What the Drought Means for the East Bay

alifornia is in a drought.

Though the Bay Area experienced a few showers to start the month, far more rain is needed to make a dent in the state’s water shortage.

Last year was the driest on record, and on January 17 Governor Jerry Brown made the drought emergency official. On January 31, the Department of Water Resources director released a statement reflecting the dire situation.

“It is our duty to give State Water Project customers a realistic understanding of how much water they will receive from the Project,” Director Mark Cowin said.

“Simply put, there’s not enough water in the system right now for customers to expect any water this season from the project.”

While this decision does not affect residents in Richmond and Oakland, all Californians are feeling the drought. No mandatory conservation measures are yet in place for the East Bay, but continuing dry weather may mean higher water and

food prices for Richmond and Oakland residents.

Abby Figueroa, East Bay Municipal Utility district (EBMUD) spokesperson, said water recycling, heavy rain in 2012, and conservation efforts made by the district and East Bay consumers mean it is in better shape than many other areas in California.

“We have learned lessons from past droughts and we are better prepared for drought than we have ever been,” she said.

EBMUD’s water stores are in more than half full according to Figueroa. If the drought continues, for the first time EBMUD has the option of tapping into the Sacramento River through a new facility called Freeport. “Freeport has been more than a generation in the making,” she added.

Though EBMUD is entitled to 133,000 acre-feet of water from this source, Figueroa said the agency expects a “significantly smaller allocation based on current reservoir levels upstream.” The federal Bureau of Reclamation, which is responsible for these water contracts, delayed announcing water allocations until late February.

Richmond Residents React to New Fees for Paper Bags

wo weeks after its January 1 implementation, Richmond’s SingleUse Bag Ordinance is earning mixed reactions from residents. Chief among the responses are grievances about the 5-cent fee for paper bags.

Kelvin Payne has lived in Richmond for 8 years. He says it’s unfair to charge a customer after they have already spent money paying for items from the store.

“I agree that it has environmental benefits, but the cost seems unnecessary,” he says.

Another resident, Bula Newsome, agrees.

“I think it’s ridiculous. We’re buying groceries from their store. We should get our bags for free,” says Newsome. She plans to use a cart to carry her groceries to her car rather than paying the 5-cent fee.

The new ordinance prohibits the distribution of plastic bags in all retail establishments except restaurants, and requires retailers to charge a minimum fee of 5 cents for each paper bag. Retailers face a fine of up to $1,000 for incompliance.

The ordinance also states that the fee will increase to 10 cents after two years, in an effort to encourage people to use reusable bags instead.

While Richmond joins 90 other cities and counties across California in banning the distribution of plastic bags, it is the first city in Contra Costa County to enact such a law. Neighboring San Francisco and Alameda Counties already have ordinances in place.

Despite the general disappointment about the extra cost, some shoppers are

encouraged by the city’s emphasis on environmental sustainability.

Curtis Reece, 51, brought his own bag to go grocery shopping. “I think it’s worth trying.

People will get acclimated to it,” he says.

Others expressed concern that the change was not widely communicated to residents.

Richmond Councilmember Jovanka Beckles explained that the 5-cent fee would go to the stores to cover the cost of paper bags. Beckles, who voted in favor of the ordinance, agrees that some stores did not effectively inform their customers of the coming changes.

“The city of Richmond did what we could to remind people that it’s new and going into effect January 1,” she says.

The city council had previously considered charging 25 cents per paper bag to deter shoppers from buying them. The fee was lowered to 5 cents after the council decided to make the fee more reasonable.

Unlike the similar ordinance in San Francisco, food stamp participants will not be exempt from the 5-cent bag fee.

Beckles says that financial circumstances, however, should not be an issue. She thinks that a change in habits, especially making use of reusable bags, is key to adjusting to the new law.

“We want to see Richmond cleaned up for our children,” says Beckles.

In order to ease the transition, Foods Co. on Macdonald Avenue is offering a free reusable bag for every $25 spent. The city has also given out over 12,000 free reusable bags at various community events.

Richmond Takes Step Toward Upping Minimum Wage

ichmond is one step closer to giving residents a chance to vote on increasing the city’s minimum wage.

The City Council approved a resolution last month to direct staff to draft three potential ballot measures for minimum wage hikes of $11, $12.30 or $15.

A report will come back to the council within 60 days. If the council approves one of the rates, the proposed hike will be placed on the Nov. 4 general election ballot.

