any homeowners want to introduce pattern to their rooms but don't know where to start. They may wonder if two patterns match or how to determine scale. It may take a little practice, but using pattern is easier than one may think. Nothing adds visual interest to a room more than pattern and color. While homeowners may have the knack with color, they may shy away from pattern. Individuals can trust their instincts – they're usually right. For those who have mastered pattern with their wardrobes, it's time to try out some pattern in home design. Varying pattern size adds dimension to a room. Not every

Try out pattern, even if it is only on an accent chair in one room of the house. It can add visual dimension to a space.
pattern should be the same size and variety, otherwise things can look too matched and staged. Try varying patterns of similar colors but experiment with size. For example, place a largely patterned area rug on the floor. An ottoman may feature a medium-sized pattern. Mix things up by alternating throw pillows in a floral or paisley print with subtle stripes. However, make sure the texture of the fabrics match. Gauzy curtains with heavy chenille pillows may clash. When selecting patterned items, choose similarly colored items. This way even if the fabrics or patterns aren't exactly the same, they'll look cohesive through color. For a room to feel a bit more upbeat, consider complimentary opposite colors. If you prefer a more restful atmosphere, try a palette of colors from the same family. Just vary the intensity of the shades. Homeowners who have gained some pattern confidence may want to strike out on their own to create a room that is unique. Those who still need a little help may want to consider taking the path of designers before them. There are certain patterns and fabrics that have already been established as working together for certain design styles and are a good place to start. American Southwest: Navajo patterns are at the forefront of this design style and can be used on upholstery or pillows. Use a smaller-scale stripe on window treatments. Solid-shaded throw pillows in a complementary color to the Navajo pattern will coordinate well.

English country: This style is about large-scale chintz on sofa and draperies. Mix in narrow striped, slip-covered lounge chairs for a little extra panache. American country: A small floral print on the sofa or comforter can be offset with a large country quilt pattern hung on the wall as a wall treatment. Checkerboard checks, medium stripes on draperies or select crocheted valences coordinate well. 18th century: Lavish patterned fabrics in chintz or paisley featuring golds and robin's egg blue are just some of the options for classic decorating. Modern: Mix stripes and geometric patterned items in splashes of color to add a modern feel to a room. Try experimenting with patterns to make a room more personalized and less of a neutral blank page. If it proves difficult to come up with patterns that work together, look at design magazines or books for some inspiration.

The color experts at Krylon, the nation’s leading spray paint manufacturer, curated a palette called “Indigenous” as part of its 2012 color trends, which includes hues that are perfect for the fall season. “There is a primal energy to this palette,” says Donna Schroeder, manager of color and design at Krylon. “As we look deeper into the forest, our search for connection brings us to an untouched and pure palette of greens and browns that please the environmentalist in us all,” she adds. This palette includes earthy shades of green, like Hunter, Citrus and Fern; as well as a warm, gray neutral called Pebble, and warm reddish accents, like Burgundy, that are great for seasonal decorating.

Just because Halloween and Thanksgiving are the major holidays in fall, it doesn't mean you should only deck your home with pumpkins, goblins or turkeys. There are plenty of ways to incorporate the look and feel of the season with textures, finishes and accent pieces. As the weather gets cooler, add colorful blankets and throws in different weaves to add interest to your existing furniture. Engage all your senses by incorporating scented candles throughout your home – fall staples like apple, caramel and cinnamon will make every room more warm and inviting. Don't feel like you need to buy all new decor for the season. Update existing items you may already have around the house, like candlesticks, a serving tray or picture frames by touching them up with some paint in the new fashionable colors. As a focal point in living rooms, the mantel is an ideal location to display your new beautiful fall creations. Adding lighted elements, like lanterns or candles, can also bring additional warmth to the room. Don't have a mantel? Don't worry – instead, your dining table can be made over to display your seasonal decor pieces. To protect the top from any scratches or stains, place a runner underneath your new tablescape. Burlap is a perfect choice for this time of year, helping you bring the look and feel of fall right into your dining room.

