Would provincial ban on door-to-door sales work?

Most Richmond Hill councillors aren’t yet ready — despite evident public demand — to call for a ban on election donations from developers. Ward 6 Councillor Godwin Chan, seconded by Ward 5 Councillor Karen Cilevitz, asked their colleagues Monday night to adopt, in principle, a ban on corporate and union donations to candidates in future municipal elections. The motion would be effective in 2018 (the next election year), upon the proclamation of Bill 181, the Municipal Elections Modernization Act. Instead, councillors voted to refer the motion back to staff for further information on the proposed legislation. By voting in favour of a ban, Richmond Hill would have demonstrated leadership in adopting fair, transparent and accountable election finance practices said Chan, who urged adoption of the motion. Several residents spoke in favour of the ban via letters to council and in person at this week’s council meeting, along with a robust conversation on social media. “Perception drives action and that’s where education and transparency can help,” said Iain Switzer, who sent a letter to council in favour of a ban. “We get the government we deserve if we don’t voice our concerns or try to implement management controls, like this motion is intended to do. Rules are really to guide honest people. Crooks will always find another way.” “Voters elect politicians based on trust that they will do as they promised,” said Wilhelm Bleek, another resident who addressed councillors on the topic Monday. “Donations are basically putting the seed of mistrust into the process of trust. Even if you promise … ’money to me from a corporation doesn’t influence my voting’, it gives the appearance and you could say ‘let the province deal with it’ but this is too easy. Make your own decision.” However, a majority of council members, including Mayor Dave Barrow, noted that Richmond Hill has no See ‘LEADERSHIP’, page 7.

CLEAN UP, GREEN UP Hundreds of people embraced the town’s proclaimed Clean up, Green up Week, April 17 to 23 and worked to remove litter and plant trees across Richmond Hill. Ashley Wan and Deanna Kashin (below) eagerly gathered trash, along with 440 volunteers who participated in the Oak Ridges Community Cleanup on Saturday. Crews fanned out all across the community to pick up almost three tons of garbage from parks, public areas and wetlands. Co-organizers Kathrine Mabley and Carey Thorpe reported volunteers also donated 10 bags of food to help fill the pantry of 360Kids.

You should take action if you have ash tree on your property By now, I’m sure you’ve heard of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) and the damage it’s done to urban and forested areas throughout southern Ontario. In Richmond Hill, this invasive insect has attacked and killed thousands of ash trees on public and private property. EAB will likely kill all of the remaining ash trees in town in the next three to five years. If you have one, or suspect you may have one on your property, I encourage you to take action. As of late 2011, when EAB was first discovered here, ash trees were the third most common tree in Richmond Hill — making up approxi-
mately 12 percent of the total tree cover, that’s around 300,000 ash trees. Many of these trees are, or were, on private property around our homes and in our yards. Ash trees on private property are the responsibility of the property owner. It’s important to know that as ash trees decline, they become fragile and therefore, hazardous. If you have an ash tree on your property, you should consult with a professional arborist about management options that will protect your property and your safety. You can find information about how to identify an ash tree, the signs of EAB infestation and guidelines for
Mayor Dave Barrow choosing an arborist at RichmondHill.ca/EAB. If you’re looking for tree replacement options, you can take advantage of subsidized tree planting pro-
grams (while supplies last). Until May 8, Richmond Hill residents can pre-order trees, fruit and flowering shrubs, wildflowers and rain barrels through the Town’s Healthy Yards Program. Mix-and-match a two-tree kit for $10, a five-tree kit for $25, a wildflower kit for $22 (plus tax) or a rain barrel for $45 (including tax). Residents can also purchase trees through our partner, LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests). For $150 to $220, LEAF will provide a 30-minute consultation with an arborist, a five to eight-foottall tree, delivery and full planting service. You can find information
about both of these programs at RichmondHill.ca/HealthyYards. The town is responsible for ash trees on public property. Since 2012, we’ve been implementing a plan to manage the impacts of EAB through a combination of monitoring, pesticide treatment, tree removal and replacement and public education. To date, we’ve removed and replaced thousands of ash trees on streets and in parks and natural areas. The next set of removals and replacements will take place this fall. For updates on ash borer work on public property, visit RichmondHill.ca/EAB

