ichmond’s voters elected two new city councilmembers and a pair of new school board members, creating significant change in the city’s

political landscape.

Mayor Tom Butt will retain his position after beating Vice Mayor Melvin Willis. Willis was one of three candidates supported by the Richmond Progressive Alliance for council seats. Of the other two, incumbents Ada Recinos and Eduardo Martinez, only Martinez will remain on the dais.

The election also brought to an end the Richmond Progressive Alliance’s supermajority on the city council. Before the election, five members were part of the RPA: Jovanka Beckles, Ben Choi, Martinez, Willis and Recinos. Now, Beckles and Recinos are out, to be replaced by Richmond’s youngest and it appeared at press time, one of the city’s most senior councilmen.

25-year-old Demnlus Johnson received almost 12 percent of votes, more than any other contender. As of this writing when county officials are still counting ballots, the unofficial vote tally shows two-time Richmond mayor and former councilmember Nat Bates, 87, leading in

the race for the third seat, ahead of Vinay Pimplé by 20 votes and Cesar Zepeda by 73 votes.

The RPA’s loss is not the only major demographic shift on the city’s governing board. The addition of Johnson and the return of Bates (or Zepeda or Pimplé) creates an all-male Richmond Council in a city that is about 51 percent female an 49 percent male, according to Richmond’s most recent fact sheet.

Without Recinos and Beckles, the official body will also be without any Spanishspeaking members, whereas 35 percent of the city’s families speak the language in their homes.

Another local governing body seeing notable change is the West Contra Costa Unified School District’s board, which will also receive two new members. District teacher Stephanie Hernandez-Jarvis (who received the most votes of the 13 candidates) and retired teacher Consuelo Lara joined incumbent board president Valerie Cuevas in the winner’s circle.

That puts three Latinas on the fivemember county school board. The settlement of a lawsuit filed earlier this year against the district means the new board members will only hold their seats for two years instead of the usual four.

Richmond voters also decided on Measures H and T. Measure H, which passed by a wide margin, is a transfer tax on properties valued at $1 million or more.

Richmond’s Former Prisoners Get Out The Vote

T

his year, California had the largest number of people registered to vote in the state’s history, with nearly 20 million ready to hit today’s polls. Formerly incarcerated people in Richmond, some of whom are voting for the first time, helped the state reach that record. In the lead up to the election, organizations across the city worked to educate formerly incarcerated people and their families about their right to vote.

Laws vary across the country on voting rights for those who have served time or are currently imprisoned. In some states, including Maine and Vermont, voting rights are never revoked, regardless of what a person has been convicted for. In others, like Arizona, people serving time for a felony can’t vote until they’re out of prison, and those who have been convicted twice or more must have their civil rights reinstated by a judge before they can vote again.

California falls in the middle of these two extremes.

People who aren’t currently serving time in a state or federal prison and aren’t on parole are eligible. This includes most people in county jails, thanks to a law signed in 2016 by Gov. Jerry Brown.

Chala Bonner, a community organizer with the Safe Return Project, a Richmond organization that supports the re-entry of those coming home from imprisonment, says that many of those in county jails and formerly incarcerated don’t know that they’re likely to be eligible to vote.

Their confusion is easy to understand. Check out the Secretary of State’s explanation of who is eligible to vote, and you’ll find a list of seemingly contradictory bullet points. For example, people can vote if they’re in a county jail as a condition of their sentence but can’t if they’re in county jail serving time for a state prison felony.

Bonner, who served a short sentence in Solano County Jail, says she thought she couldn’t vote until she ran into somebody who said, “‘You can,’ And I was like, ‘I’m going to the polls right now.’”

Bonner now oversees a team of seven formerly incarcerated people at Safe Return Project who help to educate others on their voting rights. In the weeks leading up to the election, the team made several visits to the West County Detention Facility to encourage people incarcerated

there to vote. They also knocked on doors across Richmond to register formerly incarcerated people and other community members, reaching nearly 1,000 people.

On the afternoon of Election Day, hours before the polls closed, the team called these same people again to encourage them to vote.

“People who were incarcerated feel like they have to just do what you’re told, what other people say,” said Bonner.

“I want people to know that they can help to change the narrative. That they have a voice.”

Edward Williams, 77, volunteers at the front desk of Reentry Success Center, which lies across the street from Safe Return and hosts classes and support groups for those recently released from incarceration. The re-entry center offers lessons in topics as diverse as cognitive behavior change and resume writing.

