Glorious Summer Fun

N

ow that the winter season has past, we anxiously await the commencement of another glorious summer in our “Crown Jewel”... Long Beach.

Locals and out-of-towners alike will flock to our beautiful seashore, and frequent our numerous eating establishments offering a wide variety of cuisines to appease even the most discerning palate. Just imagine beautiful blue skies with billowy clouds and softly crashing waves hitting the shore. What a wonderful canvas for lazy and carefree days of swimming, boating, or just plain relaxation with a good book. Our boardwalk will once again be alive with joggers, couples strolling hand in hand, bicyclers and children.

Let’s take this opportunity to give thanks and praise to our brave and dedicated police officers, our auxiliary police officers, our career and volunteer firefighters and lifeguard crew, who work so hard to keep Long Beach residents and visitors safe from harm. We applaud their dedication and tip our hats to them all. Bravo to a job well done!

Our 2011 Dinner Dance was a huge success and attracted more than 800 attendees to a gala honoring a very special group of individuals, including: Alan Rosenberg as Man of the Year; David Pinto as Merchant of the Year; and Dr. Robert Canter as Professional of the Year. Additionally, City Court Judge Frank D. DiKranis was the recipient of the Edmund A. Buscemi Public Service Award. The chamber also hosted its Summer and Winter Blast networking parties, both of which were enormously successful.

nesses are managing to weather the storm. The Long Beach Chamber of Commerce keeps growing and continually adds new members to its roster for 2012. We can proudly boast that we are one of the largest chambers in Nassau County. This is due to the efforts of the chamber office manager Janet Cohen and all our chamber officers, especially Executive Director Warren Vegh and Executive Vice President Mark Tannenbaum.

Memorial Day is here, marking the official start of the beach season and the unofficial start of summer. The world seems to move a bit slower during the long, lazy days of summer, when those of us with sand in our shoes return to our beloved ocean and beach.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BIOS MICHAEL J. KERR Michael J. Kerr was born in Brooklyn and came to Long Beach at the age of one, thus beginning the fourth generation in Long Beach.

He attended Long Beach schools and graduated from Long Beach High School in 1964.

In 1969, Kerr founded Fire Command Co. Inc., a firm he owns that provides a wide range of fire protection services and equipment, serving Nassau, Suffolk, and the five boroughs. He holds a certificate of Fire Technology from SUNY Farmingdale, attended Brooklyn Polytechnic University and holds a certificate from Hofstra University in occupational safety and health.

Kerr is currently serving his seventh year as president of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce. He served as executive vice president of the Chamber four years prior to that. He also is currently commencing his fourth six-year stint as Presidential Officer of the Exempt Fireman’s Association.

Kerr served as the city's fire commissioner from December 1998 to April of 2006, donating his salary for the purchase of Fire Department equipment. Kerr has been a member of the Long Beach Volunteer Fire Department for the past 47 years, serving first as treasurer, then Lieutenant Captain, Assistant Chief and rising to Chief, a position he held from 1973 to 1975, and held the distinction of being the department's youngest fire chief when elected.

He is a member of the Long Beach Lions Club, Long Beach Historical Society, the Nassau County Chiefs, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, Fireman’s Association of the State of New York, Nassau County Fireman’s Association, South Shore Fireman’s Association and on the Board of Trustees of the Long Beach Medical Center, to name a few.

A devoted family man, Kerr has been married to his wife, Janice, for more than 20 years. They have three children: Jennifer, Andrew and Joshua.

LAWRENCE "LARRY" ELOVICH Lawrence E. Elovich, known by all as "Larry," considers himself a native of Long Beach even though he was born and raised in Brooklyn. He did, however, summer in Long Beach with his family from 1950 to 1960. Those summers were spent working for the City of Long Beach in various capacities, starting in the early 50s with beach combing then to filling pot holes with the Highway Department, and culminating with the position of Special Patrolman with the Long Beach Police Department. During law school, Elovich worked as a physical education teacher in Harran High School in New York City’s afterschool program. He also

worked as a high school basketball referee.

Elovich graduated from Brooklyn's Lafayette High School in 1953 and from Long Island University in 1957. He later graduated Brooklyn Law School in 1961, and almost immediately began practicing law in Long Beach. While he is respected in the legal profession as a trial lawyer, specializing in personal injury, he is equally respected for his political acumen. Elovich served as Long Beach Democratic Chairman from 1967 to 1973, and has been active in the political field ever since.

He continues to be an advisor to political figures on the local, state and national level. The question is often asked, "did politics make Larry a successful lawyer or did being a lawyer make him a politician?"

His interest in politics was launched at approximately the same time as his law practice, so it's hard to tell which came first, but both disciplines continue to thrive.

Over the years, Elovich has served in the city in many capacities.

He has been a volunteer fireman and was president of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce from 1981 to 2006. He is presently chairman of the chamber's board, and has served as a trustee, vice president and secretary to Long Beach Medical Center since 1967. Additionally, he has been active in various charitable and civic organizations within the city and has served as president of Long Beach Lion's Club as well as Exalted Ruler of the Long Beach Elks.

Elovich has also served as a trustee at Nassau University Medical Center since 2001, and is also a trustee of the Long Island Power Authority. Since 1975, Elovich has been a director of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association and served as LAWPAC Trustee and as Vice Chairman from 1991 to 2003. He is also a former chairman of the Nassau County Bar Association legislative committee, and has served as a member of the New York Governor's Judicial Screening Committee.

Elovich continues to practice law and is senior partner of Elovich & Adell in Long Beach, specializing in personal injury and medical malpractice law. In his spare time, Elovich enjoys keeping physically fit, playing golf, tennis, jogging, running races and working out daily at a local gym.

Elovich has been married to Helen Mirel since 1963 and they have three daughters: Lisa, Lauree and Lynn, as well as nine grandchildren.

There is no question that family is the best part of this busy man's life!

WARREN VEGH Executive Director Warren Vegh has been a member of the Chamber of Commerce for more than 19 years, and has served on the Board of Directors for the past 11 years. Vegh oversees the day-to-day operations of the chamber, including chairing committees and organizing various meetings and events.

Vegh is a lifelong resident of Long Beach. His company, W & L Pool Servicing, Inc., has served commercial facilities, beach clubs, country clubs, camps, condominiums and homeowners’ associations across Long Island and the Rockaways for more than 29 years. His years of business experience bring valuable insight to the management of the chamber.

Vegh is also a teacher and has taught in the Long Beach School District for 29 years. He is an elected trustee of the Long Beach Public Library, currently serving as president, as he completes his second full term.

During his tenure as a library trustee, Vegh has worked together with fellow trustees and community members to bring back a new library to the West End. Last year, in the spirit of "Go Green," he worked on a solar-paneling project installed on the roof of the Long Beach Library, an initiative that will save energy and taxpayer dollars in the years to come. He has also worked with trustees to keep the budget in check, while continuing to enhance all areas of the library for our citizens.

gether for internships as well as recruiting business professionals from various industries to speak with students on Career Day. Vegh is currently serving on the board of the Long Beach Medical Center’s Coalition To Prevent Underage Drinking.