“We have a lot of people living in Richmond that are at poverty level because the current minimum wage is not enough to sustain them,” said Jovanka Beckles, who sponsored the resolution. Beckles was also unanimously elected vice mayor for 2014 earlier in the meeting.

Richmond’s resolution will exempt employers with fewer than 10 employees and those operating less than two years in Richmond with fewer than 26 workers.

The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 and the state rate is $8. The state hourly wage is set to increase to $9 in July and $10 in 2016.

Berkeley is also considering a wage increase and San Francisco’s minimum wage jumped to $10.74 on New Years Day, making it the highest in the region. San Jose follows at $10.15.

“Richmond can be a leader in this as it is in many other progressive causes,” said Richmond resident Marilyn Langlois. “The

more cities that do this, that will push the state and the federal governments and give it more momentum to raise the wage to a level that it really should be.”

While many spoke in favor of the resolution, some fear business owners will drive up the costs of goods and services as a result of paying higher wages and force customers to shop in neighboring cities.

Don Gosney said city officials should push harder for a statewide minimum wage.

“This is not about raising the minimum rage, it’s about raising the minimum wage in Richmond,” Gosney said.

“We have to know they will pass along these costs to the consumer. Unlike San Francisco we have options on where to spend our money, we can go right next door to San Pablo or El Cerrito.”

Officials with both the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the Council of Industries of West Contra Costa County have

expressed concerns about the business community being excluded and initially unaware the city was considering a possible minimum wage increase.

Beckles says this is the “beginning of the conversation” and city officials have ample time to meet with residents, business owners and stakeholders. •

Celebrate Black History Month

elebrated in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, Black History Month is an important annual commemoration of African American history and people.

It began in 1926 with historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, who wanted to encourage the study of the lives, the culture, and the events of the African diaspora.

Originally known as Black History Week, it was celebrated in the second week of February to recognize the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas.

In 1976 the United States government officially recognized Black History Month as part of the Bicentennial celebration.

Churches, schools, and organizations celebrate the month of February with various events, making this a joyous month for African Americans. The question is – why just February? Every

year I hear someone ask this question.

We must do better. After the events and speeches end, things go back to normal.

Many other ethnic groups have, for example, weekend classes that educate their youth on the culture, language, and history of their ancestors year-round. We need to do more of the same.

Black Voice News publisher Hardy Brown once wrote, “There is a saying that we say all the time when we as a people want to make a point of importance: ‘If you don’t know your history you are doomed to repeat it.’” I encourage us all to learn the history of our ancestors through the ages.

I intend to celebrate Black history all year long by incorporating facts from African American history in the United States and Richmond into my future columns. I hope that you’ll find ways of your own to celebrate all year as well. •

he Teen Services Division of the Richmond Public Library presents the Black History Month, documentary premiere of, “What Mama Didn’t Say: A Dialogue About African American Sexuality.” With a primary focus on the issue of teen pregnancy, the documentary examines the disproportionate number of African American teens having children and raising families, out-of-wedlock. Cast members of the film include Richmond and Bay Area natives that were teen parents and chronicles their lives , and interpersonal experiences involving sexuality. Other cast members include psychologists, public health professionals, pastors, and youth advocates, including the Executive Producer, Dr. Betty Burrus Wright. After the screening, there will be a Question and Answer Discussion of the topics discussed by the cast and the film’s Producer/Director, Doug Harris.

W

hat vision was set before you?

In African customs and traditions before the Europeans colonized us, our ancestors gave names to their children that held value. Names not only represented one’s identity but also a promise, a vision, and expectations for that child to follow as they grew in life. The process of naming a child varied throughout the many African clans and tribes. After our ancestors were kidnapped and enslaved here in the New World (North America), however, they were not allowed to name their children – that became the task of the slave master.

In some cases, names were given on the slave ship, and some slaves were even named after the very ship that had taken them from Africa. One such case was of Phillis Wheatley, a poet and author, whose first name was that of the slave ship that brought her from Senegal to Boston. Her last name was the same as the salve master who purchased her, John Wheatley.

In the 1977 film “Roots” by Alex Haley, there is a heart-wrenching scene where the protagonist, Kunta Kinte, is hanging with his hands tied while being forcibly whipped by another slave, James, in the middle of the plantation for all the other slaves to witness. Before each lash, the slave master asks Kunta, “What’s your name?” Then the slave master, for all to hear, says, “When the master gives you something, you take it. He gave you a name. It’s a nice name.

It wasn’t until after the Civil War, that our ancestors were again able to name themselves and their children without repercussion.