News, or ads disguised as media releases?
Recycling adventure disappointing
M
ost journalists get hundreds of press releases and “advisories” every week and most aren’t relevant to the readership they serve. But some have slick or compelling headlines that just scream out to be read. “Worried work is making you sick? You’re not alone” — is a press release from a company that markets vitamins. The premise of the “news” release — and I use the term news loosely — is that if you’re taking enough of the right vitamins, you’ll feel perky and energetic and be a better worker. How about this one: “Reading glasses make some Canadians feel old, according to survey”. This news release was from one of those laser eye surgery companies, that — not surprisingly — did a survey which found that 26 per cent of Canadians feel old when they wear glasses; and 21 per cent would agree to pack on five more pounds if it meant they could discard their reading glasses. (Huh, is that even a realistic option? How did they pose that question in their survey?) Then there are the news release headlines you have to read several times to figure out what is being suggested. Try this: “Eighty-eight per cent of Canadian minimumwage earners do not live in lowincome households”. This was a serious news column about the pros and cons of raising the minimum wage, stating that because most minimum -wager earners don’t live in lowincome housing, it will do little to reduce poverty. But personally, I found the headline hard to wrap my head around. Try this disguised ad for retirement planning services from a Canadian bank: “What will you do with 2,000 hours a year when you retire?” I loved that one. I sat daydreaming looking out my office window ... let me consider that rather fun question ... hmmm, gardening, window shopping, reading, walk-
Marney Beck ing, communicating with relatives I promise to stay in better touch with every Christmas ... the list is endless. Here’s another release from a different Canadian banking establishment: “Home ownership is a priority for millenials: poll”. Well, duh, of course it is, both my own millenials would love to own their own home, but neither is remotely close to achieving that dream. My daughter rents a rather beatup, drafty house in rural Peel with her boyfriend and two dogs. The two of them are barely making ends meet and putting groceries on the table, never mind saving for a downpayment for a home of their own. My son just turned 24 last week, and instead of looking ahead at life with optimism, he’s worried about an artificial deadline he has imposed on himself. You see, he was hoping that by age 25, he’d have a good career and enough money to move out of his parents’ basement into an apartment or townhouse he’d rent with some friends. Unfortunately, one year away from his great “freedom 25,” he doesn’t see that as a realistic goal. But here’s this week’s fav headline: “Work email is a waste, 9 per cent of the time, execs say”. What company benefits from this survey, you ask? A staffing agency; offering six “tips” to manage your email overload. I’m betting the underlying message of the release is: everyone should hire a secretary or temp person to manage their emails. Any takers out there?
I live in a condo on Yonge north of 16th Avenue and am president of the board of directors. Our board decided to offer a bulk collection of used compact fluorescent bulbs and lighting tubes in our building, as we thought no one would be willing to drive to the recycling centres with one tube or one light bulb. We consulted with our ward councillor, who assured us that we would have no problems in offering this service to our residents. On April 2, my adventure began. I felt we had collected enough of these hazardous items to make my first trip to a regional recycling centre. I drove to the Elgin Mills facility (closest to my condo) where the individuals who met me were very accommodating. They took my bin of light bulbs and, after sorting them, explained they only collect the compact fluorescent bulbs (curly ones), no others, leaving me to take back the rest for disposal in landfill/garbage. So far, so good. When I mentioned I also had fluorescent tubes, I was told they do not collect these because the disposal process is different; I would have to take them to the Markham or Vaughan regional sites. My suggestion: Why doesn’t the Elgin Mills facility collect both and when a sufficient number of tubes has been collected, transfer them to the Markham or Vaughan sites? Isn’t it better than asking residents to drive from one site to another? At any rate, I headed to the Vaughan recycling centre at Rutherford and Jane. There, my adventure
with bureaucracy continued. As soon as the individual heard the word “condo”, I was shown a sign which stated that commercial drop-offs are not accepted. To my shock, I discovered that York Region classifies condos as “commercial” for recycling. Therefore, bulk collections from condos fall into the commercial catagory. I was told the tubes would be accepted this one time; I would have to deal with York Region where the policy was created. Numerous residents in my building suggested that I share my adventure through The Liberal to inform readers that recycling is not an easy process, especially for condominiums. I did phone the Region of York and was told condos are considered commercial. After the person apologized, I asked what we should do with used light bulbs and tubes. The answer was that there is a landfill site not too far from my location. “Happy Earth Day”.

