oldest in New York state and has continuously educated students for more than 200 years. The districts earliest students were taught in a rural one-room schoolhouse on the northwest corner of Front Street and Newbridge Avenue, now East Meadow Avenue. Before Nassau University Medical Center was the 19-story hospital it is today, it was a 200bed community hospital called Meadowbrook Hospital. It opened in 1935 and was not reconstructed and renamed until 1970. Eisenhower Park is roughly 1.46 square miles and larger than Manhattan’s Central Park, which is roughly 1.32 square miles. Matt Serra, former UFC Welterweight Champion, grew up in East Meadow before establishing his mixed martial arts training centers on Long Island. This year, he was accepted into the UFC Hall of Fame. Joy Mangano, the entrepreneur and inventor of the self-wringing Miracle Mop, was born in East Meadow in 1956. Jenna Ushkowitz, who played the character Tina Cohen-Chang on the Fox comedy-drama series “Glee,” was raised in East Meadow, moving from Seoul, South Korea, after she was adopted at 3, in 1989. Snapple was previously headquartered in East Meadow before moving to its corporate office in Plano, Texas. The office is now occupied by the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island. Eleanor Roosevelt, the former First Lady of the U.S., spent part of her childhood in East Meadow.

In the middle of Nassau County lies a hamlet, rich with diversity, parks, organizations and family-owned businesses. It thrives with the help of community leaders and key members who ensure that children, veterans and families’ needs and rights are met. According to the census, 38,000 people — 14 percent Hispanic or Latino, 12 percent Asian, 5 percent African-American and 69 percent white — call the small, yet humble hamlet home: East Meadow. Schools and library The East Meadow community has one public school district, comprised of two high schools, two middle schools and five elementary schools, which also take in students from Salisbury. The schools are East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools, Woodland and W.T. Clarke middle schools, and Barnum Woods, Bowling Green, McVey, Meadowbrook and Parkway elementary schools. The elementary level sees students from kindergarten — the first full-kindergarten year started in 2015 — through fifth grade, and the middle schools take in sixth through eighth grade. The district’s superintendent Dr. Kenneth Card Jr. is in his second year on the job and is also a Navy veteran and 15-year administrator prior to his tenure at East Meadow. The district appointed Card after a year-long search for a new leader. The East Meadow PTA Council, a coalition of school PTAs, is led by President Robin Fitzpatrick. East Meadow is also home to three parochial schools and eight nursery schools. The East Meadow Public Library is renowned for its wide array of programs, services and vast book collection. After the community approved a historic, first-time school and library joint bond in March 2017, the library’s approved $14.6 million is slated for infrastructure upgrades, a new all-purpose room/theater, and an outdoor reading garden to accommodate patrons. The library’s current director is Carol Probeyahn. Continued on next page

The East Meadow Fire Department headquarters is on East Meadow Avenue, and the department has roughly 260 volunteers. It is led by four commissioners, and has five fire stations, four engine companies, two ladder companies, one rescue company, a ladies’ auxiliary unit, a paramedic fly car program and a safety officers program. Its current chief is Philip Fertitta. Parks and recreation Of all parks in the East Meadow community, none is more recognizable than Eisenhower Park. At 930 acres, it is larger than New York City’s Central Park, and has dozens of athletic fields, 16 lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, three 18hole golf courses, picnic areas and fitness trails. Eisenhower Park is also the home of the Nassau County Aquatic Center, which has a 50-meter pool. Built in 1998, the swimming facility hosted the Goodwill Games, and now hosts other major swimming competitions. The Twin Rinks Ice Center opened to the public in the summer of 2014, adjacent to the Aquatic Center. It’s an 80,000-square-foot indoor facility with two indoor ice rinks, an outdoor rink and a sports recreational center. Other parks in East Meadow include

he East Meadow Public Library does more than just hold books. Its programs and special events for all ages, art exhibits, reference service, magazines, college catalogs, civil-service tests, eBooks, iPads and more draw thousands of participants from across Nassau County. Located in the heart of East Meadow on East Meadow Avenue and Front Street, its accessibility allows passersby to stop in for a book or program. Throughout its time in the community, the library has been able to meet its patrons’ needs. To enhance its services, the library is undergoing major renovations this year — for the first time since the early 1980s — after the community passed a $14.6 million bond in March 2017. Additions will include a new community reading area and an all-purpose room that will host an array of events such as concerts and guest author readings. The Library Board meets the first Wednesday of each month at 8 p.m. Meetings are open to the public. To find out more about the library or its scheduled programming, visit the library’s website at www.eastmeadow.info.