In 2014, I question whether the shackles of slavery ever fully came off. Yes, physically they have, but mentally I have doubts. It appears we suffer from PTSD -Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder. Part of this logic can be heard in the nicknames we apply to ourselves in the hood.

As I was walking from class last semester, I witnessed a beautiful sister with her son, who couldn’t have been more than four years old. As she sat with her son, another young man walked by and nearly collided with the young boy as he passed by. The young man and the child made eye contact, before the young man said to the four yearold, “Hey young pimp, my bad,” in a joking tone. The child replied with an innocent smile, while the mother also smiled and motioned for her son to come near. That

moment instantly brought me back to my own childhood growing up in the ghetto of Richmond where I, my family, and many of my peers bore nicknames similar to what was spoken to that four year-old.

Nicknames are synonymous to labels -- labels that say either who we are or what we do, if not both. I know we give nicknames with innocent intentions, but I don’t believe we are fully aware of the psychological impact those nicknames can have, especially on children.

We must not be enablers of our illness and then be surprised years later when that illness has spread and then go looking for a panacea pill. For example, calling a young boy “killa” because he may be more aggressive then the other kids or “playa” because his biological make-up makes him attractive, can feed the sub-conscious mind to where eventually this young boy who is now a teen unconsciously absorbs the label that has been tagged on him growing up. He’s been hearing how “bad” he is, so by right he acts in a bad manner; or he’s been hearing how much of a “playa” he is,

so he looks to have his way with the ladies.

He becomes not merely a product of his environment, but of the expectations of those around him. This goes for our young girls as well, who get told how beautiful they are, not because of inner beauty but again because of their biological structure, how they are shaped, skin tone, etc.

What is the image we want to project as African people moving forward? Do we really want our children to be playa’s, pimps, gangsta’s, ho’s and b****? How about we replace such labels with others – “young scholar,” “young prince or princess,” or “King or Queen.” Instead of saying “young pimp,” it could be “young Garvey,” or “little Harriet Tubman” or “little Assata,” so they can become empowered and inspired when they later learn who these people were and what they meant to the struggle. It is said that life is a stage and we are all actors. If such a philosophy is true, then what role are we playing, and who provided the script? To my people that hold greatness: let us be just that, in not only our minds but also our actions. •

Q&A: Reverend Michael McBride on the Drop in Bay Area Homicides Q&A • Dr. Joseph Marshall, Street Soldiers Radio

DITOR’S NOTE: The following conversation took place on Street Soldiers Radio between Dr. Joseph Marshall, co-founder and executive director of the San Francisco-based violence prevention program Alive & Free, and Reverend Michael McBride of The Way Christian Center in West Berkeley. Reverend McBride is the director of the Lifelines to Healing Campaign, a project of the PICO National Network. The campaign is committed to addressing gun violence and mass incarceration of young people of color.

Dr. Marshall: In 2013 there was a drop in homicides in Oakland, San Francisco, Richmond, even down in San Jose, [and] in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago – from your perspective what do you think is going on here?

Rev. McBride: I’ll certainly say it’s a confluence of a number of different things, primary of which is people’s desire to stay alive and free. The choices that people are beginning to make. A lot of our loved ones and family members who are caught in these cycles of violence and poverty and exposed to nothing but tools of death … I think with the right focus and the right path and opportunity a lot of our young men are deciding to live and to solve their conflicts without resorting to lethal violence.

I think the credit has to go, at the beginning of this conversation, to every single young person that has decided to put down their gun and say, “I want to live another day.”

And then after that I think the credit and the responsibility must go to all those folks who are leading organizations and movements to actually partner with the young folks and their families in these communities to make sure that their desire to live is matched with the resources, tools, with healing and all the different mechanisms that pretty

Michael McBride much every human being across the world has access to if they are living in healthy communities that produce life and not death.

Dr. M: The experts don’t have an explanation for these trends and we’ve seen these drops before.

What do think it will take to continue this drop in homicides locally and throughout the country?

Rev. M: I’m convinced that all the violence that is related to guns and homicide is continuously connected to a small number of folks in very focused communities and neighborhoods; many are characterized by poverty, lack of opportunity, and the proliferation of illegal weapons. So when we talk about homicides we can’t ignore the strategies that are being used to target these individuals who are most likely to commit a shooting or be shot. These strategies are continuously being shown by studies to indeed create a lot of reductions.

