hile spring is breathing new life into the outdoors, it’s also a perfect time to add a little oomph to your indoor environment. Consider these ideas to brighten your homee in celebration of the season.

Change is in the air. Spring is a perfect time to bring the outdoors in. Spring flowers, arranged either in one large bunch or in several mini-bouquets placed in nooks throughout the house are not only a visual treat, but emit refreshing springtime scents. Brighten up. Adding seasonal touches to your home can be as easy as painting a piece of furniture, a single wall or the trim in the sunniest room in your home. The best colors for spring are light, clean, refreshing, and natural as opposed to either pale pastels or deep, color-drenched hues. Consider paint colors inspired by nature, such as shamrock, violet, slate and goldenrod. Lighten up. It’s hard to imagine that spring has sprung in a room decked out in velvet or other heavy fabrics. W arm days and spring breezes call out for sheer or lightweight curtains, slipcovers in natural solid-colored or floral fabrics, and decorative pillows that bring splashes of color into the room. It’ s not necessary to replace all of the fabrics in a room to usher in a new season. Sometimes simply changing out pillows and removing warm winter throws is enough. Floor it. Don’t forget to give your floors a spring facelift as well. Substitute lighter cotton, sisal, jute or seagrass rugs in natural shades for the heavy wool rugs that feel so right when the weather turns cold. (Spring and summer are also perfect times to have wool rugs cleaned and/or repaired.)

Re-view. Shifting the arrangement of the furniture and decorative pieces in a room can have a major impact on its look and feel. During the cold winter months, it may be comforting to be nestled in a chair that faces a fireplace. Creating the perfect porch oasis

f you’re lucky enough to have a front porch – whether it is a small section next to your door or a grand wraparound style – your next decorating project could be a budget-friendly makeover of this space.

Before, your family and friends simply passed through your porch area, now you can all gather there in comfy chairs, sipping thirst-quenching drinks and whiling away the evening in a relaxing style. Bohnne Jones, owner of Decorating Den Interiors, says, “One of today’ s home decorating trends is to ‘bring the outside in and the inside out,’ which makes a front porch cozy and inviting.” From lamps to carpets to curtains, decor items that were once the domain of inside living spaces now find a place in outside design. Before you begin your porch decor process, first take some time to repair any loose railings or floorboards. Y ou want your space to be safe and sturdy before decorating. You might wish to paint your porch wall a fresh, new color that matches or coordinates with your house color and works with your porch space’s theme — Southwestern, coastal, V ictorian and so on. You might choose a neutral sage green, a sunny yellow or another hue that fits your overall plan for the space. With your porch’s raw space ready, here are the top ways to makeover this area: Give furniture a spin. Rather than have sofas and chairs lined up against the back wall facing outward, rearrange them in an L-shape or face-to-face placement that facilitates conversation. Jones says, “Four chairs can be a more flexible selection than a sofa,” because chairs can be moved around more easily and you can create two separate sitting areas. Lay a carpet. In other cases, the entire fence may be constructed out of lattice sandwiched in between fence posts. When building a wooden privacy fence, it is important to use material that will not rot or decay over time, such as treated lumber or wood types that are naturally rot-resistant. In addition, regardless of the wood type, the wood should be sealed in some way to prevent moisture penetration. If you elect to paint the fence, make sure to paint all sides of the lumber, including freshly cut ends. Moreover, make sure to use noncorrosive fasteners to build it, such as hot-tipped galvanized and stainless steel nails or screws. Using other types of fasteners could very likely result in ugly stain marks showing up on the fence as the fasteners slowly corrode. Even worse, the fence eventually could collapse. Another major concern when building a privacy fence is wind. A large vertically standing solid surface is easily susceptible to wind damage. Consequently, make sure to install the posts at least a couple of feet down into the ground, and preferably set them in concrete. In addition, by using lattice or coming up with a privacy fence design that includes adjacent/ staggered vertical lumber pieces that are at angles to each other, wind can flow more easily through the privacy fence and reduce

The height for an off-the-shelf vinyl or wooden privacy fence is typically about 6 feet. However, you can sometimes customize them a bit to extend them higher. In addition, you can come up with your own custom design to achieve your own particular style and height. Often, homeowners who come up

A beautiful landscape doesn’t happen on its own. You can help your lawn, trees and shrubs get off to a healthy growing season.

