C OACHING STAFF Mike Henderson Head Coach This year will mark Head Coach Mike Hendersonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 14th year as the leader of the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot varsity football team. Henderson led the Knights to three state championships in 2003, 2004 and 2009 and saw his team go all the way to the state finals in 2005 and 2008. After playing football in high school (in Pittsburgh, Pa.) and college (for the University of Richmond) Henderson served two years as an assistant coach at Douglas Freeman before coming to Powhatan. He now lives here with his wife Kristy, the girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; athletic director at BSH, and their three children, Katie, 9, Faith, 6 and Matt, 3.

Offensive Line/ Co-Defensive Line Coach Returning for his sixth year on the coaching staff at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot, Fritts will be handling the offensive and defensive line duties. Fritts, now a science teacher at BSH, was captain of the football team at Douglas Freeman High School, where he earned All-District, All-Region and All-Metro honors. He played at Robert Morris University, where he was a member of two national championship teams.

Blake Derby Co-Defensive Coordinator Quarterback Coach 2010 marks Blake Derby's third year as a member of the BSH coaching staff. After playing for the Knights, Derby played college football at Shenandoah, where he started at quarterback his senior year.

S eason preview

Knights’ experience may be biggest asset By Richard Carrier Contributing Writer

With 18 out of 24 positions filled by experienced players, the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot football team will open their season at home against Kenston Forest on August 27. The Virginia Independent Schools defending State Champions are “a big, strong, powerful team with overall good team speed and incredible speed on defense,” according to Head Coach Mike Henderson. The opposition must, first of all, game-plan to stop the incredible backfield tandem of Deon Watts and John Moore, a duo their coach labeled the “two best players in the Conference. We’ve never been this strong at runningback.” Opponents will then have to contend with the fastest player the Knights have ever put on the field: wide-out Marquis Smith and his running-mate, Trevor Gilliam. Gilliam “is tremendously improved and has the potential to be the best wide receiver.” Plus, Coach Henderson added, “We’re a good team at the skill positions, but also have a solid offensive line with five experienced juniors.” Josh Woodley will hold down the

center slot with Ethan Sill and T.J. Dobrucky at the guards. Steven Barham, “the most improved player on the team,” and transfer Augie Conte – at 6'6" and 252 pounds, he’s the largest Knight manning the tackle slots. The offensive line averages an athletic 218 pounds. Senior Mason Jolly will line up at tight-end. The Knights will add offensive depth with junior Nathaniel Settle spelling Watts at tailback and “under-rated” senior Gavin Paul filling in at full-back. Sophomores Collin Rogers and Greg Woody, and junior Christian Goodwyn, provide serviceable back-ups at tight-end and guard with freshman Antonio Evola a solid substitute at offensive tackle. The Knights will line up in their traditional pro-set with a tight-end and two wide outs. “We’ll be a lot more traditional knowing defenses must stop Watts and Moore,” Coach Henderson said. Should defenses accomplish that task they would then face the dual threat of Smith and Gilliam. Or perhaps not. In order to present an effective, total-package offense, Coach Henderson must decid which of his three quarterback candidates

“We’ll be disappointed if we don’t contend for [the State Title]. I won’t say we are the favorite, but [we are] one of the top three or four teams.” Head Coach Mike Henderson is going to be the answer. “I’m waiting for one guy to step up and say ‘I’m the Man here,’” he said. Senior Brandon Holt is the most knowledgeable and, at 6'3" and 175 pounds, is the largest quarterback the Knights have fielded in years. Holt is a “sports nut” and has shown good leadership skills, according to his coach. But he played as a back-up wide receiver

