HER STYLE
FASHIONABLE FROM WITHIN
Creating stunning looks is second nature for photographer Shelley Wolfe Franklin
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Award-winning fine art portrait photographer Shelley Wolfe Franklin rocks a bold style behind the lens. “My style is definitely feminine but never girly,” she says. Due to the nature of her career, Franklin moves around a lot, making comfort a top priority for her wardrobe. To achieve this goal while still creating a polished look, Franklin often throws on a blazer over Commando leggings and a T-shirt. In the evening, Franklin’s ensembles still carry a feminine vibe with an edgy flair. She incorporates leather or faux leather for their alluring appeal and always chooses a dress over a skirt. “For dresses, nothing beats the way Retrofete fits the curves of a woman’s body,” she says. Though Franklin once turned to others for style inspiration, she now looks inward and trusts her instincts when deciding what to wear. “As I near 50 years old I’m happy to say I don’t feel influenced by anyone else’s style, which hasn’t always been the case,” Franklin says. “Now I wear what I feel good in and choose my clothing based upon my own daily activities and current mood.”
What are your favorite colors to wear? Currently I’m loving pops of color. Anything blush looks great with my hair color and I really enjoy wearing jewel tones.
Has the pandemic affected your style at all? It did for almost a year. I think I went a full year without wearing heels! My feet were not prepared for the shock of them after that, but in spite of the initial blisters, I love to wear heels even though they make me well over 6 feet tall.
How do you transition your look from day to night? My go-to items are simple, knee-length Michael Stars dresses. They are fitted but forgiving with a bit of ruching on the sides. They look great with flats for work, but I can throw a heel on and accessorize to go out and are just formfitted enough they look professional but a little bit sultry!

THE DREAM TEAM
Aisha Marshall and Des Dickerson, co-founders of Creative Label, are on a mission to support brands and educate the community
The story of how the masterminds behind digital consulting agency Creative Label met has been told to death – with plenty of additions and revisions on both sides. The setting: a lecture hall at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The characters: Des Dickerson, a bored college student with dreams of becoming a reporter, and Aisha Marshall, a recent transfer to ASU, who, as Dickerson jokingly (and lovingly) says, was friendless and a little bit nosy. “For Black people – and I’m sure it’s true for every other minority – you walk into a room in higher education and are usually the only Black person,” Marshall says. “But anytime there was another Black person in class, I would sit next to them. I didn’t know them, but it felt like we were the same in a room of people who didn’t look like us.” So, in one of her classes at ASU, Marshall gravitated to the only other Black woman in the lecture hall. “She was always on her computer. We’d been in class for a few weeks, and occasionally I’d look over
and think, ‘Oh, this girl’s on Facebook again,’” says Marshall, who realized one day that she recognized one of the photo albums the woman was scrolling through. “It was a costume party of me and my friends at San Francisco State, which I attended before transferring to ASU. I was dressed as a giraffe, so it was easily recognizable. So I asked, ‘Hey, how do you know them?’ And she looked at me like, ‘What are you doing on my computer?’” “Anytime Aisha tells the story, take the exaggeration back three steps,” Dickerson says. “From my perspective, I literally thought she was stalking me! Why was this girl being so nosy?” But Dickerson, who went to high school in California with the people in the photos – and felt she needed to be welcoming to the transfer student who didn’t know anyone at her new school – invited Marshall to a party she was throwing that night, and the rest is history. “It sounds cliche, but we were inseparable after that,” Dickerson says. “We meshed right away – I don’t remember that she ever went home.”
FINDING FULFILLMENT
After graduation, Marshall and Dickerson pursued separate career paths. After a college internship with the Dr. Phil show, Dickerson began a stint in TV production, eventually working as an associate producer for multiple shows on HGTV and Lifetime. Marshall, on the other hand, decided to pursue a Juris Doctor. “Law school really helped my stamina and taught me how to be both right and left brain,” Marshall says. “But I realized that while I enjoyed it, it wasn’t a passion of mine. It became a battle between being good at something and doing something that fills your cup.” Dickerson, exhausted from her career in production, found herself in a similar position. “Aisha was feeling unfulfilled in her legal life, not knowing what to do but knowing she wanted to be in the creative space, and I really wanted to own something of my own. If I’m going to work 90 hours a week, I would rather work for myself than somebody else.” This thought led to the formation of a small business on Etsy, selling custom Snapchat geofilters for events like baby showers and weddings. They handled every aspect for their customers, from designing the filter to getting it live, making little to no profit while they both balanced demanding work schedules and, in Marshall’s case, law school. From monitoring the exponential growth of the social media industry, they knew that custom experiences like the one they provided were here to stay. When Marshall graduated from ASU’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, the pair expanded their business model to include social media management and haven’t looked back. Over nearly five years, Creative Label (www.itscreativelabel.com) has evolved into a full-service digital consulting agency specializing in branding, public relations and marketing. The Creative Label team prioritizes problem-solving, accountability and over-communication to create compelling original content that brings each client’s dream to life.
EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER
Today, Dickerson helms Creative Label as the vice president of public relations and digital marketing alongside Marshall, the vice president of branding and digital marketing. While Marshall’s legal background helps the team bridge the gap between idea and execution, Dickerson’s production experience, especially at CBS, prepared her to build strong relationships with clients and partners. “It made me unafraid to go after things for fear of being told no,” she says. “If they do, it doesn’t mean no forever, it just means not right now. We’d heard no for a long time, but it’s never stopped us from constantly going after everything we want.” And it’s this propensity to dream big that helped Marshall and Dickerson earn one of their biggest achievements to date – a spot on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. But the journey hasn’t all been smooth sailing. “When we first started, people were super stingy with information,” Dickerson says. “We had to do a lot of research and a lot of teaching ourselves. Because of that, we made a commitment to always give back and educate our community.” One way they make good on their promise is through their podcast, The Label. Each weekly episode provides updates on the world of digital media, from recent news to expert advice on everything from Instagram stories and multilevel marketing to creating clear, concise and consistent branding. “Our mission has always been to give value. Des and I ascribe to an abundance philosophy, that you get what you give. For us, it has poured back into us tenfold,” Marshall says. “And people love our banter, but this is not just a show, it’s every day between the two of us.” Marshall and Dickerson’s podcast also serves as a safe space for their predominantly white audience and clientele to ask questions about how to support others in a time when people are opening their eyes to a variety of injustices and microaggressions. Past discussions include how to be an ally in the workplace, how to support creatives of color and how to frame your message as a white person wanting to help the Black community. “We talk in length about how companies can show up and take action, as well as what kind of diversity efforts they should be running,” Marshall says. “Inclusivity does bring more money into your business, but it’s not just to check a box off – it’s to be more representative of the world.” At the end of the day, Creative Label is more than just a company – it’s a testament to the power of tireless work, communication and a friendship that will always triumph over any obstacles in its path. “I’ve never had a relationship like I have with Des,” Marshall says. “We’re like sisters – we’ve had toxic habits, fought tooth and nail and then gone to our favorite lunch place five minutes later. It took a lot of time and hard conversations to get to where we are today, but there’s always going to be hard conversations – that’s part of growing. If you throw it away every time, you’ll never become your best self.”

Aesthetics & Hormones for the Executive Woman
Aging gracefully is an art, and Dr. Alexandra Mayer has the tools and expertise to help her patients achieve rejuvenated, naturallooking, youthful skin. Dr. Alexandra Mayer is a Naturopathic Physician with a specialty in Medical Aesthetics and Women’s Hormones. Her love for healthy, glowing skin and all things aesthetics stem from her personal experiences growing up. She draws inspiration from her aunt, who owned a high-end spa based in Canada and showed her how to best care for her skin. In 2014, Dr. Mayer received her Naturopathic Medical Degree from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. She co-founded Ethos Integrative Medicine in 2015 to bring patients quality, integrative care that balances immediate improvement with long term results, and gets patients feeling great in their skin and great in their overall health. The best treatment plan is tailored to help her patients achieve their aesthetic goals while getting their hormones balanced and energy back so they can “confidently perform well at work, meet their personal goals, and level up in their life!” With her “skin-first approach” in mind, she provides treatments for skin laxity, wrinkles, acne, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and hair loss. Botox injections are a popular treatment for patients looking to erase fine lines, correct undesirable facial movement, and achieve smooth skin. Dr. Mayer understands that a little goes a long way, so she strives to maintain the face’s natural movement. For patients looking to lift, tone, and tackle the core of aging, RF Microneedling is a great option! Dr. Mayer calls it the ultimate skin-tightening treatment that boosts collagen and elastin production and targets skin laxity, deep wrinkles, and unwanted scarring: “Our patients LOVE it because there’s virtually zero downtime and it results in brighter, tighter, and firmer skin.” A treatment would not be complete without a solid skincare regimen to maintain that rejuvenated, natural glow. This year, Dr. Mayer launched her own exclusive Ethos Skincare line: “My patients know that I’m the pickiest person when it comes to skincare, so they trust me to curate quality products that get them lasting results.” The line’s HA Mineral Defense sunscreen continues to sell out as soon as it’s restocked! If you’re looking for a fantastic lightweight sunscreen that’ll protect the skin from the Arizona summer sun, you can stop by Ethos to pick one up. As cheesy as it may sound, Dr. Mayer says that her patients inspire her to keep striving in what she does as a doctor and businesswoman: “I love that I have so many badass female patients who run their own businesses and show up as their authentic selves.” Her passion for helping patients inspired her to launch her own YouTube Channel: Dr. Alexandra Mayer. Her goal is to educate women on health, hormones, and aesthetics, and empower them to be their best selves.