Now how do we sustain these reductions? Certainly our assumption in our Lifelines campaign in cities like Oakland, Richmond, Stockton, Detroit, Camden, Baton Rouge, places where we’re on the ground and actively working, we believe the way is to continue to invest in these strategies that get closer to the young people that are driving these acts of violence, and make sure we are

building an infrastructure of support and opportunity all around them.

If we invest in people and strategies that actually build them up and cut them off before they make the worst decision that they possibly can, then I believe we can have these sustained reductions and even go deeper. Whether it’s the Ceasefire strategy or doing street outreach, or bringing Alive & Free trainings into cities like Camden and Berkeley and Detroit. Whether it’s walking neighborhoods in the evenings or going into jails and prisons, we have to keep doing all of it. The silver bullet is collaboration. It’s the Youth Uprising and the Street Soldiers programs that are doing gun buy backs. It’s Zack Carey and the Soldiers Against Violence Everywhere that are doing peace stand ins. It’s the city team ministries and OCO and PICO folks that are doing night walks. It’s the call ins. It’s law enforcement making a better effort to not racial profile but target those who are at the highest risk of shooting and being shot and providing opportunities from community.

It’s all of it together. If we can commit ourselves to working together over a sustained period of time we will see the reduction.

recently had the privilege of watching the new movie, “12 Years a Slave,” which is based on a memoir by Solomon Northup.

Northup was born in 1808 in Saratoga, New York as a free Black man.

His book tells the story of his capture by slave traders in 1841 and the ensuing long hard years he spent transitioning from a free life to that of a slave.

He was a father, a husband, and a well-respected man in the north. One of his many skills was playing the fiddle, which benefited him in many ways throughout the movie. Solomon Northup was a survivor. He never lost his identity, though slave masters, overseers, and even other slaves told him to forget his past. In one scene, an overseer beats him brutally just for uttering his real name and proclaiming that he was a free man. Even after his back was stripped of its skin, he still stood tall.

As I sat in the movie theater watching amazing actors and actresses depict my ancestors and their many hardships, all I could do was cry. From the stripping of names, to the stripping of skin, to the breaking of families, I truly cannot understand why people choose to forget about this part of history. Maybe some choose to forget because it is such a harsh reality. Most often we are told that slavery is where Black history begins -not that we were Kings and Queens with unshackled feet, long before we were stripped of our land and freedoms. This movie is a reminder that my ancestors were not submissive, but warriors who knew that it would one day get better. I hope, in my own life, to internalize their

strength and greatness.

The film is far from comfortable -- the brutality and the unbelievable mental and physical abuse is no happy sight. Director Steve McQueen unapologetically displays the inhumanity of slavery.

My mind was blown by hearing the words and phrases used by the slaveholders, and how they were not unfamiliar to me: “nigga,” “stop crying before I give you a reason to cry,” and “light skin is better than dark skin.” I find it scary that these words are still spoken. I find it scary that we have internalized these terms, and now use them to refer to one another. In one scene, another slave, Patsy, is getting whipped when the master asks Solomon to do it. He doesn’t want to, but Patsy says, “I rather it be you, Solomon.” As a people, I wonder if we have gotten used to hurting one another?

In another scene, Solomon is hanging from a tree with a noose around his neck and his feet barely touching the ground.

People walk around him, and even children play. Only one girl gives him water. To see Black people so numb to slavery and its brutality made my stomach turn. It reminded me of how Black boys die on the streets and no one mourns unless the media makes a big deal of it.

And the hand that killed him probably looked similar to his. I think in the Black community we have a lot of self-hate.

Although “12 Years a Slave” is hard to watch at times, it is a must see for people of all ages. As a 16-year-old, I was enlightened by the truth in this film, and I encourage all young folks to see it. Yes, it’s sad, but we need to see what our ancestors went through, so we can make sure that their blood was not shed in vain; that we do not repeat the very crimes against each other that our ancestors once endured at the hands of others. •

an you form a new habit in 30 days? That’s what some community members are trying to do this February, and the new habit they want to implement is quite simple: drink water and nothing else,

for an entire month.

Now in its second year, the “Be Smarter, Drink Water Campaign” is a partnership between non-profits, health experts, The California Endowment, and city and county government. As part of the campaign, local residents are being invited to participate in a month-long challenge where they will only drink water for 30 days. The whole point is for Richmond residents to feel better, be healthier, lose weight and save money. The 30-day drink water challenge comes on the heels of a 10-week health education training conducted by Lifelong Brookside, a local health provider.

Throughout the year, YES Nature to Neighborhoods, a local non-profit, will train a cohort of “wellness navigators” – a multicultural and multilingual group of residents who will assume the role of health promoters for their community. That work started with having the navigators look at their own habits and lifestyle choices.

