Paul Calandra says he has done nothing wrong. The two-term MP for Oak Ridges-Markham is being accused in a national publication of accepting money at fundraising parties in Markham and Richmond Hill earlier this year that involved people attempting to secure a new Toronto radio station licence. The MP is also parliamentary secretary to the Canadian Heritage Minister, which oversees the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, the body that is reviewing bids for the FM station. “I’m not too worried about it,” Mr. Calandra told York Region Media in a telephone interview from Minden yesterday afternoon. “I attended two fundraisers, we took in money, followed all the rules we were supposed to with Elections Canada,” he said. The value of the donations is more than $20,000. However, according to the MP, the money was not accepted by him, but by the electoral district association. None of the money in question has been returned, he said, noting they have until the end of the fiscal year, December, to report contributions. “We continue to do research. If a cheque or donation shouldn’t have been made ... we will return any funds that are inappropriate,” he said. Returning contribution money is nothing new for the MP. As Larry Jeffers rhymes off the veggies growing in his garden, it sounds like his back yard could double for a supermarket produce section. Carrots, beets, potatoes, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, garlic, lettuce, cabbage, even corn grow in the back yard of his Don Head Village Boulevard home. “I grow a bit of everything,” said the green-thumbed resident who has grown vegetables in his back 40 since he moved to Richmond Hill 28 years ago. You can visit Mr. Jeffers’ garden and seven others in town this Saturday, as part of the Richmond Hill Garden and Horticultural Society’s edible gardens learning tour. With a $10 ticket, you can admire the gardens, ask questions of the owners and view styles of gardening that could inspire your own vegetable garden. As a preview, Mr. Jeffers shared some of his know-how and some of his gardening struggles. While the dry and hot summer has caused havoc for crops of large scale farmers, Mr. Jeffers said he’s been able to push through an arid July thanks to his water barrels. York house values take biggest leap in GTA The average sale price for a house in York Region increased by 28 per cent during the last four years — the highest increase in the GTA — according to a report published by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation this week. Richmond Hill resident Josh Binstock and Team Canada beach volleyball partner Martin Reader look to put a damper on the British Olympic party, during their first match Saturday. In that first game of the tournament, the Canadian mens beach volleyball duo will play the host nation in front of what will no doubt be a hostile and raucous home crowd of close to 15,000 Britons cheering on their team. But boos and jeers don’t faze Mr. Binstock. “People are going to be hating on us big time,” said the six-foot five-inch Richmond Hill High School graduate, with a laugh. “But I don’t mind playing the spoiler; it gets me fired up and it’s something we have done before,” he added, referencing a key win over Mexico in that country on the road to Olympic qualifying. Speaking from London Tuesday night, Mr. Binstock can take comfort in a small corner of support inside the historic Horse Guards’ Palace, the beach volleyball event venue. Set to arrive in London soon will be his parents, brother, sister and half a dozen of his best high school buddies to provide a cheering section. The Canadian team is guaranteed to play three group games at the tournament. A draw last weekend sorted the competition’s 24 teams into six pools of four and the Canadian men will also play Team Norway, before their final group match against one of two Brazilian teams. The top two teams from each group will automatically advance to the elimination round, along with the top two third-place group finishers. The remaining four third-place teams will play for the last two playoff spots. The fourth-place finishers are automatically eliminated. According to the Federation of International Volleyball world tour ranking, Binstock/Reader’s first match will go a long way to determine who advances from the group. In that ranking, the Canadian duo is ranked 42nd, while Great Britain is ranked 51st and automatically qualified for the games as host nation, where the other 23 teams played their way into the