UGLOW
Krista Kutac specializes in delivering dramatic results
After opening 31 medspas (and overseeing nearly 100) in the last 16 years, across the country for national companies, Krista Kutac took the plunge and opened her own luxury medspa, UGlow, in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. “We’re proud to be a local, women-owned and operated business!” she says. With over 16 years of experience in the aesthetics industry, Kutac is proud to provide unique treatments that deliver glowing results that no other practice in Scottsdale can match. Clients visit UGlow with a wide range of skin concerns. Many are interested in anti-aging technology and permanent fat loss or body contouring. Kutac and her team offer exclusive treatments that deliver dramatic, youthful results for patients of every skin type and nearly every skin concern. Different than many med spas in Arizona, UGlow offers medical grade PRP (Platelet-Rich-Plasma) treatments. Unlike test tube PRP, which often has a platelet count too low to provide significant results, medical grade PRP has a higher platelet count which regenerates tissue, increases collagen production, and increases cell turnover. The regenerative properties in PRP make it a naturally, highly effective treatment to reverse the signs of aging and as well as stimulate hair growth. UGlow has also recently been recognized as a Center of Excellence by InMode, a leading provider of innovative and award winning technologies, UGlow is the only facility to achieve such recognition in Arizona. UGlow recently added stem cell hair restoration (for both men and women) as well as Morpheus8 radio-frequency microneedling. Their other services include laser resurfacing, Botox, fillers, non-surgical facelifts, custom infusion facials and chemical peels. In the near future, UGlow will offer a uniquely advanced awake-liposuction procedure to permanently get rid of unwanted fat and performed by a board-certified surgeon. According to Kutac, experience was the best teacher she could ask for. “It taught me what people truly want as well as which technologies work and which don’t,” she says. To remain a leading med spa, Kutac only invests in the most cutting-edge technology and highest quality equipment. As a small business owner, she is passionate about entrepreneurship and carving out her own path in life. Opening medspas for large companies across the country meant more time travelling and less time with family. During the pandemic, she realized just how much the road warrior life was taking her away from her children. So, she and her business partner opened UGlow with one focus: providing real results for real people. Establishing her own practice also allows her to spend more time with her two children and dedicate time to some of her favorite charities including Child Help, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing and treating child abuse.

