Welcome to 13th Best of Richmond Eve Edmonds EEDMONDS@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
It’s been a tough year, but like a lot of tough times, that’s when we see what we’re made of. This year’s “Best of Richmond” shows us this community is indeed made of the right stuff. When the pandemic hit, it hit Richmond faster and harder than most B.C. communities. Even before it was declared a pandemic, the coronavirus (as we called it then) had all but wiped out Richmond’s Chinese New Year celebrations, leaving local restaurants virtually empty at a time when they usually had lineups around the block. But while the “devastation,” as Nancy Small, CEO of Tourism Richmond, called it, was real, so was the resiliency and innovation the community answered with. Our “Best of Richmond” celebrates that spirit. Here, for the 13th year in a row, we recognize businesses and organizations our
readers have voted to be the best in their respective class. The lists may confirm what you already know, or it may introduce you to something new. Have a read through, and learn about some of the top eateries, fitness facilities and services in our community. Read a little further and you’ll see how different sectors pivoted to accommodate the various health regulations in a bid to keep themselves afloat and the rest of us safe. But as more people get vaccinate, case counts go down and health restrictions ease, we see a light at the end of the tunnel. Finally, we can begin to let ourselves think about the first things we’ll do when the pandemic is over. For some it’s visiting family, for others it’s going to a baseball game. Speaking of baseball, throughout the section you’ll see baseball cards featuring pictures of Richmond News staff telling what they most look forward to doing once it’s safe to do so. This is our way of looking forward with hope and enthusiasm to the best of things yet to come.

Businesses, tourism adapt to pandemic Kirsten Clarke KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Border closures, public health restrictions and the loss of foot traffic and travellers have all had major impacts on Richmond’s business and tourism sectors, according to the city’s business leaders. “This year has been difficult for everybody. But it’s hard to say that everybody is suffering in the same way. Because of some of the significant shifts people have made in their business models, there have been some upsides to it,” said Carolyn Robertson, vice-chair of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce. Pivoting to e-commerce, or shifting to a work-from-home model are just a couple of examples of how local businesses have coped. And many of those new ways of doing things could stick around even after the pandemic is over, said Robertson. “I’ve heard from many who say, you know, this has actually
helped us to look at things in a different way.”
here — turning residents into tourists in their own city.
According to a December 2020 report from the City of Richmond, construction, manufacturing, transportation and warehousing are some of the sectors that have been hardest hit.
It’s something she considers an upside to the pandemic. For example, she said, the Fairmont YVR began offering picnic kits including bike rentals to explore Richmond, as well as a Mexico-themed stay at the hotel.
However, there are also businesses that have experienced “significant growth and development,” said city spokesperson Clay Adams, such as Paper Excellence expanding into the U.S., and Corvus Energy expanding its Richmond battery manufacturing facility. “The successes of these large businesses will inevitably benefit the community as a whole through added jobs and increased levels of innovation and capital investment,” he said. Other businesses, said Robertson, pivoted in response to the pandemic — such as events company Scene Ideas, which became a custom manufacturer of Plexiglas barriers and PPE, and London Drugs which

Stores in Steveston are among the many local businesses which have had to adapt to survive. opened shelf space to struggling local businesses. “It’s amazing what businesses have done in a difficult time to keep their employees on, to find new ways of creating revenue opportunities,” she said. The tourism industry has also had to rethink its entire approach to marketing and devel-
oping destinations, said Nancy Small, CEO of Tourism Richmond, With about 60 per cent of the city’s tourism base traditionally coming from international travel, Tourism Richmond has had to create new programs, focusing on promoting restaurants and attractions to those who live
“And I think that’s been really, really exciting. I don’t see that going away even as we welcome regional, domestic and international visitors.” Robertson, meanwhile, hopes the focus on supporting local businesses will remain throughout the pandemic recovery. “That’s a really important part — that we support our local service providers, retailers, restaurants in our community. “In the end, we all have a common goal and we all have a part to play in it…in supporting each other in that recovery.”