BLESSED SACRAMENT HUGUENOT last year and as a back-up quarterback in his sophomore season. Junior Brian Clarke (6'1" and 195 pounds) is the best passer of the trio but has had difficulty grasping the total offense. Sophomore Stephen Bendele is the best athlete of the three and had a sparkling season, leading the junior varsity last year. He is of the more typical size of BSH quarterbacks – 5'10" and 175 pounds with the hereditary Bendele toughness – but has no experience at the varsity level. In their quest for back-to-back State Championships “quarterback could be a big question for us,” Coach Henderson said. BSH fans will see the unique 3-5-3 defense used so successfully last season. “The linebackers are the foundation for our defense,” Coach Henderson said, and the Knights have some good ones. All-State John Moore will be flanked by Dobrucky and Watts. Paul and junior David Lewis will be the Knights’ stoppers on the outside. Gone is All-State- and “the heart and soul of [last years] team”- Chris Howard, but in his place junior “David Lewis has been very impressive,” Coach Henderson said. “And our back-up linebackers (Rogers and Woodley) are strong.” Senior Justin Yancey and Smith will line up at cornerbacks and Gilliam will hold down the freesafety slot. “We do not have a lot of depth in the defensive backfield,” Coach Henderson said. Senior Nathan Temple will handle kicking duties when the ball is on the tee and Watts returns as the Knights’ outstanding punter. Conte and his extraordinary length is installed at one defensive end, Settle at the other. Goodwyn – 5'11" and 225 pounds – will be called on to plug up the middle and occupy blockers, allowing the backs to function. The Knights can rotate six defensive lineman, and with the greatest number of players in uniform in memory (30), nine starters will play only one-way. “This may be the best all-around team we are going to put on the field,” Coach Henderson said. But the uncertainty at quarterback, as well as “a stronger conference over-all,” has made the quest for a 2010 State Championship far from a certainty. “We’ll be disappointed if we don’t contend for it,” said Henderson, who enters his fourteenth season with three State Titles on his resume. “I won’t say we are the favorite, but [we are] one of the top three or four teams.” Standing in the way is perennial contender Isle of Wight, Southampton Academy (7-3 last year and returning all but three starters) and Fuqua Academy. Fuqua was 8-2 last season and will be returning “most of their line-up and their scary skill kids.”

Spotlight on: Brandon Holt Blessed Sacrament Huguenot senior Brandon Holt admits that he is a sports junkie. “I get up with ESPN and go to bed with ESPN,” he said. “Sports are my life; they’re what makes me tick.” Holt and two teammates are currently battling for the starting quarterback position and the responsibility of running the offense for the VIS Division III defending State Champion Knights. His coaches agree that he is very knowledgeable, but to come out on top, he is going to need considerably more than just a good working knowledge of the game.

On what he brings to the team... Known as an “effort player,” Brandon saw some action as the seventh or eighth man on the BSH basketball squad, but only a back-up role as a wide receiver on the football team last year. He did back-up duty for Austin Wingfield at quarterback during his freshman and sophomore campaigns. At 6’3” he would be the tallest starting quarterback in memory at BSH. But, he says, “I’m a more mental than physical quarterback, and I feel like I know what I’m doing.” And, he added with a smile, “I’m loud.”

On defining ‘success’ in 2010... “I’ve been here (BSH) since second grade and I put pressure on myself. As a team, we are having fun, but as a senior I put pressure on myself to go out on top. My year will be a success if I win the quarterback job and we win a State Championship,” he said. After ten days of practice he sees the team getting steadily better and more in-synch every day; “And more importantly, I’m learning every day.”

On knowing his role... With the 2010 squad based on a dynamic running attack, Brandon’s skills as a passer are being down-played. “My job is to not make mental mistakes or to turn the ball over, but I feel very confident in my arm if we have to throw,” he said.

On the future... With plans to attend a college with a good business program after graduation, Brandon will pretty much miss everything his ten years at BSH have meant to him. “This is my family. My teammates, the teachers and the coaches are great.” “Winning is great,” he said, “but losing is terrible if you realize you could have done more. I hate missing an opportunity.” –Richard Carrier

Spotlight on: Deon Watts Often choosing to change one’s environment is a scary proposition. Sometimes i's life-changing. In the case of senior Deon Watts his decision to transfer to Blessed Sacrament Huguenot three years ago was scary and also life-changing, but in a very positive way. “I figured a smaller school would be better for me… give me better educational opportunities….better opportunities for my whole life.” His new atmosphere “has helped me so much. Its been the best thing ever for me.”

All in the family ... The Watts family moved to Powhatan when Deon was in the fifth grade. His brother Eric played at Powhatan High School and went on to play college football. Their father also played college football. All three played the same three positions: linebacker, punter and running back. “Its in my genes,” Deon said. With the physical skills coming from a gene pool of very accomplished family members, Deon was almost assured of developing into a fine athlete and he has done exactly that at BSH. As a Virginia Independent Schools All-State running-back, Second Team All-State punter and Second Team All-Metro linebacker and running-back (he was also named as All-State linebacker in 2008) Deon was a prime contributor to the Knights’ 2009 State Championship. Head Coach Mike Henderson agreed that Deon’s style at running back, “is a little bit flashy,” and this high profile has overshadowed some of his other assets. “Yes, he’s a playmaker, but he is a tremen-

dously hard worker, has a great personality and the guys on his team absolutely love him.”

Defense! At 5'10" and a chiseled 190 pounds Deon is best recognized by his smooth running style, but it is on the defensive side of the ball where he feels most comfortable. “I started playing defense when I was just a little kid in Maryland. I’ve been defensive minded all of my life.”