Easy carpet cleaning tips and tricks from the experts
A A
s the weather cools and daylight hours shorten, families tend to spend more time inside.
After a long summer of open windows, sticky treats and constant activity in and out the door, you might notice that your carpets are looking a bit drab. Keeping carpets clean might seem like a daunting task, but with some tips from the experts it's quicker and easier than you think. Carpet provides good traction, absorbs noises, and saves homeowners money because it naturally insulates a room. And, contrary to popular misconceptions, carpet that is cleaned regularly is fine for people with allergies, and even asthma. The best practice for keeping carpets consistently clean is having a regular maintenance routine. Refreshing carpets after a special event, season of tough use, or simply any time of year is easy with these tips from the experts at the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), a national carpet trade association that focuses on science-based research, customer advocacy and environmental initiatives. Create a vacuum schedule. Have you ever wondered if vacuuming really makes a difference? Removing soil when it's on the surface, before it gets tramped down, is the first and most important step in carpet maintenance. Use slow, repetitive motions that overlap (about four swipes), ensuring you get right up to the edges where dust, pollen and pet dander like to accumulate. How often do you need to vacuum? That answer may surprise you. Generally once a week with a CRI-certified vacuum is a good place to start, but depending on how frequently the area is used, you'll likely want to do it more often. For example, high-traffic or
pet areas should be vacuumed daily, medium-traffic areas require about twice a week and light-traffic areas can be done once a week. Just as you wouldn't wear a shirt over and over again without washing it, you don't want to go too long between vacuum-
ing your carpets. Treat stains the correct way. Up to 98 percent of carpet is manufactured in the United States, and most is made to be stain-resistant. However, junior's ice cream cone drips and Fido's dirty paws can leave marks that may seem almost too difficult to remove. No matter how hard you try to prevent them, stains do happen, so it's important to act quickly. Scoop up solids and blot liquids with a dry, white cloth or paper towel, starting at the edge of the spot moving toward the center. Do not scrub - it can damage carpet and spread the mess. Next, treat the spot with a CRI-tested and approved carpet cleaning solution. If you don't have one on hand, plain water often works better than untested carpet cleaners. For wine or chocolate stains, try mixing 1/4 teaspoon clear dishwashing liquid with one cup warm water. Avoid laundry detergent which can cause permanent damage, such as a change in color. For coffee or tea stains, try mixing 1 cup white vinegar with 1 cup water. For ink stains, apply rubbing alcohol to a cloth and blot. Have a wax spill? Cover the spot with a clean brown paper bag or heavy brown paper and apply low heat from an iron. The paper will absorb the wax as it melts. Call in the pros. Just like you visit the dentist to get your teeth cleaned regularly, your carpets also need attention from a trained professional. To keep your carpets looking great and lasting for years to come, you should get them professionally deep cleaned
Designing with... Linda
every 12 to 18 months. If you've never had your carpets professionally cleaned, now is a great time to start before the holidays arrive. Start by getting bids and don't be afraid to ask questions. A good carpet cleaning should include vacuuming, a pre-spray and routine spot removal. Many won't charge for furniture removal either. Whether you want to get in a better habit with routine carpet maintenance or you simply want to refresh your carpet for the change of seasons or a special event, these tips will keep your carpet and home looking wonderful today and long into the future.

his year seems to be the end of all things beige, says Robin Nacht, who owns Dee-Jay Carpet in Cedarhurst, with her husband Michael Nacht and son David. More colors, styles and options are available for customers than ever before. Although neutral floor coverings will always be utilized, flooring choices are expanding into a more fashion forward palette. Customers seem to want more color in their lives and are starting from the floor up. Use colors and patterned carpets to create a unique interior. Design influences such as Ikat textiles are being used in flooring bringing textural, abstract and more contemporary patterns into the mix. The growth in contemporary design has resulted in tailored patterns, metallic looks in vinyl and all shades of grey. Customers are learning via the Internet or HGTV, says Nacht, that they have access to explore every idea imaginable and there is a wider range of products than ever before to suit those needs. Homeowners looking to revamp their rooms can turn to the versatility of carpeting for many of their needs. The varied types of carpeting on the market offer something to suit every style and budget. • Cut pile: This is one of the most popular types of carpeting. When most people think of carpet, this is what they envision. This carpeting is formed by cutting looped

