Total Solar Eclipse On Monday, August 21, Columbia will see the east coast's longest total solar eclipse, experiencing 2 minutes and 36 seconds of darkness in the middle of the afternoon. Columbia is the third largest U.S. city on the center line of the "path of totality" (the complete coverage of the sun by the moon). When totality occurs, the sky darkens, the temperature drops, stars appear, the sky produces spectacular visual effects and the sun’s corona blazes into view. PARTIAL ECLIPSE |

GLASSES ON

Starts: 1:13 p.m. The eclipse begins when the sun's disk is partially blocked by the moon.

Eye Safety It's NEVER safe to look directly at the sun, except when the sun is completely blocked during the period of total eclipse known as totality.

BAILY'S BEADS |

Eclipse Glasses

DIAMOND RING |

These are not normal sunglasses! Pick up a pair at your library or check with local science museums, schools and astronomy clubs for eclipse glasses, or purchase an ISO 12312-2 compliant and CE certified pair of these special shades. #14 arc-welder's glasses can also be used.

The last of the sunlight streaming through the moon's valleys creates a single, bright flash of light on the side of the moon. This is known as the diamond ring effect, and it marks the last few seconds before totality begins.

TOTALITY |

Pinhole Projectors Take two pieces of cardboard or thick paper. Put a pinhole in one (taking care to make a small, neat hole). Then, stand with your back to the sun and let the sun’s light fall through the hole and onto the other sheet. You’ll get a small but distinct image of the sun. A compass and leveler are important tools for telescope setup and use. These apps will help you level your telescope mount and position the scope facing North.

GLASSES ON

A crescent will begin to grow on the opposite side of the sun from where the Baily's Beads shone at the beginning. The crescent is the lower atmosphere of the sun, beginning to peek out from behind the moon and it is your signal to stop looking directly at the eclipse. Make sure you have your safety glasses back on—or are otherwise watching the eclipse through a safe, indirect method—before the first flash of sunlight appears around the edges of the moon.

GLASSES OFF

Once the diamond ring disappears and the moon completely covers the entire disk of the sun, you may safely look at the eclipse without a solar filter. Be careful to protect your eyes again before the end of totality.

GLASSES ON

As totality approaches, only the low-lying valleys on the moon's edge allow sunlight through, forming bright spots of light called Baily's Beads.

This fun quiz app offers two free quizzes to prepare you for this year’s Total Solar Eclipse. The quizzes are fun and challenging and you can take them as many times as you’d like and test your friends and family members!

If you want to go to a dark site to observe the sky, you will want to bring a red flashlight. Red light does not ruin your night vision, leaving your eyes adjusted to the dark for maximum star viewing power. This goes for your phone as well: if you want to use any of these apps, you will want to install a red light filter on your phone.