Treating skin is our specialty
For Briggette DeRienzo, providing premium aesthetic treatments is a family affair. De Rienzo is the owner of North Scottsdale Laser and Skin Care, a full service medspa offering a wide range of services including Botox, fillers, facials, Coolsculpting, laser treatments, and more. With an emphasis on creating incredible skin, De Rienzo settles for nothing short of the best medical grade skin care, such as SkinMedica and ZO by Zein Obagi. One of the things that sets North Scottsdale Laser and Skin Care apart is the team’s understanding of how the Covid19 Pandemic has negatively impacted many people’s self-image. “Everyone is so much more aware of how they look thanks to Zoom calls,” De Rienzo says. De Rienzo has always valued patient input, and shares that “We’re in the business of making people feel more confident in their own skin and want to give that feeling to as many people as possible!” Besides the variety of treatment options, DeRienzo believes that her customer service sets her brand apart. She wants every client to feel like part of the North Scottsdale Laser and Skin Care Clinic family and calling it a family isn’t figurative. DeRienzo’s daughter, Nicole, is a licensed medical aesthetician and laser technician and serves as the clinic’s in-home Coolsculpting expert. Not only is she her mother’s right hand, but she also keeps the practice up to date with innovative, fresh ideas and a new perspective. DeRienzo considers the rest of the team at North Scottsdale Laser and Skin Care her family as well. With their Medical Director Dr. Jessica Anderson, Naturopathic injectors Dr. Robert Ruiz and Dr. Sandra Olic, 1 doctor that specializes in hormones and the rest of the team, DeRienzo has herself an unstoppable team with over 150 years of combined experience. In 2021, the clinic is focusing on additional body sculpting services with a brand new Coolsculpting Elite machine. DeRienzo remains dedicated to her community with close ties to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and The Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Twice a year, she facilitates a clothing and canned food drive and offers discounted pricing on Botox for patients who donate food or clothes to St. Vincent de Paul. All of DeRienzo’s hard work has paid off and she has been at the helm of getting the clinic recognized as an Allergen Top 250 Volume Customer in the United States. In the near future, DeRienzo looks forward to some in-office renovations (patients aren’t the only ones refreshing their Zoom Face), and finally in-person events again. Business is her passion, but DeRienzo couldn’t have done it without family support, drive, education, and faith.

CUTTING EDGE AESTHETICS
Nicolle Goyle focuses on making clients feel their best
Nicolle Goyle discovered her passion for aesthetic services early on and became a licensed cosmetologist in 2007. After working alongside her mom at her family’s salon for more than 9 years, Goyle pivoted her focus and now specializes in regenerative aesthetics and permanent makeup while simultaneously holding certifications in PRP microneedling and hydrafacials. Her husband Dr. Ashu Goyle is a double board-certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain specialist. Nicolle and her husband opened their clinic Integrated Pain, Spine, and Wellness for those seeking medical treatments, aesthetic procedures, or both under one roof. The purpose of regenerative treatments is to heal tissue and restore functions that have been lost due to aging, something the Goyle’s are passionate about. Their patients range in age and typically visit Pain, Spine, and Wellness for skin concerns and individualized plans to help them look and feel their best. “We created our Regenerative Aesthetics portion of the practice, to help men and women not only feel great but also look their best,” Nicolle says. By offering PRP (platelet-rich plasma) skincare treatments including hydrafacials, and permanent makeup including microblading, powdered brows, powdered eyeliner, and lip blush, she is able to ensure patients have an overall sense of well-being. One of the most in demand services include hydrafacials- a monthly maintenance treatment that reduces brown spots, shrinks pores, and leaves skin bright and clean. This treatment is also great for anyone suffering with acne. Another popular service is Skin Needling with PRP thanks to the transformation it can make in the appearance of your skin. “We want people to be able to feel their best after seeing us,” Nicolle says. She and her husband consider the clinic their home away from home; and her patients are her extended family. Because patients are members of the family, Goyle and her husband are highly selective about the products they keep on hand. The duo does extensive research before bringing in products, after all, Nicolle firmly believes that “our body is our temple, and that we must nurture and nourish it.” Drawing inspiration from other entrepreneurial women, Nicole credits Marie Forleo’s NYT bestselling book Everything is Figureoutable. The book helped her realize that no goal is truly out of reach and that anything is attainable. In her spare time, Nicolle is dedicated to her food blog @nikkisgreattastes. Here she focuses on providing clean, organic, gourmet recipes that followers and patients can create in their own kitchens. In the near future, she sees herself offering free recipes to clients so they can maintain a healthy lifestyle. “Food is thy medicine,” she says.

