PUBLISHER A letter from the

We are pleased to present our annual Living In Oceanside and Island Park, a special supplement to the Oceanside/Island Park Herald.

Those of us who live here know Oceanside and Island Park are wonderful, diverse places. Our annual guide is a testament to these dynamic communities. Not only does it include vital information about Oceanside and Island Park, but it also gives you a look at some of the people and places that represent the best of these communities.

Think of Living In Oceanside and Island Park as an “owner’s manual” for newcomers and longtime residents alike. As you’ll see in these pages, there’s an amazingly rich social fabric here.

Those of us who call these communities home know that they are brimming with history and unique “hidden gems.” While some, if not all, of the “gems” are known to Oceanside and Island Park residents, it is the stories behind the businesses, a civic institution and organizations, which might not be familiar to everyone.

Emile’s Candies, our cover story, is a sweet tale of an Oceanside business that began in 1953 and has survived through multiple changes in ownership, but remains a top-tier chocolatier on the South Shore.

For 100 years, the Island Park Fire Department has served its community and played an instrumental role in shaping civic leaders as evidenced by the path of its 75th chief, Anthony D’Esposito, who carried out a career with the NYPD, became a Town of Hempstead councilman and now serves in the House of Representatives.

The Oceanside Garden Club has spent eight decades serving as environmental stewards and beautifying the community as the volunteers plant trees in its home neighborhood and surrounding communities.

Reeling in customers since 1956, Ralph's Tackle & Sporting Goods in Island Park rebounded after Hurricane Sandy, as did its home community.

Kitty Cove sounds like a hideaway. The Island Park haven for cats, also known as the Long Beach Humane Society, is the place for rescued felines to be nursed back to health and then placed in their forever home.

Located behind Peter’s Clam Bar in Island Park, the Hempstead Bay Sailing Club began 63 years ago along Middle Bay Country Club in Oceanside. Boasting a membership of nearly 60 members, the sailing club welcomes newcomers and veteran sailors.

Living In Oceanside and Island Park is published in cooperation with the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce. We are honored to mark another year as the chamber’s official publication.

We hope that you find this issue useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Oceanside/Island Park Herald 52 weeks per year.

Island Park: A small village with a big heart

The Village of Island Park continues its renaissance with new local business, infrastructure upgrades and smart growth!

The Board and I are so excited for all we have planned in the coming year! Masone Beach continues to see record attendance, with so many of our young neighbors participating in programs throughout the week. The summer is a great time to shop local, eat at one of our great restaurants and catch a concert — with our main firework event at the end of the season. In addition, we look forward to our holiday events — including Easter, Hanukkah and Christmas.

est — men and women who work 24/7/365 to keep 11558 safe. This year, the Island Park Fire Department is celebrating 100 years of dedicated service to our beautiful Village. They have much planned to celebrate their first century and I look forward to joining them and all of you to show our love and gratitude.

The Village of Island Park may be small, but it has a big heart and we've battled through hurricanes, tropical storms, flooding, pandemic and more. Together we have always come out better and stronger. I want to thank our Village workforce for moving our community forward each day.

As you probably realize, our community has been the focal point of many resiliency improvement and infrastructure projects — collaborating with partners in government to create a more sustainable Island Park. Emile's Candies: A sweet legacy continues in Oceanside

In its 71st year, Emile's Candies stands as a testament to the rich tradition of old-fashioned chocolate craftsmanship. The Oceanside chocolatier has been delighting locals and visitors alike since its founding in 1953 by Emile Wagenknecht, a German confectioner. With a longstanding commitment to quality and tradition, Emile's Candies remains one of the last classic chocolate-making operations on Long Island.

The store's decades-long journey has been marked by familial dedication and a passion for preserving heritage. Emile Wagenknecht's son Robert took the reins in 1965, followed by Patrick Quinn, a high school student hired in 1980, who eventually became the owner in 1994. Throughout it all, Emile's Candies stayed true to its roots, continuing to craft chocolates in small batches using original machinery and time-honored recipes.

In 2017, a new chapter unfolded when the store was put up

for sale. Jackie Brown and co-owner Michael Brown (no relation) assumed ownership of Emile's Candies. Jackie, a Baldwin resident, had been patronizing Emile’s since she was a young girl and when the chance arose to own the store, which created so many childhood memories, she jumped at the opportunity.

Their commitment to upholding its legacy while embracing modern innovations has revitalized the beloved institution. Jackie, with her deep connection to the Oceanside community, brings her special

blend of skills to the business.

