y parents met in the summer of 1981 at a Unitarian Universalist church in Princeton, N.J. A courting that included organ recitals at the Princeton University Chapel, bicycle rides through the picturesque college town and occasionally crashing graduate school garden parties led to a December engagement in 1982. Looking back, my mother says it was the most romantic place to fall in love; of course, she hadn’t yet been to Richmond. My mom and dad wed on June 22, 1983, at the church where they’d met two years earlier. This summer, they’ll celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. For years after the wedding, my parents would recite the vows they’d written for each other on their anniversary. “It was a rededication each year of our commitment to each other,” my mother says. In this issue, you’ll find a story about three local couples who share my mother’s sentiment (Page 32). The feature on vow renewal ceremonies includes Richmond wedding industry consultant Meghan Ely’s intimate renewal ceremony in Ireland. Turn to page 96 for another local wedding industry insider’s account of her own ceremony. Lindsay Kaye Averette, a wedding planner and owner of LK Events + Design, was married at Byrd Park in February. Averette found creative ways to ensure that guests kept warm at her chilly outdoor wedding by providing blankets and hot chocolate at the ceremony, but chances are, if you’re reading this issue in the Richmond summer, you’re more interested in cooling off than warming up. We’ve got you covered with three craft cocktails perfect for summer soirees (Page 36). French Culinary Institute graduate and stylist extraordinaire Rachel Zell pulled together accent pieces from local shops that bring out the personality of each drink. We hope the themed cocktails will inspire you to have fun x My parents at their reception with drinks at your wedding. Speaking of inspiration, the Tom Wesselmann at the Nassau Inn. exhibition currently on display at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts inspired our feature shoot (Page 44). During the height of the American pop art movement, Wesselmann painted close-ups of everyday objects and shapes, from flowers to lips. You’ll see similarities to that art style in our studio shoot, where we magnified wedding elements that sometimes get lost in the big picture. The VMFA served as an elegant location for our ninth Artful Wedding on May 1. Style Me Pretty blog founder Abby Larson was the keynote speaker at the event that included a designer fashion show, champagne, hors d’oeuvres and fantastic prize packages. Many thanks to WTVR 6 meteorologist Carrie Rose for co-hosting the event and giving away the grand prizes. Rose was married on Oct. 20 at St. James’s Episcopal Church. Finally, I’d like to introduce myself as the new managing editor of Richmond Bride. I’ve contributed to the four past issues, and I’m excited to be on board in a leading role. I welcome any article suggestions and scrapbook submissions for upcoming issues. Please email me at anned@richmag.com or call me at 355-0111, ext. 329. Happy planning!

ISABELLA ALTHOFF
In addition to her work as a contributing stylist for Richmond magazine, Isabella Althoff is the fashion director for Virginia Commonwealth University’s Ink magazine and a former fashion director for RVA Fashion Week. The stylist for “Pop Romance” graduated from VCU in May and will soon move to Montreal to work as a creative developer at ALDO’s corporate office. ADAM EWING
A Richmond magazine contributing photographer since 2005, Adam Ewing has also turned his eye toward R•Bride fashion features over the years. In the current issue, the North Side resident photographed “Signature Swigs” at MOSAIC restaurant during lunch hour. “It’s always a challenge to shoot in a working location, get our job done and stay out of the way,” he says. JESSICA RONKY HADDAD Before
joining Richmond magazine as the online content editor in March 2012, Jessica Ronky Haddad served as arts and culture editor at Style Weekly. She wrote “The Last Hurrah” about bachelorette parties without hangovers and “Appily Ever After” about ways modern brides are incorporating mobile apps into their wedding. “I was married in the pre-tech age,” Haddad says of her June 1995 nuptials. CHRISTINA MACFARLANE
A fashion photographer and jewelry designer, Christina Macfarlane photographed the “Pop Romance” feature and supplied a headpiece for the shoot from her jewelry line Bohobo Collective (bohobocollective.com). “I envisioned the shoot to have an overall retro feel,” the Virginia Beach resident says. A soon-to-be bride herself, Christina was engaged at First Landing State Park on Valentine’s Day.

Much of the pleasure of planning a wedding is the looking forward. Like the way you look forward to finding your gown. He looks forward to that first glimpse of you in it.

