A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHERS

W

e are proud to present our annual Merrick Almanac and Newcomer’s Guide, a special supplement to the Merrick Herald.

Those of us who live here know that Merrick is a wonderful place. In this little book, you’ll find many of the organizations and institutions that make it so very special. The purpose of the Almanac is to expand upon what the Herald does each week: describe and celebrate this unique community and its many services and organizations. For newcomers, the Almanac provides a comprehensive guide to all the community has to offer. Longtime residents and business leaders will also find it a handy reference guide. We hope you enjoy this year’s Almanac. We’ve tried to make it the best guide to Merrick ever published. We also hope you enjoy reading the Merrick Herald 52 weeks a year. And no matter how far from home you find yourself, you can read an online version of the Herald at www.LIHerald.com. At our website, you can access the latest stories and special coverage of breaking news including election results.

A LETTER FROM THE CHAMBER

O

ur Chamber is a volunteer organization that requires the dedication of many individuals. The numerous events that our Chamber sponsors during the year are not only beneficial to our business community, but enhance our town as well. For example, the Merrick Chamber of Commerce provides the lighted snowflakes during the holiday season around town and our lighted gazebo at the train station. The beautification of our shopping areas continues to be an important part of what we do. This year we will again have music throughout the downtown shopping areas, available all year round. If you are a resident, please take advantage of the many events we sponsor throughout the year. Beginning this year, we are offering Merrick residents an opportunity to become a Resident Member of the Chamber for only $25. This membership will entitle you to discounts from the businesses of Merrick. It’s a great way to show your pride in Merrick and support of your local merchants. Our Halloween parade, which is taking place during our Fall Festival this year, is always a great success and provides a safer way for kids to “Trick or Treat” through our downtown shopping area. Participating merchants are thrilled to share their candy with the kids, while complimentary photos are taken and prizes for costumes are awarded. Let’s not forget about our Tree and Menorah Lightings. All are welcome to celebrate the season with us as we turn on the lights to our tree,

our Nativity scene and our Menorah. Girl Scouts serenade us while we drink hot chocolate or coffee and snack on baked goods from our local merchants. What a great way to start the holiday season! Our Annual Fall Festival is the perfect event for all ages! Randy Shotland Whether it’s rides, food or shopping, we have it covered. The petting zoo and pony rides are always a hit for the younger kids while the older ones enjoy shopping and eating. Thousands will come out for this event. Don’t miss it! Take the time to check out the local merchant that you have been curious about. We are very proud of our Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships to each of the three high schools in our town. Our Kids Festival, which takes place every spring, funds this program. It is the hard work of our board and many volunteers that make these events possible. If you would like to volunteer or join us, please contact us. We would love to have you. If you are a business owner, I urge you to become involved in our Chamber and take advantage of all we have to offer. The relationships forged here have proven repeatedly to be a valuable tool for small business owners and professionals alike. Please check the calendar for dates and times of our general and networking meetings by visiting our website at www.merrickchamber.org. These events are an excellent opportunity to meet other members, sharpen your skills and form relationships that can open doors. We have superb speakers lined up; speakers who are geared toward helping your business grow and prosper. Thank you for your support and remember to shop local! HISTORY

J

ohn Smith founded the Merricks in pre-Revolutionary times. Smith, who moved from Connecticut in 1643, bought land from the Merri-auke-ut Indians. The tribe, which was also known as Merric, Meroke and Merikoke, provided the name for the community. Merrick is remembered in those days as a picturesque wilderness of woods, plains, lakes, ponds and a river that ran along its western border. It is described as a rustic paradise. Also arriving in 1643 were John Carman and the Rev. Robert Fordham, both of whom bought 64,000 acres for $100 and other “trifling considerations.” England brought Merrick the George Hewlett family in 1649. Many of the Hewletts settled in the community, buying property from Jonathan Smith. John Smith Jr. built the first home in the area in 1687 near what is now Merrick Road and Central Boulevard. Six generations of Smiths lived there. Merrick remained a rural community for roughly two centuries. Merrick Path, which ran north to Hempstead and east to Babylon, was Merrick’s first road. In time, its name changed to Babylon Turnpike. Carrying mail and passengers between Jamaica and Babylon was a stage coach, which came through daily. Samuel Smith built a store on Babylon Turnpike near Meadowbrook Road, which served as the coach stop, general store and post office. The community flagpole was erected there during the Civil War. When the flag was raised, the villagers came from all

over to hear battlefront news. Today, the flag is in the collection of the Historical Society of the Merricks. In 1866, the South Shore Railroad was built through Merrick to Babylon. Charles Fox, a Merrick resident whose home once stood at Merrick Avenue and Merrick Road, was the railroad’s president. At the turn of the century, summer residents began to appear upon completion of the railroad. The Long Island Camp Meeting Association was the biggest summer group. Two young men, Edwin Cray Cammann and Richard Peabody Kent, opened the Merrick Library in 1891. A few years later, an association was formed and incorporated on April 27, 1897, to raise funds to support the library; a building was then erected. At the time, the area’s population was about 500. World War I accelerated growth in Merrick. Then, the 1920s hit. Houses went up on all sides, and prices were high. Merrick’s population quickly approached 5,000. The Merrick Woods development was considered a huge success. The Gables neighborhood, which served as home to many famous actors and actresses, was even more popular. Gables homes accented a “Spanish castle” motif. The railroad was electrified in 1925. At the same time, motor vehicles grew more common, particularly after the Sunrise Highway was built out to Amityville circa 1927. After World War II, the community’s population grew exponentially. Numerous schools, firehouses and houses of worship were added. Today, Merrick stands as one of the South Shore’s mostsought-after communities, with top-notch schools and everincreasing home values. Merrick’s downtown commerce zone on Merrick Avenue recently underwent a major revitalization. Many businesses refurbished their facades. Sidewalks were redone. Even the train station received a complete makeover.

David Weingrad/Herald

Coleman Country Day campers were ecstatic when New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford, No. 5, visited the Merrick camp in July and spent the day talking with campers, signing autographs and passing around his Super Bowl ring.

Providing families with education, resource information & the support needed to raise resilient children who are safe, conďŹ dent, non-violent and drug free

As we mourn the sudden tragic death on April 16th of Jason Gruen, a sophomore at Manhasset High School, we rally to support the foundation established in his name. Jason was a victim of IHSS (Idiopathic Hypertrophic Subaortic Stenosis), a heart disease that frequently affects otherwise healthy young people and all too often results in sudden death in spite of proper diagnosis and medication. At present there is no cure. The purpose of the Jason F. Gruen Research Foundation is to develop methods to remove the constant threat of arrhythmia and ultimate death of those aficted with IHSS and further, to identify those at risk.

TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of approximately 760,000 people. Within the Town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Under the current system, the Town of Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Kate Murray — and a six-member Town Council. The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have a four-year term of office. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