This is the first election Williams has ever voted in. He’s been imprisoned four different times since he was 18 years old. After his most recent incarceration of 30 years for second-degree murder, he returned to Richmond, where he grew up. That was four years ago. He was on parole during the 2016 presidential election but didn’t register until this year.

“I wanted to vote because I’ve never voted before,” says Williams, who voted by mail. “It felt good. I felt like I had a sense of power, I guess you could say.”

Williams’ business card introduces him simply as a “community advocate.” He carries with him a binder full of newspaper clippings, certificates and photos that document the numerous activities he’s been involved in, from pushing for greater access to food stamps to supporting the opening of the reentry center. He says he continues to be inspired by civil rights leaders of the 1960s, quoting Martin Luther King Jr. and recounting stories of his days as a member of the Nation of Islam in the 1960s.

“Voting gave me some more insight on what people went through trying to get the vote,” Williams says. “The longer I live, I see there are still disenfranchising people.

It’s amazing that’s going on in the richest country in the world.”

California’s notoriously long ballot didn’t make Williams’ first voting experience easy. “For those names I didn’t know, I just didn’t fill out anything,” he said. But he’s clear on the issues that matter to him. “When I went to prison, I didn’t see any homeless people, but now I see people with PhDs, and they’re homeless. ste año, California tuvo el mayor número de personas registradas para votar en la historia del estado, con casi 20 millones listos para ir a las urnas. Midterms Spotlight Rising Latino Power

he full tally of the Latino vote on the mid-term election is not in yet, but the available information makes one thing clear: Latino power is rising.

Preliminary reports indicate that Latinos eligible to vote now number a record 29 million (12.8% of all eligible voters). More than 11% of all voters nationwide in the mid-term election were Latino in what analysts consider a major jump. Of the Latinos who voted, 69% voted for Democrats while 29% went for Republicans, according to exit poll data from the National Election Pool.

Republican fears of the Latino voter are manifesting in the results. More than one out of every four Latino voters were first-time voters. Democrat excitement about the future, however, may not be realized fast enough for 2020, thanks in no small part to their continued lack of investment in the Latino vote.

A majority of Latino voters reported that they hadn’t been contacted by a major party about voter registration.

Despite this lack of attention to what some analysts call the Democrats’ “Latino problem,” Democrats nonetheless appear to be the benefactors of the rise in Latino voting power.

A number of indicators appear to confirm the antiTrump Latino moment some predicted. For example, there were spikes in the number of Latinos voting in battleground states and in key races, record Latino gains in Congress, an increase in Latino officials elected in 36 state races, a decrease in Latino Republican members of Congress, an increase in Latina participation.

The anti-President Trump tilt is clear in congressional races. Democratic Latino members in the House jumped from 27 to 32 while remaining stable in the Senate. At the same time, the number of Latino Republican House members dropped from seven to five.

Similarly, mid-term results in Latino-heavy states also favored Democrats, with Latinos making up a major share of voters in competitive Senate races. In the.

Latino turnout. An analysis of early voter turnout in some of Texas’ largest, most diverse counties found increases in Latino participation that matched levels seen in the 2016 presidential election (turnout in presidential races is usually far higher than during midterms).

Local indicators in Texas yielded similar results. In El Paso County, the home turf of Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke, voter participation jumped 168% from 2014.

Hildalgo, Webb, Travis, Cameron and several other Texas counties also saw 100%-plus leaps in Latino voters.

In Florida, a record 2.2 million Latinos registered to vote in 2018, up 8.4% over 2016. Of the Latinos who voted in the still-contested Senate race, 54% voted for Democrat Bill Nelson and 45% backed Republican Rick Scott, while in the contest for governor, 54% of Latinos voted for Democrat Andrew Gullum and 44% for Republican Ron DeSantis. Many analysts believe these results signal a continuation of the decline and fall of the conservative Cuban vote that once reigned in the Sunshine state.

In Nevada the 67% of Latinos who voted for Democrat Jackey Rosen in the Senate race played a major role in defeating Republican Dean Heller, who lost by just under 50,000 votes. Las Vegas unions, many of which are more than 50% Latino, played definitive roles, registering tens of thousands of new Latino voters.