WATERS PICKS FOR THREE GROOMSMEN ESSENTIALS:
ADVICE FOR LOOKING DAP P ER O N T H E BIG DAY
I
By JOAN TUPPONCE
n his role as Ledbury’s wedding style expert, Eric Waters helps customers select Ledbury products and provides advice on where to buy suits and how to pair shirts with ties. “We welcome grooms and their wedding parties to come to our showroom for a little bourbon and to coordinate their looks,” Waters says of the Richmond-based shirtmaking company. “It’s my job to help make the process of looking good for the big day completely enjoyable.”
x Eric Waters joined Ledbury in September.
Bride:
What style advice do you have for groomsmen? Eric Waters: My No. 1 piece of advice for groomsmen would be to keep it simple — all focus should be on the bride. That being said, the best way to look great in wedding pictures is to pay attention to the fit of your shirt and suit, ensuring a classic silhouette. What should men look for in the cut and fit of a shirt for the ceremony? Waters: A shirt should complement your body type. At Ledbury, we specialize in well-tailored shirts made with slightly less fabric in the waist and torso for a flattering shape. Your suit jacket should echo this tailoring. We also like soft-shouldered blazers and sport coats, which provide a more natural look.
Bride:
"My No. 1 piece of advice for groomsmen would be to keep it simple"
-Eric Waters
Bride:
Do any particular colors work well for weddings? Waters: For a more modern look, consider using complementary colors for groomsmen. For example, if the bridesmaids are wearing light blue dresses, try a navy tie with a white shirt and gray suit for the groomsmen. The wedding party will still look cohesive, without strictly matching. How can a groomsman incorporate accessories into his ensemble? Waters: While the bride usually selects ties or bowties, a groomsman can find individuality in little details like his cufflinks and watches. Personally, I recommend bringing a slick pair of shades to sport during some pictures and maybe for the dance floor later in the evening. Any final advice? Waters: It’s not every day you get to dress in a tuxedo. Take advantage of the opportunity to dress up, and have fun with it. Clothes can only take you so far; it’s all about how you wear it.

WEDDING KICK-STARTER A BRIDAL BOUTIQUE HELPS GET THE PLANNING PROCESS STARTED By RACHEL MACHACEK
I
f only an engagement ring came with an equally faceted guide on how to start planning a wedding, there would be fewer deer-inheadlights fiancées roaming the earth. If you’ve never planned a wedding (and have no intention of hiring a wedding planner), then where does a good bride start? Blush on Berry, a boutique wedding collective that opened last fall in the Fan, recently launched a new service, the Blushing Bride Guide, to answer that very question because it seemed no one else was. “A [wedding] planner is for day-of planning,” explains Jessica Maida, who owns Blush on Berry with fellow wedding professionals Amanda Robinson and Honey Armstrong. “We’re like fi rst-day-you’ve-beenengaged planning.” Their guides, which are personalized kits created after a one-hour client consult, have everything a bride in the process could need. Each one comes as a well-dressed box fi lled with a mood board, planning aids, magazines, freebies, gift certificates from local businesses and, most important, vendor refer-
rals. These referrals make up the bulk of the guide, and like everything else in the kit, they're based on the bride’s style and budget. About a week after the initial information exchange, the customized Blushing Bride Guide is ready for pickup. The basic guide costs $200. The premium guide, with more vendor recommendations and more goodies, is $250. “We gather as much information as possible about [the client’s] vision, budget and personalities, and between the three of us, I think we would know 85 percent-plus of the wedding vendors here in Richmond,” Armstrong says. It’s a great place to start, and then the bride can go off on her own with
x Eclectic furniture-rental company Paisley and Jade outfits the storefront.
stable footing, according to Robinson. Plus, the consult bypasses stressful hours researching online and shot-inthe-dark emails requesting quotes. Because this is just the tip of the planning process, brides don’t need to show up with much information. In fact, Armstrong, Maida and Robinson prefer more of a blank slate. A time frame and a budget are helpful simply to be able to fi nd vendors that will be available on their wedding day, as is an overall vision, like “Fall 2014/Vineyard.” Of course, Pinterest boards are more than welcome, and the owners believe the kind of bride who will benefit most from their service is a DIY-er who doesn’t want a cookie-cutter wedding. “Give us a vintage-circus-themed wedding,” Armstrong says.

