ounded in 1668, Glen Cove was tied to the Town of Oyster Bay for the first 250 years of its existence. Four of the five original plantation proprietors of Mosquito Cove, which Glen Cove was known as in the 17th century, lived in Oyster Bay, which had been settled 15 years before. A rural hamlet, Musketa Cove was under the oversight of the five proprietors. When the original settlers died, the local government fell under the jurisdiction of the town.

One hundred and fifty years passed before the federal government recognized the hamlet in 1818. With the establishment of its own post office, the official name of the community became Musquito Cove.

In order to dispel the notion that the community was a haven for mosquitoes, an alternative name — Glen Cove — was chosen in 1834.

The community grew dramatically during the latter half of the 19th century, but it never incorporated. By the early 20th century, Glen Cove’s population approached 10,000, making it the largest community in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Although it was a thriving community, Glen Cove was still administered by the town, while the neighboring Village of Sea Cliff incorporated in 1883. Many residents thought Glen Cove was not receiving the services commensurate with the tax dollars sent to the town.

Some in the community thought that Glen Cove should become an incorporated village and form its own government, while others favored incorporating as a city.

became a city had become a voice for the pro-city faction, printing editorials advancing this position. This prompted the Village Improvement Association to meet on April 21, 1916. The “Committee of Seven,” comprised of respected members of the community, was selected. They were tasked with studying the question of incorporating Glen Cove as a city.

But World War I was then raging in Europe, and the debate as to whether America should enter the war overshadowed the issue of Glen Cove’s future form of government.

The issue was reintroduced in January 1917, when the Village Improvement Association met again. It favored a city form of government. A new committee of 25 members, including all of the “Committee of Seven” members, was chosen to draft a charter.

When word got out that Glen Cove was pursuing “citification,” a request was made by some Sea Cliff residents that its village be included in the future City of Glen Cove, but the request was rejected. It was decided that the boundaries should coincide with those of School District No. 5 of the Town of Oyster Bay. Today, the city and the school district are unified within these boundaries Voters overwhelmingly supported creating a city on March 2, 1917. Then New York Gov. Charles S. Whitman signed a bill ensuring that Glen Cove become a city on June 8. In celebration, a cannon was fired at 30-second intervals that evening. Then a larger, formal celebration was held on June 13, 1917, with music, parades and fireworks.

The city encompasses 6.6 square miles of land on the North Shore and roughly 12.6 square miles of water. And as of 2017, roughly 27,400 people call Glen Cove home, where they benefit from a city that has become a hub of entertainment, food, nature and recreation.

While every facet of Glen Cove’s culture makes it one of Long Island’s most noteworthy destinations, it is perhaps best known for its mansions, some of which date back over a century.

It’s time for rides, games and yummy food at St. Rocco’s Feast from July 31-Aug. 4.

Glen Cove Mansion Built in Dosoris Park by John Teele Pratt Sr. between 1909 and 1915, this sprawling eponymous property hosts dozens upon dozens of events throughout the year. From festivals to fundraisers to private parties, the Glen Cove Mansion, once called the Manor House, has become one of the city’s most popular destinations.

Webb Institute Just past the Welwyn Preserve sits the Webb Institute, or as it was called upon its creation in 1912, the Braes Mansion. Built by Herbert L. Pratt, the mansion has housed the Webb Institute’s private undergraduate engineering college program since 1947.

Killenworth The history of the Killenworth mansion starts much like the rest of Glen Cove’s mansions, as it was built in 1913 by George DuPont Pratt. However, it separated itself from the pack in 1951 when it was purchased by the Soviet Union to serve as the country’s retreat to the United Nations. Since then, there has been no shortage of controversy surrounding the massive estate.

Glen Cove’s annual Howl’oween Pet Parade is not to be missed on Oct. 27.

Glengariff Built by Frederic B. Pratt between 1917 and 1924 as the Poplar Hill mansion, this estate on Dosoris Lane now houses the Glengariff Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. The magnificent early-20th century architecture makes for a more personal, homey healthcare atmosphere.

