Rip Woods: Creating Magic

Jan. 9-March 30, Civic Center Public Gallery

Roosevelt “Rip” Woods inspired other artists to further their explorations, and now he will be honored for all that he’s done through this new exhibition. Woods was wellknown during his long art career, and he was committed to creating exhibition opportunities for Black artists. His work, on display alongside pieces by some of his past students and friends, is mysterious and symbolic, often referring to historic African masks and rituals. He also taught graduate and undergraduate painting and drawing for 27 years at Arizona State University. www. scottsdalepublicart.org.

Disney on Ice Presents Road Trip Adventures

Gold Palette Artwalk

Taking place primarily along Main Street and Marshall Way, this artistic endeavor will showcase works from the members of the Scottsdale Gallery Association, allowing guests to wander through the different styles of art at their own pace while enjoying the statues and fountains dotting the area. Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon

Jan. 14-15, Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe

What better way to kick off a new year than with a little exercise? The streets of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe will be taken over by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, featuring a marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K and a kid-friendly course. Live bands will be stationed throughout the course every other mile playing music alongside cheering spectators. Winter Art on the Boardwalk

Peruse art by talented local and regional artisans in the beautiful winter weather. The event will showcase fine arts, crafts, home decor, and specialty gift items. Zoo Move & Groove 5K

Nonprofit Phoenix Zoo’s annual 5K race will return this month, kicking off the new year with a little movement and a whole lot of giving back. Racers will receive a commemorative T-shirt, admission into ZooLights immediately following the race, Dinosaurs in the Desert, raffle tickets, kettle corn and cocoa, samples for guest’s tasting pleasure. From robust reds to light and crisp whites and rosés, all varietals will be present. Food trucks will provide small bites for an additional charge. 6th Annual Doggie Street Festival

The Doggie Street Festival is both a pet celebration — friendly dogs are welcome — and adopt-a-thon, meaning it’s the perfect event for pet owners and animal lovers alike! 12th Annual Balloon Classic

Light the fires, fill ‘em up and let’s take off! The 2020 Arizona Balloon Classic is one of the Phoenix metropolitan area’s most must-see spectacular event. The sky will be filled with colorful hot air balloons as over 20,000 attendees look on in wonder. Attendees can walk on the field and see firsthand as the balloons inflate and lift off. Hope Blooms Brunch

Local nonprofit Live & Learn will host a fundraiser to raise money for low-income single moms next month. With a deadline of Jan. 27 to RSVP, this is one to put on the calendar a little early. The heartwarming event, which will take place at JW Marriot Scottsdale Camelback Inn, will be emceed by Channel 3’s Arizona’s Family Meteorologist Ian Schwartz.