SOME OPTIONS FOR A CLASSY AFFAIR By JESSICA RONKY HADDAD
We’ve all seen the drunk, tiara-wearing bachelorette sucking on a penis-shaped lollipop trolling the dance floor with a posse of inebriated friends. Trust us, you do not want to be that bride. Though the bachelorette party has become a rite of passage, there’s no need to emulate The Hangover. Avoid embarrassing photos and regrets with these ideas for a civilized toast to the end of singledom.
Theinclaerudesial 13adventzipurelines.park Just an hour west of Richmond, Sandy River Retreat caters to the adventurous bride.
The Figurative Plunge // Before taking the plunge into marriage, adventurous bachelorettes may want to leap from the treetops (while clipped into a safety harness, of course) at Farmville's Adventure Park at Sandy River Retreat (theoutdoor adventurepark.com). The aerial adventure zip-line park opened last summer and offers four separate courses with obstacles 12 to 45 feet off the ground, including 13 zip lines. “The whole concept is about coming out and challenging yourself to do something out of the box,” says Candice Smith, who owns the park with her husband, Mark. “Even if you are afraid of heights.” It’s a great team-building experience for a bridal party — once you conquer the course, there’s no wedding-day snafu you can’t face together. Obstacles include rope bridges, ladders, tightropes and swings. It takes three hours to navigate the course. The cost is $50 per person, reservations required.
Tea Time // Why not host a Downton Abbey-themed bachelorette tea party for a sophisticated bride? Donna Deekens of Teapots, Treats and Traditions (virginiateaparties.com) will provide everything you need, from china, silver, linens and party favors to vintage hats. “I try to change the focus a little bit and have a really fun atmosphere with vintage hats and boas,” Deekens says. “When they come, [guests] are encouraged to put on a hat. It’s a fun and frilly kind of atmosphere.” The menus range from dessert buffets, to high tea spreads complete with cucumber sandwiches, scones, hot crab dip and bachelorette cakes (think mini wedding cake). And of course, there’s the tea, either hot or cold. Deekens even offers an educational program on the history of tea. Hostesses are welcome to provide wine or champagne. “It’s very casual,” Deekens says. “Almost like a cocktail party.” Parties last two hours, and the cost ranges from $20 to $28 per person. > > >

Cook up Fun // Christine Wansleben of Mise en Place (miseen placeshockoe.com) says bachelorette parties often visit her Shockoe Slip cooking school for private culinary events. Each hands-on experience is tailored for the bridal party. Options range from a four-course formal dinner to cocktail party fare to an all-dessert menu. She’s worked with everyone from younger bridal parties who arrive with raunchy party favors to more mature groups. “It’s very social with everyone in the kitchen together,” Wansleben says. “We put on music and make it a lot of fun.” The hostess can choose to arrive early and decorate, and time for gift opening can be incorporated into the event. The 2 1/2-hour-party begins with drinks and hors d'oeuvres and ends with a sit-down meal and wine. The bridal party divides into smaller groups that work together to cook one menu item each. Wansleben provides the recipes, ingredients and professional instruction. The best part? Mise en Place handles the cleanup. Prices range from $55 to $75 per person. “What we try to teach are skills that any bride-to-be would like to have,” Wansleben says.

Bonnie and Chris Harlow recommitted to each other last year after reconciling from a separation. “Our relationship had been turbulent for a long time, and my husband wasn’t ready to throw in the towel on us,” Bonnie says. “Somehow he managed to capture my heart again. Chris knew I had wanted to renew our vows before our relationship took a turn for the worst, so he brought it up and I accepted.” The couple, who met in high school, wanted an intimate, contemporary ceremony and chose to recite a “blessing of the hands” reading instead of traditional vows. “The hands ceremony reflected our love and commitment with the understanding of God’s influence on our lives,” Bonnie says. Bonnie worked with Angela Parker at Angela’s Elegant Events to create a ceremony that was cozy, relaxed and elegant. “We are laid back personality-wise, but I do adore a little bling,” Bonnie says, noting that she created a backdrop for the ceremony that reflected glimmery elements of Jiko at Walt Disney World Resort, the couple’s favorite restaurant. Even though the day was a whirlwind, Bonnie and Chris carved out a few minutes for themselves before the ceremony started. “Having one-on-one time to talk to each other pre-ceremony and also exchanging our vows again with dear friends and family that watched us as a couple go through all of our ups and downs had such a profound effect on me personally,” she says. “We wanted to do this to show the love and devotion we have for each other. It was a choice to stay married and move forward as a couple and family.”