Brian Rardin, MIchael's husband, who also works at the store, shares that same passion. Their dedication to maintaining quality while adapting to the current environment is evident in their approach. From modernizing equipment to expanding the store's social media prescence, Jackie and Michael are ensuring that Emile's Candies remains a cherished destination. With a focus on community engagement and customer satisfaction, they continue to serve as ambassadors of Long Island's confectionery heritage.

"People come here as a tradition," Jackie said. "My mother, who grew up in Oceanside, came here. I came here as a kid and now ended up owning it. Our challenge now is expanding outside Oceanside."

Jackie Brown welcomes everyone to Emile’s Candies for some delectable goodies, holiday season and year-round.

She envisions expanding Emile's Candies beyond its current location, potentially opening pop-up shops or additional outlets while retaining the essence of the original store. Emile's is poised to embark on its next — delectable — chapter in its storied history, ensuring that its sweet legacy endures for generations to come.

Emile’s Candies is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours during holidays. Check the website, EmilesCandies.com, or call (516) 766-4402.

Wendy Bermudes and Jackie’s sister-in law Barbara Brown are among the dedicated workers that make Emile's Candies one of the sweetest places around.

There are many tempting delights to choose from at Emile's.

Island Park Fire Department:

A Century of Heroism and Community Spirit

A100 years is a long time and with the 100 years comes a lot of tradition and history. The fire service here in Island Park is almost 100 percent volunteer. People just leave their homes in the middle of the night or on holidays, to help their neighbors.

s the Island Park Fire Department commemorates its 100th anniversary, reflections on a century of service are intertwined with its milestone celebration.

Ed Madden, who joined the department as a high school student in 1976, reminisces about significant events that marked the department's history. One such event was the tragic explosion that year (1976) of sewage storage tanks across Pearsalls Hassock, west of Island Park, which claimed the life of a teenager and spurred the department into action. The aftermath saw more than a million gallons of sludge inundate numerous beaches, prompting the closure of

63 beaches in the area, including Long Beach and Atlantic Beach.

Madden, now 65 and a former fire department chief, recalls the tight-knit camaraderie among members, united by a sense of duty and community service. High-speed car accidents on Austin Boulevard served as reminders of the importance of their roles, particularly for younger members.

“You have everybody from every step of life, who joined and no matter what they did, everybody got along and did what we had to do to protect the community,” Madden said.

The department's legacy is ingrained in the fabric of the Island Park community, as emphasized by Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, who served as the 75th chief of the department. He reflected on the profound impact the firehouse has had on his life, from his early days as an 18-year-old recruit to assuming the mantle of Chief.

“Being a member of Congress, being a councilman, being part of the NYPD as a detective, taking the oath as Chief of the Island Park Fire Department was a day that I'll never forget,” he said.“It's a day that I'm proud of because you truly earn that rank and you earn the respect of not only your colleagues in Island Park, but throughout Long Island and throughout Nassau County.”

Throughout its history, the Island Park Fire Department has weathered challenges of recruitment and retention, common among volunteer fire departments. Innovative programs have been instrumental in attracting and retaining members.

The department's pivotal role during Hurricane Sandy is a testament to its importance

here. In the aftermath of the disaster, the firehouse served as a vital hub for emergency response, shelter, and support services, underscoring its indispensable role in times of crisis.

The centennial celebration, which culminated in the Second Battalion parade on Aug. 11, was a momentous occasion for reflection and recognition of the department's enduring contributions to the community. As preparations for the festivities unfolded, members had a palpable sense of anticipation and pride; the occasion was an opportunity to honor the legacy of those who have gone before them while reaffirming their commitment to serving their neighbors with dedication and compassion.

“100 years is a long time and with the 100 years comes a lot of tradition and a lot of history, " D'Esposito said.“The fire service here in Island Park is almost 100 percent volunteer. People just leave their houses in the middle of the night or on holidays, to help their neighbors. I think that that tells the story — many people from all walks of life. You see people who join the fire service who are career firefighters, cops, those who work for a municipal government, lawyers, accoun-

tants, doctors, and everything in between. You have people who join who are stay-at-home moms who want to do something for their community and serve and I think that that epitomizes what the volunteer fire service is all about. Coming together to do right by the community and Island Park has done a great job of that.”

Island Park Fire Department Chief Eric Gorton and Assistant Chief Michal Denis lead the department.
Firefighter Logan Dexter, Captain Ricky Holodar and Lieutenant Michael Spinan are at the helm, ready as needed.

