Explore the Poe Museum, which documents literary genius Edgar Allan Poe’s life in Richmond during the early 19th century. Tour the Maggie L. BY MOTORCOACH Interstates 95 and 64 are the major corridors providing access to the Richmond region, which is within a day’s drive of half of the U.S. population. Within two hours are the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the nation’s capital to the north. Curate a tour with art, film and lit Following Poe’s Path — Explore the life of Edgar Allan Poe and his time in Richmond with a tour of his Richmond haunts. The day includes a canal boat ride, dinner, a visit to the Poe Museum and a Haunts of Richmond tour. Allow half a day. Performing Arts — Home to many professional arts groups, including the Richmond Ballet, Latin Ballet of Virginia, Richmond Symphony and Virginia Opera. Or choose from the Virginia Repertory Theatre’s student-friendly performances, the Richmond Shakespeare Festival’s outdoor productions or a variety of local productions at Richmond CenterStage and Swift Creek Mill Theatre. Meanwhile, touring artists and Broadway shows take the stage at the 85-year-old Altria Theater. Manchester Slave Trail — From 1680 until 1780, Richmond was the second-largest slave market in the United States. For 40 years prior to the Civil War, Richmond was the nation’s center for the export of slaves. The trail is a memorial to those who walked this route. Now, as it was 150 years ago, this walk is an emotionally powerful experience. The Elegba Folklore Society offers powerful, torch-lit tours of the trail. Allow two to three hours. Lumpkin’s Jail — Site of the holding area for slaves before they were taken to auctions. After the Civil War, the jail was transformed into a school for African-Americans; the school eventually became Virginia Union University. Allow 30 minutes to one hour.
Richmond Slavery Reconciliation Statue — Designed to raise awareness and provide accurate information about Richmond’s role in the slave trade. The statue is linked to identical memorials in Liverpool, England, and Benin, Africa. Allow 30 minutes.

With an economic impact estimated at $45 million from the first season, many in the region cheered the news that Turn would return with 10 new episodes. Production got underway in the fall and was expected to continue through early February. AMC was quiet about the upcoming storyline, but when talking with reporters last year about the potential for subsequent seasons, executive producer Craig Silverstein hinted that Benedict Arnold would make an appearance.

Incorporating architectural elements from the original 16th-century English manor, Agecroft Hall was reconstructed in the 1920s on a 23-acre site overlooking the James River. Opened in 1969 as a historic house museum, Agecroft presents guided tours of period rooms, focusing on domestic life in an English manor during the 16th and 17th centuries. This remarkable example of pre-Elizabethan architecture has gardens designed by Charles Gillette. Highlights include the Knot Garden, Herb Garden and Fragrance Garden, all which were inspired by 17th-century examples. The Sunken Garden (pictured above) was patterned after the Pond Garden at Hampton Court Palace in England and is filled with a spectacular display of flowers from spring to fall.
