a letter from the
publisher
hello, residents!
We are proud to present our annual Five Towns Guide, a special supplement to the Nassau Herald. Those of us who live here know that the Five Towns is a wonderful place. In this compact book, you’ll find many of the organizations and institutions that make it so very special. The purpose of the Guide is to expand upon what the Nassau Herald does each week: describe and celebrate this unique community and its many services and organizations. For newcomers, the Guide provides a comprehensive look at all the Five Towns has to offer. Longtime Stuart residents and business leaders will also find it a handy Richner reference. We hope you enjoy this year’s Guide. We’ve tried to make it the best guide we’ve ever published. We also hope you enjoy reading the Nassau Herald 52 weeks a year. And no matter how far from home you find yourself, you can read an online version of the Herald at www.LIHerald.com. At our website, you can access the latest stories and special coverage of breaking news including election results. Stuart Richner Publisher
P.S. If you’re not currently receiving the Herald by mail each week, please see our ad on Page 5 for subscription information, or find us online at www.liherald.com/subscribe.

A Message from the Hewlett-Woodmere
Business AssociAtion Dear Residents:
T
he HewlettWoodmere Business Association was formed to bring together merchants and professionals conducting business in the hamlets of Hewlett and Woodmere, including North Woodmere, served by School District 14. Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association members support programs throughout the school district, local organizations David Friedman and civic associations. We aim to foster awareness from adjoining communities as to our merchandise, activities and services offered in the two villages. The HWBA plans to increase internet marketing through the use of our current website and a secondary site under construction, ShopHewlettWoodmere.com. We enjoy the support of Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, County Legislator Howard Kopel, County Executive Laura Curran, Town Supervisor Laura Gillen, State Sen. Todd Kaminsky and State Assembywoman Melissa Miller. It is these public officials and our residents who look to an active business association to make our community a more attractive place to reside.
The HWBA has become an integral part of the community and this year has fostered Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations, rebuilding of the Veteran’s Memorial Plaza, organized the Memorial Day parade and sponsored Kids Night Out. Our award-winning school district, refurbished library and the evolving shopping areas are what help to unite us as a vibrant community. We invite you to eat in our local restaurants, shop our boutiques and utilize our service businesses to help us remain a strong hub of business.

The Cedarhurst Business Improvement District, formed in 1993, and works in close collaboration with retail and restaurant establishments, property owners and businesses, to provide assistance as well as expertise on how to improve Steve Schneider the shopping, dining and business experience. Cedarhurst offers free weekend parking year-round in all 10 municipal parking fields, and at other designated times during the winter holiday season. The BID has an informative and user-friendly website — www.shopcedarhurst.com — and we welcome any suggestions for improving it and providing information you find useful. The BID is best known for its planning and execution of two enormously successful events: the annual Summer Sidewalk Sale and Black Friday/Saturday Night Midnight Madness. Those two events bring in many thousands of people to Cedarhurst and are
very popular, and extremely well attended. The Cedarhurst BID welcomes your thoughts and suggestions on making shopping in the village better for all of us. Please email us at info@shopcedarhurst.com with your ideas and input on how to make the Cedarhurst business district the best that it can be.