And in California, whose Latino majority makes it the

largest Latino state in the union, Latino voters boosted losing as well as winning candidates. Though he lost, State Senator Kevin de Leon beat the odds in his race against powerful incumbent U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who outspent him by millions but beat him by less than 10 percentage points, hardly the landslide defeat many predicted. Latino voters played a definitive role in de Leon’s campaign and rise.

An indication as telling as any in the country are the results in the birthplace of Reagan Republicanism, the longtime GOP stronghold known as the “Orange Curtain.”

Democrats in Orange County, with the help of a fastgrowing Latino electorate, will likely represent five of its seven congressional districts in a complete flipping of the political tortilla there.

And in what might be taken as a preview of the future of the LAtino vote with respect to the GOP, the startling results in Reagan country moved L.A. Times columnist Gustavo Arellano to write a piece titled “An Obituary for Od Orange County, Dead at Age 129.”

he sports court is awash in bright blue and gold, a pallet that not only matches the Golden State Warriors but also pays homage to the court’s original paint job.

In its heyday, the courts at Shields-Reid park was the training grounds for wouldbe basketball greats, including former NBA player and coach Paul Silas and Richmond legend Clyde Hardeman.

Over the years, disinvestment and a lack of city funds sent the park into terrible disrepair. The basketball courts quickly began to resemble badly pot-holed roads.

Not just five years ago, armed guards stood watch over the park due to the high level of crime occurring in and around the park.

“It was in disrepair and bad things were happening,” Troy Porter, recreation supervisor and Shields-Reid Center manager, said.

That was until it was picked among many other projects to be given some long overdue maintenance. After having closed off the sports courts for the repairs to be done, the courts were finally reopened last month for the local kids to test out.

Porter watched as the kids ran out on to the courts, allowing the next generation of Richmond athletes to have a place to call home.

“It brought joy to my heart,” he said.

Thanks to the support of Mark Mahoney — a retired member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 342 Union — the oncecelebrated basketball courts have new life again.

Mahoney and current leadership of Local 342 approached Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia’s office looking for a local community service project to take on. After looking over a long list of possibilities, Mahoney decided — based on available funding and time — that Shields-Reid was the exact project Local 342 was looking for. After picking out the project, Mahoney’s next step was to get the rest of the local unions on board.

“It was really easy,” he said. “When I went to the building trades, everybody

was so happy to help. It was not a problem at all.”

With close to 30 union members volunteering their time, the project was completed in just two weeks. Along with donated time and labor by union workers, Fregosi & Co. Paints Inc. donated $6,000 worth of paint. The total cost of the project, including donated labor and materials, was over $13,000.

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 10, James Boster with the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 16 said unions are known for giving back to their neighborhoods.

“I encourage other unions to do this,” he said. “It’s for the kids.”

He was, essentially, preaching to the choir as nearly 150 North Richmond residents, labor union contractors and city officials came together to celebrate the official re-opening of the newly renovated Shields-Reid Community Center outdoor play area.

Members of the West County labor unions Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 342, Plumbers & Steamfitters UA Local 159, Insulators & Allied Workers Local 16, Electricians IBEW Local 302, Sprinkler Fitters UA Local 483, and DC16 had all donated their labor, time and money in order to fix the park.

During the ceremony, Dr. Henry Clark reminisced over his time on the courts as a youth and the twilight basketball leagues that took place there in the summer. The leagues helped young athletes get an idea of what to expect during the coming high school basketball season.

Robert Rogers, district coordinator with Gioia’s office, said the kids who play on those courts are “resilient.”

“They’re beautiful. They’re buoyant,” he said. “They’re not gonna be stopped, but they were playing in a pretty tough playground.”

And the neighborhood youth around the Shields-Reid Community Center are in love with their new sports court, which now includes four square, hopscotch and a small soccer area.

During the ribbon-cutting celebration, several children immediately took to the basketball courts to shoot hoops. One of them was 12-year-old Christian Lee, who Continued on pg. 16

West County Mayors Collaborate at Economic Summit

F

rom jobs to tax revenue that can fund parks, schools and other public services, economic development affects many facets of life for the residents of West Contra Costa County.

This growth looks different across West County cities, but their leaders know that working together is key to making the entire region stronger.

At the West Contra Costa County Economic Summit, county leaders and local business people came together to brainstorm ways to boost revenue for cities and small businesses alike.