Restaurants work against all odds: Kung Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Some restaurants switched to outdoor dining during COVID. Nono Shen photo
Be it fresh fish on the docks in Steveston or dim sum in the Golden Triangle, Richmond has been a food mecca for decades now. So, when the pandemic became a reality, the city was hit hard. As early as January 2020, large Chinese restaurants, most of which had already stocked up for huge Chinese New Year crowds, sat empty. By February, many had closed their doors — some temporarily, others for good. “Many restaurants have found themselves stuck in survival mode in both 2020 and 2021,” said William Tse, director of BC Asian Restaurant Café Owners Association. “Some are trying their best to hang in there, but others had no choice but to lay off workers to cover their rents and other expenses after seeing
a significant drop in revenue.”
ary, Tse added.
Tse added that some of his group’s member restaurants have closed permanently or changed ownership since the pandemic hit the province.
“Many restaurants had to use the revenue they earned from previous years to keep their doors open.”
Chinese restaurants began struggling earlier than others, said Tse, because much of their Chinese clientele were already aware of what was happening in Wuhan, China, and knew how quickly the virus could spread. They could see the dangers of large gatherings and began avoiding restaurants last Janu-
Small food courts run by families seem to be doing well for now, but many of the large Chinese restaurants that used to hold banquets have had to close their doors for good because their revenue from foot traffic just isn’t enough to cover their monthly costs, Tse explained. But where there have been challenges, there has been even
more innovation and resiliency, said Rae Kung, managing director of the Chinese Restaurant Awards.
Small said you can already see the impact of the city’s patio program.
“Many restaurants have launched online ordering apps or have collaborated with thirdparty delivery services; some have even taken a step further by organizing free delivery within a certain number of kilometres,” said Kung.
“I was in Steveston (recently) and I was at a restaurant on the beautiful patio they’ve created there. It was right in the parking spots, which would have been unheard of a couple of years ago. So, I think what you’re seeing is some real ingenuity and creativity.”
More recently, a rash of patios have popped up to accommodate the provincial government’s restriction on indoor dining at restaurants and bars.
Tse believes it might take a little longer for Chinese immigrants to get used to the outdoor dining concept, but restaurants are still giving it a try.
“We’ve seen a lot of restaurants do that,” said Nancy Small, CEO of Tourism Richmond, noting that full credit should go to the City of Richmond for expediting the licensing of patio restaurants.
Besides, said Kung, eating from open-air stalls is a popular tradition in Hong Kong, adding he and his friends are “so excited about the outdoor patio program rolling out in Richmond.”
City spokesperson Clay Adams said they have issued more than 21 permits so far, with more than 20 others awaiting review. They have also had around a dozen inquiries from businesses that may or may not lead to further applications.
But regardless of the strategy or innovation, it’s clear, noted Kung, that “restaurants are working hard against all odds to keep food lovers satisfied and happy, even with the dining restrictions in place to help curtail the spread of COVID-19.”

Volunteers step up during time of COVID-19 crisis moment the call was made, according to Hajira Hussain, executive director of the Richmond Food Bank.
Valerie Leung
VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Since March 2020, Richmond residents have delivered food, sent thank-you cards and even paid for coffee for health-care workers to show those who are isolated and working on the frontlines that they are not forgotten. Volunteers with local organizations such as Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG) and the Richmond Food Bank, as well as community Facebook groups, took this as an opportunity to fill the big shoes to keep everyone connected. Ed Gavsie, president of RCRG, said this past year has highlighted the importance of volunteerism. “Volunteers (help) improve lives, change lives and sometimes even save lives,” said Gavsie, adding RCRG continued to serve and support the community’s most vulnerable residents by transitioning to “virtual roles” during this challenging time. “Even while staying apart, people still
“Volunteers are the backbone of our organization as well as many other nonprofits in Richmond,” she said, adding they have “amplified their spirit of giving” to bring a sense of normalcy during the pandemic.
Dave Elvis is one of many volunteers helping out at the Richmond Food Bank.
Richmond’s community was thrown into disarray when the pandemic hit, but volunteers in the city stepped up to keep seniors and those in need connected.
“It’s amazing to see how beautifully our volunteers have adapted and responded to the change in our food bank operations.”