Atlantic Beach Established as a community in 1926, the one-square-mile village was incorporated in 1962. Beach clubs abound along the shoreline and about 525 single-family houses are home to roughly 1,900 residents. The village, governed by a mayor and four trustees, is within the boundaries of the Lawrence School District. The Atlantic Beach Bridge, operated by the Nassau County Bridge Authority, connects the barrier island with the mainland. The Atlantic Beach Rescue Squad is a trained group of volunteers who aid with emergencies on the water and land. Fire protection is provided mainly by the Long Beach Fire Department, along with mutual aid from nearby fire departments. The adjoining communities of East Atlantic Beach and Atlantic Beach Estates are unincorporated sections of the Town of Hempstead. Television shows “Royal Pains” and The Sopranos” taped in the village, as did the film “Goodfellas.” The fictional Corleone estate from “The Godfather” and the fictional beach club in the movie “The Flamingo Kid” were both set in Atlantic Beach. Cedarhurst Best known for its shopping along Central and Cedarhurst avenues, the one-square-mile village, according to local lore, took its name from the grove, or “hurst.” of cedar trees near the post office. The late Red Holzman, who coached the Knicks to their only two NBA championships, lived on Oceanpoint Avenue, named Red Holzman Way in his honor. Mickey Hart, one of the two longtime drummers for the Grateful Dead, grew up in Cedarhurst and graduated from Lawrence High School. Lawrence School District. The Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department provides fire protection for an estimated 6,650 residents, 1,629 single-family homes, a variety of apartment buildings and the many commercial enterprises, which are supported by an active Business Improvement District. Lawrence The village, governed by a mayor and four trustees, operates the Lawrence Yacht & Country Club, the only municipally owned golf and tennis club that includes a marina Walking on Central Avenue, one might see renowned criminal lawyer and resident Ben Brafman. Shoe magnate Steve Madden and rock guitarist Leslie West grew up in Lawrence, and it is where real-life characters Henry and Karen Hill, played by Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco in the movie “Goodfellas,” lived with her parents when they were newlyweds. Home to the Peninsula Public Library, the village is served by the Lawrence School District, and fire protection is provided by the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department. About 6,480 people live in the village, and there are an estimated 1,600 single-family homes. Along Central Avenue, there are many places to shop and eat. Hewlett Hewlett, an unincorported hamlet in the Town of Hempstead, is home to Nassau County’s Grant Park and the newly renovated 4th Precinct building, both at Sheridan Avenue and Broadway, and about 6,300 people, multiple dewllings and 2,170 single-family homes.
Broadway features several businesses and restaurants, along with Veterans Memorial Plaza, where several events, including the community menorah and Christmas tree lightings, are held. The Hewlett-Woodmere School District, the Hewlett Fire Department, the Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association, a group of merchants from both communities, helps to organize the Memorial Day parade and other events in conjunction with the school district and local government officials. Jim Steinman, the music producer famous for producing the classic “Bat out of Hell” album by Meatloaf, Oscarwinning film director Errol Morris, artist Ross Bleckner and sports writer and broadcaster Tony Kornheiser all graduated from Hewlett High School. The area includes three small villages: Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Bay Park and Hewlett Neck, each of which are governed by a mayor and village board. The Seawane Club is in Hewlett Harbor. Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls is in Hewlett Bay Park. Only three-quarters of a square mile, Hewlett Neck is the smallest of the trio. Inwood Home to the Inwood Country Club, where years ago legendary golfers Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan played, the Town of Hempstead hamlet hosted the 1921 PGA Championship and the 1923 U.S. Open. Serviced by the Lawrence School District and its own fire department, there are about 9,500 residents, 2,235 singlefamily homes and a variety of apartment buildings. in Inwood, as well as Ray Barbuti, a two-time gold medalist at the 1928 Olympics. Its history includes multiple waves of settlers, from fishermen to farmers, in the early 1800s. Later in the 19th century, the community was known as Westville. When the residents lobbied for a post office in 1888, the name had to be changed so as not to be confused with upstate Westville. Several names were considered, but Inwood was chosen. Its origin remains a mystery. In the 1890s, Italian and Albanian immigrants were part of the second surge. Through the years, the community has come to include a significant African-American and Hispanic population. Woodmere Covering 2.6 square miles, Woodmere, a Town of Hempstead hamlet, is the largest Five Towns community, and the most populous, with an estimated 17,215 residents, multiple dewllings about 4,395 singe-family homes. Its portion of Broadway also includes several businesses and eateries. Fire protection is provided by the Woodmere Fire Department. Woodmere is home to Lawrence Woodmere Academy,
a private nonsectarian school that has grades K to12, and Davis Renov Stahler Yeshiva for Boys. Fashion designer Donna Karan (Hewlett High 1966), comedy writer Alan Zweibel, and Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office, were Woodmere residents. Renowned children’s writer David Adler, author of the Cam Jensen series, is a resident. The smaller southern portion of Woodmere is known as Woodsburgh. It was incorporated as a village in 1912. Its population is about 780. North Woodmere Portions of the community are in the Town of Hempstead and the south section of Valley Stream village, and it closely identifies with the Five Towns. Students attend Hewlett-Woodmere, Lawrence and Valley Stream schools. The population is roughly 20,880. Home to the county’s North Woodmere Park, the community includes a large Jewish population and several synagogues such as Temple Hillel, Young Israel of North Woodmere, Congregation Ohr Torah and Beis Hakness of North Woodmere.

For the love of teaching
What sets your school apart? We have a tremendous diversity of backgrounds in our student body, and the students respect each other for their customs, beliefs and differences. Why do you love teaching at Lawrence High School? The majority of our students are really nice kids, and I love encouraging them to think and strive for academic achievement and success.
What is your favorite school tradition and why? I believe that the Life Skills student program in the high school brings out greater sensitivity and acceptance among the rest of the student population. Every year, when the Life Skills group presents their percussion performance in front of the whole school, they are given a rousing standing ovation. That moment makes me proud of every kid in the school.