IRISH LOVE
Nov. 5, 2010
Meghan and Travis Ely were just as surprised as their families when they decided to renew their vows just a year after their wedding ceremony. “Everything just fell into place,” Meghan says. The couple originally wanted to slip away and get married, but instead they opted for a traditional wedding the fi rst time around. “We were confl icted,” Meghan says about the wedding. “We wanted to have family and friends and knew they wouldn’t be pleased with us if we decided to dash off and do it ourselves.” The idea for the renewal ceremony surfaced when Meghan, who owns the wedding public relations and marketing fi rm OFD Consulting, was asked to speak at an industry conference in Ireland. In a conversation with the conference coordinator, Annie Byrne, she mentioned that she and her husband had always wanted to have a small ceremony overseas. Three months later, she and Travis were standing in front of a celebrant in the Gallarus Oratory, a stone structure sometimes used as a chapel, outside of Dingle, Ireland, with Byrne and a Celtic singer by their side. Casually dressed in jeans, Meghan and Travis renewed their vows in a traditional handfasting ceremony with their hands wrapped together in red ribbon. Later they drove to Dick Mack’s, a quaint Irish pub, for an evening of music and celebration. “It was wonderful,” Meghan says. “I can look back and say we did it both ways. It made Ireland endearing to us. We have been back twice since.”

RICHMOND REUNION
Lesa and Lonnie Thomas married in 1989 at the courthouse in Emporia after only a two-week courtship. Twenty-three years later, they renewed their vows in a traditional military wedding at The Jefferson. Lesa, who was raised in Church Hill, and Lonnie, a Marine chief warrant officer in charge of the Pacific region, live in Surprise, Ariz., but Lesa was determined to bring the ceremony back home. “I am family-oriented, and a lot of my family wouldn’t be able to afford to come” to Arizona, she says, adding, “I have always wanted to have a ceremony. I always wanted to be in a dress and have all the hoopla.” That hoopla included buying a wedding dress at Bridals by Lori in Atlanta, the shop made famous by the TLC show Say Yes to the Dress Atlanta. When the staff heard her story, the show decided to feature the couple’s ceremony on an episode that aired last September. Lesa planned the vow renewal ceremony in just six weeks with the help of the staff at The Jefferson. “The staff was awesome,” Lesa says. The couple had 100 attendees — friends and family from as far away as Hawaii and Italy — at the ceremony. One of their sons, Lonnie Jr., served as best man. Even though she planned all the details, Lesa was unaware that Lonnie had arranged a traditional line of swords for the ceremony. As she headed toward the hotel’s grand staircase, she saw a line of officers outfitted in Navy and Marine dress uniforms on either side of the staircase. “I was so nervous,” she says. “I had no clue about the swords. We didn’t rehearse with them. It made me fall in love with my husband all over again.”

