Sharing the spirit of the season How to be a better gift-giver By DiAnne Crown he best gifts aren’t necessarily the most expensive, surprising or best wrapped, say online gift gurus. Instead, the perfect present is usually practical, thoughtful and on the wish list. Here are five tips from the experts. Simple Gift, Simple Wrapping According to Yale University’s marketing and psychology professor Nathan Novemsky, over-the-top wrapping can promise more than it delivers. Elaborate packaging increases the anticipation of a gift and also increases the chance of the gift-receiver being disappointed if the present doesn’t fulfill expectations. “It’s like giving someone a Sears gift card in a Tiffany box,” says Novemsky. Practical and Uncomplicated People tend to overthink gifts, says Brian Handwerk in his Smithsonian. com article “How to Give the Best Gifts, According to Science.” This leads to disappointment on both ends as gift-givers expect a greater response and receivers don’t consider the gift useful. “For instance, givers may choose a complicated computer program with lots of features because they think it will be seen as more valuable,” says Handwerk. “But receivers may prefer an easy-to-use program with fewer features.” Instead, think about the convenience of the gift on a personal level. Would it be easy for you to use? Would you want this gift? By answering these questions yourself, you can gain insight on how the recipient might feel. All About the Receiver Consumer psychologist Kit Yarrow discusses the

6 — November 30, 2017

unfortunate “all about me” gift in a Time article, “Worst. Gift. Ever. The 6 Kinds of Presents You Should Never Give,” such as expensive diamond earrings you can’t afford or a donation to the gift-giver’s favorite charity. “If it was to one of MY favorite charities that would be different,” emphasizes Glenn, a 50-something manager Yallow interviewed. “Sometimes I think it’s not even about the charity, they think they’ll look altruistic. Either way, it’s not really a gift if you ask me.” Other nice-try gifts include the obvious regift, statement gifts that “typically offer disapproval or some kind of judgmental commentary aimed at the recipient,” and non-gifts. A non-gift is “something you would have purchased anyway,” says Yarrow. “Socks, frying pans, and hair brushes have all achieved the ‘worst gift’ designation by the people I’ve spoken with.” Following the List “I used to think my husband’s family was super weird for giving one another gift lists during the holidays and on birthdays,” says health and psychology writer Sunny Sea Gold. “Where’s the surprise? The effort? The proof that you know the person so well that you can divine exactly what he or she wants without asking?” However, as people get old, they lose the desire for useless, though thoughtful, junk that they didn’t want. According to research from Harvard and Stanford business schools, recipients are happier when they receive exactly what they asked for.

Keep your gift-wrapping simple to not raise expectations unnecessarily.

many people regarding holiday gifts. One woman, Margaret, is 81 years old and has been given many presents in her life. Yet her favorite was a flower box that her son David put in the balcony outside her room in her assisted living facility. Says Margaret, “David came up with the idea on his own and surprised me with it. I hadn’t realized how much I missed my garden until he installed it, the whole thing made me so happy.” This gift embraced all three essential elements of the perfect gift — generosity of time and effort, insight into the heart of the receiver and the emotional impact that comes from presenting a genuine and welcome surprise.

The Gift Trifecta According to Yarrow, there’s a magical trifecta to giving the perfect gift: generosity, insight and emotional impact. During Yarrow’s research in consumer psychology, she spoke with HOLIDAY MAGIC

Art for everyone Gifts to offer anyone on your list a creative outlet or anyone on your holiday list who’s got you stumped, there’s got to be something more exciting than the standard coffee-shop gift card, right? The holidays are notorious for causing lots of anxiety: overcrowded parking lots, burnt main courses, flight cancellations, etc. Give the gift of inspiration with presents that are activity-based, centered on relieving stress through making art. These creative gifts range in prices, so you won’t have to worry about reaching too far into your pockets. And if you want to give the gift of quality time to the special people in your life, there are also artistic endeavors that can be shared. Adult Coloring Books Do you remember how much time you spent coloring during your childhood? If an adult handed you some crayons or colored pencils, you were good to go for hours and hours! Studies show that coloring releases similar signals to your body that flow during meditation or exercise. It requires extreme focus but still taps into your creative side, making it a fun, engaging activity; instead of turning on the television to tune out, you’re turning on different parts of your brain by tuning in to your inner artist. The following are some fun options. “Adult Coloring Book: Stress Relieving Patterns.” This is a New York Times best-selling series, offering different paperbacks and patterns to choose from. About $9. “Adult Coloring Book Designs: Stress Relief Coloring Book: Garden Designs, Mandalas, Animals, and Paisley Patterns” offers lots of variety and fun. About $5. “Tattoo Coloring