Research shows cell tower dangers Wind Mobile wants to build a giant, 40-meter cellular tower at the southeast corner of Yonge Street and Jefferson Forest Drive. Like the residents in the subdivisions nearby, the town and our elected officials should reject this application outright because it poses serious health risks to the residents. In a German study — The Influence of Being Physically Near to a Cell Phone Transmission Mast on the Incidence of Cancer — published in 2004 after studying about 1,000 patients over a period of 10 years in Naila, it was found that there is a significant
SEND A LETTER: Email your letters to the editor to mbeck@yrmg.com increase of developing cancer for those who live within 400 meters of the transmission tower and at a younger age. This has been confirmed by a study in Israel that was published in the same year in the journal International Journal of Cancer Prevention that eight cases of different cancers were diagnosed among a population of 622 in Netanya within one year in the area near a cell-phone transmitter station, as compared with 31 cases per 10,000 per year in the general population. An earlier study by Dr. Bruce Hocking in Australia found that the rate of leukemia in children living near TV and FM towers (similar to cell towers) in Sydney were two times higher than in children living more than 11 km away. According to another study of the transmitter station of Radio Vatican, the cases of leukaemia is 2.2 times more in children within a radius of 6 km. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer under the World Health Organization in 2011, radio frequency electromagnetic fields are classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans. The proposed tower in Richmond Hill will pose significant health risks to all the residents in the neighbourhood. For this reason and this reason alone, the town should reject the application by Wind Mobile to construct a cellular tower right at our front door and in our back yard.

‘Leadership,’ not ‘grandstanding’ power to enact such a ban yet. “I agree it gives a perception of mistrust, but I don’t believe we have any reason to mistrust anyone on council,” Barrow said. Besides, he added, “whatever we decide now will be on hold until the province gives us the ability to do it.” “When Bill 181 is passed, that’s the most appropriate time,” agreed Ward 4 Councillor David West. Other Ontario municipalities have taken a stand on the issue. Toronto banned such donations in 2009, the City of Ajax asked the province to amend the Municipal Elections Act to allow a ban, and this week Barrie and Kitchener councils supported similar bans. However, Regional Councillor Brenda Hogg said voting for a ban now could be “jumping the gun”. She presented an amendment, that was approved by all but Chan and Cilevitz, to refer the issue back to staff “not because I am unprincipled ... but I believe we should not look at this in a piecemeal way, but in a comprehensive way”. Hogg said that like most councillors, she has accepted donations from developers in the past and some donors have asked her for help in return. “There’s all kinds of people out there who think that if they give you something, that somehow you are beholden to them and those gifts don’t have to come at election time,” she said, pointing to a slew of bribes councillors
face, from dinner invitations to offers of paid accommodation on trips. “There are all kinds of ways of making the most out of this job if that’s where your principles lie,” she said. “If I wanted to make a big change to elections, I would ban all election signs.” That would reduce the amount of money required by candidates in elections, she said. Ward 1 Councillor Greg Beros called the motion by Chan and Cilevitz inappropriate “grandstanding — and that’s embarrassing to see in council when we have so much more important things to do. “Had the province already given us the tools, we would want to be consulting with the public. I have a ton of questions that I’ll have when that time comes.” The motion was not grandstanding, Cilevitz said. “As far as I’m concerned, it is about leadership, about taking a stand as Richmond Hill.” The decision spurred a flurry of comments on social media during the council meeting and the next day, most reflecting residents’ support for the ban. “Perhaps the intent of the motion was to send a message to other municipalities and the province that there is growing support for banning donations,” Mike Bowcott posted on Facebook. “If Barrie just passed a motion and Richmond Hill was to do likewise, it would be a strong affirmation. I understand why some would prefer to wait on the province, but if the motion was to show support for banning contributions, you missed the mark.”