The summit was held in the Craneway Pavilion, which County Supervisor John Gioia says is the most fitting place to talk about the importance of a thriving business community in the West Contra Costa area. The space used to be a Ford automobile factory, the presence of which helped attract employees, as well as small businesses to serve that growing workforce during the 20th century.

Now, the Craneway and surrounding areas are poised to become a hub for alternative energy development.

“Just a few weeks ago, Audi selected this location—of any location in the world—to launch its first all-electric car,” Gioia said, referring to a recent event in which the German company introduced their new e-tron SUV. “I think we are ground zero for the new energy economy in

the United States.”

After remarks from Ilia Papas, founder of Blue Apron, Richmond’s fourth-largest employer, five local mayors took the stage. Richmond’s Tom Butt joined Timothy Banuelos of Pinole, Gabriel Quinto of El Cerrito, Genoveva Garcia Calloway of San Pablo and Chris Kelly of Hercules in a panel discussion, laying out issues and opportunities within their respective cities.

“For small businesses, Richmond is somewhat of a promised land,” Butt said. “Most of these businesses came into Richmond for one thing: cheap space.”

Butt also touted Richmond’s advantages, including over 30 miles of shoreline and access to a large, skilled workforce. Butt said the “unfair, inaccurate image in Richmond” is something that can inhibit companies from putting down roots. Richmond, however, is working on changing its image. He said the city is developing a marketing and branding strategy that will emphasize Richmond’s strengths, among them “progressive green initiatives” and “BART and freeway access.”

Butt continued to keep conversations about Richmond’s economic growth positive by advertising the city’s support of small businesses through its “revolving loan fund,” which

has provided 38 loans totaling more than $1.9 million to local small business owners.

Other cities are looking toward big box stores and chain restaurants to boost and maintain their economies.

“We have the area along 80, which is our big box and fast food mecca,” Banuelos said. “And that’s pretty important because we get around 67 percent of our sales tax revenue from there.”

Though each mayor focused on the unique needs of their residents, they also agreed that cooperation is the key to economic growth throughout the area.

“West County is a pretty strong region,” Banuelos said.

“We talk to each other all of the time. And combined, we’re far stronger than just ourselves.” “l work on these regional boards and commissions to try to find solutions to problems that go beyond our boundaries,” Butt echoed. “It’s essential that we’re able to do that.” •

ichard Jerome Boyd lived in Atchison Village in the Iron Triangle for 12 years before he passed away in January 2018. He was known throughout the city as a mentor for young people and played an integral role in decreasing gun violence throughout the city. He was also an organizer with the Contra Costa Interfaith Supporting Community Organization (CISCO).

Now, almost a year after his death, Boyd’s impact on his neighborhood and the community at large is expected to be remembered with the renaming of Atchison Village Park to Richard J. Boyd Park.

During their Oct. 3 meeting, Richmond’s Recreation and Parks Commission unanimously moved to send the renaming proposal to City Council for final approval.

The nomination paperwork was filed by Atchison Village residents Bennie Singleton and Jan Gilbrecht.

Singleton says Boyd would help anyone he could.

“He didn’t make any distinctions on race, where you lived or anything,” Singleton told the commission. “He was just there to help. He was my therapist and I was his.”

The duo was accompanied by seven others including Boyd’s parents, sister, and mentee, Johnny Perez.

“When I first met him, I was fresh out of juvenile hall, a high school dropout and had almost nothing going for myself,” Perez told the commissioners. “But he looked through all that, and he saw my potential.”

Perez spoke through tears as he recounted trips around the Bay Area with Boyd and the positive impact that resulted from their relationship. Folks who wrote letters for the renaming application expressed similar feelings of gratitude and respect for the work that Boyd did in the community.

“For me, Richard was a continual source of encouragement and positivity,” former Richmond Police Chief Chris Magnus wrote. “When discussions around him became heated, harsh words were exchanged, or accusations hurled, Richard was a peacemaker.”

Boyd’s neighbors remember him as an integral part of the Atchison Village community. He was also involved with a number of nonprofit organizations that address violence, poverty, and health inequities in Richmond, including Urban Tilth, Richmond Ceasefire and the

RYSE Center.

Diana Aranda, program manager with The California Endowment, said Boyd’s leadership model was to bring community together.

“It was a warm embrace for everyone: white, black, Latino, Asian,” she said. “Everyone felt like Richard was theirs.”

