and visit Richland Library." While the future is still uncertain for many, the resilience and determination of our state is clear. Our libraries will continue to be just as important moving communities forward as they were in those first days of October.

"While the future is still uncertain for many, the resilience and determination of our state is clear. Our libraries will continue to be just as important moving communities forward as they were in those first days of October. "

Richland Library staff are some of the most caring, flexible and committed people I know. We expect to be an important partner in getting residents back on their feet and we’ll do that work in whatever way the community requires of us. Warmly—

Featured Staff Amanda Chapman Librarian, Richland Library St. Andrews What are you most thankful for? I am most thankful for my family. I cherish each day with them and I am grateful for every minute I get to be a part of their lives. Describe life at the library in three words or less. Adventurous. Friendly. Fun. If you could trade places with one person for the day, dead or alive, who would it be? I would trade places with someone who owns a beautiful beach house in Hawaii. A day in paradise? Yes, please! Why did you choose to work in a library? I chose to work in a library because I wanted to surround myself with stories, and because I wanted to bring people and books together. A Christmas Story, Die Hard 2 or Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas? You must have forgotten to include The Santa Clause with Tim Allen, because that would be my pick! It makes me laugh every year. Happy Holidays!

support your library First Citizens Invests in Future of Local Teens Thanks to a $20,000 grant from the First Citizens Foundation, Richland Library’s Teen Center spent the last year helping Midlands’ youth prepare for a successful future. Focused on giving teens increased access to books about careers, college and finance, the grant also helped support teen programming, guest speakers, and participation incentives. “We are tremendously grateful for the support we have received from First Citizens,” said Christina Fuller-Gregory, Teen Services Librarian. “Their commitment has enabled us to actively support Richland County’s teens with the resources needed to reach their goals, both present and future.” More than 250 teens and their families attended 15 grant-funded programs at Richland Library Cooper, Main, Southeast and St. Andrews. Below are a few of the highlights: Shark Tank: Teen Edition enabled youth to learn how to develop a business plan and pitch a moneymaking idea. Participant Terrence Weeks shared, “Shark Tank will be a building block for my future profession.” My Teen’s Going to College, Now What?! reached out to teens and their families, navigating them through the higher education process and pinpointing how to successfully transition adolescents from high school to college. Dr. Jim Overton, director of College Consultants, was invited to facilitate the event. Within Reach: Arts and Communications Career Fair guided teens through the decision to choose a career path. It connected them with professionals in a variety of fields, so teens could become more familiar and have their questions answered. Looking ahead, Richland Library’s Teen Center will utilize First Citizens grant funds to put a spin on the successful Within Reach program—introducing teens to food-based careers like culinary arts, agri-business and nutrition.