Book” by Oliver Munden. For the edgier folks in your life, this is a great idea. It might even spark inspiration for new ink! About $11. “Swear Word Coloring Book.” If you’re shopping for a smart-alec who might ordinarily roll her eyes at arts and crafts, this is a perfect book. It will motivate her to sit and color by tickling her funny bone. About $6. Painting, Origami and More While adult coloring books are all the rage right now, here are a few other options: “DIY Oil Painting Paint by Number Kit” by Colour Talk. This is ideal for someone who’s already somewhat artistically inclined and would like the challenge. About $12. “Color Your Own Origami Kit” from Tuttle Publishing. The act of carefully folding paper can be meditative and deeply relaxing. About $13. 3-D Printing Pen from TRLife. This new technology is just plain fun. It makes for a great conversation starter. About $47.95. If you’d like to give a gift that’s both social and creative, consider a gift card to your neighborhood pottery/art studio. This is also a good option for getting a group together for an out-of-the-box evening that you’ll remember forever, especially because you get to take home a unique memento. Have fun looking, and keep an HOLIDAY MAGIC

Get ‘em while you can Hot toys to buy for the holidays By Diane Schlindwein hildren learn about themselves and the world by playing. They learn critical thinking skills, how to get along with others, self-esteem and motor skills, not to mention how to let their imagination and creativity run wild. As parents, the ideal toy is not one that will allow a child to check out but one that will challenge and benefit the child in a healthy way. Toy experts predict that the hot toys this year are an eclectic mix of modern, techie items and simple, classic items. These examples are as mentally stimulating and educational as they are enjoyable. May The Force be with you Children of all ages — and parents — continue to 10 — November 30, 2017

enjoy traveling to “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” The release of new movies in the Walt Disney “Star Wars” franchise has fueled a huge demand for “Star Wars” toys in the last two years. In fact, Fortune magazine online reports that the franchise raised the sales of the toy industry by 5 percent in 2016. The Spinmaster Star Wars Hero Droid BB-8, as inspired by the adorable “The Force Awakens” droid character, appears on many toy hot lists this year. For about $300, those ages 6 and up can enjoy full control of the 16-inch-tall droid. It has voice recognition and authentic lights and sounds, takes voice commands and has a unique “Follow Me” mode, where it will roll right alongside you, just as in the movie. Children love to bring their favorite characters to life, and this interactive gift will do just that. Monkey fun Fingerlings Baby Monkeys from HOLIDAY MAGIC

WowWee, another interactive product, are predicted to be a big seller this season. Christopher Byrne is the content director of Toys, Tots, Pets & More, a toy consumer research site whose editorial team reviews thousands of toys each year and writes comprehensive reviews. He believes that with Fingerlings, WowWee has “managed to incorporate electronics and play into something that we think kids are really going to respond to.” The six characters latch on to a finger and respond to touch and motion by moving their head, blinking their big monkey eyes and talking in a sweet voice. Kids ages 5 and up will have friendship right on their fingers. Each Fingerling sells for $14.99. American Girl dolls are always in favor Certain toys like dolls and action figures can help teach children positive values and learn about other cultures. Stephanie Spanos, a spokeswoman for American Girl says, “Her efforts to help and heal her friends and neighbors during wartime are all driven by her spirit of aloha.” Children can get a taste of Hawaiian culture, American history and compassion by playing with Nanea. What’s more, American Girl is taking donations for the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces program online and in retail stores through Dec. 31. Some might prefer to go the American Girl Create Your Own route, which allows them to customize a Truly Me doll online. “Custom choices include face molds, skin tones and freckles, eye and hair colors, hair textures, new cuts and styles, along with special extras like earrings, hearing aids, glasses and sunglasses, and braces,” Spanos says. a doll in their likeness that celebrates their uniqueness or get creative with another design. Back to basics Byrne believes that children are discovering the fun in simple and silly games. In this age of gadgets and electronics, going back to basics can be refreshing. “Today’s 11-year-olds have never lived in a world without a smartphone,” he says, “so it’s not a novelty to them. Yes, of course, they like the phones, but the real novelty is stuff you sit down and play with friends.” The Spinmaster Rube Goldberg Acrobat Challenge offers STEM-based learning by challenging kids to use gravity and spring forces to launch an acrobat out of a cannon. Boys and girls ages 8 and up can build and rebuild a random contraption with pieces like a seesaw ramp, circus ball, flaming hoop and snake to complete

the mission. It’s a fun toy that allows children to collaborate and play with their hands. Any of these toys are perfect for children to enjoy year-round. Give your kids the gift of love and laughter this holiday season.

he holidays are here, but do kids really need another app, game or movie as a gift? Most likely, they need a break from TV and devices instead. According to the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, kids between the ages of 8 and 18 consume an average of seven hours and 11 minutes of screen media each day. Take a break from screen-related presents this season by giving kids gifts that will help them connect with nature. Give kids a gift that keeps giving by teaching them how to grow their own organic herb garden.