What makes him tick... His mother’s Lasagna puts warmth in his stomach, as well as in his heart, and you’ll find mostly Hip-Hop on his I-pod. Movies that make him laugh – Step Brothers and The Hangover – are his favorite. He wants to go to college and play football (Virginia Military Institute has offered a full-ride scholarship), but is undecided about a career.

Why he loves BSH... Deon is absolutely unwavering in his love and respect for his parents and his coaches. “I listen to everybody, my Dad, my coaches and my teammates. But Coach (Henderson) is the best thing that ever happened to me, on and off the field. He sees even the small things and has made a big impression on my life… life-lessons… discipline and pushing through to the end.” –Richard Carrier

Spotlight on: John Moore Senior John Moore is really laid-back. “I try to be a leader and to help everyone to be their best,” he said. “But its about having fun. Don’t get uptight, just play football” ... until the opening kick-off. As the ball comes off of the tee the Knights’ All-State and All-Metro linebacker becomes a wrecking machine. “He’s unbelievable,” said Head Coach Mike Henderson. “He’s a hard hitter; and a hard worker, who just loves football and loves contact” … to the extreme. “Sometimes I pump myself up too much and just go and hit anybody,” John admitted.

Hit first, ask questions later... This desire to punish transfers to his style as a running back for the Knights. At 5’10” and 210 pounds, Moore spends 12 months out of the year in the weight room. His 4.68 forty speed makes him a linebacker’s worst nightmare: power, speed and a total commitment to destruction. But as a running back, John’s Kamikaze style sometimes backfires. “I need to run more with my eyes,” he said. “Running to the hole rather than always trying to run over people.” And, again, this revelation causes conflict. “My greatest strength as an athlete is playing with reckless abandon; just hitting stuff without regard to my body.”

Don't worry, be happy... Take John Moore off of the football field and “laid-back” becomes his middle name. “I just love being alive and living for today,” he said. “Living in the moment.” Having friends, but more importantly, being a friend, is John’s off-field mission. “and, believe it or not my friends, will probably say I’m goofy.”

Future plans... John plans to attend college next year and hopes he can find a school that wants him to play football. Regardless, his career goal is to coach football. His immediate goal is for him and his teammates to capture another Virginia Independent Schools Division Three State Championship this year and “if we truly come together as a team we can do it.” Personally, another All-State and All-Metro selection would please him, but he would rather be remembered as a leader at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot, a role he embraces on both the football field and the basketball court, where he was the Knights’ leading scorer and clutch 3point shooter last season.

A perfect day... Feed him a big steak, turn on some Lynyrd Skynyrd and put “Friday Night Lights“ in the DVD player and John Moore is happy. But keep his little brother from ”hogging the TV,” and, above all, keep him away from snakes. “I hate snakes; they make me cry.” –Richard Carrier

BSH 35, Kenston Forest 14

BSH 36, Massanutten Military 6

The Knights opened the 200Freshman season at Kenston Forest with sophomore Nathaniel Settle substituting at running back. Settle ripped off 180 yards, including one 70-yard TD run, on just 16 carries to propel the BSH squad to a 35-14 win. John Moore’s one-yard plunge and an Austin Wingfield to Trevor Gilliam 65 yard TD pass and catch put BSH up 14-0 in the first quarter. Chris Howard added a five-yard plunge to end the first half with the Knights leading 21-7. Settle’s 70 yard run put the game away early in the third quarter and Gavin Paul’s interception set Howard up for his second score, another five-yard plunge.. Howard also gathered in four passes for 82 yards to go along with 42 rushing yards and two TDs. Nathan Temple went five for five on extra points and Matt Wyman’s solid performance on the offensive line drew praise from Coach Henderson.

Blessed Sacrament traveled to Massanutten Military and put up a 20 point first quarter to put their 36-6 win out of reach early. Deon Watts took advantage of his first offensive action with a nine-yard TD run after runs of 31 and 12 yards respectively. Chris Howard; 74 yards on nine carries scored on a 23 yard scamper and John Moore pushed into the end-zone from two yards out then added another score from the four-yard line. The Knights’ defense chalked up a safety and, taking advantage of limited carries; six, Watts plunged in from the one.. Moore, Howard and T.J Dobrucky were defensive standouts and quarterback Austin Wingfield had his best game of the season, completing four passes for 84 yards, all in the first half.