tournament. Norway is ranked 24th overall, while the Brazilian team of Cunha/Santos is ranked No. 3 in the world. Mr. Binstock said he was happy with the draw. “We like our chances and we can definitely advance if we play at the top of our game,” he said, adding he played and defeated the British duo in a world tour match last year and this season, he and Mr. Reader lost to the Brazilian team in a close three-setter, in a tourney Brazil went on to win. He has yet to play the Norwegian duo, but said they are a strong team. Arriving in London Saturday night, Mr. Binstock said he’s settled into the athletes’ village and is rooming with a fencer and a gymnast. Aside from training, getting fitted for team gear and dealing with much media interest from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, there hasn’t been much down time for the trained chiropractor. He expects an off-day Thursday, then opening ceremonies Friday will help the magnitude of the Olympic event to sink in before game time. While focused on his own performance, Mr. Binstock said being surrounded by so many great athletes makes him want to take in some other events as a spectator. “I’d like to see my roommates compete and would love to see the dream team (men’s USA basketball) play,” acknowledged the basketball fan. “The athletes village is pretty cool. There’s no media allowed and we are so insulated. I was walking around today and standing with some of the guys on the Brazilian basketball team like (former Toronto Raptor Leandro) Barbosa and (Washington Wizards forward) Nene. That stuff is awesome.”

With the Olympics just days away, The Liberal asked resident if they plan to watch any of the Olympic Games and if so, which event they are most anticipating. Of the 15 people to respond at or near Hillcrest Mall, nine said they plan to watch the games, while six said they have little to no interest. Some residents including Richmond Hill resident Dennis Dimopolous, are quite excited to watch.

He added that the staple event of the games, he won’t miss, is the men’s 100 metre final. Even though Frank Mashinter admits he won’t watch the majority of the games, he also said the 100m final will probably be the one event he makes a point to watch. “I can’t say I’m all that interested in the games as a whole. It’s too bad they got rid of baseball and softball. I would watch those or even lacrosse,” said the Richmond Hill resident, making a case for lacrosse to be added as a future event. “It’s such a fast paced and exciting sport. Even if you don’t know the intricacies of the game, it’s an exhilarating spectator event,” he added.

You can reverse sad stat We’re continually bombarded by statistics, but here’s a sad stat that you can do something to change. According to the Canadian Blood Services, Central Ontario region, 60 per cent of donors who make appointments to give blood during the summer months don’t honour those appointments. They may forget, may stay longer at the cottage than they plan, or even miss a flight home from a trip or fall ill unexpectedly. For whatever reason, they don’t show up. So at permanent blood clinics such as the one at Hillcrest Mall, only 40 per cent of those people who make an appointment with nurses and medical staff to give blood actually follow through. Donation cots are sitting empty, staff are being paid to do nothing. Here’s where you come in. You can become one of more than 4,300 donors critically needed to give blood between now and Aug. 6, in order to keep hospitals in the GTA supplied with the stuff of life. We all know that with more people on the roads during the holiday season, there are more accidents and thus more

LETTER TO EDITOR It’s the age of discontent I’m tired of people wasting our hardearned money. Income taxes, sales taxes, corporate taxes, excise tax, property tax, estate taxes. Where does it end? Taxes are being wasted by our politicians. We, the taxpayers, have no voice in how our money is being spent. In Richmond Hill we deal with hospital name changes. Then they have the nerve to ask for donations. Councillor Carmen Perrelli is suing us, wasting our money. Green spaces being raped to build condominiums. The list goes on and on. No politician is listening! They must read The Liberal? Don’t our elected politicians see what is happening? I am so tired of governments on all three levels making expensive decisions, laying off people because we are so in debt. The people who should be laid off are the senators, old people holding cushy jobs and don’t show up [for work]. In the end we have to pay even more taxes and or get less services because of shortages in money — mismanagement everywhere. We are in an age of discontent.