YES held a workshop for participants at the Nevin Center on Feb.1 to kick things off.

Debra Skeaton from East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) and Tanya Rovira from Contra Costa Health Services presented on the safety of drinking tap water, and the health benefits associated with doing so.

During lunch, the group of eight was taken to a local grocery, Foods Co, to get “fired up about drinking water and advocating for the use of tap water in the community,” said Eric Aaholm, executive director at YES. The group “loaded up” shopping carts with all the beverages (with the exception of coffees and teas) they would normally buy for their household over the course of a month, to get a better picture of how many calories they would be giving up, and how much money they would be saving.

“We had one participant that bought Coca Cola, Capri Sun, a big bag of sugar for their Kool-Aid… We have someone spending about $38 a month on beverages, and calorie-wise it was coming out to 4 to

5 thousand calories a month,” said Tana Monteiro, YES’s community wellness coordinator. “I don’t think they were really thinking about that.”

Monteiro said the idea of a 30-day waterdrinking challenge came from watching a friend of hers that needed to lose a lot of weight. “It was hard for her to diet, so she chose to just drink water and none of the other beverages, and walk every day. She lost 150 pounds. I started to talk with the other wellness navigators about that because I know a lot of us wanted to lose weight and get more exercise and be healthier, and this was something pretty simple that we could do.”

Those taking the challenge are given calendars that will allow them to track their progress over the course of the month. At the end of February, everyone will be able to see how much money they saved, and how much weight they lost. That information, said Aaholm, will be used as a motivation for the navigators to go into four schools and two other community sites where the group will be installing water “hydration stations” over the next 6 months.

Even though the challenge is only 30 days, it will still be tough to achieve, said Monteiro, so each participant will be paired up with an “accountability buddy” who can offer encouragement and support throughout the process.

“We talked about how you (participants) might be getting a headache in the first week, [due to lack of] caffeine from [not] having your Coca Cola. I’m going to encourage check-ins everyday... the same way as if you’re trying to stop [using] cigarettes or alcohol or anything else that is addicting. Sugar is addicting.”

Nicole Satterfield, a mother of two, has been living in Richmond for 5 years, and is one of the YES wellness navigators. A health condition made her change her diet about two months ago, and drinking more water became a key aspect of her health regimen.

Satterfield said the kick off event at Foods Co really had an impact. “It really puts things in perspective… how much sugar you’re really [consuming] with your drinks.

You’re drinking 10 glasses of something a day... so why not make it water?”

“The hardest part will be passing up the juice because I do buy juices with low sugar for my kids,” she added. “I can’t just totally rip everything from them.”

Ahora en su segundo año, la campaña “Be Smarter, Drink Water” (sea más inteligente, beba agua) es una asociación entre organizaciones no lucrativas, expertos en salud, The California Endowment y el gobierno de la ciudad y del condado. Q&A: Richmond Gospel Legend Dorothy Morrison on Music, Faith and Home Interview • Malcolm Marshall

DITOR’S NOTE: Singer Dorothy Combs Morrison Henry, 69, was born in Longview, Texas and raised in Richmond, CA, a city she still frequents. Morrison found fame as the lead vocalist on the 1969 hit song, “Oh Happy Day,” by the Edwin Hawkins Singers. The song went on to become a gospel standard and has been re-recorded by many artists. She recently spoke to Richmond Pulse publisher Malcolm Marshall about her life in music, the role of faith, and her love for Richmond.

Richmond Pulse: How did singing and recording “Oh Happy Day” change your life?

Dorothy Morrison: When I recorded that song in 1969 with the Edwin Hawkins Singers, it changed my life [in] that I got a chance to sing to the world about God and how he can wash your sins away. I’ve been in church all my life.

My parents had their own church and so I’m considered a “PK kid,” a Preacher’s Kid. So I always did sing. My family, we all grew up singing. There are ten of us. So I’ve always wanted to sing about how good God is and I finally got a chance to sing.

Edwin Hawkins asked me if I would like to sing in the choir so that’s how I got in. He told me he had a song for me and the title was, “Oh Happy Day.” And he said, “Now I need you to get some verses.” So I went home [and] talked to my brothers – Jerry Combs who is now deceased, and my brother Bill Combs – and I asked them for verses … but the verses that they gave me were like preaching. I didn’t want to go there because it was forbidden in the Church of God in Christ for women to preach. They can be called teachers but not preachers. So I didn’t want to do any preaching. On the way [to the recording session], my husband at the time, Mr. Isadore Morrison, said, “Why don’t you just say, ‘When I get to heaven I’m going to jump and shout, be nobody there to put me out.’” So I used that. I wrote that down on my hand and when I got to the recording session, I read it off my hand … We put it together and that’s how “Oh Happy Day” was born on the stage in Berkeley at the old Ephesian Church of God in Christ that was pastored by Tramaine Hawkins’s grandfather, Reverend E.E. Cleveland.

RP: What was it like growing up in a musical family?

DM: Oh, awesome, awesome. I mean, because there was singing, music, going on every day… When we got up in the morning, the music was on. My brothers would turn on the gospel music as we cleaned the house, as we washed

The music was on from morning until night… So we were kind of saturated by music, and at that time it was Claude Jeter and the Swan Silvertones, and Shirley Caesar and Inez Andrews… It (the music) just kind of stuck in our subconscious minds.

open-heart operations. The singers put it out there, where we can relate to it. Martin Luther King, you know, he tried to share it with people whether they received it or not. We got it … I got it. And so it means a lot to me to celebrate and be reminded of our heritage and the culture that we come from.

RP: Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why?

RP: What is your connection to the City of Richmond?

DM: Aretha Franklin, Mahalia Jackson, and Bessie Griffin.

Those are the three ladies that I would say were my role models, my statues of a lady singing. And I admire how, when they sang, they would give their all. They didn’t hold back … You would feel it. So that’s why I always wanted to sing like Mahalia Jackson and those people. I wanted to sing songs that I could feel and I wouldn’t sing anything I couldn’t feel.

DM: When I came from Texas I was five months old… so Richmond is my home. I love Richmond. I’m now in Sacramento but I still come to Richmond as much as I can; every other weekend I’m in Richmond, just because it means a lot to me. As I go through the different streets, it brings back memories of different points in my life. I went through kindergarten there, I went through high school there, I went to college there. My home church is still there.

A lot of my family members were buried in Richmond; our burial plot is in Richmond. We’re from Richmond; we represent Richmond. The Combs Family is known in Richmond. We got to sing at everybody’s celebrations [and] home-goings.

RP: February is Black History Month. Does this month hold some significance for you?

DM: That’s the month that we celebrate the black role models that have went forth before us, that have plowed the ground and made the foundation for different things.

Raw Talent’s Second Verse News Report • Edgardo Cervano-Soto

rowing up in North Richmond, Donte Clark, like many residents, relied on corner stores for groceries. The small “mom and pop” shops were a lifeline for many.

“A lot of us grew up on convenience stores -- the food they brought, the social life,” says Clark.

“The stores represent the heart of the community, where you get your information and hear people’s stories.”

It is a corner store just like the one described by Clark that is the setting of Clark’s newest play, “Po’ Boys Kitchen,” being produced and performed by local spoken word and acting troupe, RAW Talent. The play provides a commentary on modern-day Richmond through the perspectives of characters that pass through the convenience store, one of the last Black-owned businesses in Richmond.

Key characters such as the owner of Po’ Boys Kitchen, OG Hodge, recurring visitors like Hobo Jo, as well as Sabrina and Taylor, two youth employed at the store, anchor the play. As we’ve come to expect from Clark’s work, “Po’ Boys Kitchen” packs a sublime political punch that Clark knows will resonate with Richmond residents.

“For Black folks in Richmond particularly, it’s about the [loss of] Black businesses,” says Clark. “The play does cherish the memories of ‘back then’ but it also makes the statement [that] we have the right to ownership, now.”

“Po’ Boys Kitchen” is Clark’s follow up to his previous work, “Te’s Harmony.” Last year, RAW Talent performed the adaptation of Romeo and Juliet to sold-out audiences at the El Cerrito Performing Arts Center. The success of “Te’s Harmony” signaled a new path for RAW Talent – the group began as a schools-based spoken word group -toward more stage productions.

The premiere of “Po’ Boys Kitchen” also comes at a critical time for RAW Talent as an organization. Under the direction of co-founders Molly Raynor and Donte Clark, the group has evolved from its beginnings as an afterschool program administered through the Making Waves Academy, to become an independent art company supported by the non-profit RYSE Center, which now acts as its fiscal sponsor.

The transition has allowed RAW Talent to refocus its efforts, resulting in the elimination of photography, dance, visual art and jewelry design classes. The scaling back has allowed the group to put their energies into their core mediums – spoken word and theatrical productions.