While each of these mansions and others around the city serve different purposes, they all help to shed light on the lush past of Glen Cove and what makes it one of the most historically and culturally significant places on Long Island.

he Glen Cove City School District, established in 1830, has long been a magnet for community spirit and activism. The district consists of six school buildings: four elementary schools, one pre-K-2, one K-2, two 3-5, a middle school housing grades 6-8 and a high school for grades 9-12. The educational program of the Glen Cove City School District is rich in opportunities for everyone to succeed, both students and staff alike. The educational program educates the whole child, focusing on students’ intellectual, physical, emotional and moral well-being as they develop and progress. Students are encouraged to use their strengths and creativity to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and the varied academic, athletic and co-curricular programs encourage students to develop these talents and abilities.

Some of the district’s 2018-19 highlights for achievement include having 48 students designated as Advanced Placement Scholars and the class of 2019 submitting more than 1,341 applications to 271 academic institutions nationwide. Glen Cove City School District offers a 1-to-1 initiative for students in grades eight through 10, as well as Chromebook-equipped classrooms for grades si through 10 to enhance the learning experience. Elementary students cheer graduating seniors

T

he Glen Cove School District hosted Senior Walk for the first time in 2018,and it was a hit.

Graduating seniors, decked out in caps and gowns, paraded through the halls of the district’s elementary schools, much to the delight of the younger students, who stood against the walls and cheered them on.

At Landing Elementary, students’ hands flew up, seeking high-fives when members of the class of 2018 marched by. The seniors’ robes billowed as they stretched out their hands to oblige the youngsters.

For the seniors, “It’s just a great culminating event,” said Landing Elementary School Principal Benjamin Roberts.

For his students, he added, “They get to see the journey they’re about to take, and then on to the next levels.”

The Senior Walk, Superintendent Dr. Maria Rianna said, was a way for older students to help motivate the youngsters.

“They wanted to show the kids it’s important to be graduating,” she said. “It’s an important and happy event to be entering the next phase of their lives.”

W

hen people think of the library, books come to mind. However, the Glen Cove Library is not just a building with a wide collection of books. There’s more happening beyond the aisles of books.

For starters, any Glen Covian can register for a number of different programs and engage in volunteer opportunities. There are also free opportunities to visit museums in Manhattan and on Long Island by using the passes available to library members. And on Aug. 13, the library is sponsoring a family bus trip to the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan, which will include access to special exhibitions like the “T. rex: The Ultimate Predator,” the giant screen film, “Dive into the World of Unseen Oceans” and the Space Show.

The library also serves as a central meeting location for a number of local clubs and organizations. And it offers English as a Second Language, classes for adults and even Chinese Mandarin classes. It’s no surprise that a child’s visit to Glen Cove Library may include an encounter with interactive weekly storytelling.

This summer the library is gearing up for the 2019 Adult Summer Reading Program with the theme, “A Universe of Stories.” The event will kick off July 8 at 7 p.m.

There’s often an exhibit, a lecture or a Sunday afternoon music concert. But best of all, the library is an ideal place — that is quiet — to study or meet up with friends and neighbors.

St. Rocco’s Feast

F

or 43 years, Glen Cove has been the home of the Feast of St. Rocco’s, a celebration of Italian-American heritage. The five-day event, which locals describe as “the biggest annual event in Glen Cove, for sure,” features games, rides and tasty Italian cuisine, prepared by more than 100 volunteers, under the guidance of seasoned of Italian grandmothers.

Given the unmistakable Italian-ness of the event, some might be surprised to learn that the feast’s namesake was actually French. St. Rocco was born in the mid-1300s, a time where the black plague was running wild across Europe. After his parents died when he was a teenager, he took a vow of poverty and set off across the Italian countryside, tending to plague victims — and, according to legend, curing them — until he, himself became infected. He was canonized as the patron saint of infectious diseases.