Northcross 28, BSH 7 The Knights drew defending State Champion Northcross for their 200Freshman home opener and the two squads hammered on each other for 31 scoreless minutes. Late in the third quarter a bad snap and a poor decision by the BSH punter put the Raiders in business at the Knights’ 15 yard-line. Two plays and a missed extra points put Northcross up 6-0. Another error; an interception ,35 yard touchdown return and a two-point conversion put the score at 14-0. On the first play of the final period, All-State running back Tyler Caveness torched the Knights on an 86 yard-game-sealing-run. A Chris Howard reception and a one-yard plunge by John Moore prevented a shut-out. An eight play, 63 yard drive accounted for the Raiders final points. Coach Henderson saw hope in the way his team battled against the number one team in the Commonwealth.

September 18, 2009

Broadwater Academy 13, BSH 34 Chris Howard scored running touchdowns of 6, 34 and 5 yards and threw a 34 yard touchdown pass to his quarterback, Austin Wingfield as the Knights held off Broadwater Academy 34-13. With his Co-All-State running back, Deon Watts seeing limited action, Howard operated out of the newly installed Tiger Package and piled up 7Freshman yards on 10 carries and the three running touchdowns. John Moore added a scored from four yards out and the Knights forced a Broadwater safety at 286. Howard scored his fourth running touchdown of the contest with a five yard run. Besides doing the punting, Watts contributed an interception and a 48 yard kick-off return. Howard and David Lewis were credited with fumble recoveries.

October 2, 2009

Trinity Episcopal 20, BSH 21 In a game that Coach Henderson said “proved we could play with the big boys,” the Knights hosted Trinity Episcopal and pounded out a final-minute drive to take a 21 to 20 victory. The Knights struck first with an 1 play, 65 yard drive culminated by Deon Watts’ 11 yard run and Nathan Temple‘s point after. Gavin Paul intercepted to stop the Titan’s first drive. Trinity put together a late second quarter drive and scored on a quarterback

draw, but missed the point after. BSH answered with a 12 play drive and John Moore’s three yard score. Late in the third quarter another quarterback draw and a two-point conversion earned the tie at 14. BSH’s long drive broke down and a field goal failed, leading to a 16 play, clock- eating scoring drive by the Titans. The point after failed. Trevor Gilliam took a 14 yard Wingfield pass, Wingfield and Howard combined for an impossible pass and reception at the Trinity 40. Wingfield fought for five yards before Watts cut through the Titan’s defense for 33 yards. Moore found the end zone and Nathan Temple banged the pressure extra point home for the win with three seconds left.

BLESSED SACRAMENT HUGUENOT Knights retaliated and went ahead on a fourteen yard Wingfied to Ryan Bendele pass and Temple’s kick. After holding IOW and driving to their 15, Watts fumbled for the first time and the Raiders engineered a 82 yard drive to score on the final play of the half. Late in the third quarter BSH drove to the IOW 28 but Wingfield’s pass was picked off and returned 76 yards to put the Raiders up 20-6. Wingfield redeemed himself with a 73 yard strike to Marquis Smith and the Knights closed the gap to 14-20. The Raiders added an exceptionally long field goal; 42 yards, putting the Knights in a two score hole. They were unable to respond.

October 30, 2009 October Freshman, 2009

Brunswick Academy 7, BSH 35 The Knights hosted the Brunswick Academy Vikings and piled up 21 points in the first half of the first quarter before rolling over the visitors 35-7. Deon Watts gathered in the opening kick-off and negotiated the 8Freshman yards to the end-zone un-touched. Chris Howard forced and recovered a fumble on Brunswick’s first possession and Watts quickly scored his second TD from the eight. Ryan Bendele’s interception and return set up John Moore for a short score. BSH’s defense led by Nathaniel Settle, set Watts up for a 30 yard run, capped off by Howard’s six yard score. A forty-yard Austin Wingfield to Howard connection ran the score to 35-0, in the first half. Coach Henderson cleared the bench and played his reserves for the entire second half.

BSH 33, Roanoke Catholic 7 Facing an almost must- win situation the Knights traveled to Roanoke Catholic, forced five turnovers and manhandled R/C 33-7. Chris Howard scored two running touchdowns of 12 and 17 yards and Marquis Smith emerged as a new deep threat. Smith gathered in a 57 yard pass from Wingfield and later scored on a 15 yard strike. Smith also contributed an interception and a fumble recovery. Howard added a seven yard TD reception in the second half and John Moore ripped off a 22 yard score early in the forth. Watts gained 77 yards on six carries, Wingfield was a sparkling 8-14, Senior7 yards and added two TD passes to his school record. John Moore picked up 56 yards on six tries. Second and third teamers held R/C scoreless until the final minute.

