Glen Cove Big Red seeks a big turnaround this fall
W
By J.D. FREDA inning one game out of 16 over two seasons is no impressive feat, at least in the positive sense, but that factor just may play in the Big Red’s favor come this football season. Glen Cove stomped into 2018 training camp with the identity of the underdog and a rising crop of talent, a usually dangerous combination that has propelled many a team before it. Seeing this potential, Big Red head coach Pete Kopecky, named as the New York Jets Coach of the Week last November, is irritated at seeing preparation time be cut short by the new Nassau County ruling. “I think it is something they have to get straight,” Kopecky said. “We start scrimmaging late… we have to get good fast before the season.” The formula for ‘getting good’ as Kopecky puts it, starts with an offense led by starting junior quarterback Devon Christopher. The 6-foot-1 Christopher bulked up to 205 pounds at the dawn of training camp and is a physical presence under center. That physicality translates into his dualthreat ability as a big, strong-armed athlete with the ability to tuck and run without avoiding contact for a first down. “He’s a big guy but is north-south fast. He’s definitely a scary sight for defenders when he’s on the move,” Kopecky said. “I’ve seen a few times where he’s tucked to run and defenders really look like they don’t want to make contact.” Kopecky says Christopher is working every day to become a better passer and complete quarterback. “He is a good overall quarterback, but he continues to work to want to get better,” Kopecky said. Senior running back and St. Dom transfer Michael Vaughan looks to slot in as the primary running back. A talented basketball player with quick

lateral speed, good feet, and most importantly a strong, sturdy base, Vaughan should play an integral part to this offense’s success. Senior wide receiver Anthony Rant, who will be making his third varsity appearance this season, will look to build an early rapport with Christopher in camp and these early scrimmages. Pete Rodriguez and Jared Jackson will add to this offense and be dangerous pieces for this coaching staff to use at their disposal. The Big Red brought in a new offensive coordinator in a year where former starting quarterback Joseph Grella has graduated. Grella, adept at running the option during his time in high school, has moved on and Glen Cove now looks to line up in a spread offense with possible four-receiver sets as this coaching staff seems to have real excitement and hope for Christopher. With Christopher being mobile and learning to play the new offense, Kopecky and his braintrust of coaches are looking to implement new-wave gameplans and offensive sets to throw off opponents that think they’ve got Glen Cove’s rhythm in years past. “We’ll be running some RPO’s,” Kopecky said. RPO’s are a ‘run-pass option’ type of play popularized by the Philadelphia Eagles this past season where the offensive line blocks for the run but the quarterback reads the defense pre-snap and make a decision whether he will hand it off, throw for

a quick bubble screen pass, or keep it. Defensively, the Big Red is not as fortunate returning a large number of integral players with ample experience at the position. “We’ve basically just got our defensive backs returning this season,” Kopecky said. “Our front seven, I guess you can say, are all going to be relatively new to the position.” Of those aforementioned defensive backs, Mayan Letellier, Pete Rodriguez, Matt Graff and Rant will provide a spark in both pass coverage, blitzing, and stopping the run. In front of them, the defensive line and linebackers will be fighting early in these scrimmages for experience. “Usually we’ll have at least one linebacker every year that is a physical presence…around 200, 210 pounds,” Kopecky said. “This year we don’t have anyone over 160 pounds. We’ll have to play with a bit more finesse.” Glen Cove will open up the season at home on Sept. 8 against Valley Stream South, a team that has employed a Wing-T offensive formation in year’s past. Kopecky says his team’s scheduled scrimmage with a similar style of play in Carle Place will tell Mayan Lettellier a lot about how ready it is for Week 1 of a redemption year. “We want to be that surprise team, that underdog this year, but that means you’ve really, really gotta work for it,” Kopecky said.

Juniors Matt Jones and Patrick Fallon, along with seniors Seamus Fallon and Chad Trainor will look to be the true nucleus of this offense. “The identity of this team is our offensive line,” Neilly said. “They will be the guys that everyone leans on.” Neilly is preaching refusing to be shy to contact and not skipping a beat on the defensive side, and he believes that this defense is coming along more and more daily. The Falcons open up their season at home against rival Seaford, the defending L.I. champs, on Sept. 8, 2018. “You know what you’re getting when it comes to Seaford,” Neilly said. “They’re not going to try and trick you; they’re going to lineup and try to beat you each play over and over. We’ve exchanged regular season wins back and forth over the past couple of years and I think this is going to be a low-scoring rivalry game.” The strengths of Locust Valley will be carried and bolstered by the protection the offensive line is able to give first-year starting quar quarterback Smith and his unit. With a wide array of athletic, but not overly-physical talent, the Falcons may be looking at a potential high-scoring season, but only if their weapons can make the big plays in space. They look to find that out against their Conference IV competition. Neilly noted the slogan on his team’s shirts will have to ring true this season: “In order to be the man, you’ve got to beat the man,” Neilly said.

