WELCOME TO THE DIAMOND Dear Flying Squirrels Family, Welcome back. It’s hard to believe that 2017 is the eighth season of Flying Squirrels Baseball. Time flies when you’re having FUNN here on the Boulevard. Over the course of the first seven seasons our ownership group, staff and management have been devoted to making your Squirrels experience both unique and memorable. I am proud of these award-winning efforts, and even prouder that we have become not only the hometown team, but an important part of the fabric of the RVA community 365 days a year. Nutzy, Nutasha, and our staff have worked tirelessly to deliver a 12 month a year impactful existence in the RVA. The connection we have all forged together is special and simply amazing. Thank you!

We continue to be committed more than ever to being your team for generations to come. There has never been more of a coordinated, cooperated and collegial effort to create a new home for the Squirrels in a way that will serve not only our fans and organization, but the betterment of the entire Greater Richmond area. We are dedicated to the Greater Richmond community and to being a major part of its future. We love being one of the many great things the Richmond region has to offer to residents and visitors alike. We are also very appreciative of our long term relationship with our major league affiliate, the San Francisco Giants, who we mutually extended our partnership with through the 2020 season. Our first four-year agreement with the Giants last year speaks to their faith in the Flying Squirrels organization and their confidence that we will resolve the ballpark situation with our hometown.

Our own Richmond Flying Squirrels are starting their 8th season here at the Diamond and we’re all rooting for the home team, their new Skipper and the pursuit of the 2017 Eastern League championship.

We all know Minor League Baseball is family-friendly, affordable and fun, but a Squirrels game is something truly special. RVA fans enjoy the best contests, the best theme nights and the most awesome mascot duo in the league, Nutzy and Nutasha.

Fans 14 and under can join the Squirrel Tails Kids Club for free and get on the field before and after every Sunday game to play catch and run the bases just like the pros.

Squirrels players were all over the 2016 Major League Baseball postseason, and we know this year will be no exception. The Diamond is where you will see baseball’s top prospects and MLB stars of tomorrow.

FEATURE STORY HAINES continued from page 11 “I always thought I was probably going to be done at the start of the next year, but then I would talk myself into playing more because I knew that when I was done playing there was no going back; there is no second-guessing it,” Haines said. “…My very last year playing, I knew that was it. I knew there was no changing my mind on that one, and I knew that when the season was over, I would end up pursuing some opportunities, either in coaching or somewhere else.”

Haines transitioned from player to manager the following season, taking over the independent Frontier Greys. A year later, the Giants offered him an opportunity to return to the organization that drafted him.

out a “more intense side” of him.

“I’m definitely more intense than most in the dugout,” Haines said. “I don’t ever feel like I’m going to go to sleep over there. I definitely need to calm down the amount of coffee I drink before the game so I don’t get too worked up.”

Haines has sought advice from his older brother Andy, a former minor league manager now a minor league hitting coordinator with the Chicago Cubs, as well as Giants farm director Shane Turner, with whom he originally discussed coaching during his playing career.

Above all, though, Haines’ focus is on his players.

“It’s just about helping players,” Haines said. “It’s just about putting them in positions to succeed and helping them grow as people on and off the field.”

Kyle Haines replaces Miguel Ojeda as the sixth manager in Flying Squirrels franchise history. At 34 years old, he is also the youngest skipper in team history.

Haines spent the previous two seasons as the manager of the Class A Short-Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in the Northwest League. The Louisville, Ill., native piloted the Volcanoes to a 3937 record in his first season in 2015 and a 32-42 record last year. He became the first former Volcanoes player to manage the club, having started his playing career with Salem-Keizer in 2004.

During his Giants minor league career, Haines played alongside the likes of Tim Lincecum, Sergio Romo, Pablo Sandoval, Jonathan Sanchez and Travis Ishikawa. The infielder was a member of four championship teams in the minor leagues: the 2004 Arizona

Rookie League Giants, 2005 San Jose Giants, 2007 San Jose Giants and 2009 Akron Aeros. Haines notched a go-ahead RBI single for San Jose in Game 5 of the 2007 California League Championship series.

In 2008, Haines enjoyed his best statistical season and made the All-Star Game in the Double-A Eastern League as a shortstop with the Connecticut Defenders.

The Eastern Illinois University product began his managing career immediately after his playing career ended, guiding the Frontier League (IND) Greys in 2014.

Haines is the youngest of three siblings. His older brother Andy has also managed in affiliated baseball with the Miami Marlins organization and currently works as a minor league hitting coordinator for the Chicago Cubs.

