HISTORY OF THE FIVE TOWNS

T

he Rockaway Peninsula on which the Five Towns stands derives its name from the Rockaway Indians, or Reuckowacky tribe. Early settlers recognized the value of the pasture land that stretched from Hewlett to Inwood, and forced the Reuckowacky population out. The last Native American in the Five Towns died in 1888, and Abraham Hewlett erected a monument to remember the “Last of the Iroquois.” The memorial still stands in Woodsburgh.

EARLY HISTORY The first settlers arrived in the 1600s. England and Holland vied for dominance. By 1664, the English were entrenched, and Britain ruled the land. Local government was based in Hempstead and dominated by Presbyterian settlers. The Presbyterians, who fled religious persecution in England, quickly established their religion as the binding force in everyday life. Other religious groups appeared in the Hempstead area. An attempt to unify them is evidenced in a charter of liberties and privileges, drafted on Oct. 17, 1683. It states, “No persons which profess faith in God by Jesus Christ, shall at any way be molested, punished, disquieted, or called in question for any difference of opinion…all and every such may at all times fully enjoy his or their judgment or conscience in matters of religion.” These words had little effect on the true state of affairs. Less established than the Presbyterians, Quakers and Roman Catholics were not given a warm reception. Subjected to beatings, imprisonment, torture and indifference, their fate seemed destined to be that of the Native American population. But as time passed, Catholics and Quakers established themselves. From there, the groundwork was laid for mutual tolerance. Farming and cattle raising enabled settlers to be selfsufficient. Clam-digging and oyster-farming grew into major industries. The oysters, measuring as wide as a foot in diameter, were renowned along the Eastern Seaboard.

REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD During the Revolutionary War, many Five Towns residents were strict Loyalists. Colonel Richard Hewlett was even involved in a plot to kidnap General George Washington. The years between the Revolutionary War’s end and the War of 1812 saw the depletion of Nassau’s forests. And the area’s seemingly inexhaustible shellfish beds dwindled, until the Town of Hempstead adopted strict measures to restrict nonresidents from clamming in the area. Although they were never again entirely self-sufficient, their farm produce and livestock ensured them a high standard of living. Food was in great demand in New York City’s markets.

Boats ferried farm goods overnight from Nassau to the City. In 1833, the Marine Pavilion was erected in Far Rockaway. It was an enormous hotel for the time, with 160 rooms and an ocean frontage of 230 feet. The Pavilion attracted the heroes and giants of the day, from John Turnbull to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Washington Irving. Soon the area bustled with summertime tourists escaping the hot, dirty City. The Rockaway Peninsula had become a fashionable resort. The railroad spur connecting Valley Stream and the Rockaways was completed in 1869. The Rockaways became real estate gold mines. At the same time, Samuel Wood built the Woodsburgh Pavilion. It stood where Broadway and Woodmere Boulevard now intersect. The hotel had 250 rooms, nine cottages and a racetrack. It was billed as a “family” summer resort and became an internationally renowned playground for the wealthy.

TURN OF THE CENTURY In the decade 1880 to ’90, two other major hotels were built in the Five Towns. The Isle of Wight was constructed in South Lawrence in 1880. The Holly Arms made its home at the corner of Broadway and Hewlett in 1890. The Holly Arms was a favorite of celebrities, including Marie Dressler and Jersey Joe Walcott. In addition to transporting vacationers, the railroad heralded the modern age. Many roads were built. And people who had been only summer visitors began to live in the Five Towns year-round. The automobile spurred the pace of modernization. Large estates and middle-class homes swallowed up farms. The Five Towns’ proximity to New York City made it attractive to industry, and small factories were built. At the turn of the century, the Five Towns community began to grow more diverse. The first Jews to settle in the area came from upper middle class communities in Far Rockaway during the 1890s. Jews first started to gather for worship in the Five Towns at the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Firehouse in 1902. That small but dedicated congregation founded Temple Beth El in Cedarhurst and built their main synagogue in 1922.

RECENT SETTLEMENT From that first congregation sprang the others. Since then, more than 30 temples have been built. And the Five Towns Jewish community has grown into one of the most vibrant in the United States, producing scores of religious and secular leaders, including a United States Congressman, Lawrence resident Herbert Tenzer. Today there are seven incorporated villages and unincorporated areas, but the name “Five Towns” has stuck and includes not only the original five — Hewlett, Woodmere, Cedarhurst, Inwood and Lawrence — but also Atlantic Beach, Woodsburgh, Hewlett Neck, Hewlett Harbor and Hewlett Bay Park. Newly arrived immigrants continue to move into the Five Towns and strengthen the community, adding to the area’s richly varied history and culture.