As each of the four speakers gave their testimonies, the sound of sniffles and murmurs of comfort arose from Boyd’s loved ones and supporters in the audience.

“If there’s any good reason to rename a park, you gave

a good reason,” parks commissioner Joey Smith said before she and her colleagues voted to recommend the park renaming to city council.

On December 4, the City Council will vote on the proposal to rename Atchison Village Park in honor of Boyd. If approved, the park’s 4.3-acre piece of land would be known as Richard J. Boyd Park. The renaming effort’s organizing committee are also requesting a plaque and image of Boyd to be displayed there. •

Voters Approve Tax Aimed at Helping Kids

F

or the first time in the city’s history, Richmond youth are set to have a local government department dedicated to serving them.

Kids First Richmond, the ambitious initiative that required passage of three separate local measures, passed its last test on Nov. 6 when voters approved an increase in the real estate transfer tax to fund the program.

According to Measure H’s official language, the transfer tax will not affect properties sold for less than $1 million, but will raise the transfer tax by the following amounts: 1.25 percent for property sold for $1 to $3 million, 2.5 percent for $3 to $10 million, and 3 percent for properties over $10 million.

At least part of that revenue will go towards implementation of Richmond Kid’s First. The plan is to roll out the program over the next few years, eventually allocating up to 3 percent of the city’s general fund over the next decade. The fund will be administered by a city-operated Department of Children and Youth.

Hopes were high at the RYSE Center on election night as supporters of the measure watched returns come in.

Isaiah Grant, 18, was part of the effort to get Measure H passed. He and his friends hiked up the hills of Point Richmond and El Sobrante and knocked on doors to inform people about the tax measure.

“A lot of people were supportive about it,” Grant said.

“When we would canvass, it was usually a house that had kids. When we told them it helped youth they were like ‘Oh, it must be beneficial for my kid.’”

Even though the RYSE team, which Grant was a part of, made a big push in local politics this year, some youth at the election night watch party said they didn’t see the point in voting.

Tearra Brintley, 19, said she is disappointed by our twoparty system and the back and forth between Republican and Democrat held chambers. She said she doesn’t see a point in helping that wheel keep turning.

“Even if I did vote and I go vote for things that people didn’t want me to vote, what was the point of it?”

Brintley asked.

Marques Egan, 18, said he doesn’t think the items on the ballot are going to make substantial changes.

“For the Obama election, I would’ve voted, if I could, because it was the first Black president,” he said. “That changed history, but for the senators I think it’s just gonna repeat itself.”

Although Brintley and Egan did support Measure H by canvassing, they seem to be frustrated by the constant cycle they see in politics.

“This generation just does not care,” Egan said. “For us, it is just an obligation. We do not really look into politics and we do not know what is going on unless we look at a meme or something.” •

mall American flags dotted the cemetery lawns at Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito for Veteran’s Day. In a long-standing tradition with the El Cerrito Lions Club and the Bay Area Scout Troupes, the Veteran’s Day flag placing event was held last Sunday, just as the sun rose above the hills and grave stones.

Youth from several Girls and Boys Scout Troupes, Cub Scout packs and Brownies came together with their scout leaders to place flags on the gravesites of veterans laid to rest at Sunset View.

This year, 12-year-old Nikolas Yang took part in his flag-placing. Having only just recently joined the Boy Scouts, Yang enjoyed spending time with his troupe mates.

He said he enjoyed putting down the flags and finding the graves of those who served, “because I get to respect them and thank them for helping us during the wars.”

The tradition itself has been going on for nearly 50 years. For the last twelve years, El Cerrito Lions Club member Barbara Renteria has been coordinating the event,

from organizing scout troupes to providing refreshments for the participants. She’s always has been fascinated with walking down the rows of graves and learning the ages, time periods, and families associated with each of the deceased.

“We’re very proud of this service tradition.” she said.

And the Lion’s Club isn’t alone in that pride.

Jennifer Hansen Romero, scout leader for Girl Scout Troupe 31585, has been bringing her troupe to the event for the past four years.

“I think that it’s a great lesson for them to understand what people have done for our country over the years,” she said. “To be able to honor them and encourage the girls to understand [the sacrifice].”

One of those Girl Scouts, eight-yearold Parker Nagafuji, enjoys taking part in the flag placing each year “because it makes me feel helpful and I like seeing people who have helped our country and other countries.”