carpet fibers at the top with yarn bundles standing up vertically. • Berber: Berber has thick, durable loops that are good in high-traffic areas. This carpeting limits footprints and vacuum marks. The downside is that loops can be snagged and unravel. Also, berber carpeting may trap in dirt. • Level-loop: Similar to Berber but looser in weave is level-loop. It is also good in hightraffic areas and will not trap dirt as easily as berber. • Cut and loop pile: This carpeting has a variation of secured loops and cut fibers for added texture. This will be a mediumdurability carpet. • Textured: Textured carpet has a soft feel and is one of the carpeting styles growing in popularity. These carpets may have embossed patterns and come in solid colors. • Saxony: This soft carpet is medium-durability and will show footprints and vacuum marks. Saxonies are tightly twisted cut piles that are heatset straight. Saxonies consist of two or more fibers twisted together in a yarn. • Frieze: A highly twisted cut-pile carpet that is good in high-traffic areas. The short fibers curl in different directions to hide footprints. • Plush: These carpets are lightly twisted, uniform-colored fibers that are soft and usually found in formal rooms. They will hold footprints and show vacuum marks.

SECURING WINDOW SEALS
Get ready for the storms
By Sharon Naylor
Weatherize your house to avoid dealing with damage later
Eliminating costly drafts
Window seals are your home's first line of defense when it comes to energy efficiency.
hen your window seals aren't a tight fit, they let cold air into your home and waste energy when your heating system has to work harder. That will cost you. So assess the seals on all of your windows, including bay windows, to see whether you have any problems to fix. A window clearly has a problem if you see condensation on the glass panes, a sure sign that you don't have a tight seal, but many seal issues are less obvious than that. A simple way to test each of your windows is to move your hand around the outside borders and middle pane edges to feel for cold spots or breezes. Some experts recommend slowly moving a lit candle or incense stick around the rims of your windows, but be sure to keep curtains and sheers clear of any flame or ember as you do so. If your candle's flame flickers or your incense stick's smoke blows in a different direction, that's the site of a seal issue.
W W
What Causes Window Seal Failure? Most often, age is what causes window seals to fail. Weather seals installed several years ago may have dried out and become inefficient, or they may have become damaged when you had your house siding cleaned with a pressure washer or your house painted. You may just have a buildup of dirt or leaves or a dead bug stuck in the window tracks, pushing the seal out of position. Cleaning Your Seals Vacuum your window tracks and seals regularly to remove debris, dirt and dead insects. Next, spray your window tracks
with an all-purpose cleaner, and let it sit for a few minutes as it works on dirt and grime. Then take a specialized window track cleaning brush (available on Amazon. com for less than $6) and scrub away all buildup. Wipe the tracks completely clean, and dry them with a paper towel before closing the window.
Repairing Window Seals Some seals do need to be replaced – for example, old seals that absorb water, causing mold issues, and completely dried-out or flat stripping. As a weekend project, you can repair old or damaged seals on your windows. To do this, know which type of seal you're replacing or repairing. Do you have weatherstrips, or is it caulk? Full and complete removal of either is essential to creating a complete seal with new product. Don Vandervort, founder of the home improvement website HomeTips, advises using a putty knife to remove any existing seal or caulk around the interior trim of the window and clean the surface. If you are removing caulk and choose to re-caulk your window edges, Vandervort says, "use a caulking gun to apply new silicone or silicone-impregnated latex caulk," which is readily available at home improvement stores. If you prefer the look and process of weatherstripping over caulk, consider the two main types of weatherstripping used around windows: • Self-stick tapes: Made of rubber, foam or vinyl, these strips are backed with adhesive covered with a peel-off backing. Simply cut the strips to length, peel the adhesive, place them and press them to secure them. This choice, according to
Vandervort, is ideal for "metal or vinyl windows where nailing isn't an option, especially where the parts of doors or windows press together rather than slide against one another." Vandervort says: "The highest-quality and longest-lasting of the self-stick tapes is ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber. EPDM rubber retains its elasticity and insulating qualities even after years of exposure to subzero temperatures. Another good choice is high-density foam, which is also durable and long-lasting. Closed-cell foam is waterproof, weatherresistant and inexpensive, but it does break down and will need to be replaced regularly. Open-cell foam can be compressed the most to seal even the narrowest of gaps, but it is only for indoor use, as it quickly degrades when exposed to the elements." • Nail-on strips: These are ideal for wood windows, according to Vandervort, because they don't depend on adhesives, which can lose their sticking power over time or in heat. Where gaps are large, use a vinyl tubular gasket or rubber tubing with a metal-reinforced flange for nailing.
When You Need Professional Help Truly damaged or aged windows can be replaced with new, energy-efficient windows, which may qualify you for a tax credit. New and improved windows completely eliminate seal issues and, in some instances, also provide your furniture and wood floors with protection from ultraviolet rays. It's a big investment, but it saves you money in energy costs and improves your home's resale value.