Great man made his mark on town It was a who’s who of Richmond Hill who came out to honour a pillar of Richmond Hill United Church — and indeed, a pillar of the town. Or, as Mayor Dave Barrow described him during his tribute to Walter Samuel Cook, “He was one of our founding fathers.” Last Friday morning a celebration of the life of Sam Cook was held at the downtown church, filled to the brim with friends and family. He died July 16 at age 88, but not before having a profound influence on the political, infrastructure, health care and communications spheres of this town. By communications, I refer to his long and distinguished service to Richmond Hill as reporter, then editor, general manager and publisher of this very newspaper, The Liberal. Born and raised in Ottawa, he came to Richmond Hill in 1951 with his wife, then Betty Smith. She was the daughter of Liberal editor and publisher John Eachern “Jack” Smith, and it wasn’t long before Sam Cook joined the newspaper staff. Rising through various positions in

Marney Beck the newsroom, he was the voice of the community through the growth years of the 1950s, the 1960s and until 1975, when he left The Liberal and his position as publisher. As chairman of the York Central Hospital board of trustees, he and then Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Pauline McGibbon officially opened the $14-million Langstaff wing of our hospital. He served more than 40 years as chairman of the Richmond Hill Hydro Commission, an incredible giving of time, energy and expertise in itself.

He always had a keen interest in his community and local history. When I was a rookie editor in the 1980s, he sent me several passionate, thoughtful letters to the editor on the hot topics of the day. Many of those who spoke at his funeral mentioned the numerous positive attributes exhibited by Sam Cook in his everyday life: his entrepreneurial spirit, his dedication, his volunteerism, his compassion. In a small but interesting twist, in a letter to the editor I received this week on a totally separate subject, a letter writer told me as an aside that when she was a high school student in the 1960s, Sam Cook offered her the opportunity to write a weekly column for high school sports. “I remember him as gentle and helpful.” Perhaps his three daughters and numerous grandchildren would agree that that is what we all admired the most — his evident humanity in all that he touched. A great man has left us, but not before leaving his impressive mark on this town.

An Ontario lawyer said this week he is planning to challenge the constitutionality of TD bank account closures affecting Iranian-Canadian customers. The bank has closed the accounts of some ex-pats in a bid to comply with new government sanctions forbidding Canadian financial institutions from providing financial services to anyone in Iran or for the benefit of Iran. The sanctions are intended to hamper the Iranian governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nuclear program and to protest the regimeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s record on human rights. The move left many Iranian-Canadians scrambling to make alternative arrangements and complaining that they were unfairly targeted. Emir Crowne, an associate professor with the faculty of law at the University of Windsor, said he intends to represent affected individuals by challenging the constitutionality of the regulations in federal court. He said Monday he hopes to have something filed with the appropriate court or tribunal by the end of next week. The Iranian Canadian Congress, meanwhile, has discussed the issue with TD officials and plans to investigate the possibility of holding public forums to explain the situation to members of the community. Some ex-pats have called the bank move racist and a witch hunt, organizing a Facebook site and petition calling for the boycott and denouncement of TD Canada Trust. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If TD wants to stop the flow of money to