Young or old, new or long-standing, each participant at the Sunday morning event carried with them a feeling of pride and thankfulness as they placed a flag next to the final resting place of each veteran. •

M

ore teens in the U.S. identify themselves using nontraditional gender roles, rejecting established labels and embracing a more gender fluid identity. A new study published in the journal Pediatrics found that almost 3 percent of teens in Minnesota teens don’t identify with traditional boy and girl gender labels. That number is reportedly higher than researchers expected and more than past studies have shown.

I wasn’t aware of the term gender fluid until about two years ago. I might have come across it strolling through Pinterest, looking at memes and fashion. I’ve always known that presenting my gender through clothes the clothes I chose to wear didn’t matter to me, personally, but most people around me made it a priority, so I went with it. Also, I like changing my look up, and I can look cute in anything.

When I was younger, I didn’t pay attention to my clothes. They were given to me like my body was, and I didn’t question either until I became older and more aware of adults’ concepts of gender. I did, however, gravitate toward the excited brightness of pink, a color that was associated with masculinity in the 1920s, but, somehow, is now considered feminine. That swap alone is proof that gender — and the labels that come with them — carries more weight than it should.

As a child, I was too busy creating visual art to consider my clothes and what they said about me. Then, at age six, I started attending Catholic school, where I wore a uniform for five years. This frustrated me because I had lost my sense of self. I often altered my uniform slightly. Because I hated it. I earned every free dress day pass awarded to me.

At age 12, I dressed in plain clothes that said little about my inner world: T-shirts, jeans with tears and paint stains, dirty Converses. I didn’t know how to do my hair, so it was always in a bun. I mostly wore black or grey. A lot of people told me I looked like a boy. Only on rare occasions did I put on makeup or straighten my hair. This highlights how femininity isn’t good enough on its own — it must be altered.

I started hating the world because of how differently it treated me when I wore comfortable, dirty, loose-

fitting clothes more acceptable for boys versus those that highlighted my feminine shape. I received more attention only after I developed an eating disorder around the beginning of high school. I wanted friends and romantic attention, so I wore sexier clothes, played dumb and didn’t do my homework.

My transition from a child to a young adult was evident in one year starting at Halloween. At 13, I wore black makeup and a homemade goth-vampire outfit, with blood dripping from my mouth. People mocked me. The next year, at age 14, I chose what people wanted: the sexy teenager. I put on makeup, two strips of red fabric and six-inch heels for my succubus costume. A male friend spanked me so hard it left a red handprint. He asked me how much it cost to sleep with me.

I wanted to be accepted, but it backfired.

Adults were hitting on me when I was 14. It eventually made me so sad and angry that I went back to baggy clothes

and beanies. It hurt how fast boys lost interest in me, even though I was the same person under those clothes.

So now I know why clothes mean and cost so much. We are all human underneath the wrapping, be it fabric or your own skin.

People are more depressed and anxious because we define ourselves by outdated standards. The beauty and complexity of one human being doesn’t fit into a checked box.

We need to normalize fluidity. We do this by mainstreaming individuality until doing what makes you happy is the norm.

Through compassion and acceptance of our individual paths to happiness, we can at least get over outfits and other exterior things.

Right now, there’s judgement, but the pain is worth the change.

No conocía el término gender fluid – personas de género fluido hasta hace unos dos años. Puede que lo haya encontrado en Pinterest, mirando memes y moda. He was encouraged to vote by the re-entry center’s staff, who help to oversee voter registration drives and talk to members about their voting rights.

Dameion King, 41, is a coach at the reentry center. “We’ve registered as many people as we could,” he says. “Because when a person can’t effectively participate in society, that’s poverty.”

King was first convicted of homicide at age 16, later found guilty of possession of a firearm and drugs and most recently imprisoned for a parole violation. He got involved in politics in 2000, when Richmond residents created a tent city to protest homelessness. He even ran for the Richmond City Council in 2014. “I wanted to demonstrate that someone like me can re-invent themselves, and contribute,” says King. “That’s America. In America we love to come back and get second chances.”

Michael Fulmore, 40, is another firsttime voter and member of the re-entry center, which is cutting its hours early today to encourage voting. He served nearly 13 years for manslaughter and assault with a firearm. Even though he was eligible to vote in the last election, he didn’t feel engaged enough with politics or society to vote. “I’m trying to learn to trust the system,” he says.