With romantic packages starting at less than $150 a night that include sparkling wine, chocolate-dipped fruit and a couples’ spa treatment, it’s hard to believe that this opulent cliff-side accommodation isn’t booked for months. Large crowds of tourists from across Europe often interrupt Dubrovnik’s Eden-like summers, so opt to visit in mid-September, when the walkable city still offers beach-friendly weather but crowds are lighter. (Opposite page) STRIKE A POSE: “I felt very strong about not spending a lot on a dress,” Clare says. Her $700 Mori Lee gown, which was nearly identical to a $4,000 Amsale she initially coveted, was ivory with a ruffled collar and buttons down the back. (This page, clockwise from top left) PRETTY IN PINK: The bride with her girls (left to right), Julienne Brown, Victoria Busey and Cristie Varvaro.
NEW YORK MINUTE: Matt and Clare assigned the table numbers as special places around Manhattan that they like to go. POP OF COLOR: Clare didn't want her colors to compete with the Bolling Haxall House's décor, so florist Janie Medley of Flora Design included minimal pops of color in the flowers.
FLOATING AWAY: Clare purchased this long veil on eBay because the one her mother wore during her own wedding was too short.
DADDY’S GIRL: There wasn’t a dry eye at the reception after Clare’s dad, Jefrey Brown, read a poem he wrote for his little girl on the night of her first birthday.
I DO: The Rev. Charles Aiken performed the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church ceremony.
PLEASE BE SEATED: Guests enjoyed a brunch-themed dinner at long, family-style tables.
att Meneely knew his girlfriend, Clare Brown, was going to be difficult to surprise with an engagement. The pair, who met during graduate school in Syracuse, N.Y., lived together in New York City, which made secrets difficult. So Matt waited for a day that Clare wouldn’t expect it — Valentine’s Day, her least favorite holiday. When he popped the question, Clare was indeed surprised. Clare had experience planning events in New York City, so she knew how much that would cost. Instead, the couple used their 16-month engagement to plan a wedding in Clare’s hometown of Richmond that fit their taste and budget. The June 2, 2012, nuptials were held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in the Fan, where Clare sang in the choir growing up. The ceremony itself was short and sweet and included some intimate details, such as readings by her sister and Matt’s brother. As a tribute to Matt’s work in the movie industry and the couple’s love of film, the wedding party walked down the aisle to the “Feather Theme Song” from Forest Gump. Since Matt and Clare did a first look photo shoot before the ceremony, they were able to jump right in and enjoy the cocktail hour with their guests at the reception. Then everyone dined on brunch for dinner. Clare is a big breakfast person, so White House Catering served some of her favorites, including chef-prepared pancakes, omelets, potatoes and steak. The reception was decorated simply with white flowers (primarily baby’s breath) so as not to compete with the house's existing décor. Photos from both of their parents’ weddings were placed around the site. Clare’s parents had also wed on June 2 — 28 years prior. In lieu of favors, the couple had a candy buffet for guests to take home treats. The table included Clare’s favorite gummy candies and Matt’s beloved chocolates. After the wedding, and before returning home to New York City, the couple honeymooned at a quiet resort in Mexico.

FAMILY TIES: The couple with Joanne Claire Miller (far left), Amanda’s paternal grandmother, and Dot Davis (far right), Monte’s maternal grandmother. SERENE SPOT: “That evening was absolutely beautiful,” Amanda says. SWEET TREATS: Tiffany Pajic, Amanda’s friend from graduate school, created a small cake for Amanda and Monte to cut during the reception.

hen Amanda Kimbrough Miller and James Monte Ford Jr. met in January 2009, she was in her first year of working as a nurse, and he helped train her at the VCU Medical Center Evans-Haynes Burn Center. The pair spent a lot of time in professional settings that year, and the following year they celebrated their joint birthday (Jan. 6) together. Amanda, who had been harboring a crush, surprised Monte with a kiss, and they were instantly an item. Monte proposed on Aug. 19, 2011, at the Jefferson Hotel, an evening originally designed to celebrate Amanda’s first day of graduate school. Wedding planning followed. Amanda and Monte’s Aug. 4, 2012, wedding was almost derailed, though. A lack of communication from the venue that the bride-to-be had chosen was giving her uneasy feelings. Monte did some research and discovered that the business was going bankrupt. Enter Castle Hill Cider. Wedding planner Colleen Cook of CCS Events turned the couple on to the site. The ceremony was held outside under four European Linden trees, with the 125 guests seated in rented church pews. “I wanted the ceremony to feel sacred like we were in a church, yet be outside because being out in nature is spiritual to me,” Amanda says. Harpist Virginia Schweninger played songs throughout, including Etta James’ “At Last,” and a flutter of butterflies was released once the couple was pronounced man and wife. Guests enjoyed a cocktail hour on the lawn with watermelon bellinis and caramel apple martinis. Later, inside the barn area, guests were served a full dinner that included lamb shanks, salad, family-style sides and wine. The reception was decorated with romantic Southern touches, including lace table overlays and chair covers made by Monte’s mom. To incorporate Amanda’s love for horses, the couple painted horseshoes as table numbers. After the wedding, Amanda and Monte, who live in Richmond’s Northside, celebrated their new life together in Kauai, Hawaii.