Friends pay tribute to 22-year-old Richmond Hill drowning victim jgrimaldi@yrmg.com
Friends are paying tribute to friend, brother and son Nicholas Milonas, who passed away after drowning during a fishing trip on Georgian Bay. The 22-year-old from Richmond Hill died early Sunday morning, unable to swim, while on a fishing trip with two friends, aged 21 and 25, near Hailstone Island, in Carling Township. According to friends, the two other men, who are struggling with Nicholas’ passing, were taken to hospital with hypothermia. Since Milonas’ passing, there’s been an outpouring of grief from friends, relatives and coaches, who say he was an upstanding young man, an outdoorsman and, most of all, a man of his word. “I love you brother,” wrote friend Aryan Heydskiez. “It’ll forever be impossible to fill that empty gap all of us feel in our hearts. … all I could think of is how much of a wellrounded individual you are. Always smiling and bringing
people up with your positive thoughts, never putting others down… hilarious, a man of his words, always has your back, fearless, truly a big heart…” In his tribute, Heydskiez also mentioned some of the many activities outside of hunting and fishing that Milonas loved, including rugby, football and hockey, at which he was especially talented, drafted by an OHL team. Robert Kitmura, father of Milonas’ friend, Kevin Kitmura, said he coached both boys during their time at Alexander Mackenzie High School in Richmond Hill and said many people have been left devastated by the news. “It’s a horrible tragedy. It’s just brutal for us,” he said. “He was a wonderful, quietnatured kid. The kind of guy that would take the shirt off his back for you. ... He loved the outdoors. It’s just so surreal for us here.” He added that Milonas had been working as an electrical apprentice prior to his death. Jeff Quesnel shared a poignant story in remembrance of Nicholas on his Facebook
page, remembering the day he almost drowned, a potential tragedy stopped by friend Kyle Edwards. “I love you Nik,” he wrote. “I miss you more than you can ever imagine. I wish you were still here. You were a great man and a great friend. ... All I have to say to everyone is, life is precious.” He followed up his message, asking everyone in his life to wear life jackets. The men had been smelt fishing in Blair Creek in the lead up to the 4 a.m. accident. Although the OPP officer who spoke about Milonas’ passing said he’s not sure what exactly happened, he noted the boat capsized before two of the men swam back to safety. Milonas didn’t make it. He was unsure if there was bad weather or if the boat simply took on water. Milonas was recovered by the OPP’s underwater search and recovery unit. The men were not wearing life jackets, according to police. The funeral took place Wednesday at a Greek Orthodox Church in Markham.

Through two bouts of breast cancer, Bev Morra is grateful her oncologist from Mackenzie Health has been by her side every step of the way. Dr. Matilda Ng has explained the diagnoses and treatment plans in plain language, answered Morra’s questions and supported and encouraged her. Ng was even there to talk to when a relative died following a brief illness – an occurrence that left Morra devastated. As Ontario marks Doctors’ Day May 1, the Oak Ridges resident wants to publicly thank Ng and to praise the Richmond Hill hospital for providing superior care close to home. Morra was 50 in 2000 when a lump in her left breast was found to be cancerous. Her fear was tempered by the compassion she found in Ng as the doctor explained to her and her husband how the medical team would tackle her disease. “I found Dr. Ng to be very, Patient Bev Morra very caring and she took the time and explained everything in layman’s terms,” Morra said. “Emotions were running high. It certainly gave us reassurance and eased my mind on my journey.” When Morra heard she needed months of chemotherapy and several rounds of radiation, she was distraught. But Ng calmed her fears and even explained the treatments chosen for her meant she wouldn’t lose her hair. When Morra was diagnosed Dr. Matilda Ng with breast cancer for a second time in 2007, she drew comfort knowing Ng and the nurses who had cared for her the first time would be there for her again. This time, Ng told her stronger chemo meant she would lose her her hair. It was reassuring to know what to expect, Morra said. Receiving care close to home meant she could be in the comfort of her own home 15 minutes after treatments. Morra, who now sees Ng once a year for check ups, wouldn’t have wanted any physician but Ng by her side during her care. “We’ve known each other for 16 years and it is a relationship where we feel very comfortable with each other,” she said. “She is very caring and compassionate. Dr. Ng is very much a people person. She has this great gift of listening and explaining things so you can understand. You have that reassurance she is looking out for your best interests. The relationship patients have with Dr. Ng, we do care about each other.” Ng, a Thornhill resident, said Morra is one of her favourite patients because she listens and asks meaningful questions. She enjoys being a doctor who explains procedures to patients in simple terms and provides comfort as they face the hardships of cancer. Doctors’ Day was established in 2011 to fall on May 1 every year to honour Canada’s first female physician, Dr. Emily Stowe. What’s the difference between a Part I and a Part III offence?
For starters a Part I offence is called an offence notice (ticket) and has an out of court settlement (fine) on it, whereas a Part III is a “Summons” (has a date on which you must attend court to answer to the charge(s)). Part I matters require you to request a court date (if you want to challenge the ticket), they are often minor offences and the court penalty is kept at a minimum. Court penalties for Part III offences are more severe and can involve licence suspensions, jail time, heavy fines etc. Some examples of a Part III offence include; Drive without Insurance, Drive Under Suspension, Racing, Fail to Remain at Accident, Speeding over 50 km/h and over. It is important to know your options… I always recommend that you take advantage of my FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION.