The Tropical Terrarium, by Faber-Castell, is a planting dish that comes with easy-to-grow polka dot plant seeds and potting mix. Kids can decorate the terrarium with a flamingo, a pineapple, succulents, stones and sand. It’s modern decor for their room, as well as a hands-on way to connect with nature. Fish Fun Teach kids about science with an aquarium turned herb garden. With the AquaSprouts Garden, kids can learn about the ecosystem that exists between fish and the edible plants on top. In a process known as aquaponics, the plants use fish waste as fertilizer, which also cleans the water. The garden, which doesn’t require water or filter changes, has fresh greens year-round. In the Can This gift can help kids develop an organic herb garden and hone their STEM skills, too. Back to the Roots’ Garden-in-a-Can indoor gardening kit uses biochar, the charred remains of organic agricultural waste, which retains water well, aerates the soil for root growth and increases nutrient retention. The kit is available in sage, dill, cilantro and basil. This type of project teaches kids about growing their own food and could inspire a lifetime of gardening. Reading Roots Get kids inspired about nature with literature focused on the great outdoors. “The Nocturnals,” from Fabled Films Press, is aimed at kids ages 7 through 12 who love animals, adventure and a bit of mystery. The main characters are Tobin, a sweet pangolin, Dawn, a serious fox, and Bismark, a loudmouthed, pint-sized sugar glider. The series of chapter books titled “Wild Tales & Garden Thrills” is all about organic gardening. The books are written for kids ages 7 to 10 and tackle the issues of plant science, healthy eating, sustainable living and environmental awareness. Kids learn garden vocabulary, get organic gardening lessons and can check out recipes, too.

Making a statement Jewelry is always in season n the flurry of gifts for any occasion, it’s really hard to make yours stand out. But you can ensure the gift you give will be the special one the lucky recipient remembers long after the parties are over and the decorations are packed away. Begin by choosing a gift that will make an emotional connection between giver and receiver as well as one that holds material value. The best place to go is your local jewelry store. You’ll find jewelry gift ideas not offered in department or discount stores, and you’ll have the assistance of a jewelry professional who knows the latest styles, the best qualities and the pieces that best suit certain personalities. With that in mind, consider these options for those special people on your list this year.

Men 1. Watches. Quartz, mechanical and

pocket watches are the go-to choice of jewelry for men. But make your gift special by choosing the fine watch he has wanted for years, a watch with his favorite sports team’s logo on the face or a pocket watch with his name engraved on the case. 2. Cuff links or money clip. Wrap up a combination gift by inserting cuff links into a new French cuff shirt, or fold a dollar bill for luck and a gift certificate for his favorite restaurant into a money clip. 3. Dog tags engraved with his initials. On the backside, engrave a secret message for added impact. 4. Winder for mechanical watches. These are not only functional, but also a beautiful conversation starter for him to place in a home office instead of hide in the bedroom. 5. Pen or pen set. In this day 16 — November 30, 2017

of digital communication, remind him what pens are for by including a set of assorted masculine greeting cards.

Women 1. Heart-shaped jewelry or charm

bracelets. A spouse or boyfriend will never go wrong with a heart necklace or other heart-shaped jewelry. Personalize it with her favorite gemstones or engrave her name along with yours on the back. Charm bracelets, such as the PANDORA® line, will give you a chance to select charms unique to her personality. 2. Tell her you’re glad she was born. A ring or pendant with her birthstone or those of both partners will be meaningful to her. 3. Expand her timepiece wardrobe. Choose a rugged watch she can wear while at the gym or gardening, a more refined precious metal watch for work or an elegant diamond watch for evenings out. 4. Sterling silver picture frame. Include a photo that’s meaningful to her. Children may choose a photo of themselves, a sibling might find a childhood photo of the recipient and a spouse can insert a beautiful photo they took on their honeymoon or other special trip. 5. Ring holder. A pewter, crystal or sterling silver ring tree, ring box or ring tray will keep everything organized when she removes her jewelry at the end of the day.