(Opposite page) A WORK OF ART: The couple poses in front of a sculpture by Richmond artist Demetrios Mavroudis, one of several on the property. (This page, clockwise from top left) IN THE NEUDE: Pearl's Bakery created this minimalist cake, and florist Dennis Brumback, who did the flowers for Emily’s parents’ wedding 35 years prior, was the mastermind behind the Portland-inspired flowers. DOWN THE AISLE: Emily’s dad, veteran broadcaster Tim Timberlake, walks the bride down the aisle. The veil, which has been worn by some of Emily’s cousins, was purchased several years prior on a trip to Belgium with the bride’s grandmother.
WHAT A VIEW: It was about 90 degrees the day of the wedding, but a nice breeze coming off the James River and three large decanters of agua fresca kept the guests hydrated during the ceremony. HOUSE ON THE HILL: Inger Rice, former owner of the Rice House, was a guest for the evening. She had always hoped that one day the house would host a wedding. FLOWER CHILD: Evelyn Glenn, for whom Emily was a nanny the year prior to the wedding, was supposed to be the veil attendant during the ceremony, but shyness got the best of her.

here are a lot of great venues in Richmond, but chances are you’ve already been to several weddings at each of them. So when Emily Timberlake, a Montessori preschool teacher, and Davis Hand, a computer programmer, stumbled upon a virgin site — the Rice House — they booked it without hesitation. Australian Ambassador Walter Rice and his wife, Inger, were the original mid-1960s occupants of the house that overlooks the James River and is designed by famed architect Richard Neutra. The couple owned the home until 1996, at which time they donated it to the Science Museum of Virginia. The site’s international-style architecture, coupled with the fact that it was an actual home, gave Emily and Davis a familial setting for their summer wedding. The couple, who met in 2004 on the first day of orientation at the University of Mary Washington, grew up in Virginia (her in Richmond, him in Northern Virginia), and they now live in Portland, Ore. After a relaxed breakfast at home with her parents, Emily and her bridal party got their hair done and readied themselves for the wedding. Then everyone, including Davis, met at the Rice House for photos and quality time together, which Emily said helped lower the stress level. The nuptials were short because Emily and Davis were mindful that most of the guests would be standing in Richmond’s June heat. Emily walked down the aisle in an ivory Grecian-style Saja dress. The reception featured small, Southern-inspired plates by Mosaic Catering — chicken and waffles, sweet potato biscuits with ham, and jambalaya — a nod to the quick bites at food trucks the couple enjoys in Portland. The cake, created by Pearl’s Bakery, also had personal symbolism. Moss and plants representing the woodsy Pacific Northwest covered a coconut cake, a tip of the hat to their Hawaii honeymoon. The decorations throughout the reception area were minimal so as not to compete with the clean lines of the Rice House. Before the couple left for their honeymoon and subsequently returned home to Portland, they gave their guests CDs of love songs to remember the magical evening. NEED HELP CORRALLING RECEPTION GUESTS’ PHOTOS OR CHOOSING YOUR FIRST-DANCE SONG? TAP INTO SOME W E D D I N G - D A Y T E C H . By JESSICA RONKY HADDAD Chances are you announced your engagement with a Facebook status update, have created a Pinterest board to collect reception ideas, and have sent wedding guests a link to your online registry. We draw the line at emailed thank-you notes, but mobile app developers have come up with a solution to help you manage nearly every other aspect of your wedding.
All Together Now A number of services make it easy to communicate every detail of your wedding day by providing all relevant information to your guests — from directions to the church to a link to your registry — via a customized wedding app you create and invite them to download. With Our Wedding Usher (our weddingusher.com, $99), you can create a customized guide to escort your guests through the day. You can share an hour-by-hour schedule, directions to the ceremony, parking options, and for out-of-town guests, a list of the top things to do in your city during the wedding weekend. The app even offers an option to send out alerts in case of a sudden change in plans. Appy Couple (appycouple.com, $28) offers a wide variety of stylish designs and hip color schemes that allow you to create an organizational app that matches the theme of your wedding. You can even order printed wedding invites to match your app’s design. Appy Couple includes a social element where guests can post photos and chat among themselves before the wedding day. With Tie the Knot (tietheknotapp.com, free) you can design your own wedding app and matching website to keep guests informed about all your wedding events, allowing you to link to your wedding registry and to share information such as your guest list and wedding song playlist.