A Markham councillor is throwing his support behind the StopTheKnocks campaign and wants his city to take stronger action against door-to-door scams. During last week’s general committee meeting, Colin Campbell pushed forward a motion calling for a provincewide band on door-todoor sales in the home services sector, such as water heaters, water filtration systems and furnaces. “These people are forcing their way into homes with fake IDs,” he said. “We need protection for seniors and newcomers. Let’s show some action for once.” Campbell argued that while the province introduced new legislation in the past year, it has not gone far enough. “The province only half addressed the issue,” he said. Some of the new rules included significant restrictions on how door-to-door sellers are to approach the door, present ID, and close sales at a person’s home. But some companies continue to mislead the public using fake IDs, fear tactics and contracts with severe cancellation fees, he said. The StopTheKnocks campaign and online petition were started by Vaughan residents Isaac Rudik and Stacie Sommer, who dealt with a door-to-door solicitor claiming to be from Enbridge days after moving earlier this spring. “Everyone of those so-called protection measures the province introduced a year ago were broken by the fraudster that came to our door,” Rudik said. The petition calls on the province to take immediate action to ban door-to-door sales this spring. Mississauga Councillor Karen Ras is also pushing the motion. But imposing a ban might not be that simple, since many legitimate companies do doorto-door canvassing, Markham Regional Councillor Jim Jones said. He noted there was no warning or official ADVERTORIAL

Richmond Hill senior stung in scam A 91-year-old Richmond Hill man calls himself a “mug” for being convinced to sign a pricey 10-year contract with a furnace company. Fred Kite told The Liberal he recently signed the contract to replace both his furnace and air conditioning unit because an aggressive salesperson told him the the government of Ontario wants to replace older, less-efficient furnaces. “I was stupid; it cost me $16,000 to replace the furnace and air conditioner,” admitted Kite,“but I spoke to a manager and managed to get out of the 10-year contract.” “I would have been stuck for $24,000,” he said, adding he has since contacted his Richmond Hill MPP to report the incident and hopes that other Richmond Hill residents won’t fall for pressure tactics or home services scams.

notice of Campbell’s motion provided to councillors and the public. “That’s the way many businesses market themselves,” Jones said. “Taking away their livelihood deserves a discussion.” Rather than an outright ban of door-to-door solicitors, it might be more effective to work on an awareness and education campaign, Jones said. “We should be highlighting these scams and educating the public,” said Jones, who noted he was on the receiving end of a Canada Revenue Agency phone call scam. “We should ban everything,” he said tongue in cheek. “Ban calls on your door, ban calls on the phone.” Mayor Frank Scarpitti agreed, adding a municipal bylaw is not the appropriate action. “You can’t stop people knocking on doors. We should have a bylaw stopping people from opening their doors,” Scarpitti said. “Opening the door is what makes you vulnerable.” Markham council wants to hear more from York Regional Police on some of the safety concerns, as well as how homeowners can better protect themselves.