Every year during Glen Cove’s feast sweet and savory smells waft through the summer wind, drawing hungry feast-goers to snack on fresh shellfish, piping hot empanadas, saucy plates of Italian fare, and flash fried sweets glistening with a powered sugar-snow. The neon lights of carnival rides blink wildly as they swoop and soar through the air, sending screams from passengers out over the crowds. And residents from far and wide rub elbows at standing tables while enjoying sausage and pepper sandwiches and cold beer.

St. Rocco’s Feast is about community and tradition. And although the event is rooted in the church, its appeal is universal.

ach summer Pryibil Beach is the place to be when the annual Mayor’s Snapper Derby is held in August. Crowds of children can be found slinging rods and lines over the edge of the pier as they try to cinch the title of best angler. Foodie’s paradise

oodies from across the North Shore visit the Glen Cove Mansion for the Chamber of Commerce’s annual Culinary Delights event each year. The chamber has brought the best local restaurants, gourmet eateries, bakeries and spirits purveyors under one roof for over 20 years to give residents a chance to feast on the best bites the community has to offer.

“For many people this is coming home,” said chamber member Maxine Mayreis.

Walking through the gilded halls of the mansion during Culinary Events is like being a kid in a candy store: It’s hard to know which sweet to sample first. The air is scented with flavors from all around the world, tempting the taste buds even before taking the first sample.

The offerings vary and are numerous. In years past, guests were treated to authentic El Salvadoran papusas, flavorful gazpacho, gourmet hors d’oeuvres, house-flavored tequila and sinfully good sweets from restaurants throughout the region.

“The tasting event originated with the chamber 21 years ago,” said Mayreis, who has chaired Culinary Delights for over a decade. “The event was created with the purpose of allowing our great restaurants to showcase their wares, so that everybody could come and taste and sample and fall in love

with them, and then patronize those establishments.”

There is a certain philosophy for the event that Mayreis said remains the same: “Eat until you explode, drink until you’re blind and go home happy,” she said.

Glen Cove’s Downtown Sounds

A

variety of musical offerings can be heard in Glen Cove each summer when musicians take to an outdoor stage to share their talents at Downtown Sounds. The series of free concerts, which is run by the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District, is so popular that hundreds of people attend from as far away as Manhattan. But it isn’t only the concertgoers that benefit. It’s great for the city as a whole, allowing for the small businesses to experience a sizable uptick in customers and the city to receive valuable sales tax dollars.

Downtown Sounds, originally called Jazz in the Square, was an initiative by former Mayor Ralph Suozzi that began in 1997, that offered four concerts in July. It was popular, so much so that in 2010 the city decided to increase the series to nine concerts that would extend into August. By then it had been renamed, Downtown Sounds.

The city entered into a partnership in 2010 with the BID, offering to contribute $25,000 to assist in the total cost for the concerts, which is $75,000. The BID has continued to contribute its $25,000, and the remaining funds are acquired each year from private sponsorships.

Garvies Point Project continues to move forward

o cated directly next to downtown Glen Cove, Garvies Point is a 56-acre area of the city’s waterfront that is nearing the conclusion of nearly 20 years’ worth of housing planning.

RXR Realty broke ground at Garvies Point in March of 2018, beginning the process of creating roughly 1,100 residential condominium units on the property. Several acres of public amenities will also be available to non-Garvies residents, including boardwalks, parks, restaurants, playgrounds and marinas. And the Glen Cove ferry terminal, expected to be up and running by May 2020, will also be operated out of Garvies Point.

The construction at Garvies Point reached a major milestone in February 2019, as RXR celebrated the topping

off of the Beacon. Symbolically, a building is “topped off” as a representation of the completion of its vertical construction.

Once it is topped off, the building will not be built any taller, and construction will then focus on the interior.

A ceremony was held outside of the Beacon, as RXR executives and Glen Cove city officials congratulated the 100plus construction workers on their significant achievement. Joe Graziose, senior vice-president of residential development for RXR, said residents should be able to move into the Beacon by the end of 2019, and the remainder of the buildings should not be far behind.