The food bank serves more than 1,800 people each week in Richmond alone, and the number is still climbing. want to get involved in their community and there are many ways to do so virtually.” For example, volunteers with RCRG have been connecting with isolated seniors over the phone as well as by video calls to make sure they are doing well. And these volunteers take it “upon themselves to help their neighbours in need” on their own time as well. While RCRG hosts the city’s largest volunteer opportunity database, there is always a need for more volunteers, said Gavsie.
“They contribute to all areas of our community, sharing their skills, talents, passion and enthusiasm so that Richmond can continue to grow and thrive. We rely on volunteers, and they deserve our utmost gratitude.” Meanwhile, Richmond’s local food bank has not only seen a rise in volunteers helping out at their depots, but also youth and families have been donating what they can to help those in need of food. From non-perishable food items to plastic bags for hampers, the Richmond Food Bank received items from residents the
Many non-profits and organizations were able to switch to a virtual platform. However, the food bank was not able to. Instead, they had to cut the number of volunteers down to a maximum of 20 people at a time in order to work safely in a socially distanced environment with some even working more shifts than they originally volunteered for. “I’m truly honoured to be working with these people and their spirit of giving,” said Hussain. Gyms, city, groups step up for wellness was the constantly changing environment.
selves, it’s extremely important,” said Tristan Kolver, a fitness advocate who works at a local gym.
Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Suffice it to say, the pandemic hasn’t been easy on any of us — physically, mentally or socially. Last year, community centres and private gyms were shut down to stop the spread of COVID-19, and when they were allowed to re-open months later, they quickly had to “pivot.” Major adjustments had to be made at these facilities to ensure health and safety. This meant carefully following regulations from the provincial health officer, for example, moving equipment around to ensure physical distancing and turning off the showers. Health authorities have said there’s a definite correlation between fitness and mental health. “I think that in the time of a global health crisis and a global isolation, when we have a facility where people can come together and connect and better them-
Some city activities moved online — something the world was quickly getting accustomed to.
However, he acknowledges, for some a gym feels safer than for others, and it’s up to each individual to decide on their comfort zone.
Doors Open Richmond attracted 22,000 visitors to its 37 virtual locations and the virtual Maritime Festival drew a “crowd” of 50,000.
“Some people feel, at this point, safety and health means staying at home, some people feel health and safety means coming to a facility,” Kolver said.
The city opened its long-awaited aquatic facility at the Minoru Centre for Active Living during the pandemic, and now, with its limited capacity, is generally always sold out.
Fight or flight It was fight or flight for the Community Mental Wellness Association of Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic, explained executive director Ahlay Chin, and they chose to fight. As people were told to physically distance and stay at home more, the number of isolated Richmond residents just grew. “These are turbulent times, this pandemic, we saw people in despair, they were frightened, they were depressed, they were anxious — how could we do something with everything going on?”
Staff at Cambie Community Centre help clients stay in shape. Maria Rantanen photo Chin said. So the association ramped up their services and reached out to those needing mental health support. One big support was their Wednesday evening group called Heart to Heart — it alternates between English and Mandarin.
Another project was getting tablets to seniors so they could connect virtually. City pivots Richmond city staff also recognized the importance of recreation to physical and mental wellbeing. The biggest challenge, though,
During COVID-19, there has been a “significant increase” in the use of parks, trails and walking routes, according to the city. The new seniors centre at the Minoru Centre for Active Living, meanwhile, has remained closed. To stay connected with isolated seniors, city staff and members of the Minoru Seniors Society picked up the phone to check on them, connecting with about 4,000 seniors in the early days of the pandemic.