Canada by Iranian officials or people connected to the government of Iran there are better ways to do so without penalizing many innocent people,â&#x20AC;? Thornhillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sia Mansouri wrote on the online petition. Best-selling author and Aurora resident Marina Nemat, who was born in Tehran and spent more than two years in a political prison there, announced on Facebook that she has pulled her money from TD and asked followers to do the same, saying that while she supports sanctions against Iran, â&#x20AC;&#x153;closing peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bank accounts only because of the place of their birth is against the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and destroys innocent lives.â&#x20AC;? Richmond Hill resident Saeed Soltanpour said he is considering organizing a class-action lawsuit, saying that while he is against money laundering (by the Iranian regime), the Canadian government should meet with members of the Iranian community to work out a solution that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t impact innocent newcomers. â&#x20AC;?We need to have a town hall meeting to tell the community that this is the problem, we have to find the solution, the past is gone, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work together.â&#x20AC;? He accused Richmond Hill MPP Reza Moridi of failing to support the large Iranian ex-pat community in south York Region and described the MPPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s letter to the president and CEO of TD Bank Group â&#x20AC;&#x153;crocodile tearsâ&#x20AC;?. Having vegetarian options at your barbecue isn’t about appeasing those few non-carnivores or having an obligatory “healthy” item; it’s just common sense. No one will look at you askance if you decide to take the easy way out and just get some veggie burgers and veggie dogs to go with their meaty counterparts, but it doesn’t take too much effort to be a bit more creative. “Healthy eating doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice taste,” nutritionist Stephanie Grylls said. “It should taste better.” An important start is knowing your audience. In this day and age, the bigger your party, the more likely there are people who don’t eat meat or have allergies or other dietary restrictions. “I think you should always prepare ahead because you never know,” she said, pointing out more kids, in particular, are vegetarian and parents are learning from them. One sure way to dodge most potential conflicts is to have simple, whole foods, such as fruit or veggie plates. “It can take a lot of the stress out of entertaining,” she said. You can start with basics, such as salads or burgers made with portobello mushrooms. You also won’t go wrong with vegetables either roasted or grilled as a kebab. Of course, you’ll also want to incorporate some protein, so feel free to make that salad with beans, lentils or the wondergrain of the moment, quinoa. Even in the 21st century, there are people unsettled by an innocuous white brick of tofu, but it remains a versatile weapon in your culinary armament. After marinating cubes in a soy sauce, you can stick them on skewers with vegetables and have a tasty, healthy, food-group-spanning meal. Store-made veggie burgers can run the gamut in quality and taste — some being soy-based and more burgerlike, others more like grain-vegetable patties — but you’re likely to come up with something healthier and tastier by doing it yourself. Instead of ground beef, why not show a little love for the protein-rich garbanzo bean by making them out of chick peas? One paradox Ms Grylls noticed is a creative veggie dish invariably attracts the attention of people who suddenly wonder why they’re left eating a plain, old burger or dog. The next thing you know, there’s a run on the lentil salad, so the smart move is to make more than you think you’ll need beforehand. “I always take extra care because I find people are drawn to it ... It’s one of the ironies,” she noted. “Even die-hard carnivores are open to a vegetarian option.”

HONEY GARLIC TOFU KEBABS What you need: 1 package extra firm tofu (preferably organic), drained 1 red pepper 1 red onion 1 cup brown mushrooms 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tbsp honey 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper 2 tbsp olive oil What you do: 1. Drain tofu and cut into one-inch cubes. 2. Mix together soy sauce, ginger, garlic, honey, pepper. 3. Marinate tofu in a refrigerator for a minimum of two hours or overnight. 4. Cut up veggies into one-inch cubes. 5. Put tofu and veggies on skewers in alternating patterns. 6. Brush skewers with oil. 7. Barbecue on medium for 10 to 12 minutes until veggies are tender. Don’t forget that if you use wooden skewers, you should soak them in water first for one hour. Tofu is a pre-cooked product so you can barbecue it to your individual taste. Li hit by stomach bug on eve of Games

Elvis will be back in town Famed Olympic champion figure skater Elvis Stojko will return to Richmond Hill next month. The World Figure Skating champion and former resident will attend a Skate With Elvis Sun Life Family Fun Day Aug. 11. The charity event is taking place at his namesake arena — Elvis Stojko Arena — from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Richmond Hill Sun Life Financial Centre has organized a fun-filled day that will include photograph opportunities with Elvis and an autograph session and a charity hockey game with the youth players of

In the case of Olympian Michelle Li, a stomach virus she incurred last week was far better timing than if it took place when she takes to the court at the Wembley Arena to compete for Canada in the women’s singles and doubles’ badminton competition when the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England commence. Ranked as Canada’s top women’s singles’ badminton player, the 20-year-old Markham resident and former Richmond Hill High School graduate was exposed to a stomach virus while at a preGames training camp in Derby, England July 19. Li wasn’t the only player to take ill. Also inflicted by the virus was Li’s double’s partner Alexandra Bruce of Toronto. Fortunately, Li and Bruce were making their way to a full recovery after being treated by a local doctor and the Canadian Olympic medical team and were expected to return to training early this week, the Canadian Olympic Committee reported. All precautions have been taken to prevent any further spread of the virus. The athletes did not participate in a previously scheduled friendly exhibition match against Great Britain over the weekend. The team will remain in Derby, England to train in preparation for the Olympics and were expected to return to London Tuesday as planned.