The move isn’t without its challenges: RAW Talent is now responsible for its own fundraising and staff management – new things for a group that had previously only been responsible for creative programming. Yet, says Molly Raynor, the transition has only served to strengthen the

artistry of the RAW Talent members.

“We have been able to concentrate on what we do best.

Spoken word is the one thing I haven’t seen in Richmond. So combining theater and spoken word allows the core group to take their abilities to the next level,” she says. “We used to be about slams and that was mainly for competitions.

Building towards a play is more of a communal effort.”

The financial challenges for a young company are daunting, but RAW Talent is counting on the support of the Richmond community, and the drive of RAW Talent’s core members. “The change is forcing RAW Talent to really fight for the art we believe in. We have to be the head and muscle. It’s challenged me to step up,” says Clark, who is now the group’s artistic director.

DeAndre Evans is one of the artists who has blossomed under the guidance of Clark and Raynor. After playing secondary roles in “Pen to the Page” and “Te’s Harmony,” Evans took the lead role of OG Hodge in “Po’ Boys Kitchen.”

Clark personally asked Evans to play the role.

“Playing OG Hodge has made me break out of my shell,” says Evans. “I don’t know many Black storeowners, so I had to create him. At this point I’m experimenting with his

lines and exploring his dry sense of humor.”

The idea of having thriving Black-owned businesses in Richmond is worth discussing, says Clark. “Not many people know Richmond was a home to jazz,” he says. “It’s where James Brown performed. We had businesses on MacDonald and Cutting. But all of that was taken away.”

Clark says the play will touch on Black migration from the South to Richmond during World War II, the effects of disinvestment and white flight on Black businesses, and today’s disaffected youth. “’Po’ Boys Kitchen’ is a monument of memories, reminding people of our potential.”

Residents might notice a different smell or taste to water sourced from the Sacramento, Figueroa said, but wanted to assure customers that the water will still meet all California public health and EPA standards.

If the water district does decide to tap this source, average single-family residential customers can expect to see their bimonthly bill go up by $12. A rate increase of $4 per month is already scheduled for July 1.

The cost of food, especially meat products, may also go up. Betty Walker, executive director of the Contra Costa Farm Bureau, said that livestock farmers have already been contending with the high price and scarcity of hay, many of them opting to thin their herds. “Cattle prices are way up, I expect that would have to be passed onto consumer,” Walker said.

Doria Robinson, executive director of Urban Tilth, an organization dedicated to agriculture in Richmond, said it is putting in drip water systems and looking at greywater use as a way to get through the drought. Robinson isn’t sure what will happen with urban agriculture projects like school gardens.

“Food crops just need water,” she said.

“Water shortage emergencies are usually declared in May by the [EBMUD] board of directors,” said Figueroa. “However, because this year is so dry, that declaration, a decision to tap the Sacramento River supplies, or a call for increased conservation may occur sooner.

Figueroa said that the board will discuss voluntary water cutbacks at its next meeting on February 11. The board meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month, and the public is welcome to come and receive water supply updates.

EBMUD’s website also has up-to-date supply and rate information.

For residents interested in learning more about greywater use, Greywater Action is holding a greywater design and installation workshop in Richmond on March 22.

Conservation tips from EBMUD Find and fix leaks. Toilets are a common culprit of indoor leaks. Sprinklers and irrigation equipment are a common source of outdoor leaks.

Review outdoor water use. This is a good time of year to consider a more sustainable landscape. Also, we’ve noted an uptick in outdoor water use this winter, probably due to the warmer weather. However, nights are still cool and many plants are dormant this time of year. Customers in the East Bay should continue their winter irrigation schedules, despite the higher daytime temperatures.

Upgrade appliances and plumbing fixtures to more water efficient models.

Conservation tips from Urban Tilth Use drip irrigation.

Use a thick layer of mulch over irrigation and around plants to keep water from evaporating.

Recycle water. Bring a bucket in the shower with you, or reuse bath and dishwater to irrigate your garden. Note: make sure you are using biodegradable soap, and pour this water into the soil around the plant rather than on the leaves.

Put up a windbreak to decrease plant dehydration.

We were coming from a rehearsal and all of a sudden – I don’t know what happened, somebody else was driving – we got hit by a train. So that was my most trying day in Richmond. And of course, I said, “Oh Lord help us.” And he did help us you know – I didn’t get a scratch on me, but it was a scary moment for me. I guess the best day was when I heard “Oh Happy Day” on the radio, playing every hour on the hour. And everybody said, “That’s Dorothy Morrison.”