CHAMBER GREETINGS CEDARHURST BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT (B.I.D.) We're delighted that Cedarhurst continues to be the premier shopping village of the South Shore for quality fashion merchandise for women, men, children and the home. The Cedarhurst Business Improvement District (BID), formed in 1993, monitors retail establishments, offering property owners and merchants suggestions on how to improve the Cedarhurst shopping experience. We take pride in the cleanliness, safety and convenience of shopping in Cedarhurst. Thanks largely to the efforts of Mayor Andrew Parise, improvements have been made throughout the business district including new sidewalks, improved street lighting, attractive benches and tree plantings. BID is, in part, responsible for annual flower plantings and attractive fall holiday lighting and we work closely with our village government to ensure a pleasant shopping environment.

Accomplishments include free weekend parking in all municipal parking fields, year round and at designated times during the fall holiday season. The BID has updated our Web site, www.shopcedarhurst.com, and we welcome any suggestions for improving it and providing information you find useful. Other notable BID efforts include our famous Annual Sidewalk Sale, the Black Friday weekend sales event, our Merchants of Distinction Awards Program and many other community events. The Cedarhurst BID welcomes your thoughts and suggestions on making shopping in the village better for all of us. If you would like to attend a BID board meeting please email info@shopcedarhurst.com for the time and place. STEVE SCHNEIDER Chairman, Cedarhurst B.I.D.

HEWLETT-WOODMERE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION The Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association was formed through a merger of the Hewlett Business Association and the Woodmere Merchants Association. The Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association was formed to bring together the merchants and professionals who are conducting business in, or have a practice in, the villages of Hewlett and Woodmere (including the areas of North Woodmere served by School District 14). This includes zip codes 11598, 11557, and parts of 11581. Our members support programs throughout the school district, the area's yeshivas and other civic agencies. This support provides the stimulus for activities that make Hewlett and Woodmere attractive communities to both live and work. Hewlett Woodmere Business Association Our primary goal is to increase the awareness of our neighbors, friends and residents from adjoining communities as to the merchandise, activities and services offered in the two villages. These steps could include, but are limited to, supporting local school programs, upgrading and maintaining the main shopping areas, helping agencies locate in the two villages that provide programs for the benefit of the two villages. The HWBA has plans to increase Internet marketing and business through the uses of our web sites (this site and the upcoming Sho-

pHewlettWoodmere.com), Internet marketing and social media interactions. We enjoy the support of Town Councilmen Tony Santino and James Darcy, Supervisor Kate Murray, County Legislator Howard Kopel, County Executive Ed Mangano, State Sen. Dean Skelos, and Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg. It is these public officials and others who look to an active association of business and professional individuals to make our community a more attractive place to reside. The HWBA's goal is to be an integral part of the community and its members subscribe to this credo. The school district, the library and in many ways, the shopping areas, truly unite what is known as HewlettWoodmere. The concept is one community with such an attractive wide variety of merchandise and services provided by friends and neighbors who are working to keep the community as attractive as it is. If you haven’t met all these talented entrepreneurs and professionals or availed yourselves of their merchandise and services ... do so! You are in for a treat.

ATLANTIC BEACH Atlantic Beach, the youngest of the Five Towns’ villages, came into existence in 1926 when William Austin, a land developer, planned on turning the land into a posh summer resort for the rich and famous. He began selling land plots, but the Great Depression hampered his efforts. The elegant Nautilus and Atlantic Beach hotels were already high-class tourist attractions for wealthy vacationers. The land eventually was broken up and sold into residential plots. In 1950, the Nassau County Bridge Authority was established to build a bridge connecting Atlantic Beach to Lawrence. Atlantic Beach was incorporated as a village in 1962. The adjoining communities of East Atlantic Beach and Atlantic Beach Estates are unincorporated parts of the Town of Hempstead.

Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park The history of the Incorporated Village of Cedarhurst reflects the story and growth of the country. While Cedarhurst has blossomed into an arena of modern suburbia, it has retained the charm of yesteryear. Offering the finest in services, it remains a homey, quaint and friendly village. The one-square-mile area now called Cedarhurst was settled before the American Revolution. During the War of Independence, much of the land was occupied by British troops. Among the Tory sympathizers living here at the time was the Martin family, the original occupants of the Rock Hall, now a Town of Hempstead public museum in Lawrence. The first significant increase in population came after the Civil War with the extension of the Long Island Rail Road to the Rockaway Peninsula. It was a demand for street improvements that prompted residents to take the steps that led to the birth of the Incorporated Village of Cedarhurst on Sept. 16, 1910. According to local lore, the village took its name from the grove or “hurst of cedar trees near the village post office. From the beginning, Cedarhurst has been led by a mayor (first called a village president) and a Board of Trustees. Today, the Incorporated Village of Cedarhurst is a vital commercial and cultural hub of the Five Towns. The Village of

Cedarhurst is truly a great place to live, work and play.

HEWLETT The history of Hewlett began over 275 years ago. On Jan. 2, 1718, George Heulitt settled in the area, then known as “Hempstead.” He gave his son, John Heulitt, a house and 50 acres of meadow and woodland known as “George Heulitt’s Poynt.” On June 21, 1897, Augustus J. Hewlett donated a strip of land 31 feet wide to the Long Island Rail Road in order to name a railroad station, to be called Hewlett, after his family. Hewlett, which is unincorporated and falls under the jurisdiction of the Town of Hempstead, has several churches and temples, serves as headquarters for the Fourth Precinct police and has a thriving merchants’ association. (The Hewlett Business Association) has been active for five years and organizes the yearly street fair and the Christmas tree and menorah lighting at Broadway and West Broadway during the holiday season.

HEWLETT HARBOR In 1914 Joseph Auerbach, a famous lawyer, bought most of the land that is now Hewlett Harbor and built a summer residence. In the course of the construction of the Auerbach House, the remains of an Algonquin Indian Chief were found. He was buried with copper beads called “Sewan” by Indians. Auerbach built a country club for his friends and named it after the beads. The Seawane Club was sold in the 1920s and the new owners determined that the two square miles of land was more than they needed. The remaining land was developed and sold for one-family residential lots. No business use of any part of the property was then, or is now, permitted under village zoning regulations. In 1925 Hewlett Harbor was incorporated as a village. The village consists of 439 one-family homes, the Seawane Club and Village Hall.

HEWLETT BAY PARK In 1927, attorney Carleton Macy developed and built the village known as Hewlett Bay Park. The neighborhood is home to George W. Hewlett High School and the Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls.

HEWLETT NECK Hewlett Neck is the smallest village of the three, covering only three quarters of a square mile and was developed on a portion of Woodmere, also in 1927.

INWOOD

The Inwood Fire Department celebrated its 125 anniversary with a parade and a block party. The history of Inwood begins over 200 years ago. Indians used to gather in the forested marshland for their vast reserves of oysters, clams and mussels, which were eaten and used for making wampum. The early 1800s brought the first influx of new settlers. The new residents moved from Hempstead Town to the unnamed area to fish and farm. The fishermen in the area called themselves “North West Pointers,” due to their rather isolated location on the Rockaway Peninsula. These rambunctious, hard-living, loud fishermen often got drunk and fought, disturbing the quiet, peaceful farmers. In 1870, the region became informally known as Westville but had to be changed to a different name to avoid confusing it with the Town of Westville in upstate New York. The other reason for the change: The 1,100 residents lobbied to get their own Post Office in 1888. Some of the names considered for the area were Pike’s Peak, Custer and Bayhead. Eventually, Inwood was chosen as the town’s name, but the origin of the name “Inwood” remains unknown.

The turning point for the town of Inwood came before it was even known as Inwood. While it was still known as Westville, in 1869, the LIRR constructed a stop in the town. In 1885, a strong economy aided in the further development with the primary business of shipping shellfish to international markets. The early 1900s saw the second surge of settlers. This time, they were Italian and Albanian immigrants. After World War II, the population increased dramatically and reached 7,975 in 2000. Today, Inwood is unincorporated and governed by the Town of Hempstead. See town listings for government offices.

LAWRENCE The history of Lawrence dates to 1870 when three brothers, Newbold, Alfred N. and George N. Lawrence, purchased all of the farms in the area known as Rockaway Neck. They wanted to turn the land into an exclusive residential area. The Lawrence brothers then donated enough money to construct a train station so the Long Island Rail Road could stop in their new township. Unfortunately, the lots didn’t sell because they were too expensive, so they redivided the land to accommodate smaller homes. Lawrence is also the home to Rock Hall, the residence of the former British governor of North Carolina, Josiah Martin. The mansion and servants’ quarters were designed by Timothy Clowes of Jamaica, Queens. The home was constructed in 1767 and is the finest example of Georgian colonial architecture on Long Island. Today, Rock Hall is a museum operated by the Town of Hempstead.