Mother Nature seems to like getting dramatic these days. Last fall, the northeast experienced a tremendously damaging early blizzard that hit when the leaves were still on the trees, snapping limbs and cutting out power for days. And the cold weather boosted home heating bills to the point of pain. So let's take last fall and winter as a warning that Mother Nature could whip up some dangerous and damaging weather again this year. But this time you'll be well prepared with preventive steps that can save you from having to deal with home damage and sky-high energy bills during the dead of winter. Take these steps to weatherize your home now: Clean your gutters. For safety, hire a professional gutter-cleaning service that also can inspect your gutters for needed repair. A clogged gutter could lead to a flooded basement when the snow melts, costing you thousands in cleanup and perhaps carpet replacement. Turn off outdoor water faucets. It's not enough just to turn them off; shut off the water supply to them, if possible, and cover them with an insulated outdoor faucet "sock" to keep the connected pipes from freezing, breaking and leading to leaks or floods later. Insulate water pipes that may be close to freezing temperatures. A plumber can help you assess the pipes under your sink, in your bathrooms, in the basement and elsewhere. If there is not adequate wall insulation, say, between an exterior wall and a bathroom wall, the water pipes beneath your vanity could freeze, expand, burst and cause very expensive flooding. Install carbon monoxide detectors or replace all the batteries in your existing ones. It's wise to have these lifesaving detectors working optimally year-round, and it is especially important during storm power outages and floods that may create a CO2 situation in your home. Gas log fireplaces and portable heaters can give off carbon monoxide and cause tragedies when high-quality detectors are not used in a home. Also install top-quality fire detectors. Call your local fire department to schedule a free fire safety home inspection, in which their fire safety expert will assess your home and suggest products and placement for detectors. Weatherize your windows. New energy-efficient windows are often made of two layers of insulating glass; older single-pane windows let in cold air, which could cost you heating bill money and perhaps get bad enough to freeze pipes. If you cannot afford new windows, consider installing storm windows. Caulk around windows, and if necessary, install large plastic insulation sheets over the entirety of drafty windows, using a hairdryer to seal the sheet according to package instructions. Install a programmable thermostat. It will not only keep your home's temperatures comfortable but also kick on while you're away for a vacation or the holidays, warming up your home and preventing frozen pipes. Install quality insulation. Either hire insulation experts or take a free seminar on insulation installation at your local home improvement store. Choose from energy-efficient or organic insulation materials, and apply generous amounts in your attic and crawlspaces to keep your home's heat in, which will help tremendously if you lose power for a few hours during a winter storm. Have chimneys cleaned and inspected. During cold winter nights or storms, you might light a fire in your fireplace for light and heat, or just to enjoy the coziness. But be sure to have your chimney inspected for breaks in the brick flue, blockages such as animal nests, proper flue range of motion and the buildup of dangerous creosote.