The condominiums in all of RXR’s buildings are expected to range anywhere from $700,000 to $3 million. According to economic impact projections compiled by the Glen Cove CDA and IDA, the developments could add about $24 million to the city’s economy.

esidents of all ages head to the Glen Cove Police Department in August each year for its annual National Night Out. Police officers, first responders and community leaders across the country use this night to increase crime and drug prevention awareness, as well as show support for local anti-crime efforts.

At National Night Out, police officers speak with parents and their children about policing efforts and demonstrate how they use their equipment. In Glen Cove, some officers even pose for photos. In the spirit of encouraging interaction with residents, the Glen Cove Police also include games and festive music at the event.

“Looking out to the crowd, I just can’t believe how much this event grows each and every

year,” said William Whitton, the city’s police chief. “I think that this is the police department’s highest hour of the year. It gives the community a really good chance to come in, see the police department, meet the officers, and interact in a special way.”

U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi, who lives in Glen Cove, tries to attend the event each year. “The people of Glen Cove love our police,” he said. “You don’t hear problems about our police. They are people who care about our community; they follow the rules, enforce the law, and make this community a better place to live in. Every single one of them makes our community better every single day.”

FIRE Department Glen Cove:

A nearly two-century tradition of firefighting

T

he Glen Cove Fire Department was born 80 years before the city was incorporated in 1917. It has evolved from a single company of horse-drawn “engines” to the fully developed emergency response unit, providing a window into Glen Cove’s storied past.

At the urging of the Glen Cove Mutual Insurance Company, 30 volunteers gathered to form the Glen Cove Fire Company in 1837. The group raised enough money to buy an engine, a hand-pumped rig that the company affectionately called “Iron Sides.” In 1854, the company erected its first firehouse, where Pulaski Street is now.

As is the case with today’s Fire Department, the volunteer members back then took their mission, and the professional execution of it, seriously.

In the early 1900s, Glen Cove became more developed and populated, and took on greater fire risks as it transitioned from a rural hamlet to an industrial hub. In 1902, the Glen Cove Fire Department — distinct from the Glen Cove Fire Company, which had been renamed the Pacific Company — was formed. Its two companies, Chemical Company and the Hook and Ladder, took up residence in a building on School Street near Glen Street, and acquired its first motorized engine. Pacific Company joined the department a year later.

The city began to grow more quickly, and so did the department.

By 1924, it had to move out of its old firehouse and build a new one on West Glen Street. In 1929, the Ladies Auxiliary was formed. Women responded to fires alongside the men, and assisted them in any ways they could.

The department celebrated its 175th anniversary, in 2012, for which a book detailing the department’s rich history was compiled by members, with the help of the Glen Cove Library.

have served as president of the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce for a little over a year. Together the board and I volunteer our time “to enhance the health and profitability of our member businesses,” which is included in our statement). Due to the board's efforts, and especially our new marketing and information technology specialist Shannon, we have now grown to over 180 members.

Since 1920, the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce has supported the business community. Local businesses are important to the value of our community. And even though Glen Cove is a city, Lisa Cohn it is small enough for everyone to become familiar with all of the businesses. Membership in the chamber especially helps those businesses without a storefront. Our monthly meetings and events provide opportunities to network with other local business owners as well as interact with our local elected leaders.

We have all seen the decline of the small business, because of the many big box stores and the internet. But what may not be known is that small business is on the rise because many consumers prefer personalized customer service. We are extremely

excited about all of the city’s construction projects, especially the development of the waterfront. Yes, Glen Cove will become more crowded, but it will also finally become a destination to shop, socialize, dine out and enjoy our waterfront. With all this activity, what better place to run a small business or even a large one for that matter.

There is definitely more power in numbers, as we work together towards a thriving business community in Glen Cove and the surrounding communities. We here at the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce are excited to be part of the rebirth of Glen Cove.