Steve Kline returns for his third season as the Flying Squirrels pitching coach after guiding the club to top-two finishes in the Eastern League in team ERA in his first two seasons – including a franchise-best 3.12 ERA in 2015.

An eighth-round selection by the Cleveland Indians in the 1993 draft, Kline finished off his long and established major league career in 2007 as a lefty reliever with the San Francisco Giants.

He appeared in 796 big league games

during his 11-year career, which included stints with the Indians, Montreal Expos, St. Louis Cardinals, Baltimore Orioles and Giants.

The University of West Virginia product set a single-season record for appearances (89) in 2001 while with the Cardinals and led the National League in appearances three consecutive seasons (1999-2001). He was a member of three playoff teams in St. Louis including the ‘04 NL champions.

HOW TO SCORE A GAME Keep score throughout the game on pages 18 and 19. Fans may already have their own way of scoring, but here is a basic outline: Starting Lineup & Position Numbers Fill in the starting lineup. Starting lineups can be found in the Elephant Insurance Fan Zone posted behind home plate. Each position is assigned a number. These numbers will be used when you record fielding plays • Pitcher - 1 • Second Base - 4 • Left Field - 7 • Catcher - 2 • Third Base - 5 • Center Field - 8 • First Base - 3 • Shortstop - 6 • Right Field - 9 • Designated hitter- DH Scoring Plays Once each batter is finished with his at-bat, fill in what happened in the appropriate inning column next to that player’s name. Shorthand for plays are listed to the right. Here are examples of how to score certain plays: • Ground Out: The third baseman fields the ball and throws to first base for the out. That would be scored as 5-3.

• Fly Out: The batter hits a fly out to the left fielder. That would be scored as F-7.

Shorthand • Strikeout: Simply write a K if the batter 1B Single strikes out. If the batter strikes out looking (not swinging), then a backward K 2B Double K is used to score.

3B Triple • Single: If the batter hits a single, act as if there is a diamond shape in the HR Home Run scoring box (example below) and draw a BB Walk line to first base. Simply write 1B in the corner. You will use this diamond pattern K Strikeout to chart each runner’s path around the

Unlike his younger brother, Dylan did not have the opportunity to play professionally. Recently engaged, he now lives and works in Greenville, S.C. Even though Dylan is “not a man of many words,” according to Hunter, he typically knows the right thing to say at the appropriate time.

“He knows when it’s right to talk about (baseball) and when it’s right to talk about other things and have a little small talk,” Cole said.

Cole said his older brother never let much get to him on the mound or in the batter’s box and never really showed any emotion. Hunter, meanwhile, is the opposite.

“If I could draw some of that from him, that would help me stay even-keeled,” Cole said. “I just watch and learn from him.”

After a slow start to the season offensively — similar to what Cole experienced last year — he knows patience, along with hard work, is key.

“If you get too emotional or let things kind of take control, like whether you go 0-for-4 or 4-for-4, then it’s going to catch up with you,” Cole said. “You’ve got to treat every day like it is Opening Day, for the most part, or every time you go up to the plate, you’re 0-for-0.

“If you can do that, then I think your mindset is in a pretty good place and you can be more consistent day in and day out.”

In not so many words, his brother would likely agree.

FLYING SQUIRRELS CHARITIES

E

stablished in 2013, the mission of Flying Squirrels Charities is to partner and connect the Flying Squirrels brand with the greater Richmond community through fun and versatile fundraising campaigns that benefit youth in the city of Richmond.

The initial focus of the franchise’s charitable arm has been deemed “Renovating Richmond’s Recreation” — an impactful community campaign designed to provide recreational opportunities for youth in the city of Richmond.

Sixteen youth baseball facilities in Richmond were identified to be in the greatest need of renovation.

Work began in April 2015 on two fields at both Hotchkiss and Westover parks.

Four new dugouts were installed including benches and concrete flooring.

In June 2015, Flying Squirrels Charities partnered with Barton Malow, a construction company, to oversee project management of field renovations. Additionally,

Richmond International Raceway, through a partnership with the Henrico Career & Technical Education, donated bleacher seats which students retrofitted to use for the field projects.

Work on the fields at Hotchkiss and Westover parks was completed in September 2015, and a more extensive renovation project at Blackwell Field began the following summer.

The first phase of the Blackwell Field (pictured left) project involved replacing the dugouts and was followed by a complete resurfacing of the infield.

A similar renovation project at Bellemeade Field began in September 2016, making it the sixth facility to receive support from Flying Squirrels Charities.