North Shore Vikings sail into tough Conference III waters
A
By J.D. FREDA fter a 5-4 finish with an impressive team in Conference IV a year ago, the North Shore Vikings were bumped to Conference III due to enrollment, however, head coach Dan Agovino says his kids have no fear. “These kids are working hard, harder than any team I’ve had,” Agovino said. “Moving up, these kids will not back down. My question marks are on emotion and how the pace of the game will look to be, but they are putting in all the work they need to answer those questions.” Nassau County enforced a new regulation where the allotted time for camp has been shortened before the start of the regular season by at least four practices. “I think that has worked out pretty well,” Agovino said. “There is not a lot of down time, so the whole process has made us more structured.” after rumbling in Conference IV a year ago, this isn’t the Vikings first voyage into a higher division. “We have moved into Conference III before,” Agovino said. “There may have been a knowing challenge moving up in competition before, and I am not saying that those teams had been concerned about that, but this team certainly is not.” “The only thing that this team is concerned of, is going undefeated in Week 1, and the next thing they will be concerned of is going undefeated in Week 2, and so on,” Agovino said. In the alluded-to Week 1 matchup, the Vikings will travel to Plainedge, a team that is 17-9-1 in it’s last three seasons combined playing in tough Conference III play. “We are excited about the
16 —September 6, 2018
challenge,” Agovino said. “These kids cannot wait to get back under the lights and start the season.” Starting the season against a Conference III mainstay like Plainedge on their home field under the lights Sept. 7 certainly means North Shore has it’s work cut out for it, but Agovino doubled down on the notion that this is his hardest-working team, a compliment he can give them after just a summer workout program and a week into camp, by disclosing his nickname for the collective this year. “This is my ‘Hard-Hat Crew’,” Agovino said. “They come in, clock-in, and they get the work done like a blue-collar kind of guy. That kind of work ethic is what you need to beat these teams that we’ll be playing in this conference.” Agovino also introduced the “Hard-Hat Award” for the hardest worker in camp in any given week. This team’s work ethic may be what has its head coach lauding, but there is no shortage of talent to be found either. Returning quarterback and 6-foot-2 senior Dan Livoti reclaims the starting quarterback position after a tremendous year under center in 2017. An extremely efficient passer, Livoti threw for almost 800 yards with nine touchdowns. He also ran for 577 yards on less than 80 attempts, averaging almost 7.5

yards per carry, whilst adding three rushing touchdowns. His knack for limiting turnovers is a key aspect of keeping opposition at bay, and his dual-threat ability keeps defenses guessing. His No. 1 target and threeyear starter Luca Marra returns as the primary wideout coming off of a multiple receiving-TD year. In the backfield, junior Will Scarola will handle the bulk of the carries after more than 300 yards and 3 scores on the ground whilst splitting time in the backfield a year ago. David Parrett will look to see some time in the backfield, especially on passing downs, and line up as a slot receiver on many three-receiver sets. Cristiano Milo, a returning starting center, is looked upon to take more of a leadership role this year. “He really will be looked to as a mentor to the younger lineman this year, to make sure they know their protections, and keep them ready,” Agovino said. He will also slide in to the nose tackle spot on defense. Agovino also credited Andrew Franco, 6-foot-1, 205 pound offensive linemen/middle linebacker with the ability to be a workhorse. “A true workhorse, animal, he will be important for us,” Agovino said. “We want 8 or 9 hats to the ball defensively every time. We want to be playing together, not just making solo plays, and we’re working right now to do just that; to gel as a unit,” he said. After kicking off the campaign at Plainedge, the Vikings, seeded No. 9 in Conference III, play their home opener in Week 2 against Floral Park.

lack of numbers affects both the players and coaches. “These guys all want more players,” Knoll said. “They don’t want to get tired and worn down to know that there is no one behind them. They are being as tough as they can, for as long as they can.” Oyster Bay saw two wins last season, and both came to a lowly Friends Academy team whom has seen two wins in three seasons. The Baymen open Sept. 8 against that very same foe, whom they will see twice this season again. Despite the lack of numbers, Knoll expects his kids to compete. “I can tell you this, the young men will play hard and they will play fast,” Knoll said. “That’s all we, as coaches, can ask for in these circumstances.” The Baymen will be a hardworking bunch with a smattering of solid talent this fall, but will be plagued by increasingly small numbers. Without an excess of bodies, Knoll will work with a smaller playbook and have a smaller window of time to prepare both sides of the ball. However, this small team feel does lend itself to a unity and brotherhood that bands together in the face of adversity. “I think this is a really good group of guys that will work hard, and work at being successful,” Knoll said. Oyster Bay’s home opener is Week 2 against Jericho.