He was the past president of his temple and is a current board member. He has served on the Board of Directors for many civic organizations, including the Lions Club and Long Beach-Lido Beach Little League; he is also a member of the Kiwanis Club and Historical Society.

Vegh has served as the chairman and master of ceremonies at the chamber’s Annual Dinner Dance; and is one of the founders, and a chairman, of the chamber's Summer and Winter Blasts. He continues to work diligently with fellow officers of the chamber to promote Restaurant Week; organize and run monthly meetings and networking events for merchants.

In 2009, Vegh was the recipient of the chamber's Man of the Year award, recognizing him for his service to the community at the Vision of Hope Golf Classic and Dinner fundraising event. Vegh continues to work with city officials for the welfare of the merchants and the City of Long Beach.

MARK TANNENBAUM, CLTC, LUTCF Mark Tannenbaum, CLTC, LUTCF is the executive vice president of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce and has been a resident in the Long Beach/South Shore region of Nassau County for more than 45 years. He lives with his domestic partner, Michele Kivolowitz, and they have three daughters and three grandchildren between them.

After a 35-year career in business management in New York City, Tannenbaum set up his professional practice on Long Island.

Tannenbaum is a financial advisor specializing in financial, protection and retirement strategies for individuals and businesses. He uses his forty plus years of business management experience and skills to guide his clients in setting and achieving their financial objectives.

His commitment to his clients is to work diligently in being a trusted, lifelong advisor.

As executive vice president and a member of the Board of Directors, Tannenbaum devotes his time and skills in giving back to the community by organizing and helping to develop many projects to promote and benefit the members of the chamber. He has used his business management skills to create and organize a highly successful, bi-annual Restaurant Week in Long Beach. When Tannenbaum first joined the chamber, he founded and developed the annual Summer Blast event. During his tenure, Tannenbaum has served as chairman of the Summer Blast and has been instrumental in the planning of the Winter Blast each season. He also has developed numerous advertising campaigns for the chamber’s membership. The president of the chamber has relied on Tannenbaum to represent the chamber membership at various City Council and community meetings and state initiatives.

This past spring, after a five month process, Tannenbaum "pioneered" by launching a group dental plan for the chamber mem-

bership. This group plan is the first ever to be offered to a chamber.

Tannenbaum is also an active member in The National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, the National Care Planning Council for Long Term Care, The Center for Long Term Care Reform, a Charter Member of ElderCare Matters Alliance and the American Association for Long Term Care Insurance. He is a graduate of the American College and The Corporation for Long-Term Care Certification, achieving the designations of Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow and Certified Long Term Care Planner. In 2010, Tannenbaum received the Vision of Hope’s Professional of the Year award.

DR. IRA GRUSHACK Vice President Dr. Ira Grushack has lived and practiced chiropractic care with his wife, Dr. Jo Eisman, in Long Beach for the past 30 years. He is proud to be a current trustee of the Long Beach Public Library. He has also served as president for B’nai B’rith, as well as on the boards of Temples Beth Shalom and Emanuel, Council on the Arts, and the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce. In an effort to better serve the health care needs of the Long Beach community, his practice has expanded to include acupuncture, massage, nutrition and trigger point therapy. He’s proud to be helping Long Beach to become an even better place to live.

STEVEN LEIBSTEIN Vice President Steven Leibstein opened Jewelry by Steven in Long Beach in 1992 after more than 30 years experience in all aspects of the jewelry industry. He built a business that quickly grew from modest roots, and now boasts a beautifully unique collection of merchandise.

His sales staff recognizes the faces and needs of the community, and consists of a team of artisans capable of the most intricate custom designs and creations. He has recently embraced the new technology within the jewelry industry with a Computer Aided Design and 3D growing machine.

Leibstein is passionate about is his craft, second only to his love of animals, and enjoys the social and personal relationships he has with his customers. A strong supporter of local events, charities, and religious organizations, he is an active community presence in his position as a vice president of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce.

PAUL LEONE Vice President Paul Leone is a licensed master electrician who owns and operates All Good Electric, Corp., located in the West End of Long Beach, a company he started in 2001. He brought his strong belief in honesty, sincerity, and fairness which he stands by as the key to success. He is always working to build strong, long-lasting relationships with customers and the community. Being passionate about his work, he is always willing to help find solutions to any problem.

Leone has been a member of the chamber since 2001 and has been a vice president for the last three years. Committing his time and skills, he is very active in planning and organizing the Summer and Winter Blast events, as well as helping with many chamber initiatives to benefit the merchants.

Leone was born and raised in Canarsie, Brooklyn, a neighborhood where everyone knew their neighbors, merchants and police officers. Upon moving to Long Beach at age 35, he was pleased to find that same sense of community and quickly blended in. He met his wife, Colleen, in Long Beach and they have three children Ava, Jack and Stella, who are or will be attending the local public schools.

BOB MACDONALD Vice President Bob MacDonald has been the owner and operator of Broward Limousine for the past 27 years. Starting as a small limousine company with a focus on corporate work, Broward Limousine is one of the largest full service transportation companies on the South Shore, operating Lincoln Town Cars, stretch limousines, specialty vehicles, and the new coach bus division, including party buses and motor coaches.

MacDonald is well known in the community and has been a member of the chamber for 22 years. He became a vice president in January, and serves on many committees. MacDonald is committed to giving his time and resources — on numerous occasions, Broward Limousine has donated car service for events involving the chamber, such as Restaurant Week and last year’s Winter Blast. He has always been involved with charitable work and is continually donating his time to his community, including his work with the Little League and many charitable organizations.

ADAM ROTHSTEIN Vice President Adam Rothstein is the branch manger of Emigrant Savings Bank located on E. Park Ave. in Long Beach. Rothstein has worked in Long Beach for more than 10 years, and is a long-time member of the Chamber of Commerce. He resides in Wantagh with his wife, Mary, and daughter, Annie.

FRANK TRIFARO Chamber Vice President Frank Trifaro is a vice president and branch manager with Community National Bank located on Long Beach Road in Oceanside. He has been in the finance industry for more than 10 years. Trifaro has served on numerous committees, such as the annual dinner dance committee, and he is currently serving as chairman to the Restaurant Week committee. He resides in East Islip with his wife Maureen and his son, Andrew.

BEN RUTELLA Ben Rutella attended New York Institute of Technology in New York City and received a Bachelors Degree in architecture, and completed a one-year special thesis study program related to city planning, historic building design, and received an accredited Masters Degree.

During his thesis, he aided in the New York City Urban Renewal Project, known as the South Street Seaport, and worked in conjunction with world renowned developers such as the Rouse Company.