Unlike many other areas in Nassau County, East Meadow boasts several parks, open spaces and quiet places for families to enjoy the outdoors. Not far from East Meadow, there are many other parks and recreational facilities in Merrick, Westbury and Bellmore, not to mention the crown jewel of New York State Parks, Jones Beach. East Meadow’s Eisenhower Park is 930 acres, larger than Manhattan’s Central Park. Eisenhower includes the Harry Chapman Lakeside Theatre, where the county arranges the annual Summer Music Concert Series. The theater also
hosts summer movie screenings, concerts for several organizations and services for veterans and their families. Another jewel in East Meadow is Speno Memorial Park, which has numerous facilities for fun, including basketball, handball, shuffleboard and tennis courts, a playground, a vita course and multipurpose fields. Jones Beach, just 15 minutes south, has 6.5 miles of white-sand ocean beach, with food, leisure activities and a nature center. See the list on this page of all the local and nearby places to enjoy the outdoors.

Military families find a home at Mitchel Manor
By Brian Stieglitz
A
t mid-afternoon on Valentine’s Day 2018, a van pulled up at one of the matching beige homes that make up the Mitchel Manor community in East Meadow. Standing outside his home was 39-year-old Staff Sgt. Wayne Stevens, still in his Army Reserves uniform after working earlier that day. Lola, Wayne’s wife of almost 10 years, came out from the driver’s seat, followed by four more girls who ran to their father, one after the other. It has been 10 years not only since Lola and Wayne started dating, but also since Wayne joined the Army. Mitchel Manor is a gated community living center for those serving in the U.S. military, like Stevens, who moved there in 2011. Stevens is a reservist with the U.S. Armed Forces and part of a counterterrorist task force called Empire Shield, in which he helps local authorities maintain security at major travel hubs like Pennsylvania Station and Madison Square Garden. Stevens sought a job in advertisingafter graduating from St. John’s in 2002, while also raising Jalen, his first child from another relationship, and pursuing his dream of becoming on actor. In 2008, he decided to “hit the reset button,” he said, moving with Jalen to Minnesota, where he eventually joined the Army. “I never thought I’d get involved [in the military] from a patriotic standpoint,” he said, though he added that the thought of serving his country had humbled him. After three years of service, Stevens moved to Mitchel Manor so he could settle down with his family and be close to his new job with Empire Shield. Many young soldiers and their families move there from across the country to establish a home surrounded by their fellow service members. Brad Bucher and his wife, Jennifer, made the move roughly two years ago after spending three years in Germany, where Bucher served in the U.S. Armed Forces in Wiesbaden. Bucher grew up in Greenbay, Wisc., where he met Jennifer at a video store in 1995. He enlisted in the Marines Reserves in 1990 at 20, before climbing the ranks in the National Guard. Since then, his military career has taken him to Iraq, Indiana, Kosovo, Germany and,

lastly, Long Island; here he works at the Armed Forces Reserves Center in Farmingdale. “Living here helps the boys,” Bucher said of Mitchel Manor, referring to his two kids Ryan, 14, and Jake, 18. He added that they moved in the middle of a school year, but being surrounded by other military families gave Ryan and Jake a sense of belonging and allowed them to make friends with other children of service members.

On Valentine’s Day, Wayne Stevens, 39, of East Meadow, greeted his wife, Lola. They started dating 10 years ago, at what Stevens described as a pivotal time in his life, because it was also when he joined the Army.

More than just a race
A look inside the Long Island marathon By Brian Stieglitz
T
he streets of Nassau County’s Hub fill with thousands of runners who compete in the Long Island Marathon or one of four shorter races each spring. The marathon dates back to the inaugural Macombs Dam Park Marathon in the Bronx in 1958. That race was later renamed the Cherry Tree Marathon, but continued to be run in the Bronx until 1970, when it moved to Central Park. It was later named the Earth Day Marathon, and eventually moved from Manhattan to Roosevelt Raceway, and then to Eisenhower Park. Today it includes a one-mile race, a 5K, a 10K, a half-marathon, a full marathon, a sports and fitness expo and a post-race festival. At the 2018 marathon, on May 5 and 6, one runner, Nestor Barrezueta, 83, of East Meadow, taped a sheet of paper to his running clothes, with the message, “Beat Parkinson’s. Walk! Walk!” Barrezueta ran the 10K with his daughter, Sandi Paulik, 53, and his granddaughter, Anna Paulik, 22. He has battled Parkinson’s disease for 20 years, but he said he didn’t want it to keep him from following his passion. “I like challenges,” he said. “And I like running. If I didn’t move, I’d die.” Doctors told Barrezueta that the nervous disorder could have damaged his legs to the point that he would need to rely on a wheelchair, Sandi said. She added, however, that because he walks so often, he has strengthened his leg muscles enough to support his upper body. Many of the competitors shared similar stories, whether they
were stepping up to their first starting line or returning to take part in a Long Island tradition. Peter Hawkins, 53, a wheelchair competitor from Malverne, was the first to cross the finish line of the marathon on May 6, in 2 hours, 21 minutes, 11 seconds. The fastest male runner was Thomas Rammelkamp, 28, of Falls Church, Va., who finished in 2:33.13, and Gabrielle Russo, 33, of Patchogue, finished first among the female runners, in 2:50:40. For the third year, the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce set up shop at the festival and greeted residents and runners. The first year the members took part, freezing rain pounded down on the event. But Executive Secretary Anthony Sereno said the organization wanted to come back. “It shows how much East Meadow has to offer,” he said. P.J. Diskin, 62, of Mineola, and Robyn Kreiner, 34, of Huntington Station, stopped at the chamber’s booth, where they were given free merchandise and bagels from Bagelicious. Both runners compete in races across Long Island, and called the Long Island Marathon one of their favorites. As Adriana Staiano, 55, of East Meadow, made her way toward the group, she agreed, saying, “Nassau County has a lot of opportunities for runners.” She competes with a group called Runners Edge, and said that the Long Island Marathon stands out among area races because it offers the varying views of the South Shore, plenty of room for spectators and the post-race festival.