CURV BODY LOUNGE
Jennifer Hall speaks your body language
Located in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, CURV Body Lounge is an innovative body contouring center unlike anything Arizona residents have seen before. Since opening in April 2021, the team at CURV has blended European and South American techniques to create their own CURV method and at the helm is Jennifer Hall, a local entrepreneur and seasoned veteran in the cosmetic surgery industry for more than 20 years. Growing up, Jennifer was surrounded by male entrepreneurs including her brother Dr. William Hall, Infini Cosmetic Associates, a prominent valley cosmetic surgeon and always found gratification in helping people. Armed with determination and ambition, Jennifer combined her experience and expertise to create CURV Body Lounge. Here she offers treatments that focus on obtaining optimal health for anyone looking to detox their lymphatic system. “CURV is not a med spa, we are a boutique body lounge that invites clients to come in and stay awhile,” Jennifer says. Using advanced technology and techniques mastered by licensed professionals, treatments at CURV help clients achieve ideal levels of confidence and body bliss. Whether you are in the recovery stages post-surgery or are looking to decrease bloat and increase energy- the services at CURV drive out toxins and smooth, strengthen and tighten your skin. With the support of numerous surgeons in the valley, CURV was established to bridge the gap in quality post op care and recovery. Since CURV is a concierge style facility, clients receive top tier service in a beautiful clean environment. Some clients visit CURV after surgery or pregnancy to combat swelling and some clients are simply looking to feel lighter and refreshed in their everyday life or before or after a special event or vacation. Every service at CURV encourages a healthy lymph flow through a series of specific strokes and patterns along the lymphatic system, which in turn reduces swelling and purges the body of harmful bacteria. The most popular treatment? The 60 minute Body Contouring Detox + Sculpt, a body contouring technique that stimulates your lymphatic system and drives out toxins, giving your body a chance to release lymph while cinching your waist line. Another popular option is the Pre/Post Op Lymphatic Drainage where the specialized pre and post-operative lymphatic drainage technique helps remove excess fluids, reduce scar tissue and decreases swelling. A few benefits for CURV’s post surgery patients include faster healing and regained mobility. “Seeing people that are moving slower a few days after surgery and watching them gain mobility rapidly is inspiring,” Jennifer says. She often assists and fits post op clients with their second stage garments. Typically, CURV clients visit a few times per week or month and take advantage of the multi service discounted packages offered and Jennifer recommends regular sessions to prevent the lymphatic system from becoming overloaded.

ARIZONA SUNSHINE COMES WITH A WARNING: PROTECT YOUR SKIN
The summer days begin sooner and end later here in the Valley of the Sun, and that means it’s even more important to protect your skin. While many travel – or even move – to Arizona because of the abundant sunshine, it’s important to remember the hazards of exposure to excessive ultraviolet radiation.
“While many skin cancers may be easily treatable, some like melanoma that are caused by sunburns can be deadly and there is no amount of skin damage that is safe,” says Samuel Ejadi, MD, Chief of Medical Oncology at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), Phoenix. “Tanning occurs after the skin is damaged. Protection from skin damage caused by excessive ultraviolet radiation in sunshine that can lead to premature wrinkling and skin cancer is vital for everyone. While those with darker skin may not get a sunburn from overexposure, that does not mean their skin is not being damaged just the same as someone with fair skin.”
With nearly 3.5 million cases diagnosed each year, skin cancer remains the most common cancer in the United States, and government officials estimate that one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer in their lifetime. The good news is that skin cancer is largely preventable and reducing your risk of sun damage is easier than you might think. Here are some tips to help protect your skin this summer, or any time of the year: • Avoid the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Don’t be fooled by cloudy days. The Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that up to 80 percent of the sun’s damaging UV rays can penetrate the clouds.
• Follow the shadow rule and teach it to your kids. If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun’s rays are at their strongest, and it’s time to seek shade. • Wear protective clothing. Tightly woven fabric that you can’t see through when you put it up to the light provide the best sun protection. Wide brim hats protect sensitive areas like the back of the neck.
• Get sunglasses with UV protection that absorb up to 99 percent or 100 percent of UV rays. • Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily on sun exposed skin, even when you’re running errands or driving around town. This will protect skin against both UVA and UVB rays. When planning outdoor activities, be sure to apply generous amounts to
your face and body—and lip balm. And reapply throughout the day, especially after sports or water activities. • Need a reminder on when you’ve had too much sun? There are a number of wearable gadgets—from UV-measuring wristbands to smartphone apps that draw data from sun patches on your skin— that alert you when it’s time to reapply the sunscreen or get out of the sun. • Avoid tanning beds. • Examine your skin from head to toe once a month and go to the doctor if you notice any irregularities. Be sure to enlist a loved one or hairdresser to help examine those hard to see places like your scalp or behind your ears. • See your dermatologist once a year for professional full-body skin exams.
Whatever you do, the key is to avoid excessive ultraviolet radiation as much as possible. Your genetics and UV light are the main factors linked to squamous cell carcinomas and melanomas of the skin, and likely the majority of basal cell carcinomas.