He opened his own practice as a design-build firm in 1982 with an office in Westbury. He received his professional architect license in 1992 to practice as a registered architect and design professional.

Rutella now has 30 years of architecture, design and construction experience, having completed projects in New York City, Nassau and Suffolk counties, upstate and even Florida. He is also an associate member of the American Institute of Architects and became an executive board member.

In 2000, Rutella relocated his practice to Suffolk County during the residential building boom. He was instrumental in designing and

building mansion homes on the North and South Shores of Long Island. Rutella has worked with many private land developers and builders, planning and designing residential developments such as Woodbury Estates, Evergreen Estates, Mansion at Sagamore Hills, The Manors at Chester Hills in Huntington and commercial shopping centers throughout the state, including the Waldbaum's Shopping Center in Long Beach.

His professional architectural practice is currently located in Long Beach, and he has been a resident for seven years. Rutella is currently president of a very active business networking group, Elephant Networking, in Long Beach. For the past three years, he has been an active member of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce, and was recently elected to serve as its treasurer, and is now part of the executive board.

During his three years with the chamber he has actively participated on Restaurant Week and special event committees. Rutella’s background, experience and professional motivation is to work with the chamber and local merchants to help fuel the city’s future growth, prosperity and reconstruction.

LES JACOBS Recording Secretary Les Jacobs is the co-owner of Island Park Car Wash & Detail Center and Island Park Shell Rapid Lube, located on Austin Blvd. in Island Park.

Jacobs was a municipal bond trader, underwriter and investment banking advisor to municipalities throughout the country for 15 years.

He subsequently started New York City's first affordable and accessible transportation company, dedicated to the disabled community in the five boroughs. He followed that effort by co-founding a women’s footwear company. Jacobs has been actively involved with the American Cancer Society for the past 15 years in all aspects of cancer awareness and fundraising.

Jacobs doesn’t live in Long Beach, but he has immersed his business into the community as a strong supporter of local schools, religious organizations, and charities. The car wash contributes a percentage of sales toward The Long Beach Polar Bears and Make-aWish Foundation, and also provides free car washes on Veteran’s Day to all who have served our country, in addition to regular specials for ladies and seniors.

MARTIN GOLDENBERG Corresponding Secretary Martin Goldenberg has been a resident of Long Beach for 24 years. He and his wife, Amy, married in the city and are lifelong residents with their two children. For 34 years, Goldenberg has been an account executive at Newsday Media Group. He covers southwest Nassau County, handling advertising display sales in Newsday, Hometown Shopper, This Week Pennysaver, newsday. com, and circulars. Goldenberg has been a member of the chamber for many years, and was elected to its Board of Directors this year. He currently works on the Restaurant Week committee, and serves as a liaison between the chamber and Newsday Media Group.

Back to an earlier time

L

ong Beach — what a place! A privileged few know why and the population continues to grow.

Once a playground for the wealthy, now a sandbox for all. The Long Beach Historical and Preservation Society makes it a goal to attract an interested audience and tell our island’s tale. The best place to hear it is in our Long Beach Museum, complete with archives and docents who will tell all.

Geologists love the term "barrier island," but local historians lean more toward "barricade’" island, for the earlier segregation within the city confines, where plenty of unorthodox behavior went on. Separated from the mainland and accessible primarily by flat-bottom boats, and later by a swaying, primitive wooden bridge, everyone touched by Long Beach’s natural beauty, white sand and friendly sea could be counted on to come back for more.

From the seasonal migrations of returning Algonquin families in the 18th century to its Gatsby-esque, Roarin’ residents of the 1920s annual return to their ‘West End,’ Long Beach was a city of play, a safe haven.

Because of World War I, Sen. William Reynolds’s Long Beach ‘Estates’ concept met financial failure, leaving large summer homes vacant. The opportunity to buy large homes for large families, not just summers but year-round abodes, meant the barricaded island would become a safe, healthy home for children and families.

With Ellis Island’s new Americans at our door and the Great War behind us, these families chose to live on our ‘Barri-

Broadway. cade Island.’ Their children are Americans, true, first-generation Americans, and now they have a safe, healthy community in which to begin their new lives. From Village Hall to City Hall, they continued to build homes, schools, libraries, churches, synagogues and movie theaters — there was a time when five theaters operated in town at the same time, harmoniously.

Even the crash of the stock market, the year 1929 saw the opening of the Granada Towers and the Lido Hotel. The quality of life here was uncompromised, protected on our Barricade Island.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING 1643 - Sachem Tackapausha barters with Hempstead settlers to share the long white sandy beach.

1797 - Our island is named on Stewart’s map.

1837 - Wreck of the barque Mexico.

1849 - Building of a House of Refuge, a United States LifeSaving Station.

1861 - The Baymen’s secession from New York State (‘But not the Union’).

1869 - Davenport (Deb) Wright builds Long Beach’s first home.

1880 - The construction of the largest seaside resort in the world, the Long Beach Hotel.

1906 - The entrance on our shores of visionary master-builder, Senator William H. Reynolds.

1907 - Senator Reynolds builds the first concrete boardwalk in Long Beach; the Atlantic Gulf & Pacific Company starts to dredge the Channel bearing his name.

1908 - Construction of ‘The Estates of Long Beach’ signals the beginning of Long Beach as a ‘Planned Community.’

1912 - The resort community of Long Beach becomes an

incorporated village.

1914 - Long Beach dedicates its first school 1915 - Lido Golf Course is designed 1919 - We have Walks and a West End bungalow community 1922 - Long Beach becomes a self-governing city; new milliondollar bridge built over Reynolds Channel; Long Beach-on-theOcean Trolley begins service 1927 - Long Beach Hospital dedicated 1929 - Stock market crashes and the modern urban Long Beach begins.

A MESSAGE FROM JACK SCHNIRMAN

A

s we approach the summer months, all of us are eager to enjoy our beautiful beach, boardwalk and ocean in Long Beach.

Even while dealing with the difficult financial situation we inherited, we have been working around the clock to make repairs and improve the overall safety of the boardwalk. To that end, we recently launched a new initiative that has crews

working to fix the boardwalk seven days a week, without any additional overtime costs. Along with upgrading various support structures, the Department of Public Works was recently able to replace all 98 boardwalk lights with more cost-effective and energy-efficient Jack Schnirman fixtures.

The lighting project was largely paid for through a community development grant. Additional reconstruction projects will also be taking place throughout the city as we strive to make Long Beach an even greater place to live, work and play.

I’m thrilled to be spending my summer in the “City by the Sea,” and I look forward to seeing you around town or on the boardwalk, during a morning run or bike ride. Don’t hesitate to say hi and share your hopes, suggestions and ideas. Together, we will continue to improve Long Beach for all our families to enjoy.

A

s the weather gets warmer, we realize that summer is not too far away. For me, summer begins with the Memorial Day weekend and of course, the Memorial Day Parade.