Teens 1. Like mother, like child. Matching

jewelry purchased for mother and child, can help maintain a connection during the trying teen years 2. Jewelry box. A jewelry box for girls and a valet box for boys will help establish that special things should be kept in special places. Include a surprise within a surprise by placing a necklace or a watch inside. 3. Make a statement. One way teens HOLIDAY MAGIC

show their independence is by supporting various causes. Check at your jewelry store to see what might be for sale with part of the proceeds benefitting one of those causes. 4. School spirit. Jewelry that includes sport or collegiate themes is popular among this age group. What are your teen’s favorite sports? Where does he or she hope to attend college? Ask local jewelers what’s available in your town or visit the website of a jeweler where the college is located. 5. Make a connection. Jewelry engraved with their names is a good choice, as is jewelry inherited from grandparents and great-grandparents, perhaps creating a connection that never existed before. But before passing along vintage jewelry, have your jeweler clean it, check the settings to make sure they’re secure, and size it if necessary.

Tween (ages 10-12) 1. Stackable bracelets. Choose

leather or fabric cord bracelets with sterling silver or gold clasps if you’re concerned about how they’ll be handled. 2. Heartfelt. A simple heart ring will have a special appeal. Sterling silver jewelry is a good, inexpensive way to introduce this age group to fine accessories. 3. Simple and cool. A single pearl on a 14K gold chain for her and a neck chain for him amp up the cool factor as they both begin to grow into their own. 4. To the letter. The initial of her first name engraved or outlined in crystals will make a pendant truly special. 5. Charming. Choose a charm bracelet to represent her growing list of interests. minutes, stirring occasionally. Cool to room temperature. Carefully lay one phyllo sheet on cutting board and brush with melted butter. Place another sheet of phyllo on top and brush with melted butter. Cover remaining sheets with damp towel to prevent drying out. Position brushed pastry horizontally and cut into five strips. Place 1/2 teaspoon cranberry filling, one cube of cheese and 1/2 teaspoon chopped nuts in lower corner of each strip. Fold dough over filling to form triangle. Fold triangle up then over, forming another triangle. Continue folding to end of strip. Brush top with melted butter and sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon chopped nuts. Repeat with remaining strips of dough and remaining sheets of phyllo. Bake 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool on wire rack before serving. Rituals and tradition bring families together during the Festival of Lights.

Dreidels and more

Creative ways to celebrate Hanukkah any jokes have been shared about the complexity of growing up Jewish surrounded by Christian friends and the overwhelming influence of Christmas come the month of December. Seemingly everywhere you look buildings, stores and homes are decked out in lights and decorations. But Christmas celebrants are not the only ones with reason to be festive this time of year, when Hanukkah is also cause for celebration. Perhaps due to its proximity to Thanksgiving and Christmas, Hanukkah tends to be the most widely celebrated Jewish holiday in America. Even though it is officially listed as a minor holiday, Hanukkah is important to families. In fact, because the basis of the holiday is rededication to the faith, it very well may be an instrumental celebration for families who may need to find their way back to the roots of their beliefs. While Hanukkah is steeped in tradition, there are many ways you can add a creative spin to your family’s festivities. 24 — November 30, 2017

Light: One of the major tenets of Hanukkah is how light can shine and lead a person through dark periods. This is typically exemplified by the lighting of the menorah, which is prominently placed in windows or other visible areas of celebrants’ homes. This season spend time with someone who may be dealing with an illness or the loss of a loved one. You may be the light that inspires this person each day. Give candles to friends and family members to symbolize the light that will shine in the future. Oil: Another component of Hanukkah celebrations is the focus on how a one-day supply of oil somehow lasted eight days during the rededication of the temple’s menorah. Many ways to include oil in celebrations exist. Some people like to get creative in the kitchen, serving fried foods and desserts. Think about giving gifts of oil, such as fragrant essential oils that can be used in potpourri or in the bath or shower. Working alongside their parents, children can see how a wick drenched in oil can serve as an efficient lighting source and decorate the home with these homemade oil lamps. HOLIDAY MAGIC

Twenty-five: Bring attention to the number 25, which is significant when celebrating Hanukkah. The word Hanukkah can be divided into two: Chanu, meaning “they rested,” and Kah, which is the numerical value of 25. On the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev, the Maccabees rested from their battle with the Greeks and triumphantly marched into the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Make 25 a part of celebrations by inviting 25 people to celebrate with you or ask children to make murals with 25 different adornments. Charitable giving: Gift-giving is now a component of Haunkkah celebrations, but it wasn’t always. Greater importance was once placed on the lighting of candles to publicize the miracle and evangelize the faith. Some poor people could not afford candles, and these people would go door-todoor for candle funds, or “gelt,” to be able to purchase candles and kiddush wine. Some Jewish families prefer to give money rather than gifts to keep with the tradition of Hanukkah gelt. However, families also can incorporate charitable giving in their celebrations as a way to reinforce the customs of giving to the poor. HERALD COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS
