A familiar face–And our new delegate The Friends of Lee Ware includes numerous men and women in the 65th House District who have known Delegate Lee Ware for nearly three decades. We welcome newcomers to our community, and we want you to “meet your delegate” who so ably represents us in the Virginia General Assembly. Lee Ware is completing his seventh term in the House of Delegates from the 65th District, which now includes Goochland County precincts for Fife (101), Hadensville (102), Sandy Hook (202), and Three Square, as well as part of the Goochland Court House precinct (301), and also the Columbia (201) and Fork Union (301) precincts of Fluvanna County, all of Powhatan County, and several precincts of western Chesterfield. He is a candidate for re-election this year. Lee brings a refreshing deliberation to what he describes as “the challenge to balance all interests” on each major policy issue that comes before the House of Delegates. For example, during the stock-market boom in the late 1990s, Lee was one of the few legislators who warned that state spending was dangerously outstripping the private economy’s ability to sustain a mushrooming governmental budget. This concern, arising from his Jeffersonian conviction that, “that government is best which governs least,” prompted Lee to cast a series of dissenting votes against excessively expensive budget bills, including bills advanced by his own party. (Lee is a Republican.) However, Lee is by no means a reflexive “anti-tax” legislator. More accurately, he strives to be “anti-waste” in the expenditure of our taxpayers’ dollars. More accurately still, he strives to be “proefficiency” in both the use of taxpayers’ monies and in the execution of governmental programs. Principled Leadership Lee’s attempt to balance all interests on major issues that come before the legislature is reflected in his thesis that increases in funding requested by any one constituency must be balanced against the hard realities of the well-being of the privatesector economy. Always he weighs the individual or corporate taxpayer’s ability to assume a larger contribution to the public good through increased taxes. Fulfilling state government’s responsibilities to public education is one of what Lee describes as the “three core responsibilities of our state government,” the other two being public safety and transportation. “Accomplishing these objectives is difficult enough in times of robust economic growth; during the current recession, the challenge to achieve a balance
among competing interests is all the more demanding—and necessary,” he believes. The deliberation, balance, and collegial spirit that Lee Ware brings to the legislature is reflected in praise for his work from leaders of both major political parties—and also from the only two Independent members of the House, each of whom has enthusiastically endorsed Lee’s return to the legislature. To Lee Ware, Virginia is, indeed, a Commonwealth. For example, the Speaker of the House, Delegate William J. Howell of Stafford, remarks, “It is an honor to serve with Lee in the House of Delegates. His measured and thoughtful approach to those issues most important to the people of the 65th District produces valuable insights and important achievements. Lee’s dedication to conservative principles and his effective leadership make him an invaluable member of the House.”
Helping Constituents Just as important, though the legislature is very much part-time for Virginians, Lee makes himself available to his constituents. He has helped numerous individuals to navigate state agencies, and he intervenes to smooth the provision of public services. He is always out and about at public events, and he works closely with locally elected officials.