A dental hygienist Fran Meizler of Woodmere checked the teeth of children at the 2012 Give Kids a Smile Program sponsored by the Nassau County Dental Society held at the Cradle Aviatlon Museum in Garden City, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray looked on. Helping Meizler is Maureen Schojan of Rockville Centre. Woodmere is the largest community in the Five Towns, covering 2.6 square miles, and is also the most populous with 17,121 residents, according to the 2010 census. It is an unincorporated area in the Five Towns and is governed by the Town of Hempstead. In 1869, a retired liquor merchant and tycoon from Brooklyn, Samuel Wood, had a dream to build a town and name it after himself, so he purchased a plot of land and named it “Woodsburgh.” He developed the land into individual lots and sold it to millionaires to build summer homes. In 1890, the Village of Woodsburgh was forced to change its name to Woodmere because of the Post Office’s confusion with a village upstate, also named Woodsburgh. In 1901, a wealthy New York City investor, Robert L. Burton, bought the land in Woodmere and sold it piece-by-piece for smaller, residential lots.

WOODSBURGH In 1912, the smaller southern portion of Woodmere, known as Woodsburgh, officially became an incorporated village. Since Samuel Wood died a bachelor in 1878, he had no one to pass his land and vast fortune on to, so all of his holdings went to Abraham Hewlett, descendent of the first white settler of the area, who then sold Woodsburgh to Burton to divide into residential plots. Woodsburgh has one of the highest median family incomes on Long Island.

Chartered in 1947, the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library has gone through several renovations, the most recent nine years ago, to become the beautiful building it is today. The Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library is the repository for music and art in Nassau County. Their music and art collection began with donations from local music clubs and has grown to over 900 reference files, a circulating collection of over 10,000 titles, which includes scores, analytical performance editions of musical works, encompassing a wide range of musical tastes and levels, from amateur to the professional. The library’s large sound collection is in all formats: records, audio-cassette and CD's. Their art collection has over 12,000 slides, art index from 1959, large collection of art magazines, and extensive reference collection covering a large range of topics. During its last renovation, the community chose to build a professional concert hall. Through the generous donation of Herbert Z. and Rita Gold, Gold Hall was built. Gold Hall is a state-of-the-art concert hall with 196 seats, theatrical lighting, beautiful Steinway grand piano, exceptional acoustics, sound system and lighting booth. Each year a few more quality touches are added to the hall. It is a professional hall, pleasing to the eye, and yet understated. Those who have performed in the hall are amazed that it is part of a library. The Linda Pinsky Memorial Library Located in Young Israel of Woodmere 859 Peninsula Blvd., Woodmere 295-0950 The library is a lending library consisting of books in English of Jewish interest, for all ages. In addition, audio tapes on Torah topics may be borrowed. Membership is free. Open Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to Noon.

TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of approximately 760,000 people. Within the Town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Under the current system, the Town of Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Kate Murray — and a six-member Town Council. The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have a four-year term of office. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. - Eric Nazziola, MD Chairman, Emergency Medicine

Medical excellence is a matter of life and death. I take my job very seriously. In the Emergency Department, I’ve learned that medical excellence, customer service and well-running operations are matters of life and death. I’ve honed my skills at hospitals in New York, Washington and Dallas, and I came to St. John’s to make a difference. To have the best hospital possible you must have the best Emergency Department possible. Thanks to our partnership with a prestigious major New York City academic medical center, we’re about to do that and take a huge leap in the quality of care we offer. We’re enlarging the Emergency Department. And Fast Track, where the less critically ill are seen, will have a new home. Recently St. John's was designated a Stroke Center so that our community can rest assured that stroke patients, for whom every second counts, will be treated by doctors with the right medical expertise. Every day we’re working hard to improve patient satisfaction, reduce waiting time, and to bring you the latest in emergency care. I’m proud to be a leader in medical excellence at St. John’s.

For a referral to a physician please call 1-877-SJEH-DOC (1-877-753-4362). HEALTHCARE YOU CAN HAVE FAITH IN. PROUD Vicky Backus Nurse Practictioner Director, Emergency Department