EMCon offers intimate environment for fantasy lovers By Jennifer Corr

n addition to its rows of books, author visits and literature discussion, the East Meadow Public Library is home to many cultural activities. One that is held each spring is the library’s own anime festival and comic convention known as EMCon. Residents of Queens, Connecticut and Long Island’s East End make the drive for the growing event. There were 3,800 guests in attendance this year, enjoying the art of over 40 artists and performances by dancers, singers and tai chi practitioners, among other performers. Attendees also enjoyed game tournaments, drawing sessions, anime screenings, a cosplay masquerade, anime lectures, manga and anime discussions. What makes EM Con different from most conventions, however, is the fact that admission is free. “With people who can’t afford to go to Comic-Con or people who don’t really know what a convention is, I tell them to start out at EMCon,” said Victoria Rossi, of Centereach, who has attended EMCon for two years. “It’s free to go in; you don’t pay admission. Also, it’s more one on one. Say there is a voice actor there; you can actually talk to the voice actor.” This convention, unlike others such as Comic-Con, is geared towards teenagers, said Jude Schanzer, the director of public relations. “It offers a safe environment for East Meadow teenagers, or all teenagers, to enjoy the art form they relate to,” Schanzer said. “It’s an educational event. It deals with art, culture.” The East Meadow Public Library has held EMCon for eight years. What once was a one-day event has turned into a popular, three-day affair. It is funded through the East Meadow Public Library budget and grants. “Our first EM Con was one day and we had 250 people here,” Schanzer said. “Now we run a Saturday,
a Sunday and a Friday night, and we have 3,800 to 4,000 people. Our first EM Con had a few artists and now we have 40 artists and educators.” The 2018 EM Con kicked off with a Friday night pre-party at 7:30 p.m., at which the guests watched a movie and a performance. Most were wearing pajamas since it was a laid-back night. On Saturdays and Sundays there was an art gallery in a tent outside the library, skit performances, cosplay competitions, tai chi demonstrations and drumming. “It’s a community convention,” said Kelly Gordon, library’s art director and the event co-coordinator of the event. “It’s all about education. There are so many opportunities here to learn about other cultures and meet new people at local venue.”

ulinary Delights joins fine dining with fundraising and charity as one of the biggest events held by the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce. However, President Frank Camarano said, the event isn’t about the chamber. “It’s about the community helping us to give back and help others,” he said. “Lyndsey and Rosemary put so much effort into this event each year.” Rosemary Basmajian and Lyndsey Gallagher are co-chairing the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce’s biggest annual fundraiser, to be held this year on Sept. 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Carltun at Eisenhower Park. In its 16th year, the event has one goal: to raise money for local charitable organizations. Each year, Gallagher said, 25 to 30 local restaurants — and others from across Long Island — offer portions of their best dishes and desserts for attendees to taste. This year’s beneficiaries will be America’s VetDogs, Kiwanis of East Meadow Kamp Kiwanis, Nassau/Suffolk Autism Society and the Nassau University Medical Center Pediatric Department. America’s VetDogs was founded by the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind in 2003 to help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity. Service dogs are trained to help ease disabilities for veterans with blindness, spinal cord injuries, hearing impairments, peripheral and central balance disorders, limb loss,
traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. Today, the organization is faced with increased demands from veterans of all eras, active military personnel, first responders and others wounded in the line of duty. Community service is the primary goal of the Kiwanis Club of East Meadow, which sends 36 children each year to the Kamp Kiwanis sleep-away camp. The
of the oldest autism organization that is celebrating its 51st Anniversary. Last, the primary-care pediatricians at Nassau University Medical Center provide a range of services for children, including comprehensive outpatient services, wellbaby and well-child checkups, childhood vaccines, sick child visits, screenings for developmental problems and education on adolescent health issues.

The Town of Hempstead’s Department of Senior Enrichment provides an array of services for seniors across Nassau County, including recreational programs and centers. The East Meadow Senior Center had provided services to its members for more than 25 years before the Town of Hempstead announced its closing in December 2016. The center soon found a new home when it merged with the Salisbury location in January. It now forms the Salisbury/ East Meadow Senior Center. The joint center meets at the Salisbury center on 460 Salisbury Park Drive, and it caters to more than 100 members and hosts programs for veterans, students and the community.

Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Democrat Laura Gillen — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget.