Celebrating Christmas and Hanukkah in the Five Towns
F
rom late November through December, the Five Towns is aglow with lights. Whether it is the grand menorah in Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park that is lit for the eight days of Hanukkah, Christmas trees in Cedarhurst Park and at Veterans Memorial Plaza in Hewlett or the menorah at the same plaza, Five Towners are celebrating Christmas and Hanukkah. The Chabad of the Five Towns hosts a menorah lighting and celebration in Cedarhurst Park. With the help of a crane, a different honoree lights the 25-foot menorah each night of the Jewish holiday. Singing, dancing, hot latkes and gifts for children follow. This year, the grand menorah lighting and celebration is set to get under way Sunday, Dec. 2, and continue through Sunday, Dec. 9. On Friday, Dec. 7, the lighting takes place at 3 p.m., because of Shabbos. For all other nights, the festivities begin at 6 p.m. Usually held in early December, no date is yet to be set for this year; the Village of Cedarhurst hosts a Christmas caroling event in the park that includes singing holiday songs, a bonfire, chestnuts roasting on an open fire, hot chocolate and cookies, a visit from Santa Claus and a countdown to lighting the tree.
In Hewlett, the Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association hosts two separate events. A menorah lighting in conjunction with the Chabad of Hewlett and a Christmas tree lighting, both at the plaza, known to many as the Triangle, at the intersection of Broadway and West Broadway. Both events include hot chocolate and holiday-related snacks. Santa attends the tree lighting. The Chabad of Hewlett also hosts its annual Hanukkah on Ice party in Grant Park off Broadway on Sheridan Avenue in Hewlett. It includes ice skating, Hanukkah music, dreidel games and decorated donuts. Hot latkes are served, and a giant block of ice was carved into the shape of a menorah. 1- The Moskowitz Family including Yaakov, Yoni, Sari, Gabi, Michali and Batya, at last year’s Chabad of the Five Towns grand menorah lighting. In many ways, putting out a newspaper each week is an interactive process. We need your participation to do our job, so we offer you — our readers and partners — a reminder of how and when to reach us. To tell us what’s going on in your community, or news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is 10 a.m. the Friday prior to publication. Notices are printed free of charge, but must be typed and double-spaced. We also welcome the news of your family life, your business life and your social life. We accept, at no charge, obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions. We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. Letters are accepted until 5 p.m. the Friday prior to publication. The Herald also offers tours of its Garden City headquarters and printing plant for schools, scouts and other community groups. To schedule a tour, contact Michael Romero at (516) 569-4000 ext. 235 or email mromero@liherald.com.

Rock Hall Country Fair
ow in its 33rd year, the Rock Hall Country Fair usually takes place the third weekend in October — this year Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20 and Oct. 21, at Rock Hall Museum from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It not only captures several historical aspects of early America, but also the fall spirit, including Halloween. This year the fair will include historians dressed in colonialera clothing, The Indian River Olde Time Lumberjack Show with log rolling, a children’s pumpkin patch, make-your-own scarecrow and craft areas, craft and food vendors and an animal farm with pony rides. Admission and parking are free. The museum, at 199 Broadway in Lawrence, is owned and operated by the Town of Hempstead. It was the pre-Revolutionary War plantation of Josiah Martin, who came from the West Indies. The Georgian-style home was built in 1767. The Martin family lived there until the 1800s. Then a portion of the Hewlett family owned what was once a 600-acre farm. In 1948, the Hewlett family deeded Rock Hall to the town. After an extensive restoration, the town opened it as a museum five years later. It is now a 3-acre parcel. Rock Hall Museum offers guided tours that provide a view
2
into early American living, programs, lectures and activities with a historical perspective, including the cellar where the warming kitchen, cold storage room and wine cellar offer a rarely seen glimpse into a working 18th century plantation. For those with a modern view, there is a gift shop. Proceeds from the fair will benefit the Friends of Rock Hall. The Friends group is an independent charitable nonprofit organization that works in concert with the museum to sponsor specific programs. They also raise money to buy furnishings and sponsor historic research. An ongoing fundraising venture is for the construction of what is being called an educational visitor center, which is planned to be built in the style of an 18th century barn. Initial plans call for the nearly 1,400-square-foot barn to seat at least 100 people, have a small kitchen area and feature drop-down doors and a loft. Museum presentations could be held, and it will have handicapped access. To help, go to www.friendsofrockhall.org. 1- Steven, Mari and Sophia Bojorje were truly into the Halloween spirit at last year’s Rock Hall Country Fair. Town & County Nassau County Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature, which is comprised of members from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. Residents may submit petitions for proposed laws that legislators must consider. Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Democrat Laura Gillen — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
