Hello, neighbors! We are proud to present our annual Baldwin Guide, a special supplement to the Baldwin Herald. Those of us who live here know that Baldwin is a wonderful place. In this compact book, you’ll find many of the organizations and institutions that make it so very special. We hope you enjoy this year’s Guide. We’ve tried to make it the best guide Baldwin ever published. We also hope you enjoy reading the Baldwin Herald 52 weeks a year. living in the
Baldwin
When traveling on the South Shore, it’s easy for residents of neighboring communities to pass through Baldwin without appreciating all the community has to offer. If the lights on Sunrise Highway or Merrick Road are green, they might be in Rockville Centre or Freeport before the song on the radio is over. While Baldwin itself might not get the acclaim or attention it deserves on a larger level, there’s plenty happening in a community that’s trending upwards. When those same drivers are on Grand Avenue, they might turn north and find Baldwin Public Library, stop inside and find one of the institution’s hundreds of programs for people of all ages taking place, or use its vast resource catalog, or maybe even check out a movie or book just for fun. Going north would lead those drivers to the Long Island Rail Road station at the intersection of Sunrise Highway. The Baldwin Community Garden, which opened in June 2014, is tucked away off Grand, directly behind the always-interesting Baldwin Historical Museum
(open Sunday afternoons). The garden, overseen by community volunteers, is a hub for social gatherings, community service, beautiful scenery and a place to grow your favorite vegetables. Baldwin High School is a few blocks north and is where thousands of students attend classes each year. It’s also the culmination of children’s academic careers in Baldwin after completing their studies at one of the community’s five elementary schools (grades kindergarten through five) and middle school (grades six through eight). The Baldwin community is comprised of roughly 24,000 people, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, and many of them are part of volunteer organizations that work tirelessly to make the neighborhood a better place. A full list of those organizations can be found on pages 24-25. Baldwin is continuing to grow, evolve and develop, and pretty soon those drivers won’t be able to simply pass through the community without checking out any local event, businesses or available real estate.

Take a trip
into the past
The land that is today called Baldwin was first inhabited by the Merrick tribe of Native Americans. The Merricks survived primarily through trade with other tribes. This dependence on trade allowed early European settlers to persuade the Merricks to trade away their land. The Merricks formally lost all their land when chief Tackapausha of the Massapequa tribe signed a treaty with English settlers Robert Fordham and John Carman in 1643, which gave the English all of the Hempstead Town area. In the 1660s, the town of Baldwin was a piece of land between Parsonage Creek and Milburn Creek called Hicks Neck, named after early resident John Hicks. The community was strengthened in 1686 when John Pine constructed a grist mill, attracting settlers and industry. For most early
residents, however, farming and fishing remained the primary occupations. The Revolutionary War caused a split between Hicks Neck residents due to differing political beliefs, but following the war, the area prospered as an agricultural center. Bethel Chapel was constructed on St. Luke’s Place in 1810 and served as the first church and schoolhouse of Hicks Neck. Another man who brought activity and growth to Hicks Neck was John Lott, who ran both Lott’s Inn and Lott’s Landing seaport from the early to mid-1800s. Lott’s property was located in an area of Hicks Neck north of Atlantic Avenue and west of Milburn Creek, which was known by the 1830s as Milburn. Around the same time, Baldwin’s namesake Baldwin family, first moved into town. Thomas
Baldwin quickly became a pillar of the community, running a sawmill, a hotel and a general store. Thomas’s son Francis, an architect, followed in his father’s tradition by building many homes in Baldwin and making donations to local schools and churches. His funeral in 1890 is said to have been the largest in Baldwin’s history. The Baldwin family’s role in the community was so great that in 1855, only 25 years after Thomas Baldwin had moved there, the village was named Baldwinsville. By the end of the century, the village included the Milburn area, and its name had been shortened to Baldwin. In 1867, the first train of the South Side Railroad (later part of the Long Island Rail Road) passed through Baldwin, and four years later Baldwin constructed its own post office Continued on next page

