Most of us aspire to having a lush, green lawn as the showcase of our properties.The front lawn can make a statement and indicate to passersby the property owners' personalities and design preferences.

Lawn care takes some dedication and hard work, but there are certain ways to cut down on the amount of effort required to maintain a landscape. By employing a few different shortcuts, you can have a healthy, lush lawn without spending all of your free time cutting the grass or pruning the trees.

Stop weeds at the start. Weeding is one of the most time-consuming parts of maintaining a lawn. Weeds can proliferate throughout the lawn if not addressed in a timely manner. Once weeds take root they can become a nuisance, so it's best to treat weeds before they even have a chance to sprout. Apply a preemergent weed control product as soon as possible in the spring and then reapply it about three months later to ensure weeds are eradicated. That equates to much less tedious lawn maintenance during the season.

Plant a urine-resistant grass. Having a dog and maintaining a lush lawn has always been a particular conundrum for homeowners. Dog urine is high in nitrogen. While nitrogen, when applied in the correct ratio, can be a lawn-growth stimulant, in the large concentration that occurs in pet urine, it causes the grass to dry up and burn, resulting in bare spots. Replanting with urine-resistant grasses can help cut down on the level of damage to the lawn from your own pet or pets that happen to make potty stops on your property.

The grasses most resistant to urine tend to be perennial ryegrasses and fescues.

Wake up and water. Watering in the early mornings saves time and energy in the long run by fostering a tougher, more drought-resistant lawn. If you water early in the day, less water will be lost to evaporation. Limit watering to a few times per week, and less if you have had adequate rain.

Avoid watering at night, which can expose the lawn to bacteria and attract insects.

Mow when the lawn is dry. It's not advisable to mow the lawn when it is wet. Slippery conditions can not only make it more dangerous to push a mower, but also slow down the time it can take to tackle the chore. The mower blades can become clogged and coated with wet grass clippings, necessitating stopping and starting the task. Another thing to consider is lawn diseases spread more readily through wet clippings. Stick to mowing when the lawn is completely dry.

Let clippings fly. Mulching mowers, or those that just distribute clippings on the lawn as you go, can be healthier for the grass. They will serve as fertilizer and redistribute nutrients to the lawn as they breakdown into the soil.

According to "The Organic Lawn Care Manual," leaving clippings on the lawn will fulfill about 25 percent of fertilizer requirements. Plus, you save time bagging up clippings.

Mow less often. Raise the mower's blade so that the grass is longer in between cuttings. The taller grass will shade the soil and block weeds from germinating. It also helps improve soil's moisture retention.

Don't cut corners. Adjusting a landscape design to have arches and curves can reduce the time it takes to mow and edge a property. Hard corners in a landscape will require more time to keep straight and pristine.

Caring for a lawn can take less time and effort than you think.

dding an accent wall is a stylish touch for your home. Best of all? It doesn't have to be pricey or complicated to be pretty.

"Accent walls are very versatile and great in small or open plan spaces, as they can help to define an area," says do-ityourself expert Kevin Pleasants, noting you can use a bold paint in a corner to define a home office within a larger room.

"If you want to define a sleeping area, fabric or a tapestry can be hung on the wall behind the bed to create a cozy nook," says Pleasants, who recommends installing a metal or wire hanging rack, like one used for hanging curtains.

Adding paint is the easiest accent wall to create. The job is typically easy to do and low budget — think a few gallons of paint as well as the right tools.

"The most common accent walls are a deep color in the same family as the color of the rest of the rooms," says Scott Specker, owner of Five Star Painting, mentioning the accent wall should "enhance and brighten" the room.

He recommends accenting a wall with straight lines that's a focal point in the room and says patterns work well in kids' rooms.

Accent walls are an easy, affordable way to add style to a room.

One more paint tip from Pleasants: "If your paint isn't that bold, you may need to apply a white base coat first."

The concept of an accent wall may have started with paint but that concept has expanded.

"I recommend hand-painted murals, wallpaper and tile," says interior designer, Mikel Welch of Mikel Welch Designs, the set designer and on-air design expert for "Steve Harvey."

Wallpaper options include hand painted wallpaper, as well as removable wallpaper, which is great for rental properties and apartments since the removable paper is, "like a sticker that you can place anywhere

and won't damage the wall when you take it off," says Welch.

He recommends installing antique mirrored glass to a wall to "add interest and character" to the space. Local glass and hardware stores sell 12-by-12-inch panels of glass that homeowners can install themselves.

