living in Malverne The Village of Malverne is ideally situated, 45 minutes from the heart of New York City, and within 15 minutes of some of the world’s most beautiful white sand beaches. We also enjoy the temperate Long Island climate — warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer than nearby cities and suburbs Malverne is widely known for its charming, small-town appeal with lovely residential homes, quaint downtown shops and restaurants as well as our beautiful recreational parks and facilities. The village also has many landmarks, beloved by locals and visitors alike. Among these include Crossroads Farm at Grossmann’s, the closest organic farm to New York City. The farm is made up of five acres of land and hosts events throughout the year. Others include the Malverne Historical House, which preserves and displays Malverne’s history through the decades. Noteworthy village events include the Holiday Lighting, which draws admirers from throughout the metropolitan area who delight in the Malverne’s transformation into a holiday showplace, complete with an elf parade, photos with Santa, dance performances, horse-and-carriage rides through the village and more. The event has been enchanting crowds since its inception in the 1960s. Malverne’s Memorial Day Parade is another major village event, where dozens of organizations march through the village’s streets in

West Hempstead is a Nassau County hamlet rich with history, parks, numerous public transportation options and other amenities that have been drawing residents and businesses to the area for years. The hamlet has several business districts, including Hempstead Avenue, Woodfield Road and Hempstead Turnpike, all of which offer a mosaic of different restaurants, convenience stores and more that reflect the diverse needs and interests of residents. The area has a strong Orthodox Jewish community, as well as many residents from Western Europe and other areas across the globe. One of the hamlet’s many gems is Hall’s Pond Park, the county’s 11-acre retreat at the corner of Nassau Boulevard and Hempstead Avenue. The park includes a duck pond, playground and walking paths, which attract children and adults, and is a gathering place for events hosted by the West Hempstead Community Support Association, the West Hempstead Lions Club, the Police Athletic League and many more. The park is also home to the hamlet’s newly installed 9/11 Memorial, which was dedicated in July. Hempstead Lake State Park is another hamlet treasure, with tennis and basketball courts, horse trails, fishing ponds, a new playground and a carousel, which just celebrated its 100th anniversary. Echo Park, which offers indoor and outdoor pools, a diving pool, saunas and a fitness center, is located on Nassau Boulevard and is open to town residents. Welcome to Public and Parocial Schools in Malverne and Beyond

onsisting of a primary school, intermediate C school, middle school and high school, the Mal-

verne Union Free School District has set stringent goals since it began as a single schoolhouse more than 160 years ago. Since then, Malverne has seen its school district grow in every respect. High educational quality is a hallmark of the elementary schools. Small class sizes, with a student-to-teacher ratio of about 20 to 1, ensure that all children receive the attention they deserve. At the Howard. T. Herber Middle School, there are diverse programs, including a full roster of clubs so youngsters have an opportunity to explore

Malverne Schools various interests. The academic schedule is progressively individualized from the middle school to the high school, making the transition smooth. Malverne High School is one of the most effective secondary schools in the country and was recently named a School of Opportunity Gold Award recipient by the National Education Policy Center. A strong academic emphasis is complemented by a comprehensive career awareness program, so graduates are ready to make wise choices about their future lives. Since its birth, the district’s goal has been the total success of all children, where students, educators and parents can collaborate to provide for the education of children as independent, lifelong learners.

Malverne High School seniors celebrated their graduation on the school’s football field in June 2017.

dedicated to the success of each student based on the highest standards of excellence in education. Each student will be challenged to achieve mastery in all subject areas in an educational atmosphere that strives to build positive self-esteem, mutual respect for others and a life-long quest for learning. The legal name of this school district is the West Hempstead Union Free School District. The boundaries of the district have been set under state law. The State Education Department maintains a close check on standards and what has become state law through mandates of the State Legislature. The state allows a local Board of Education to set whatever additional policies may be deemed necessary for the proper function of the district’s schools. The board comprises seven public-spirited citizens who maintain homes within the district and who serve without financial compensation in the best interests of their community. Town of hempsTead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Anthony Santino — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. towN of Hempstead