Walk in Richmond Hill to beat MS This Sunday, May 1 you can walk with friends and families in Richmond Hill, Thornhill and Aurora to help end Multiple Sclerosis. Bring your friends, family and co-workers to make this year’s Mandarin MS Walk bigger and better. Food, entertainment, and prizes will be offered in celebration of fundraising efforts. The Mandarin MS Walk is a wonderful opportunity to interact with members of your community, while supporting a great cause. Canada has the highest rate of Multiple Sclerosis in the world. By choosing to walk and fundraise, you help make the world one step closer to a life free of MS. Last year, the Walk’s Ontario participants raised more than $3.8 million. Goals like these are made possible by top fundraisers, such as Margaret Latta, Nishi-Sunil Bhalla and Cornelia Leisinger, all participating at last year’s Richmond Hill-Thornhill-Aurora event.
“The MS Walk is a celebration of the power we have to change the lives of Canadians with MS,” says Alison Boyce, one of the Richmond Hill event co-ordinators. “Innovation is possible when people stand up in large numbers to force change. Your decision to walk will help move us closer to a cure, while enabling people with MS to live better until a cure is found.” The walk is hosted from the Elgin West Community Centre, at 11099 Bathurst St., north of Elgin Mills Road in Richmond Hill on Sunday. Check-in and coffee beings at 9 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 9:30 p.m. The 2.5-km and 5-km runs begin at 10 a.m. Lunch will be offered starting at 11 a.m. Closing ceremonies and team awards will conclude the event at noon. To register, visit mssociety.ca and click on MS Walk. - Jonalyn Aguilar

The Rotary Club of Richmond Hill hosts a charity gala Friday, May 6 at Le Parc in Thornhill to benefit a Family Dental and Oral Health Project in Guyana. The semi-formal evening includes cocktails, a sumptuous meal, dancing, silent auction and music from the George St. Kitts Band — all with a Caribbean theme. Many Guyanese people do not have access to a local dentist. Years ago, sev-
eral Rotary Clubs teamed together to purchase a dental bus to help families in rural areas. Tickets for the gala are $100 and can be obtained by calling Glen Waugh at 905-884-2900 or Gord Vandyke at 647-400-4725. If you can’t come for the fun, you can send in a donation for the dental bus; cheques can be made payable to Richmond Hill Rotary Charitable Foundation, PO Box 30568, 10660 Yonge St., Richmond Hill, ON, L4C 3C9. Malcolm Graham was quiet family man BY LISA QUEEN
I

n his quiet way, Malcolm Graham could light up a room with his smile and had a way of making anyone he spent time with feel special. Malcolm died at the age of 68 on March 25 at Southlake Regional Health Centre from complications three weeks after suffering a heart attack. The Grahams came to Newmarket in 1973, shortly after Malcolm graduated from Western University and a chartered accountant apprentice program with Pricewaterhouse in Toronto. They moved to town when Malcolm was offered a job with accounting firm Cossar, Hector and Payne on Main Street. They did have a tie to Newmarket since his wife Mary Beth’s parents, Gordon and Helen Ough, were born and raised in town and her grandfather, Jack Nesbitt, had been the mayor in the mid-1920s and again in the early 1930s. Malcolm and Mary Beth met in Blenheim District High School near Chatham when he was in Grade 11 and she was in Grade 9. It was love at first sight. “We met in high school and dated and that was it,” Mary Beth laughed. “He was very handsome, a fabulous smile, very athletic, just a nice guy. I don’t think you’d find

Malcolm Graham anybody that would say anything negative about Malcolm. He was one of those people, very giving in a quiet way, but always had time for people. Didn’t matter if it was business-wise or friends or neighbours. Just in a quiet way, he would be there.” They married on Oct. 29, 1966 while Malcolm was still at Western. The couple, parents of sons John and Jeff, would have celebrated their 50th anniversary this fall. When they first moved to Newmarket, Malcolm got involved with the Lion’s Club. In 1975, he and some friends founded the York North Racquet Club, a squash club that raised the hackles of some for its men’s
only policy. “There were a lot of women who were not very happy with that group, not happy at all. It didn’t bother me, but there were several others that were not too happy about it,” Mary Beth said. “It was a group of guys, there were some professional people and all kinds of great guys. They just decided they needed something (for men).” Initially, Malcolm, who would go on to establish accounting firm Bateman, Graham, Fitzpatrick on Davis Drive, was an avid squash player, but his interest waned as work demands grew. He also looked forward to an annual ski vacation with friends to