The enduring legacy of Ralph's

and Goods

FFor over six decades, Ralph's Tackle & Sporting Goods has been a cornerstone of the Island Park community, serving generations of fishing enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers.

or over six decades, Ralph's Tackle & Sporting Goods has been a cornerstone of the Island Park community, serving generations of fishing enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers. Established in 1956, which makes it the second oldest business in Island Park, the store is now owned by Glenn Meyers.

Born and raised in Harbor Isle, Glenn has been immersed in the fishing and sporting goods industry practically his entire life. His father, Anthony Meyers, acquired the business from the original owner, Ralph Levy, in the 1960s. Growing up around the store, Meyers began working there at the young age of 13, eventually taking over

the business himself. Meyers, now 62, was practically born into the business.

Despite the changing tides of fishing industry regulations and economic challenges, Glenn remains committed to the store and its patrons. With his thorough knowledge of fishing gear, coupled with a genuine passion for the outdoors, he's a trusted advisor to everyone seeking the perfect tackle or advice on the best fishing spots in the area.

Ralph's Tackle & Sporting Goods has weathered its fair share of storms, both figuratively and literally. Hurricane Sandy's devastation in 2012 dealt a significant blow to the store and the surrounding community. Beyond its role as a purveyor of outdoor equipment, Ralph's Tackle gives its fair share back to the community, sponsoring the Island Park Little League.

As a small business owner, Meyers understands the importance of adaptation and perseverance in navigating economic challenges. As Ralph's Tackle & Sporting Goods celebrates over six decades of service, Meyers, who now lives in Baldwin, said he would like the legacy to continue. Meyer's family includes his wife Joyce and their four children, all in their 30s. While all his children are avid anglers, he advised his kids against entering the business, concermed about the effort involved in successfully operating the store.

“My greatest gift are my kids,” Meyers said. “My kids are so good. I love my kids. I told all my kids to get a real job where they don't have to work 100 plus hours a week."

With Meyers at the helm, Ralph's Tackle & Sporting Goods continues to stand as a symbol for the fishing community in Island Park.

Island Park’s second oldest business gives locals a reliable spot for their aquatic activities.

One of the pillars supporting Kitty Cove's mission is the generosity of its donors. The Long Beach Humane Society raised over $10,000 during this year's Bowling for Kitties event (in February), which was then matched by two separate generous donors raising the total to over $30,000. The substantial donation has provided a crucial lifeline, en-

abling Kitty Cove to continue its operations and expand services despite financial challenges.

Kitty Cove receives support from various sources, including residents and businesses; the organization's active presence on social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram has helped raise awareness and attract volunteers and donors.

Among those volunteers, Annie Melia, who resides in Rockville Centre, has been dedicated to assisting the organization for 12 years.

"Once you've had a pet through here, you feel so connected," said Melia, who welcomed three cats from the shelter. "When people hear we're in a crisis of funding and might not be able to house animals, that's when they really step up."

Kitty Cove's calendar is brimming with events designed to raise funds and promote adoptions. From drag queen bingo nights to themed fundraisers such as "Whiskers & Wine," each is meticulously planned and executed by the dedicated team and volunteers. These events not only generate muchneeded funds but also serve as opportunities to find loving homes for the cats in their care.

said. "That's a little bit unique compared to some of the other shelters. A lot are at capacity and doing their best but the setup here is definitely unique."

One of Kitty Cove's top priorities is finding suitable placements for their feline residents. The adoption process is thorough, including vet checks, home inspections and landlord approvals. While some applicants may be disappointed if their application is denied, Kitty Cove remains committed to ensuring that each cat finds the perfect forever home.

Beyond the daily operations, the team at Kitty Cove shares a deep sense of camaraderie and purpose. Volunteers often describe themselves as a family, united by their love for cats and their shared mission. Despite the challenges they face, their passion for animal welfare fuels their desire to make a difference in the lives of cats and their adoptive families.

As Kitty Cove continues to expand and evolve, its commitment to providing compassionate care for cats remains unwavering. With upcoming events like the annual "Paws & Paint" fundraiser and adoption drives, the organization is poised to make an even greater impact in the community and beyond.

With over 20 volunteers, Kitty Cove operates smoothly, ensuring that the cats receive the care and attention they deserve. Volunteers work tirelessly, including morning shifts cleaning litter boxes to social media management and adoption screenings. Their dedication and passion for animal welfare are evident in every aspect of their work.

"Here they're at least able to roam freely and have a little happier normal life," Melia

Through the collective efforts of volunteers, donors, and supporters, this small shelter has transformed the lives of countless cats. Those who are interested in the organization’s updates can subscribe to its newsletter, which offers information on fundraising events, animals that are available for adoption and other updates.

Kitty Cove offers felines a place to call home.