spring, Mr. Jeffers collected the early rain water and when it’s dry, he gives his plants a good soak, once a week. Mr. Jeffers advises aspiring vegetable gardeners to practise restraint and not overcrowd your crops. Follow the instructions you get from the gardener or on the seed package and don’t try to stuff too much into your space. “My better half will often see space and want to plant more, but I say no. You crowd the crops and the plants suffer,” said Mr. Jeffers. “It’s important to visualize just how large things will grow and how much space they will require when they are full,” he added. Despite his experience, Mr. Jeffers admits maintaining a successful garden can have a lot to do with luck. For whatever reason, he’s never had any luck with sweet peppers. “It doesn’t matter if it’s in the garden or in a pot — sweet peppers just don’t want to grow for me,” he lamented, though he does have success growing hot peppers. An easy crop to grow and one with which beginners may want to start is tomatoes, said Mr. Jeffers. While his garden hosts stakes so his tomatoes grow upward; the heartiness of the tomato crop means they will even grow as a ground vine. “If it’s a tomato, it’ll grow,” professed Mr. Jeffers. Like most gardeners, Mr. Jeffers has to cope with his share of crop-devouring pests.

In Mr. Jeffers’ case, it’s a local rabbit, whose favourite back yard crops are beets, corn and — of course — carrots. Each year, his garden is visited by the cunning Peter Cottontail and each year the rabbit manages to get past Mr. Jeffers efforts to thwart the vegetable thief. “I placed a small nylon fence around some of the crops, but that didn’t stop him,” explained Mr. Jeffers. “I put up the fence and then went inside to have some brunch. When I came back the rabbit had chewed through the nylon and was sitting in the garden, taking up a whole row of beets,” he laughed. After 10 years of travel on what he’s dubbed the “ribs and road show”, Bernie Gerl admits that the professional rib barbecue circuit is a carnival unto itself. And this carnival — geared to tempt every rib craving carnivore out there — rolls into town this weekend, for the inaugural Richmond Hill Ribfest. Mr. Gerl serves as equal parts event organizer and ribfest competitor, operating the professional ribber outfit known as Camp 31 BBQ. Originating out of Alabama, Mr. Gerl admits that Camp 31 was the first restaurant to bring southern barbecue north of the border, opening a restaurant in Paris, Ont. Mr. Gerl started working at the restaurant 30 years ago and has spent the past decade focused on the rib circuit. Camp 31 will be joined in Richmond Hill by several other professional outfits from across North America, to sell their ribs and compete for bragging rights as each outfit competes for best ribs and best sauce honours. “This is a year-round gig,” explained Mr. Gerl, Monday morning. “In the winter you’ll find us in the south around Florida and in the summer, we truck up to places like you guys and Ottawa. We do more than 30 weekends each year,” added the 47-year-old. The Richmond Hill festival kicks off Friday at Richmond Green, Elgin Mills Road East at Leslie, and runs to late Sunday afternoon. Admission is free.