Your landscape is an extension your lawn and everyone will be of your home. Master the basics of caring for happy – you and your yard. “Trees and shrubs add tremendous appeal to our urban home environments, but to thrive, particularly out of their natural world, they require regular care with added nutrients and protection against invasive pests,” said Ben Hamza, Ph.D., director of technical operations at TruGreen. Keep in mind these tips as you get ready to take care of your yard this spring. Clean up: New spring growth can be hampered if it’ s covered with debris. Clean out dead leaves, branches, trash or anything else that could impair your lawn’s growth. Prune properly: Corrective pruning of your trees and shrubs can make them not only look better, but help them grow better , too. Don’t top-shear overgrown shrubs or trees – thin them out to preserve their shape. Springblooming plants like azaleas, rhododendrons, forsythia and lilacs should only be pruned after they flower. Put the right plants in the right place: When you’re ready to plant new plants, make sure you put them where they’ll thrive. Be sure you know the light requirements for a new plant. Fences or other structures can restrict air flow, which can interfere with growth. Make sure you have the right type of grass for your lawn. Wherever grass has a hard time growing, plant shady ground covers instead. If you’re considering sod, make sure the temperature is warm enough for grass growth. Firmly pack sod into the soil and water as needed to encourage deep root growth.

N ourish the roots: Spring lawn, tree and shrub roots seek nourishment after the dor mancy of winter. Make sure your early spring fertilizer has less nitrogen and more phosphorus to promote strong roots. Be sure to keep fertilizer on target to prevent run-off, and sweep fertilizer granules that may reach pavement back onto your lawn. Get ready to water: Give your lawn a slow, steady watering about once a week, but adjust depending upon rainfall, grass and soil type in your area. Follow the owner’s operating manual to take an automated sprinkler system out of hibernation. Ensure sprinkler heads and related water lines are working properly. Make sure the irrigation system covers your landscape efficiently. For example, you can place a one-inch deep, empty food can in the middle of the lawn area to measure the depth of water collected after each watering cycle to ensure uniformity. Mulch the right way: Mulch can keep soil in place, reduce weeds and retain moisture. But you need to make sure you’re doing it right. When the soil has warmed up, apply three inches of organic mulch to base of shrubs and trees to help conserve soil moisture and to reduce weed pressure. But be mindful not to cover the flare of the tree base in mulch “volcanoes,” which can lead to rot. When your lawn is actively growing, return grass clippings back to the soil for added lawn nutrients and consider using composted materials to nourish plants.

This is a full month earlier than normal, which means that we may be too late to even catch it if we stick to our normal time line. Using phenological indicators can help us track the timing. Forsythia bloom has always been a great way to time the application of crabgrass applications and gives the best chance to get the better of the tricky crabgrass. If you miss time your crabgrass control don’t worry, there are a number of post emergents that can help you out, but timing is important there too and will cost you. A reminder: if you use a commercial company for your applications, be sure they are N.Y .S.D.E.C. certified and that they provide you a written contract. It’s the law. Watering is also an important factor in doing it right. While you’re trying to find every available reason to be outside this spring, termites ar e doing the exact opposite – trying to worm their way indoors and devour your walls and floors. And they certainly aren’t feasting for free. “Termites have an insatiable appetite for cellulose found in wood, eating 24-hours a day, seven days a week. They cause serious and costly damage and can compr omise the structural stability of a home,” said Missy Henriksen, vice pr esident of public af fairs for the N ational Pest Management Association (N PMA). “N PMA advises homeowners to have their homes inspected annually.” `Termite infestations that ar e left untreated can quickly damage your home’ s structural integrity. To make matters worse, damages caused by wood-destr oying insects, such as termites, ar e typically not cover ed by homeowners’ insurance policies – leaving you to foot the bill. The “silent destr oyers” and their saw-toothed jaws can significantly r educe the long-term pr operty value and financial investment of a house. The N PMA estimates that termites cause at least $5 billion in property losses each year in the U.S. Use this checklist to put a stop to termite infestation: √ Inspect the perimeter of a home for r otting wood, mud tubes or a visible termite presence. √ Pay particular attention to doors and windowsills, looking for shed wings. √ Avoid water accumulation near a home’ s foundation by diverting water away with downspouts and gutters. √ N ever bury wood scraps in the yar d. hen it comes to spring/summer home w maintenance, a little bit of time and elbow grease can translate into big savings and avoid costly repairs down the line.