It is wonderful that so many residents come out to cheer on the marchers â&#x20AC;&#x201D; especially our veterans â&#x20AC;&#x201D; for whom this holiday is celebrated. These brave men and women who have served in our military did so to protect our liberty, and have allowed us the freedom to live in and build our communities. We also pay homage to those that lost their lives defending our country.

Ever since I moved here in 1980, I have always known that I made the right choice in making Long Beach my home. My friends and family who visit here marvel at the strong sense of community.

Every year, more and more people plunge into the Atlantic Ocean on Super Bowl Sunday to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We end the summer season with hundreds of volleyball teams that compete to raise money for another worthwhile cause, the Michelle Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neill Foundation. During the summer, the city hosts the Waterfront Warriors. During this time, residents open their homes to host veterans, many who are amputees and recovering from injuries sustained during the war. They and their families are treated to the generosity, warmth and hospitality that is typical of our residents and business owners. These are just a few of the many events that are held throughout the year.

As your Legislator, I am proud to have secured funding that

led to the renovations of the parking mall between Long Beach Road and Monroe Blvd. I am proud of my involvement in bringing the Farmers Market to Kennedy Plaza and this year, our local artists will also be at the plaza on Saturdays. I urge all of you to check out the fresh fruits and Denise Ford vegetables as well as the art being shown. I love the artwork that I purchased and have hanging in my ofďŹ ce as well as my home.

We also need to remain a safe community. Just as the summer is a time for fun and vacation, it is also a season for hurricanes.

I urge you to attend the hurricane preparedness meeting that I sponsor with representatives from our OfďŹ ce of Emergency Management. If you cannot attend, make sure to read the emergency preparedness information that is mailed to your homes and follow the advice given. Also, if you can, please watch out for your neighbors as well!

Another important reminder is to practice safety in the sun.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget to wear your sunscreen and always swim near a lifeguard. Everyone should keep hydrated, especially when it is very hot and humid. As you watch out for your family, remember that your pets also need protection as well â&#x20AC;&#x201D; they need plenty of water and should never be left in a parked car for long periods of time.

fter this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winter, we are all looking forward to a wonderful summer in Long Beach.

As a lifelong resident, I feel blessed to live in this beautiful community and enjoy its fantastic quality of life.

Any time of year, Long Beach is a special place to live, but nothing beats our summers. We have it all: the spectacular beaches, the boardwalk, the festivals and, of course, the people. I have always believed that what really makes Long Beach outstanding is our people. Our residents have a tremendously generous spirit, bringing great energy and enthusiasm to events like the Michelle Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neill Volleyball Tournament, which raises money for children with cancer; the Melanoma Walk to raise awareness about skin cancer; and the annual Long Beach Polar Bear Swim on Superbowl Sunday, which has raised millions of dollars for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Long Beach also brings the joy of surďŹ ng to children with autism and other developmental disabilities.

As a lifeguard for more than ďŹ ve decades, I know about all the magic the beach offers. But whether you are swimming, surďŹ ng, boating, walking on the boardwalk or just relaxing on the sand, please make sure to wear sunscreen!

Sunscreens lose effectiveness over time. If you suspect that your sunscreen is more than a year old, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t use it! I continue to introduce legislation requiring sunscreen manufacturers to print expiration dates on their products. Until then, when in doubt, Harvey Weisenberg throw it out!

It is my extraordinary privilege to get to know so many of you and to work on your behalf. I continue to focus on bringing resources to the institutions at the heart of our community: our schools, hospitals, libraries, community and recreation centers; and of course programs that serve children, the elderly and those with disabilities. I am committed to protecting our beautiful natural resources and ensuring that those who protect us â&#x20AC;&#x201D; our dedicated ďŹ reďŹ ghters, law enforcement ofďŹ cers and emergency medical personnel â&#x20AC;&#x201D; have the resources they need.

FIRE DEPARTMENT

T

he Long Beach Fire Department serves and protects the City of Long Beach, as well as the East Atlantic Beach and Atlantic Beach Fire Districts.

The Fire Department responds with approximately 150 volunteer firefighters and 32 career firefighters. Our communications office is staffed 24/7 by 20 part-time dispatchers.

Richard Corbett is currently the Chief of Department, and has 26-years of dedicated service. Alongside him are 1st Assistant Chief Antonio Cuevas, Jr. and 2nd Assistant Chief Robert Tuccillo. Together, they work to ensure that the City receives the best emergency service coverage possible. Our firefighters are extensively trained in the latest firefighting tactics. Many have also received special training in vehicle extrication, hazardous materials response, rope rescue and other technical rescue techniques. Our three ambulances are staffed with emergency medical technicians, many of whom are trained to provide advanced life support procedures.

As one of the busiest departments on Long Island, last year the department responded to 4,745 calls overall. These included reports of fire, EMS calls, auto accidents, water rescues and other types of emergency calls in addition to outside requests for assistance from our surrounding jurisdictions. We work hand-in-hand with our dedicated Police Department and other city services during times of inclement weather, such as hurricanes and blizzards as well as during blackouts or other major widespread emergencies.

The Fire Department operates out of three fire stations: Headquarters is located at the rear of City Hall; Station One is at the corner of Maple Blvd. and E. Park Ave. and Station Two is located at the corner of Indiana and West Park avenues.

With the support of our residents and the City Council, we are equipped with some of the finest equipment available. The department responds with five fire engines, a 100-foot ladder tower, a 95-foot tower ladder, a heavy rescue truck, three advanced life support ambulances, a floodlight truck, and a field communications vehicle. Also, several utility vehicles respond with a jet ski and other water rescue equipment to reports of emergencies in our surrounding bodies of water. These vehicles are four-wheel drive capable and also assist during times of inclement weather.

Recently, a fire training facility was built in the rear parking lot of City Hall. This allows our firefighters to practice firefighting and rescue techniques from the safety of a controlled environment. Constant upgrades are being built into the facility al-

Safety rules: Long Beach Lifeguard Beach Patrol Safety guidelines for use of body boards.

1. All body boards must have a leash cord attached.

The cord must be used by the rider.

2. All children under the age of 8 must be watched by a parent or guardian.

3. Only body boards may be used. No other flotation devices may be used on the City of Long Beach oceanfront. Inflatable tubes or water wings are strictly prohibited.

4. Body boards/surfboards are used at the discretion of the lifeguards on the beach. Body boards may be regulated as to time of day, distance from shore and number allowed. Please obey the lifeguards.

5. In the event of rough water or other conditions that may prevail, the Beach Patrol Administration may ban the use of body boards/surfboards for a period of time.

6. The use of body boards and surf boards in the same bathing area is prohibited by Health Department regulation.

The safety regulations have been established to allow for the enjoyment of our patrons. They in no way imply that the use of body boards or surf boards is safe and will not result in injury.