Candid Camera Disposable cameras are so 20th century. While you’re busy posing for formal wedding shots, why not put your guests’ smart phones to work by crowd sourcing your candids? Wedding Snap, (weddingsnap.com, $129$249) is the Cadillac of wedding photo sharing apps. The service collects all of your guests’ photos and videos into one online album, even going so far as to add professional retouching to your iPhone snapshots. After signing up, the company provides you with 200 business cards to distribute to your guests that explain how to download and where to upload their photos. Each album is assigned a customized code, and you can post the code on your wedding website and share it through social media. After guests download the app, they simply enter the album code and start snapping away, using one of seven filters. You can arrange to have a live slideshow of your guests’ submissions streamed during your reception and, not to worry, Wedding Snap will moderate the photos to make sure nothing embarrassing pops up on screen. Wedding Party (weddingpartyapp.com) and The Flock (theflockapp.com) provide similar services, but they’re free. Wedding Party offers more features, even organizing guests’ photos into a minute-by-minute timeline based on when they were taken. A digital guestbook is available, and guests can comment on each other’s photos. Once you establish your album, download place cards from Wedding Party with directions on how to use the app.
Techno Music
Stressed out about choosing just the right song for your first dance? Created by a professional wedding DJ, Wedding Songs Planner (weddingsongsplanner.com, $1.99) helps streamline the process by offering curated lists of popular wedding songs. Choose a category such as bouquet toss, cake cutting or grand entrance, and then choose a musical genre and scroll through a list of songs. The app allows you to preview the songs and even links to the lyrics so you can avoid any mention of love gone wrong. Add the songs you like to a favorites list and email it to your DJ. Fun Wedding (funweddingapp. com, $0.99) gives users access to 19 music charts that are updated monthly from millions of song requests made through the DJ Intelligence music request system at wedding receptions. It even includes a list of the most overplayed songs. If you want your guests to tear up the dance floor, this insider info may come in handy.

LEARNING TO LET GO
LOCAL WEDDING PLANNER LINDSAY AVERETTE KENNEDY REFLECTS ON HER OWN BIG DAY As told to JOAN TUPPONCE || Photos by EVA RUSSO PHOTOGRAPHY Phillip Stephen Kennedy II and Lindsay Kaye Averette married on Feb. 23 at the Carillon at Byrd Park. Lindsay is a wedding planner and owns LK Events + Design
W
hen I fi rst got engaged, all of my friends and family kept questioning how I would be able to let go and just be a bride. It’s second nature for me, and it’s my job, to try to control a situation and make decisions. It turned out to be easy during the planning process. I enjoy planning and designing weddings. I wouldn’t be doing what I do if I didn’t. But unlike with client weddings, I made sure to soak everything in, while intimately involving my family and friends in the process. The people I love helped me remember to enjoy myself and focus on what was really important throughout my wedding planni ng. I only got
96 Richmond BRIDE
one chance to do this — I wanted to make it count. The most difficult part of the role reversal from planner to bride was delegating on the actual wedding day. My wonderful staff, Shelley Smith, Courtney Elliott and Nikki Hanger, was there to make the weekend incredibly smooth — from setup to day-of logistics. However, it didn’t stop me from taking charge, making schedules, setting up family portraits and ensuring that the band played a particular song for my new husband, Phil. Hey, you can’t take the wedding planner out of the bride. For me, registering for gifts was the most overwhelming experience. Rows and rows of china, flatware, glassware, towels, duvets — and I don’t know what color to paint our bedroom yet. It was overwhelming and my normally fine-tuned decision-making skills came to a screeching halt when we stood in the store. It all felt so unorganized. I
guess I’m confident when it comes to designing and planning events and less so when it comes to making decisions about my home. Typically what brides find most difficult — traditional wording of stationery, seating charts and focusing a design or site layouts — is second nature for me. And fun. For instance, I loved doing our seating chart for the wedding; it took us only two hours one weekday night. My assistant, Shelley, will tell you I had one moment right before I walked down the aisle when I felt my fi rst tinge of stress and anxiety. In seconds, I would be married to my best friend. My dad walked in the room, he saw me for the fi rst time and I bawled my eyes out. Phil’s 6-year-old nephew ran into the bathroom and got me a paper towel, and that just made me cry harder. Phil’s father’s eyes got red, and I looked over to see that my sister’s and mother’s mouths were quivering. It was a sight. But once Shelley and my other staff signaled us to start, we took deep breaths, hugged and kissed each other, and began the walk up the Carillon steps. My family is my true support system. When it looked like I was about to have a moment, they would put a hand on my back, hug me or change the subject. Whatever the gesture, it kept me calm and sane. Plus, I’ve been with Phil for six years. This was a decision and a day that we had both been anticipating for a long time. I just wanted to hurry up and kiss him.
We recommend Glenward Gates for gorgeous bridal receptions and parties. Please contact at www.glenwardgates.com