Everything from changing light bulbs to programming thermostats can be easily done by homeowners, experts say . Replace a simple part on an appliance, such as a burned-out stove element. Install fresh batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Check ground fault circuit interrupters. A professional may be needed to tackle some repairs, but in most cases, armed with a checklist and a pair of binoculars (to avoid climbing on the roof), you can save time and money by doing the initial inspection yourself. With a clipboard in hand, you’ll want to eye the exterior of your home, basement or crawlspace for: • Sidewalk, driveway, chimney and foundation cracks, mold or mildew • Malfunctioning sump pumps • Clogged vent caps • Loose or cracked deck boards or patio blocks • Debris-filled gutters and downspouts • Loose shingles and siding • Gaps in window caulking, dirty windows and broken windowpanes Vacuuming or spray cleaners can remove a winter’s worth of dirt and dust accumulating inside your home on registers, return ducts, lampshades, lighting fixtures, windowsills and windowpanes. Also, thoroughly cleanse range hoods and kitchen vents of grease and dirt. Extend some small changes to in a decorative capacity as well. Think about draping furniture with lightweight slipcovers; taking down heavy winter drapes and replacing them with sheer fabric window treatments; or even applying a fresh coat of paint that captures the feel of a seaside vacation. Tracking down the mighty pest TERMITE infestations

ermites have long been the bane of existence for the homeowner. These insects cause billions of dollars in damage every year, according to entomologists.

Because termites generally do damage while inside of walls or other out-of-sight areas, homeowners often do not know they have an infestation until it’s too late. Detection can be tricky, says Jim Skinner, owner of A&C Pest Management in East Meadow , because termites seem to staying undercover. “When I was growing up in my father’ s pest control business,” Skinner explains, “we knew to never plan anything during March through June. This is when termites swarm.” For the last few years termites across the country are not swarming and no one knows why, Skinner says. “Although there are many university studies in the works, there are no findings as of yet. Most people would say that if there are no termites swarming it is a good thing, that they are probably all dead. Unfortunately, the one thing that studies have shown is that they are not dead. They are very much alive and still eating structural members of people’s homes. It is just that most homeowners don’t know they have an infestation because those termites that would normally swarm (which is how most people realize they have a problem) are not coming out.” A termite mating swarm can consist of 100 to several hundred black insects on average. They usually swarm in one place in a home and will gradually fly to areas where there is light. “It is a spooky sight if you have never seen it GREENWAY before,” says Skinner. “If you’ve seen this you are one of the lucky ones, since that is the indication to most homeowners of a problem that needs attention.” So if there is no swarm, what is a homeowner to do? Stay vigilant, Skinner advises. “Look all around your home and the foundation for signs of termites. Pay particular attention to the structural members. You may have termite damage in your home and not know it. That is why most pest control companies will come out to inspect your home at no charge to find out what is going on.” While the inspector is there, pick his brain to find out if there is anything you can do to reduce your risk of getting termites. Termite vs.ant infestation Differentiating termites from certain types of ants can be confusing, leaving homeowners to guess which unwanted intruder is around the house and how to handle these potentially harmful houseguests. This is a method of dispersal to start new colonies elsewhere.