Safe summer fun Paul Gillespie, the Long Beach chief of lifeguards, urges everyone who takes advantage of the Long Beach oceanfront this summer to obey the rules of the beach and listen to the lifeguards. Chief Gillespie has issued the following guidelines for a safe summer in our beautiful corner of the Atlantic.

BASIC RULES OF THE BEACH Learn to swim and never swim alone.

■ Only swim when lifeguards are on duty.

■ Lifeguards are on duty, weather permitting, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. weekends only from May 26-June 17, and daily from June 23-Sept. 3. Beach passes are required when lifeguards are on duty.

■ Always go to the beach with an adult - and swim in front of the lifeguard between the green flags designated as the swimming area.

■ If you are in trouble, call out for help and wave your arms above your head. Do not panic.

■ Do not hesitate to call a lifeguard for help in any medical situation on the sand or in the water.

■ Stay off the rock jetties and never swim near them.

■ Check water conditions with lifeguards for undercurrents or sandbars. Both can be dangerous.

■ Report dangerous situations to the lifeguard.

■ Check the depth of underwater surface by jumping or walking, not diving head first!

■ Don’t attempt to make any rescue yourself. Get a lifeguard; they are trained to do the job. Do not interfere with lifeguards making a rescue.

■ When you hear the whistle, look at the lifeguard chair. They may want your attention.

■ Beaches close at 6 p.m. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty!

■ Surfing is permitted on specific beaches. Visit longbeachny. org/beach for surfing, concert, and event schedules. People are not permitted on the beach between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

■

FOR YOUR SAFETY, PLEASE REMEMBER: ■

No alcoholic beverages on the beach or boardwalk.

No bonfires or barbecues on the beach or on the boardwalk.

Swimming is prohibited without a lifeguard on duty.

■ No animals are not permitted on the beach or boardwalk.

■ No glass on the beach.

■ All body boards must have a leash cord attached.

■ Leash cord must be used by the rider.

■ All children must be watched by a parent or guardian.

RECREATION DEPARTMENT WHO MAY USE THE BEACH? Everyone above the age of 13 must have paid the admission fee to be permitted onto the beach on weekends from May 26 through June 17, and daily from June 23 through Sept.

3. A birth certificate is required for each child listed on the application. Non-residents are entitled to the same privileges as residents.

WHERE CAN I PURCHASE A SEASON BEACH PASS? Beach passes may be purchased at the Gazebo just east of Magnolia Blvd. on West Bay Drive (across from the ice arena) or at the boardwalk office on Edwards Boulevard and the boardwalk. Passes may be purchased with cash, credit card, or check. We currently accept Visa and Mastercard.

RECREATION DEPARTMENT SUMMER PLAYGROUND PROGRAM 2012 The Long Beach Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Long Beach City School District, conducts an eightweek summer playground for children ages 5-12. Teams are sponsored by local merchants and organizations. Trophies are awarded for league and playoff champions.

YOUTH BEACH VOLLEYBALL A co-ed Beach Volleyball program is offered to Long Beach youth ages 10-17 during the summer months. The program is held at 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday on the beach volleyball courts at Riverside Boulevard. 10-12 year olds will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays and 13-17 year olds will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays.

SUNRISE & SUNSET BEACH YOGA The Long Beach Recreation Department is offering two Yoga Classes on the beach this summer. Registration is taking place at the Long Beach Recreation Department’s Swimming Pool located on Magnolia Boulevard and West Bay Drive in Long Beach. T

he Long Beach Police Department has recently reorganized to provide more efficient services to residents, while reducing costs to the taxpayer.

The reorganization has added an additional seven police officers and two police sergeants to the patrol force. The additional officers on patrol give us greater flexibility on a daily basis to provide vital services to our residents. We operate under a “community policing” dictate. This cooperation with the public is the most current strategy in policing. We also subscribe to the concept of “if you see something, say something.”

Never hesitate to call 911, because it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

The Police Department’s mission is to provide the safest environment for our residents, businesses and visitors. Our new mantra is “We are here to help.” The LBPD has one of the best response times of any police department. This quick call to action ensures that situations do not get out of control, offenders are arrested at the scene and order is restored. We have been able to maintain a low crime rate because of the proficiency of our patrol force.

The department also maintains a highly skilled Detective Division, consisting of eight detectives, one detective sergeant and one detective lieutenant. These officers are responsible for all investigations. They all have extensive training and expertise in many areas of the criminal investigation field, from narcotics to homicide and everything in between. They are highly regarded by their counterparts in both Nassau and Suffolk

counties, as well as the New York City Police Department.

There are many services provided by our department: we currently have two certified school resource officers that work with our schools to foster a positive relationship with students, Michael Tangney while educating them about the law.

We also participate in career days and a “teen night out” in the high school. Our nine specially trained motorcycle officers conduct traffic enforcement and perform ceremonial duties at parades and special events.

A 40-member Auxiliary Police Force, commanded by Auxiliary Police Commissioner Joshua Sunquist and Capt. Edward Oliva, assists the LBPD. Each member attends a training course every Wednesday, for 26 weeks. These officers routinely patrol our city six-nights a week during the off-season, and every night during the summer as extra eyes and ears of the LBPD. They also provide traffic control at all our fires, car accidents, races, parades and special events freeing up sworn police officers for more important police duties.

The summer brings an additional army of 25 Summer Special Officers that patrol in and around our beach park enforcing quality of life issues. We recruit these men and women from area colleges. They are all criminal justice majors looking for a career in law enforcement. They are very dedicated and responsible individuals.

The LBPD is happy to serve the City of Long Beach, and will do everything in its power to make your time in Long Beach trouble free.

he Long Beach Police Department is one of finest law enforcement agencies in Nassau County.

The department is headed by Commissioner Michael Tangney, a 34-year veteran of the Long Beach Police Department. he Long Beach Medical Center has been serving the health care needs of Long Beach Island and its surrounding communities since 1922.

Founded as a beachside emergency first aid station, today's medical center includes a 162-bed hospital, a 200-bed skilled nursing facility, a certified home health care agency, eight Centers of Excellence and numerous outpatient programs.

Accredited by The Joint Commission, it offers state-of-theart Emergency Department care and a full range of medical and surgical services including inpatient and ambulatory surgery, ICU/CCU, physical medicine and rehabilitation, geriatric care, behavioral health services, a family care clinic for individuals with limited financial resources, fitness and community education programs.

The Medical Center is a teaching affiliate of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine with residency training programs in Family Practice and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, as well as a fellowship program in Geriatric Medicine.

Our services and programs include: ALLIANCE FOR BREAST HEALTH 897-1344 Community members and hospital staff who have joined together to raise awareness about breast health services available in Long Beach and to raise funds to acquire digital mammography equipment at Long Beach Medical Center.

