Do you have a young child? Read, Sing, Talk, Play and Write Help Your Young Child Develop Essential Early Literacy Skills Beginning at birth, children learn language and pre-reading skills through literacy rich interactions with caring adults. Take time each day to read, sing, talk, play and write with your young child to help develop the early literacy skills needed to be successful in school.
Read books every day. Share bedtime stories and come to the library for storytime! Sing nursery rhymes and favorite songs in the car. Clapping to the rhythm helps children begin to identify the syllables in words. Talk and listen to your child. Extend conversations by repeating what they say and introducing new words. Play outside, play make-believe and be silly. Let your child’s imagination run wild! Write, scribble with crayons and draw in the sand. Scribbles will turn into letters, and letters into words.
4
Do you have a rising third grader? Third grade is a pivotal time for young readers because at this time they switch from learning to read to reading to learn. Try these tips to help your soon-to-be third grader build framework, establish important brain connections and gain reading fluency over the summer.
Read together and encourage your child to read independently. Visit the library to explore books on topics that pique your child’s interests. Listen to audiobooks during those long summer road trips. Ear-reading is essential to building comprehension, vocabulary and even increasing reading fluency. Ask questions. It’s important for children to summarize stories or chapters in a few key sentences and make predictions on upcoming events in a story. Practice root words, prefixes and suffixes, and use them to help children learn spelling and language patterns and decode unfamiliar words. Write or journal every day. Writing about things that interest them helps establish a routine, encourages them to try new words, and check for spelling, punctuation or capitalization errors.
Need help? Visit the Richland Library Education Studio at Main for guidance or more ideas to help support your child’s reading success.