That was one of the best days… I have one child; her name is Kimberly Morrison, and when she was born, that also was one of my best days.

RP: What advice do you have for the young people in the community?

DM: The advice I have for them is to find a church and get to know Christ for themselves, because everywhere you go it’s getting rough… If you don’t know Christ, you will kind of be left behind. I advise the young people, “It’s okay to live in Richmond, but be a role model” – be a role model so the other little kids that are coming can see what [the young people] are doing and follow them. Just like I left a legacy in Richmond – I left “Oh Happy Day.” Richmond is proud of that. “Oh Happy Day” came from their land, and when I go overseas -- I just got back from Switzerland and I’m getting ready to go to Malaysia -- when I sing, I tell people I’m from Richmond, California. I let it be known that’s where I’m from, and I want other young people to [become] role models so that they can also be happy that they came from Richmond. I still love Richmond, even North Richmond. I still love it. •

Maria Masedo, a diabetic, has lived in Richmond since 1989 when she and her husband moved from Oakland. She said she doesn’t drink soda or juices and is already used to drinking water, but she decided to take the challenge anyway because she wants “to lose weight and… stay healthy.”

She said it can also only help with her diabetes.

By taking part in the challenge, Masedo also hopes she can be an inspiration to her family.

“My son is addicted to sweet drinks like Tampico juice, orange juice, Gatorade and things like that. When he sees the specials at the stores, he buys a lot. My daughter is 15 years old. She loves Coca Cola -- any kind of juice or water with sugar, she loves it. I’m trying to keep away from that. I try to teach my grandson not to drink sodas and sugary drinks. I hope he will follow me in the future.” •

n 1982, Eddie Solis opened Solis Martial Arts in San Pablo, which has over the years provided hundreds of children and families living in the Richmond and San Pablo communities with martial arts training.

Now, Solis’s son James, who is the current executive director, has converted the martial arts school to a community center.

The school will now be called 23HQ x Solis, and will provide community events and immigration services in addition to already existing arts and expression classes, fitness and health instruction, and leadership training. The center has also become a space for Zumba, hip hop dancers, and gymnastics.

“For the past two years I have been creating relationships with the families that have come to Solis Martial Arts,” says James Solis. “In that time I found out that a majority of our students came from broken and single-parent homes. So I created 23HQ as a community hub to help our students, their families and the larger community.”

James Solis’ larger goal is to create community leaders for the cities of Richmond and San Pablo. Richmond youth Roxanne Alejandre attended the center’s grand reopening and said, “It was very impressive that after almost 40 years of Solis Martial Arts being in our community, James Solis has made it into a community hub. It’s not for just karate anymore.”

The new 23HQ is located at 1169 23rd Street in San Pablo. •

ebruary is Black History Month, the shortest month of the year, but nevertheless a month where African Americans can celebrate the history and successes of other African Americans, past and present. Yet even today, our k-12 public schools seem intent on keeping Black history to a minimum.

During my own high school years in Richmond, California, I was aware of my people’s history, but nowhere near as knowledgeable as I am now that I attend a historically Black college, Fisk University, in Nashville, Tennessee. Here the South, the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement, it seems there is Black history on every corner – almost every building has some story behind it. Fisk University, established in 1865, was itself the first institution of higher learning for African Americans. Jubilee Hall, which is now a campus dorm for freshman girls, was the South’s first permanent structure built to educate Black students.

But one doesn’t need to be in the South to be surrounded by Black history. It is all around us, although most remain blind to

the facts. Every time we eat peanut butter, for example, we have George Washington Carver, an African-American, scientist, and inventor, to thank for it. Every time we turn on the heat or air-conditioning, we have David Nelson Crosthwait, Jr., an AfricanAmerican, engineer, and journalist, to thank for it. Every time a woman chooses to use birth control pills, they have Percy Julian, an African-American chemical synthesis pioneer to thank for it. And of course, every time us ladies get our hair straightened or curled, and our scalps greased, we should know that it all started with Madam C.J. Walker, the first AfricanAmerican woman to become a self-made millionaire, by selling her hair products and inventing the hot comb.

Understanding Black history should be essential to our everyday lives as African Americans. As a people, we need to know where we came from and use that knowledge as motivation to be great – to rise above the common judgments of those who believe we are of less worth than other people and cultures that the official versions of history have deemed ”great.” As Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African American female astronaut, once said, “Never be limited by other people’s limited imaginations.” Our history is everywhere, and it is everything. •

From the green of the trees where