ARTHRITIS & OSTEOPOROSIS CENTER 897-2295 A comprehensive center that offers diagnostic, treatment and pain management options for those suffering with arthritis, including gout, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, tendonitis, Sjogren’s syndrome, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and lupus.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES The Medical Center offers a variety of services for persons with mental health, alcohol or substance abuse problems.

These include a 24-bed psychiatric unit, 16-bed detox service, and three outpatient treatment programs:

Long Beach Medical Center is the lead organization in the Long Beach Coalition to Prevent Underage Drinking, which was formed in 2000 to address the prevalence of underage drinking among youth on Long Beach Island. Utilizing a scientifically-based environmental protection model, it advocates increased enforcement efforts; limiting access to alcohol and other drugs and; community education to bring about changes in attitudes regarding underage drinking. The coalition is composed of a broad-based group of community organizations and meets monthly to discuss different means to address the problem from multiple fronts, with the recognition that underage drinking is fundamentally an adult problem.

Cullen Rehabilitation Unit, sub-acute (short-term) rehabilitation at The Komanoff Center for Geriatric & Rehabilitative Medicine, and outpatient physical, occupational and speech/language programs. The rehabilitation team includes physiatrists, neurologists, rehabilitation nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, social workers, nutritionists, and movement and activities therapists. The Fitwell Club is a health club offering realistic exercise programs for individuals of all ages, complete with certified personal trainers, Cybex/Eagle equipment and aerobic classes.

EMERGENCY CARE 897-1100 The hospital's modern Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to meet the needs of area residents. It is a designated Stroke Center, meeting all the NYS Department of Health requirements to provide the latest stroke interventions. All Emergency Department physicians are Board Certified in Emergency Medicine to provide the highest level of emergency care possible.

SHORT-TERM AND SKILLED NURSING FACILITY 897-1110 The 200-bed Komanoff Center for Geriatric and Rehabilitation Medicine provides short-term rehabilitation, subacute care, chronic disease management, IV therapies, long-term, skilled care and hospice care. The facility is proud of its TJC accreditation and certification from the New York State Department of Health.

FAMILY CARE CENTER 897-1350 The Family Care Center clinic provides primary and specialty medical care to individuals with limited financial resources. Specific clinics include: pediatric, adolescent, immunization, prenatal, gynecology, adult medical, cardiology, infectious diseases, rheumatology, general surgery, dermatology, vascular, gastrointestinal, podiatry, nutritional counseling and social work services. Fees are based on a sliding scale and assistance is available for enrollment in many low-cost insurance programs. Bilingual staff is available.

SURGICAL CARE The Medical Center's modern operating suites are equipped to support video-assisted laparoscopic, endoscopic and laser technology. Surgical specialties represented on the medical staff include general surgery, orthopedics, vascular, thoracic, plastic, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, maxillofacial, urology, podiatry, dentistry and neurosurgery. The surgical caseload ranges from ambulatory surgery to major, in-patient surgical procedures. A Pain Management Program that addresses acute, post-surgical pain and chronic pain conditions supports surgical services.

HOME HEALTH CARE AGENCY 897-1300 Since 1982, the Medical Center's Home Health Care Agency has been providing nursing and other supportive services to individuals who require home-based care. Home Care staff work with each patient's physician to ensure that services are provided in a coordinated fashion. The Shoppers Special bus, which is wheelchair accessible, makes it more convenient for seniors to get to the Magnolia Senior Center, the Recreation Center, the City’s shopping districts and the East End of town. This bus line runs on weekdays, except for holidays, making stops similar to the West End and the East Loop buses. However, additional stops are made at the Magnolia Senior Center, Jewish Association for Services for the Aged (JASA) and local supermarkets.

Long Beach PARA Transit Service is available to people unable to use the city’s bus system. This wheelchair liftequipped, curb to curb service will provide transportation for medical appointments and social activities within Long Beach, Lido and Point Lookout. LONG BEACH ADVISORY BOARD FOR SENIORS 650 Magnolia Blvd., Long Beach (516) 431-3510 This appointed nine-member board, created by an ordinance in 1983, advises the city manager and the City Council on policy and program development to meet the needs of Long Beach residents age 60 and over. The board assists senior citizens with obtaining information about local resources and resolves senior citizen concerns where possible. L.I.F.E. (LIFESAVING INFORMATION FOR EMERGENCIES) PROGRAM The L.I.F.E. Program makes vital medical information immediately available to rescue and health personnel in emergencies in your home. SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE

I

t seems hard to believe that I have nearly completed my first year as Superintendent of Schools.

As a parent of two children who have successfully graduated from Long Beach High School, I was already aware of the exceptional programs offered by this district. I was also acquainted with many of the dedicated staff members who work so hard each day to make these programs successful. Now that I have an insider’s view of the workings of this district, I have an even deeper appreciation for all the people and programs that make it so special.

Our school district enrolls 4,000 children from pre-K to grade 12 and stretches from Point Lookout and Lido Beach in the east through Long Beach and East Atlantic Beach in the west. We also are pleased to welcome a growing number of high school students from the Island Park schools.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma program, introduced in the 2010-11 school year, will graduate its first class of IB Diploma candidates in June. This internationally recognized program prepares students to meet the demands of college while motivating them to become thoughtful, caring and active citizens. At the same time, the high school continues to offer Advanced Placement (AP) and college-level courses, which are open to any student wishing to rise to the challenge. Enrollment in these college readiness programs have more than doubled over the past five years, while at the same time performance continues to improve.

At our middle school, we have begun the exploratory phase of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years program, which stresses student inquiry in areas including community and service, health and social education, environment and human ingenuity. If we decide to move ahead, this would be a school-wide program. The middle school also offers the Activities Promoting Thinking (APT) enrichment program for sixth and seventh graders. In addition, the MATHCOUNTS program was introduced this year to give sixth and seventh graders

who excel in math the opportunity to explore mathematical concepts beyond their grade level. Our goal is to ensure that student preparation for college and career readiness gets an early start.

This year the district has introduced a grade 3-5 pilot-program called David Weiss SPIRIT, which stands for Specialized Program Integrating Research, IB Principles and 21st Century Technology.

Additionally, the Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools (FLES) program provides all elementary students (K-5) with foreign language instruction that excites them about the joy of learning a second language and encourages them to continue their foreign language instruction in Spanish, French or Italian at the middle and high school levels. The Learning Activities to Raise Creativity (LARC) program for gifted and talented students provides weekly enrichment activities to enhance critical thinking, problem solving and creativity.

Long Beach also offers a pre-kindergarten program that supports the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of our youngest learners as we prepare them for kindergarten.

The success of these programs is evident as our students continue to excel as scholars, athletes, fine and performing artists and humanitarians, earning recognition at the regional, national and international levels for their accomplishments.

Thanks to the community’s support of a comprehensive School Preservation Plan approved in May 2009, all of our buildings are in the process of receiving improvements that will enhance safety, support instructional services and improve efficiency.