Fuqua Academy 18, BSH 46 Fuqua Academy and their 6-1 record wasted no time in putting two scores on the board and had the Knights down 0- 12 before they caught their collective breath. Deon Watts’ 41 yard punt return and plunge from the two began the turnaround that led to a 46-18 pummeling of the Falcons. A 3Freshman yard Wingfield to Gilliam connection gave the Knights the lead. Watts’ interception and 12 yard run added another score. Watts opened the second half with a two yard score and a Wingfield to Howard pass added six more points. Watts engineered his forth touchdown of the game from five yards out and then his fifth on a dazzling 37 yard run through the Falcon’s defense.

October 23,2009

BSH 14, Isle of Wight 23 The Knights traveled to the home of perennial State Champion Isle of Wight and committed enough mistakes to assure they would not overcome the Chargers. After both teams failed to put together a significant drive in the first quarter, the Chargers put together a drive resulting in a 12 yard score by their quarterback. The point after missed. The

Southampton Academy 6, BSH 32. With playoffs hanging in the balance 8-2 Southampton visited the 7-2 Knights intent on stopping Deon Watts while controlling tempo with three huge running backs. But the Knights took the opening kick-off and on the first play from scrimmage Austin Wingfield hit Trevor Gilliam on a 56 yard TD pass. The Raiders were stopped on their first drive and never recovered in a 32-6 loss. Gavin Paul’s stop on a Southampton fake punt led to Chris Howard’s 23 yard score. With the first half winding down Howard found Wingfield alone in the end zone for their second TD pass of the year. Watts caused a turnover at the goal-line and three plays later sprinted through the defense on a 57 yard TD ramble. The Raiders scored on a nine-play drive, but Wingfield and Watts retaliated with a 31 yard touchdown pass and the Knights were in the playoffs.

November 13, 2009

BSH 17, Northcross 15 To advance to the Championship game the Knights had to avenge a 7-28 loss early in the season at the hands of the Northcross Raiders and on their turf. In a game of field position the hero was Deon Watts, but not for his running but for his punting which gradually won the field position war and

BLESSED SACRAMENT HUGUENOT a 17-15 victory for BSH. After a scoreless first quarter, the Knights took advantage of a short Raiders punt to begin a drive at the opposing 28 yard-line. John Moore took a Senior yard pass from Wingfield for the first score. (Moore also had 18 tackles.) On the Raiders’ next possession Watts stepped in front of Fuller Clark’s pass and out maneuvered and out-ran the Northcross defense on his way to a 75 yard TD return and a 14-0 lead. Another turn-over, a Marquis Smith interception led to a 30 yard field goal by Nathan Temple as the first half ended. On the final play of the third quarter, Northcross punched in their first score, but missed the point after. Pinned deep in their own end, Coach Henderson called of an intentional safety and the Knights led 14-8. The Raiders took advantage of two missed tackles and a face mask penalty to score on a 32 yard pass play with three minutes left. John Moore took control of the game and put the Knights into the Championship game with eight consecutive time-gobbling runs.

November 20, 2009

BSH 22, Isle of Wight 16 To win their third State Championship in seven years the Knights had to travel to Isle of Wight, avenge an earlier 1423 loss to the Raiders, overcome a three period scoring drought and make up a nine point deficit. The Raiders intercepted Wingfield to end the Knights first drive, but were stymied themselves. After an exchange of punts, IOW’s

All-State quarterback, Dan Brown ripped through the BSH defense for a 66 yard score. The point after failed. Behind a 66 yard run by John Moore the Knights sent Chris Howard into the end zone. A procedure penalty negated the score and forced a field goal attempt. The kick failed. With four minutes left in the half, the center-snap on a punt went over Watts’ head and the Raiders took over on the BSH Senior. The Knights defense held but IOW kicked a 34 yard field goal for a Freshman-0 half-time lead. A scoreless third period put BSH’s chances in even more jeopardy. After an IOW punt early in the final quarter Wingfield caught the Raiders in single coverage on Watts and hit him in stride. A 32 yard gain put the Knights at the Raiders 18 where Wingfield found Howard for the TD. The point after was true. On the ensuing kick-off Howard made a hit on the returner that was so hard “it just stoked up every one,” his Coach said. After a three and out John Moore took control of the game. His 35 yard run (15 carries for 158 yards) a pass reception to the seven, his bull rush over the goal line and a Wingfield to Howard two-point conversion ran the score to 15-Freshman. Aaron Johnson separated Brown from the ball and Watts (111 yards on 1Freshman carries) took over. His seven yard run sealed the State Championship for the Knights. The IOW late score was of no consequence.
