Years later, the Stampfels turned their mutual hobby into a career when they bought the Bellmore Movie Theater in 1986. In March 1990, they acquired the Maltese Movie Theater. During this time, the couple became involved in the Long Island International Film Expo, a showcase for independent filmmakers since its inception in 1988, developing the event and contributing to its growth. The event became so large that it outgrew the Malverne Movie Theater and the Stampfels brought it to Bellmore. The festival is a great opportunity for first-time filmmakers and actors to showcase their talents, build a following and network. Some of the festival’s films have gone on to cable or film distributors. The Expo also calls filmmakers’ attention to Long Island, encouraging them to set their movies there, resulting in economic growth.
