living in Elmont Elmont was first settled in the mid-1600s by Dutch settlers. The community remained primarily a loose collection of farms until the late 19th century. In 1898, the community’s borders were finally settled on. The Belmont Racetrack, a centerpiece of the hamlet, was completed in 1905, and ever since it has attracted visitors from near and far. Its most prestigious race is the Belmont Stakes, an internationally acclaimed horseracing competition. Like so many Long Island communities, Elmont underwent a housing boom in the post-World War II era.

The Elmont School District includes six elementary schools: Dutch Broadway, Clara H. Carlson, Gotham Avenue, Covert Avenue, Alden Terrace and Stewart Manor. Nearly 2,000 students attend Elmont Memorial High School, part of the Sewanhaka Central High School District.

Elmont also has a volunteer fire department and is served by

the Nassau County Police Department’s 5th Precinct. Paul Sapienza leads the Elmont Chamber of Commerce. There are a number of civic associations, such as the Parkhurst Civic Association, that are dedicated to helping residents express their views.

Elmont has about 33,200 residents living in about 10,300 housing units.

One of the most prominent features of the community is the Elmont Memorial Library. A beautiful building and venue for a variety of events and entertainment series, the library boasts an auditorium and large space for meetings. Thousands visit the library every month for a truly interactive media experience.

Notable natives of Elmont are WNBA President Donna Orender, author Nelson DeMille, comedian Andy Kaufman (buried at Beth David Cemetery) and trainer Cara Castronuova, who has appeared on “The Biggest Loser” television show.

Participants walked in the 71st annual Gottscheer Volkfest parade in full German garb in June 2017. A festival highlight is the annual “Miss Gottschee” competition, and winners, past and present, march in the parade each year.

What is now Franklin Square was originally used as grazing land and farmland by settlers near the center of the Hempstead Plains.

By the 1950s, farmland was rapidly being replaced by homes.

Franklin Square was a major beneficiary of the migration of people from New York City.

The Franklin Square School District is comprised of the Polk Street, John Street and Washington Street elementary schools.

The nearby Willow Road Elementary School is in Valley Stream District 13. The high schools in the area are Valley Stream North and H. Frank Carey.

Franklin Square has a volunteer fire department and is served by the Nassau County Police Department’s 5th Precinct. Its most notable park is Rath Park, which includes a pool, basketball, handball, tennis, football and baseball fields and a playground.

Local organizations include the Franklin Square Chamber of Commerce, currently led by

President Bruno M. Caracciolo; a historical society; youth football and soccer programs; and Franklin Square Little League.

One of Franklin Square’s oldest and most notable restaurants is Plattdeutsche, which hosts many community events.

Franklin Square has about 29,320 residents living in about 9,600 housing units, according to the 2010 census.

Notable natives of Franklin Square include the artist and author Barbara Rosenthal, who wrote for the Franklin Square Bulletin in 1959 at age 11; novelist Alice Hoffman; radio personality Rich Davis; country singer Lisa Matassa; “Jersey Shore” reality television show star Jenni “JWoww” Farley; music journalist and award-winning author Jeff Tamarkin; radio and television host Sean Hannity; NASA astronaut Michael Massimino; professional football player Vinny Testaverde and Major League Baseball player Al Weis.

The libraries in Franklin Square and Elmont

serve a vital function for the community. As a meeting place for clubs and organizations, the libraries also serve as havens for students who need to escape everyday destractions.

Both libraries provide a free family movie viewing every week, live entertainment, lectur-

ers, special exhibits, expert guests and activites geared toward children and young adults to encourage them to read more, whther it’s a craft, game or seasonal celebration.

They emphasize that achieving literacy is the key to a healthy and productive lifestyle, and there are many ways to experience it.

The fiercest rivalries occur when the two teams play football and basketball. H. Frank Carey High School in Franklin Square, named after the former Sewanhaka High School District Board of Education president and Elmont Memorial High School, have been designated

by New York State as Schools of Excellence.

Government

nassau CounTy Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature, which comprises members from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. Residents may submit petitions for proposed laws that legislators must consider. Legislators serve two-year terms.

The county executive — currently Republican Edward Mangano — serves a four-year term and is the chief administrator. Nassau also has an elected comptroller, currently George Maragos; district attorney, Madeline Singas; and a county clerk, Maureen O'Connell.

Town of hempsTead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads.

Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Anthony Santino — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts.

The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office.

The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body.

The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget.

Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. towN of Hempstead