As the school year comes to a close, I look forward to continuing to work closely with teachers, administrators, parents and concerned community members to give our students every opportunity to develop all the skills they will need to be college and career-ready.

ince its establishment in 1928, the Long Beach Public Library has provided a wide range of programs and services to the community, with the purpose of bringing people together to learn, to grow and to be inspired.

With a main building and two branches, the Library serves the Long Beach City School District, which includes the City of Long Beach, Lido Beach, East Atlantic Beach and Point Lookout.

A five-person Board of Trustees governs the library and usually meets on the third Wednesday of each month. Board agendas, minutes and the Director's Report are posted online at www.longbeachlibrary.org the Monday before the meeting.

Trustees are elected at-large and serve a five-year term, with one Trustee elected each year at the annual school and library board election. The current trustees are Carol Arnone, Kathleen Dwyer, Paula Freund, Ira Grushack and Warren Vegh.

The main building is located at 111 West Park Ave. Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.: Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., from mid/late September to mid-June. The phone number is 432-7201.

The Point Lookout branch is at 26B Lido Blvd. (call 432-3409 for hours and information); and the West End Branch is located at 810 W. Beech St. (call 432-2704 for hours and information). All buildings are accessible to the physically challenged. The library is open more than 340 days per year, including five holidays: Columbus Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Presidents Day. Library cards can be obtained at any one of the three libraries with proof of residency. In addition, people who own property, a business or work in Long Beach but are not district residents are eligible for a card. Parents or guardians can register children 12 or younger for access to all collections.

Books may be taken, returned or replaced for others to read. The display also has program fliers describing library events.

The main building is a WiFi hotspot and has a technology center, quiet study, tutoring room, art gallery, program room and a 175-seat auditorium that can be divided into three separate sections for simultaneous events.

As a focal point for the community, the main building hosts many organizations’ meetings and provides exhibit space in the second floor art gallery. Exhibits, coordinated by the Long Beach Art League, change monthly. In the West End branch, there is also a mini-gallery whose exhibits are coordinated by West End Arts Group.

The library has an up-to-date collection of fiction and non-fiction books, recorded books, electronic databases, compact discs, films and magazines for users of all ages.

There are 17 public access computers with Internet access for adults. All have WinWay resume writing software and Power Point. Databases are available every day and every hour.

One electronic service, Live Homework Help, offers tutoring assistance in English, math, science and social studies to students in grades K-college. This service also provides assistance with resumes and job searching. The online catalog connects 52 public libraries in Nassau County, provides the shelf status of all materials and enables users to renew and reserve items online. The automated system also enables patrons to pay overdue fines and lost items in excess of five dollars with a Master or Visa credit card. The Youth Services Department has a collection of test-prep books for Advanced Placement, Regents and college entrance exams and high school textbooks for use within the Library.

Local newspapers from 1928 are on microfilm. Consisting of old photographs and newspaper clippings, the Long Beach local history collection is housed in the main branch.

Other noteworthy services are downloadable e-books and recorded books and museum passes. Downloadable books can be accessed from home through the library’s homepage www.longbeachlibrary.org.

Click on the download audio & ebooks icon in the upper left corner of the homepage. Recorded books are downloaded to your home computer where they reside until the circulation period is reached and then they are automatically returned.

Ebooks can be transferred to a variety of devices including Apple iPads and iPhones, MP3 players, Kindles, Sony Readers and Nooks. Museum passes circulate to library patrons for three days at no charge and permit free admission to several institutions including the Cradle of Aviation Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, the Long Island Children’s Museum, the Nassau County Museum of Art and Old Westbury Gardens. In cooperation with Nassau Community College, the Library offers college courses for credit. Registration is through the college.

FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS Our “Family Place” certified Youth Services Department offers more than just books, films and sound recordings to the children, teens and parents of Long Beach.

The library provides teens, tweens and children a number of programs such as; story times for children from 4 months in age to third grade, bilingual story time sessions for children from 3 to 6 years of age, winter and summer reading club, a number of monthly book discussions by grade level up to 9th grade, special presentations, teen advisory board, teen drawing club, arts and crafts for all ages.

The department also offers Wii gaming. In addition to programming, the Youth Services Department offers computer access (contingent upon parental consent) via netbooks and one laptop, and eight desktops. We provide parents with an extensive collection of parenting materials, such as Tummy Time programs and “Born to Read” bags for those with newborn children. The department also has a special collection of Spanish materials augmented by the Long Beach School District.

LIBRARY PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS The library is known for its wonderful, multi-cultural programs, including the September Jazz, February Folk-2Funk, May Cabaret, July Barrier Beach Blues and, new this year, the October Long Beach Roxx Festivals. Live theatrical performances, programs for singles, discussions of current issues, feature films, workshops for job seekers, book discussion series and an extensive, varied concert series are also presented. The library’s auditorium has a sound-enhancing system for the hearing impaired. Users who need this system should give the library one-day's notice. Excepting August, a monthly newsletter, “Channels,” describing library events and services, is emailed free to interested patrons.

FOR THE HOMEBOUND AND SENIOR CITIZENS The library will deliver recorded books with players and large or regular-type books to medically eligible patrons. Many programs are of particular interest to seniors, including free blood-pressure screening, computer, defensive driving, caregiver and fitness classes, free tax assistance and an annual information and assistance fair.

THE HOLOCAUST LIBRARY The Holocaust Library, established in November 1990, is the first of its kind on Long Island. It is co-sponsored by the Long Beach Public Library and the Holocaust Memorial Committee of Long Island. The Long Beach Holocaust Library has books and videotapes. It was originally funded by a New York State grant and continues to be supported by the Holocaust Committee.

LICENSED SCHOOL-AGED CHILD CARE PROGRAMS Parents who require before school & after school care may drop off their children at Early Morning programs which start at 7AM. Our programs are located at the West End Community Center and Lido Elementary. Our After-School programs start at the end of the school day and

SANITATION AND RECYCLING HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE Household garbage (including metal items) is picked up on Mondays and Thursdays, for the East End; Tuesdays and Fridays for the West End. Household Hazardous Waste: household batteries should be brought to the Sanitation Department.

Battery containers are no longer collected at the ďŹ re department. Drop off at Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (S.T.O.P.) program. All of the household materials should be disposed of at the S.T.O.P. program. Call for locations 516-378-2200.

BULK GARBAGE Place bulk garbage, such as sofas, tables, mattresses, etc. curbside the same day as your regular trash. East End pickup is Thursdays, Fridays for the West End. Four items per pickup.

Wood must not exceed 4 feet and must be tied in bundles weighing less than 40 lbs. The city will not pick up automotive or boat batteries, auto tires, nor any construction materials or debris. Please make certain that any home improvement contractor you hire agrees to dispose of debris.

SCRAP METAL AND APPLIANCES East End pickup Monday and Thursday. West End pickup Tuesday and Friday.