“I want to move forward. I know that I can’t do it by myself so I have to learn about the people who are trying to do something about these things now that I am eligible to do something about it.”

Pat Mims, 56, executive director of the re-entry center, understands the skepticism many feel about engaging with the political process.

“I had grown up not part of the system at all. I felt that the system was against me and I was against it,” says Mims, who was incarcerated for nearly 21 years for seconddegree murder. “I understand now that it’s important to be part of the system in order to make change.”

He said he would be voting Tuesday in his third election.

Both the re-entry center and the Safe Return Project say they’re nonpartisan, and don’t campaign for specific candidates.

“We’re a community asset, not a political voice,” says Mims.

Still, Bonner has priorities for the election.

“I want candidates looking out for strong schools, because the school-to-prison pipeline is real. I want someone who will fight for rent control because gentrification is a big thing.”

But she says that even though the last election didn’t go the way she desired, she still believed voting was crucial.

“No vote is no voice, and I don’t want anyone else to speak for us.” •

Richmond Recognizes Future Leaders for Their Present Actions

T

oo often, the achievements of young people go unrecognized, but that wasn’t the case during the first-annual “Youth of Honor” event.

Twenty-three young people from all over the Bay Area were honored at the Richmond Police Activities League’s (RPAL) center on Nov. 8, celebrating “every day youth and their mentors in the community.” The event’s cohost was another nonprofit, Courageous and Emerging Leadership Academy (CELA).

The students were acknowledged for their achievements, whether in the classroom, through sports or by serving their communities.

El Cerrito High School freshman Chikala Warden, one of the honorees at the event, said playing basketball at El Cerrito High School and going to church keeps him on track. He also said he is thankful for all the organizations and people who made the event possible because it shows the numerous people who support him.

“What I do is for God and that has helped me continue to always do better,” Warden said.

Caliber Beta Academy seventh grader Isaiah King, another honoree, said he didn’t know why exactly he was being honored because he used to be the one in time-out or get mad when people wouldn’t pass him in the ball when he started playing in the RPAL’s basketball league. Now, he says he’s able to control his anger better.

“I just know I have come a long way. I was a bad boy who was always getting into trouble,” King said. “Through basketball, I was able to learn discipline and that helped with my attitude.”

“They have all dealt with adversity and came out stronger through the other side, and this is a little way for us to say we see you and we see you shining,” she said.

Jacqueline King-Walton, executive director for CELA, said all of the honorees share leadership skills.

“They are the leaders of the future,” she said. “Young people do not get recognized enough for the good things that they are doing”.

King-Walton said the lack of youth recognition led CELA to partner up with other organizations like RPAL, Travis Scott Credit Union, and others to hold the first ever “Youth for Honor” award ceremony.

The award ceremony started off with a song by the Richmond High School Choir. The students were presented with a “certificate of special congressional recognition” from Congressman Mark DeSaulnier’s office and gift bags from Travis Scott Credit Union.

After a dinner, Olympic gold medalist and Contra Costa College alum Eddie Hart gave a keynote address. In his

remarks, he reflected on his time growing up in school, feeling discouraged when his brother, who was very smart, received compliments and he didn’t.

Thankfully, Hart said, God gave him the gift of running fast and it was the medals, awards and acknowledgement that got him involved in track and reinforced his confidence.

“The first time I saw my name in the newspaper, it was like I was seeing them in big lights,” he said. “Because of that (recognition) I was able to focus on my goal. As a result of that, I was able to lay out a plan for my future.”

Hart said that he hopes the young people recognize their worth and continue to do great things.

Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia said the honorees should be lifted up as role models, and the district should publicly recognize young people more often.

“It is important because we need to validate positivity,” he said. “It is shown that when we acknowledge the positive, there are more people that start to do more positive.” •

D

o you know what love, loyalty and dedication is? I’ll tell you.

In 2005, my brother and I reported to Richmond Steelers summer training camp on July 29, and we trained our guys up real hard because, at the time, we were going for our sixth straight state title. Our first game was Aug. 21, and our squad was foaming at the mouth to play.

At 3 a.m. the day of our first game, I got a call: “Lid, Way got shot.”

Almost 10 seconds later, the phone rang again.

“Lid, he gone!”

I had four or five of our players in our living room at the time of the call, and I didn’t want them to know right then that their coach, and my brother, Waleed was killed.