Vale, Colorado every December. Despite the pressure of work, from which he never retired, Malcolm loved spending time with family and friends at the cottage they have had in southwestern Ontario since 1977. “That was a big point for all of our family. It was always a very special place for everybody,” Mary Beth said. The whole family, including John and his wife, Connie, and their children, Mackenzie, Ireland, Conner and Liam, and Jeff and his wife, Susan, and their children, Georgia and Jack, loved spending time at the cottage. “Family was huge (to Malcolm). I just think he was very proud of what all of them have achieved,” Mary Beth said. “Particularly, for the grandchildren, I think (the cottage) is a fun place to be, you’re that next generation. He enjoyed them all. He loved having them around, loved having them at the cottage. Lots of boating, lots of swimming, lots of sailing. It was wonderful, really. A lot of family time. Malcolm worked really hard, but we had some real quality family time. Those are good memories.” Sadly, Jeff died six years ago at the age of 40 of a brain tumour after being diagnosed 12 years earlier. Because of his illness, the family has been big supporters of the

Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, helping to raise about $100,000 over many years. When Jeff died, his flag football league started a memorial golf tournament in his honour, a venture the family helped support. Initially, proceeds from the tournament went to the brain foundation. For the last three years, it has raised about $200,000 for the hospice at Southlake Regional Health Centre. “Those kinds of things were really important to Malcolm. You wouldn’t find him out there being the big cheerleader saying, ‘Hey look at us, what we’re doing’,” Mary Beth said. “It was always just in a very quiet way. It was huge for him to be giving back.” Malcolm will be missed by family, friends, neighbours and clients, Mary Beth said. “He was probably one of the most generous people I’ve ever met. Very kind. Always put other people ahead of himself. Even at the office, if people came in with even just the smallest problem, it didn’t matter. He would take just as much time with that person as he would with someone with a very complicated problem. Everybody felt he was giving his all,” she said. “And he had the most wonderful smile. It just made everyone else smile. He could just light up a room with that smile.”

Predeceased by wife Margaret, brother Joseph of Manchester, New Hampshire, and by parents Joe and Jessie Higgins of Agincourt. Father to Terry and his wife Linda, of Montreal and to Brian and his wife Dinah, of Charlottetown. Grandfather to Noah, Lucas, Lia and Kristin. Murray was born in Rainy River, Ontario in 1925, the son of a railroad worker. The family moved to Winnipeg, the nearest big city, during the depression. Upon finishing high school, Murray enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy. His two years’ service included active duty in the second world war on HMCS Westmount. The Bangor-class minesweeper, based in Halifax, was tasked with protection of Allied shipping in the North Atlantic. After the war, Murray attended University of Manitoba. He delivered the valedictory address to the B.Comm class of 1950. It was in Winnipeg, while receiving treatment at Deer Lodge Veteran’s Hospital for a minor medical ailment, that Murray met his future wife. Margaret was working at the hospital as a student of occupational therapy. They married in 1954 in the chapel of Sunnybrook veterans’ hospital in Toronto. Murray’s career in business and finance lead to teaching in the 1960s. He was a pioneer in the establishment of Ontario’s community college system, and joined the staff of Seneca College in its inaugural year in a converted warehouse on Sheppard Avenue. Retirement in the 1980s allowed Murray to follow his passion for helping others. He volunteered with groups that included Friends of North York Library, the Pat Arato Aphasia Centre and the cardiac rehab clinic in Richmond Hill. Murray was also a life-long person of faith. In Toronto area over the years, he served and worshiped God as an active member of Newtonbrook, Willowdale, Forest Grove and St. Matthew’s United Churches. “At the end of each day, have you made someone’s day brighter?” Murray, the old finance man, often asked. “I think my credits balance my debits.” Friends may call at Marshall Funeral Home, 10366 Yonge St., Richmond Hill, 6-9 p.m. Friday, April 29th. Memorial service at St. Matthew’s United Church, 333 Crosby Ave., Richmond Hill, 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 30th.