In addition to mirrors, you can also install tiles on a wall.

These wall options, "can take less than a day to install and are so simple and easy that anyone can do it," says Welch.

al feature, or to instill a sense of the extraordinary in an otherwise completely ordinary space.

Set a budget. Highlighting a wall with paint, tile, wallpaper or other designs ranges from affordable to a little pricey. "It depends on the request and complexity," says Specker, noting that prices can range from $150 to over $1,000.

Choose a focal point. Here's how you decide which wall to accent: "Consider where you want the focus to be in your room, or where the eye is naturally drawn," says Pleasants, suggesting walls with architectural significance like a fireplace, make great accent walls.

Have a plan. It's easier to change a design before you've bought the supplies or done a lot of work. "Make sure you know what you want before you start," says Specker.

Consider lighting. Play up your accent wall with clever lighting. Pleasants recommends installing a strip light along the bottom of the wall for soft lighting or mounting spotlights overhead to draw the eye to the wall's features.

Know your wall materials. Want to hang mirrors, frames or artwork on your accent wall? Consider whether the wall is load-bearing or a partition wall. "Some interior walls or dry walls are there simply to separate the room and have no structural purpose, so are often not strong enough to support heavier objects," says Pleasants, mentioning that you might have to buy specialist drill bits and extra equipment to hang items on partition walls. n

to growing in adverse conditions, including especially hot temperatures. When such conditions arise, weeds establish deep roots while the roots of the grass can easily die off.

Instead, when watering, wet the soil to a depth of four to six inches. This helps grass to establish strong root systems that will help lawns overpower pesky weeds.

Time weed killers. Whether you manually remove weeds or apply weed killers, timing is key. Combat weeds in the early spring before they have a time to fully form and start proliferating through seed dispersement. Once seeds spread, their growth is difficult to control.

Recognize that no single herbicide or weeding tactic will work for every type of weed. Broadleaf weeds, like dandelions, unwanted grasses, and sedges are the three most common types of weeds. You will have to adapt based on the type of weed that is most prevalent in their lawns.

Watch fertilizer amounts. Strike a balance with fertilizer, finding the right amount to deliver continuous nutrition to the lawn, but not overfeed it so that weeds can thrive. Many lawns only require fertilizer once or twice annually, in the autumn and spring.

By following these guidelines, you can prevent the proliferation of unsightly and potentially harmful weeds. n

You may spend countless hours and weekends coping with weeds without truly getting to the root of the problem.

However, preventing weed growth need not be so difficult.

According to the experts at “This Old House”and The Family Handyman, the secret to preventing weeds is to maintain a thick, healthy lawn. A vigorously growing lawn will crowd out weeds and block the sun weed seeds need to germinate and thrive.

As a result, fewer herbicides may be needed and homeowners can spend less time on their hands and knees pulling out weeds.

Mow at the right height. Crabgrass is a notoriously virulent weed that can quickly snuff out blades of grass. Crabgrass likes hot, dry conditions, and it only takes one plant to spread the seeds that can overtake the lawn. Preventing these conditions can stop crabgrass from flourishing.

Mowing at higher heights and leaving grass blades taller can shade the soil, helping to prevent the germination of crabgrass. Shady conditions also will help the soil retain moisture and prevent the arid conditions crabgrass likes so much.

How do you spring ahead and enter into a kitchen remodel equipped with all the tools necessary to keep both the water and project running smoothly?

Springtime is the popular season of remodeling. Contractors and designers get busy, and so should you. A well-prepared customer helps move a project along faster, easier, and more efficiently.

Do your homework. Create an idea folder of materials, products, and architectural features from kitchens that appeal to you. Not sure of your personal aesthetic? A collection of favorite images will ultimately reveal that you actually do have a style! As you’re preparing an image portfolio, consider hiring a designer/contractor to coordinate this large undertaking.

Many consumers mistakenly believe that hiring individual sub-contractors for each phase of a project will save them money. Unless you are an experienced General Contractor, acting as your own “GC” can be a costly error!

A professional kitchen designer will

identify problem areas in your existing kitchen and work toward planning a workspace that is functional, comfortable, and efficient. Create and prioritize a list of “must haves” and “wish fors” from which the designer can proceed.

Realize that a portion of your budget should be earmarked for bringing electrical up to code, plumbing up to standard, and “shoring up” any structural issues that may arise.