Get ready for Richmond Hill’s first Ribfest

Organizers are expecting more than 15,000 patrons to attend the town’s three-day event, as rib festivals have gained a large following in recent years. “The ribfest season in southern Ontario is a small window, so there is a core group of people that go to all of them,” said Christine Morgan, town events co-ordinator. “We expect this to be a big draw event and hopefully something that we can continue each year,” she added. Mr. Gerl said he hopes to sell “a truckload of ribs” this weekend and also give residents a sample of the rib tour culture. While they are definitely competitors, the ribbers are like family as many of the same outfits socialize, compete and stay in the same hotels each weekend. “We tend to operate and interact as if we are one big dysfunctional family,” said Mr. Gerl, with a laugh. “We spend a lot of time together, but you want to win so sometimes it can be no holds barred. Bragging rights means everything,” he added. While the ribbers make money from dishing out their pork productions, to the winner of best ribs and sauce will go a trophy and those all-important bragging rights. Some of the larger festivals will sometimes include prize money. One of the best prizes, said Mr. Gerl, is returning to the various towns each summer and continuing friendships made through the festival. “We hoot and holler and chant and cheer. With good food and a good atmosphere it’s

easy to make friends,” said Mr. Gerl. “We even have one lady who comes out each year to the Ottawa festival and volunteers to do our laundry,” he added. Without giving away his rib-making secrets, Ms Gerl said for those amateur ribbers at home, it’s important to make sure you get a nice caramelization on your ribs and ensure your sauce isn’t runny. And for those first-time Ribfest patrons this weekend, it’s wise to simply let your senses guide you. “Don’t be shy. Go up to the grills, check things out and before you commit; sample everyone’s sauce,” said the professional ribber. “Then go with whatever sauces you like

When the Toronto Marlies concluded their 2011-12 American Hockey League campaign by losing to the Norfolk Admirals in the Calder Cup final, Simon Gysbers’ time with the Toronto Maple Leafs’ farm team had expired. But when the puck is dropped to start the 2012-13 season, the 25-year-old Richmond Hill resident and Stouffville Spirit graduate will return with the Maple Leafs’ organization after inking a one-year deal with them Tuesday. The top scoring defenceman with the Marlies last season — five goals and 24 assists in 68 games and a plus-13 rating — Gysbers will earn $600,000 if he makes the National Hockey League, $90,000 with the Marlies. Also compiling one goal and one assist in 17 postseason tilts with the Marlies, the six-foot, four-inch, 200pound defenceman was relieved to know what direction his hockeyplaying future will take “You never know at the end of the year where (the Maple Leafs)

Some of those strides, he said, meant playing with more consistency and providing a little more of a physical presence in his own end of the ice. To that, he was quick to praise what instruction he’s received from Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins and assistant coach Gord Dineen. “Every day they teach and motivate, they’ve been great,” he said. At the same time, Gysbers was quick to thank the Maple Leafs’ organization for being patient with his progress. “They’ve really treated me well. It’s a fantastic organization to be in,” he said. A member of the Spirit for three seasons starting in the 2003-04 campaign, Gysbers said his main goal now is to crack the Maple Leafs’ roster. That is if the NHL can resolve its collective bargaining agreement, which is due to expire Sept. 15. “Hopefully I can play with the Maple Leafs. It’s the goal every year and that’s what I’m working for.”

It is with profound sadness that family and friends part with Russell Charles Urquhart B.Ed, M.Ed. from cancer at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital on Monday, July 23, 2012. Russell is now in the arms of his beloved wife Lucille Reta Urquhart (nee Harvey), who passed away five years ago. Also known as 'Bud', he is brother to Louis, Glen, Hazel and Ivan Urquhart. Left to mourn this independent, humorous, hard-working and protective father, are his children: Roderick Urquhart (Aase), Adrienne Urquhart, Tracy Campbell (Richard) and beloved granddaughters Taryn and Marley Campbell. Russ, a retired public school principal with York County Board of Education, was very active right until his last days. Having served in the Royal Canadian Corps. of Signals, he joined the 16th AAOR and was stationed in both England and Europe during the Second World War. A voracious reader, having read many books about the war, he regaled all around with his spirited storytelling. The family would like to thank the caring staff of CCAC, Mackenzie Health and Veterans Affairs Canada. An informal Celebration of Life for his family to receive friends and relatives will be held Wednesday, August 1st from 2-4 p.m. at The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 385, 105 Industrial Pkwy N. in Aurora, ON.