I went to the scene, took the sheet off his

face and there he lay, lifeless.

I left the scene, in complete control of myself because now the hardest job I had to do was to tell my mother. I went to my mother’s house, consoled her for a while, and I remembered I still had Richmond Steeler babies at the house. I get back and told the babies, and they totally lost it.

Check this out: I showered and prepped for the game like I’ve always done.

Long story short, I went and coached the game the same morning my brother was killed because we gave our word that we wouldn’t let nothing interfere with our jobs as coaches, and we expected our players to do the same.

We punished whoever we played that day.

I knew then that they don’t make ‘em like me.

I know I taught that team at least one thing: your word should be bond to your life.

I know what was, and that’s why I understand what is. •

En 2005, mi hermano y yo nos presentamos al campo de entrenamiento de verano de los Richmond Steelers el 29 de julio, y entrenamos muy duro a nuestros muchachos porque, en ese momento, íbamos por nuestro sexto título estatal consecutivo. Nuestro primer juego fue el 21 de agosto, y nuestro equipo estaba ansioso por jugar.

A las 3 a.m. el día de nuestro primer juego, recibí una llamada: “Lid, Way recibió un disparo”.

Casi 10 segundos después, el teléfono volvió a sonar.

“Lid, ¡se ha ido!”

Tenía a cuatro o cinco de nuestros jugadores en nuestra sala en el momento de la llamada, y no quería que supieran en ese momento que su entrenador y mi hermano, Waleed fue asesinado.

Fui a la escena, le quité la sábana de la

cara y allí yació, sin vida.

Abandoné la escena, con total control de mí mismo, porque ahora el trabajo más difícil que tenía que hacer era decírselo a mi madre. Fui a la casa de mi madre, la consolé un rato y recordé que todavía tenía a bebés Richmond Steeler en la casa.

Regresé y les dije a los bebés, y estuvieron totalmente inconsolables.

Mira esto: me bañé y me preparé para el juego como siempre lo he hecho.

En pocas palabras, fui y entrené el juego la misma mañana en que mataron a mi hermano porque dimos nuestra palabra de que no dejaríamos que nada interfiriera con nuestros trabajos como entrenadores, y esperábamos que nuestros jugadores hicieran lo mismo.

Kennedy Sophomore Recognized for Being ‘Hella Powerful’

W

hen Kennedy High School sophomore Jahiem Jones first learned he was going to be recognized as a change-maker in his community by The California Endowment (TCE), he didn’t believe it.

“I got the email, and, at first, I thought it was spam,” Jones said.

But as the trip to Los Angeles grew closer, his mindset evolved.

“My inner thought was more, ‘I won an award. Out of 200 people, I was the top [16].’ So that’s something I definitely cherished,” he said.

Jones and 15 other youths were recognized as “Community Champions” at the TCE Youth Awards on Oct. 21 at the TCE’s Center for Healthy Communities in downtown L.A. Jones is an intern with Richmond’s RYSE Center’s Youth Organizing Team (RYOT) where he is learning about how to be an activist and organizer. He is also a part of the group of community members who gives input on how West County’s school board members can allocate state funds for services to district students.

“He is very active and present in the community,” RYSE Center Youth Organizing Coordinator Diana Diaz said. “He attends school board meetings and every now and then we go to a protest together.”

Diaz met Jones two years ago when she was an intern at the RYSE Center. Since then, she says he’s grown into a community advocate and leader. She nominated Jones for the award because she felt it was time he was recognized on a larger stage. She also accompanied him to the awards ceremony.

“Everyone at RYSE knows that he’s hella powerful and does good work,” Diaz said. “[And] we felt that he deserved this recognition.”

The award show was emceed by the co-presidents

and two board members of the National Women’s March organization: Tamika Mallory, Bob Bland, Carmen Perez, and Linda Sarsour. Other award-winning youth included food justice activists, labor organizers, and a group of students working to abolish random searches in Los Angeles public schools.

For Jones, community organizing includes engaging in the political process to pass Measure H in Richmond, a luxury property tax on parcels valued between $1 to 3 million. The revenue from these taxes is meant to provide funding for Measures E and K, which passed this past June,

as a part of the citywide Kids First Initiative.

“We need this funding so we can help people who have been traumatically impacted by systems of oppression,” Jones said. “This is something that I’ve been striving for and to see it actually coming to pay off is something that’s so [monumental] to me.”