All proceeds from the Flying Squirrels’ annual Hot Stove Banquet benefit Flying Squirrels Charities, as do funds raised through the Flying Squirrels’ annual Turn Left Golf Classic held each fall, and Nutzy’s Rotary FUNN Run, which takes place in December.

FREE SHIRT FRIDAYS

obert Ullman has always had an affinity for going to a baseball game and coming home with a souvenir.

“I love going to the ballpark and getting something for free,” Ullman said. “It has always been one of my favorite things ever since I was a little kid.”

When the Flying Squirrels introduced their “Free Shirt Friday” promotion in 2015, the concept caught Ullman’s attention; however, it wasn’t just because of the free T-shirts.

The local graphic artist, who has worked as a freelance illustrator for numerous local and national publications and clients such as Richmond Magazine, Virginia Living, DKPittsburghSports.com, HarperCollins, Boing Boing, the U.S. Army and the American Red Cross, wanted to be part of the team’s T-shirt design process, too.

“I decided I was going to bug them and bug them and bug them until they let me do something,” Ullman said.

Ullman’s persistence was rewarded this offseason when the Double-A franchise tabbed him to create all 11 of its Free Shirt Friday designs for the 2017 season.

“I wasn’t expecting all 11, but it’s awesome and I’m happy to do it,” Ullman said.

The team provided Ullman with nine themes – among them “Cinco de Mayo,” “Nutzy and Nutasha,” “Irish Heritage,” “Yacht Rock,” “Augtoberfest” and the popular “Boulevard to the Bay” series – and a few basic ideas.

The rest was up to Ullman.

The mostly self-taught artist dove into the creative process, which initially started as red-lined pencil sketches in his notebook.

While the first conversations between Ullman and the Flying Squirrels took place

in October, the majority of the design work occurred during a six-week span from early January to mid-February.

The aggressive timeline culminated in an unveiling event Feb. 24 in the Marble Hall at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Ullman and his daughter Evie removed the red cloth covering the final design unveiled during the event.

As a beer enthusiast, the Augtoberfest design, which was patterned after a beer label, was one of Ullman’s favorites, as was the Yacht Rock tank top design.

“How can you not love the tank top for Yacht Rock night,” Ullman said. “That’s going to be a lot of fun.”

However, it was the Boulevard to the Bay series of which Ullman said he was particularly fond.

“It’s more of a blank slate, especially having three of them” Ullman said. “You can do something really fun.”

MAJOR LEAGUE ALL-STARS Brandon Crawford and Joe Panik (pictured below) became the first former Flying Squirrels to earn All-Star selections when both were named to the 2015 National League All-Star team by San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy. It was the first All- Star appearance for both players, who also both won Gold Gloves last season.

Adam Duvall, who was traded by the Giants to the Cincinnati Reds in 2015, made his first career All-Star team last season. In his first full season in the major leagues, Duvall smashed 33 home runs and drove in 103 runs.

Joining Duvall on the 2016 NL All-Star squad was the Giants’ Brandon Belt, who tallied a careerbest 82 RBIs last season.

MAJOR LEAGUE REHABS On July 30, 2013, right-handed pitcher Ryan Vogelsong became the first member of the San Francisco Giants to appear in a game for the Flying Squirrels on a major league rehab assignment.

Vogelsong, recovering from a broken hand, scattered five hits over five scoreless innings to earn the victory over the Portland Sea Dogs.

Former National League All-Star Matt Cain (pictured below), returning from an elbow injury, made a rehab appearance at The Diamond on June 9, 2015, allowing two runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Last season, right-hander Josh Osich became the first former Flying Squirrel to return to the team on major league rehab, making two relief appearances.

FLYING SQUIRRELS ON THE AIR JAY BURNHAM - DIRECTOR OF BROADCASTING Jay Burnham enters his fifth season in the Flying Squirrels broadcast booth and his 15th in MiLB. He also broadcasts William & Mary football as well as VCU and Longwood basketball. A native of Shelburne Falls, Mass., Burnham was the recipient of the prestigious 2011 Minor League Broadcaster of the Year award issued by Ballpark Digest, a renowned industry publication. This past season he was also recognized by Baseball America as the “Minor’s Best Broadcasting Prospect.”

SAM RAVECH - RADIO/TV BROADCASTER Sam Ravech enters his first year with the Flying Squirrels and his first as a professional broadcaster. The Connecticut native graduated from Pepperdine University with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism and media production. Ravech was the lead play-by-play broadcaster for Pepperdine basketball and baseball all four years of college. He also joined his father Karl Ravech and John Kruk in the broadcast booth for parts of the Little League World Series coverage on ESPN.