near the train station. 1896 saw the establishment of the Baldwin Fire Department. The village was growing, and by 1890 the population had exceeded 1,200. Albert and Arthur Heinrich, two brothers from Baldwin, made history in 1910 by building and flying the first successful American monoplane (a one-winged plane, as opposed to a biplane). The Heinrichs went on to enjoy lucrative careers in airplane construction, which included building warplanes for World War I in a factory right in Baldwin. Two local newspapers, the “Daily Review Star” and the “Baldwin Citizen,” started up in Baldwin in the 1920s. There was plenty to report, thanks to the high volume of liquor smuggling occurring in Baldwin’s ports during Prohibition. The Depression was just as damaging to Baldwin residents as it was to most other Americans. A number of community groups formed to combat the

unemployment and poverty of the times, and Baldwin continued to grow. During World War II, a Baldwin resident, Lt. Bernard James Ray, earned a posthumous Congressional Medal of Honor when he strapped himself with explosives and charged an enemy blockade. The close of the war saw another large increase in Baldwin’s population when soldiers returned home seeking employment. The village continued to modernize in an attempt to accommodate its growing population. In 1957, the train tracks were raised onto a platform, and throughout the 1950s meadow land was filled in so that more homes could be built. In 1962, the Baldwin Public Library opened its doors. By 1970, Baldwin’s population was over 24,000. In July 2006, Baldwin was voted No. 25 out of 100 “Top Places to Live” in the United States and No. 1 on Long Island by Money Magazine.
Island.
In the summer of 2009, Baldwin hosted its first-ever fireworks show — becoming one of the few non-villages in Nassau to do so. The Baldwin Historical Society reopened the community’s historical museum in January 2014 after it was closed for roughly 13 years. The museum boasts centuries of Baldwin’s history and features artifacts dating back to the 18th century. Today, Baldwin is a thriving suburban community, with numerous schools and fine restaurants. It is home to the Nassau County Police Department’s 1st Precinct, and features several lovely parks. Baldwin stands as an example of a modern Long Island suburb whose history will only continue to grow as it progresses through the 21st century.

The Baldwin Union Free School District includes almost all of the unincorporated area
known as Baldwin, as well as some parts of Freeport, Rockville Centre and South Hempstead. The district measures 4.3 square miles and educates roughly 5,500 students in grades kindergarten through 12, an enrollment school officials predict will grow over the next few years. There are five elementary schools, one middle school for grades six, seven and eight, and one high school for grades nine to 12. All central administrative services are headquartered in the district office on Hastings Street just west of Milburn Avenue. A five-member elected school board acts as the community’s representative to the district and is responsible for its annual operating budget. Board members serve three-year terms without pay. Board elections and budget votes are conducted in May. The board meets on the second Wednesday of each month. Board meetings for the 2017-2018 school year are updated on the Baldwin School District website baldwinschools.org. In 2013, 92 percent of students graduated high school who started ninth grade four years earlier.

The Senior Life in P
eople of all ages call Baldwin home, but it’s the seniors living here who give this community a sense of history and perspective. To maintain that committment to the past, Baldwin offers many services and programs for the older adults in the community. Whether you want to catch a movie during the summer movie series hosted by the Chamber of Commerce or play a pick up game of softball at Baldwin Park, seniors always have something fun to do that will make them feel proud of their community.

Keeping Baldwin beautiful takes many family members working together. Above, Varda Cervone and her husband Frank Facciola, leader of Boy Scout Troop 204, Den 9 from Oceanside picked up trash and plastics with Joshua, 8, Ryan, 7, Giovanna, 7, and Michael, 9.
Unlike many other areas in solidly developed Nassau County, Baldwin is blessed with many parks, open spaces and quiet places for families to enjoy the outdoors. Another jewel in Baldwin is Baldwin Park, located on the water in Baldwin Harbor. It’s a
quiet, relaxing place to take in a walk at sunset or find a pickup softball game on the various fields overlooking Parsonage Cove. After a day in the park, don’t forget to refuel with some delicious items at the Sweet & Savory Cafe.

Town of hempsTead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Anthony Santino — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. towN of Hempstead
