Ways We Transition Children from Pre-kindergarten to Kindergarten The school district’s administrators, teachers, and support personnel help parents and students prepare for this important period of change. Building relationships, partnering and collaborating are extremely important to facilitate the transition of prekindergarten students to kindergarten. This is a time of great change for children, parents, families, and teachers in which new relationships, new expectations, and new competencies must be developed. The district has a comprehensive plan for supporting its rising kindergarten students and their families as they transition into its K-8 system. Some of the transition events that ensure this include: • Kindergarten Teachers’ Visits to Pre-K Classes (April before students begin Kindergarten) • Pre-K Students’ Visit to Kindergarten Classrooms (May before students begin Kindergarten) • Kindergarten Parent Orientation for Pre-K Parents (June before students begin Kindergarten) • Pre-K and Kindergarten Joint Teacher Meeting to Create Kindergarten Classes (June before students begin Kindergarten) • Stepping Up Ceremony for Pre-K Students

• All children enter Kindergarten with

English language and math literacy skills. Children have completed the first half of the Fundations Wilson Reading Systems program at the time they enter Kindergarten. • Kindergarten is a full-day program (8:50 AM – 3:20 PM) We • have a dedicated school bus for all (and only) kindergartners • Our Spanish World Language program is 2 days (30 mins x 2) in every 4-day cycle with dually certified LOTE teacher (Spanish)/

FLES teacher • Physical Education consists of 120 mins each calendar week with certified Phys Ed teachers • Health Education that include social-emotional, personal safety, and nutrition focused units of study are conducted with certified Health teacher and classroom teacher • Special Enrichment classes occur 1 day in every 4-day cycle • Science Inquiry Based OHM program • Lego Robotics Engineering and Coding program with certified teacher of respective subject areas • Library with certified teacher of respective subject areas • Art with certified teacher of respective subject areas • Music with certified teacher of respective subject areas • In addition, students receive special education services in an Integrated Co-taught class. • Related services are provided on an asneeded basis. These include resource room, occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, and English language instruction for those whom English is a New Language. • Class field trips include: Public Library, White Post Farm, and Queens Zoo.

Is it time to shut down?

TOO MUCH TIME ON SMARTPHONES AND TABLETS CAN DAMAGE KIDS’ DEVELOPMENT. Sixty-five percent of metro-area kids are spending three hours or more a day on screens for nonacademic purposes and 22 percent are glued to screens for five or more hours, according to a recent South Nassau Truth in Medicine Poll, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Too much screen time — especially in young children — can delay cognitive, language, social and emotional development.