Please place metal items curbside. No appointment necessary. Items include washers, dryers, stoves, bikes, refrigerators, metal pipes (not to exceed 4 feet). Remove doors from all appliances.

RECYCLING Citywide recycling pickup is Wednesday. Do not recycle foam packaging.

An estimated 6,000 participants and 15,000 spectators turned out for the 13th annual Long Beach Polar Bear Splash on Feb. 5, which raised money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Area of City - Five square miles.

Population - The city’s year-round population is approximately 33,275; During the summer months, the population swells to 50,000.

Climate - In the summer, the island is consistently 12-13 degrees cooler than Manhattan and in the winter, it is usually about 10 degrees warmer than the Big Apple.

Government - Five-member City Council; the appointed City Manager is the chief administrator; the barrier island is also part of Nassau County, which is governed by a 19-member elected legislature and an elected County Executive; The city, Atlantic Beach, East Atlantic Beach, Point Lookout and Lido Beach are in Legislative District Four. The unincorporated areas of the island are under the jurisdiction of Hempstead Town, which is governed by an elected council and a supervisor.

Elevation - Sea level

Beach - Long Beach boasts five miles of the finest, cleanest sand and safest bathing in the northeast. There is a fee from Memorial Day to Labor Day (see fee schedule on page 38).

There are also town and county beach parks in Lido Beach and Point Lookout. Admission is free, but there is a per-car parking charge.

The beach park in East Atlantic Beach is for residents only.

Hospital - Long Beach Medical Center is a comprehensive facility offering emergency services with a stroke center designation, acute inpatient hospital care, a certified home health care agency and renowned rehabilitation and behavorial health services. It also maintains a top-notch nursing home.

Boardwalk - There’s a 2.1-mile boardwalk along the ocean that is well-lit in the evening and regularly patrolled by the Long Beach Police Department. There is also a promenade on the bay near the Recreation Center.

Houses of Worship - Long Beach is home to nearly two dozen

Police/Fire Protection - The Long Beach Fire Department has three stations. The Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department is primarily responsible for the eastern portion of the barrier island.

The city is protected by its own police force, assisted at times by the Nassau County Police Department, which patrols and protects East Atlantic Beach, Lido and Point Lookout.

Utilities - The city is served by the Long Island Power Authority, Cablevision and Verizon.

Transportation - Twenty minutes from JFK International Airport, Long Beach has a Long Island Rail Road station, maintains its own local bus service and is also on the county MSBA line. There are taxis whose in-city rates are regulated by the city council.

NASSAU COUNTY Long Beach became a city in 1922, but it is also a part of Nassau County and certain county services and facilities are available to Long Beach residents. In fact, barrier island residents who live outside the city limits — in East Atlantic Beach to the west and Lido Beach and Point Lookout to the east — depend on them.

Nassau is governed by an elected Legislature that was formed in January 1996. It replaced the Board of Supervisors, which was ruled unconstitutional because of its weighted voting system. The Legislature’s 19 districts enable constituents to have greater access to their elected representatives. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters.

The legislature also enables residents to submit petitions for proposed new laws that legislators are obligated to consider.

The legislators serve two-year terms. The Fourth District includes the City of Long Beach, Atlantic Beach, East Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach and Point Lookout.

The county executive — currently Edward Mangano — serves a four-year term and is the chief administrator.

TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD The Town of Hempstead is the largest township in the United States with over 142 square miles, a population of approximately 725,000, 34 unincorporated areas, 22 incorporated villages, over 65 parks and marinas and 2,500 miles of city, county and state roads.

In 1643, two Englishmen, John Carman and the Reverend Robert Fordham, traveled from Connecticut across the Long Island Sound to Long Island. They represented a group of settlers who wished to purchase from the Indians (the Reuckowacky, the Merockes, the Matinecock, and the Massapequas), the current Towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead. In 1644, the Town of Hempstead was founded when a patent was obtained from William Kieft, the Dutch Governor of New Amsterdam.

The name Hempstead seems to derive from Hemel-Hempstead in Great Britain, which means town spot.

Hempstead grew steadily in the 1800s and by 1855 it was the most populous town in Queens County with just under 10,500 people. The town, along with the rest of Long Island, supplied the greater metropolitan area with a multitude of farm products and provided abundant recreational opportunities including seashore resorts, fox hunting, polo and horse racing.

The population peaked at just over 800,000 in 1970, and is now levelled at approximately 725,000.

Today, on the Long Beach barrier island, the Town of Hempstead encompasses Point Lookout and Lido Beach to the east and East Atlantic Beach and Atlantic Beach to the west.

The Town maintains two marinas in Point Lookout as well as several beach parks.

Hempstead Town has seven elected board members. The Supervisor, Kate Murray, serves a two-year term. The six council members serve four years each.

stablished in 1976, the Long Beach Humane Society is a non-profit, volunteer organization. The LBHS exists solely to champion the ethical and humane treatment of the most unfortunate and neglected animals that are rescued.

The group has been able to survive and continue its 33-year mission only through the generous public contributions that help fund and support its life-saving work.

The humane society, which is a separate and independent entity from the Long Beach Animal Shelter, formed a rescue and adoption center, nicknamed "Kitty Cove" in May 2005.

Kitty Cove is open to the public 7 days a week and located within the Pet Supplies Plus at 3644 Long Beach Road in Oceanside. With the help of the public, they were able to find homes for more than 500 cats in 2008, nearly a 17 percent

increase over the prior year.

In addition to managing its Kitty Cove adoption center and cat/kitten foster care program, the Humane Society provides referrals for people inquiring about trap, neuter and return (TNR), low cost spay/neuter options, where to report animal cruelty and abuse and how to help control the feral cat population plaguing Nassau County.

In recent years, the society has worked in conjunction with charities such as Maddie’s Fund Pet Rescue Project, Purina Pet for Seniors, as well as North Shore Animal League. Each month, North Shore Animal League brings its mobile van to the Kitty Cove adoption center to help puppies find a loving home in the community.

R

escue Ink Inc. — the non-profit animal rescue organization best known for its reality series on the National Geographic Channel, “Rescue Ink: Unleashed” — took over the city’s long-vacant Long Beach Animal Shelter last year.

The members of Rescue Ink — a tough, tattooed bunch who, in addition to the series “Rescue Ink: Unleashed,” were featured in a self-titled book in 2009 — founded the group six years ago. Its volunteers include police officers, former military personnel and private investigators that look into cases of animal abuse in the tri-state area and around the world. The facility is described as “a safe haven for all the animals.”

The City Council unanimously approved a one-year contract with Rescue Ink to launch a pilot program, aimed at reopening the local shelter, at 770 Park Place, to treat lost, stray or abused animals found by the city’s animal control

Rescue Ink works closely with the Long Beach Police Department, the ASPCA and animal control officers, among others, conducts home checks when animals are adopted and investigates tips about abused animals.
