WANTAGH/SEAFORD GUIDE
a letter from the
publisher hello, residents! Welcome to the Wantagh Seaford Guide, a special supplement to the Seaford Herald Citizen and the Wantagh Herald Citizen. The purpose of the Guide is to expand upon what the Herald Citizens do each week: describe and celebrate these unique communities and the many services and organizations that make them so special. Those who live here know that these are wonderful places to live. In this compact book, you’ll find information about many organizations and institutions. Stuart For newcomers, the Guide provides a comprehenRichner sive look at all the communities have to offer. Longtime residents and business leaders will also find it a handy reference. We hope you enjoy the Guide. We’ve tried to make it the best handbook for Wantagh and Seaford ever published. We also hope you’ve been enjoying the expanded and improved coverage the papers have been bringing you since the old Citizen joined the Herald Community Newspaper family three years ago. This week’s paper and the Guide are being mailed to every home in the community to give you another chance to sample the outstanding coverage the Wantagh/Seaford editor and team provide 52 weeks a year. Stuart Richner Publisher
P.S. If you’re not currently receiving the Herald by mail each week, please see our ad on Page 9 for subscription information, or find us online at www.liherald.com/subscribe.

In many ways, putting out a newspaper each week is an interactive process. We need your participation to do our job, so we offer you — our readers and partners — a reminder of how and when to reach us. For news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is 10 a.m. the Friday prior to publication. Notices are printed free of charge. We also welcome the news of your family life, your business life and your social life. We accept, at no charge, obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions. We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. Letters are accepted until 5 p.m. the Friday prior to publication, and should be no more than 350 words. The Herald also offers tours of its Garden City headquarters and printing plant for schools, scouts and other community groups. in SEAFORD Great schools, awesome parks and restaurants, and the most wonderful part — a tight-knit community where everyone looks out for each other. What’s not to love about living in Seaford? “There are so many people in this town that take time from their own lives to make other people‘s lives better,” says Donna Spineli Jebaily, a resident since 1991. “I can’t say enough about the schools, I absolutely love them. The teachers, administration, support staff are all exceptional. My children are not only getting the best education possible, but they are among people who truly care about them.” Seaford is home to nearly a dozen parks, but one of the favorites is Seaman’s Neck Park, where a lot of local sports are played, you can rent row boats, use the sprinkler park and there’s a playground that many neighborhood kids grew up playing in. Washington Avenue Park is another awesome park to be able to take the little ones, as well as Estella Park over by CVS on Merrick Road and nearby Wantagh Park. Cedar Creek Park, located south of Merrick Road and east of Wantagh Avenue, is a goto spot for locals looking to enjoy a spring or summer day. It offers athletic fields, playgrounds, picnic areas and community-based activities. It is also the site of a sewage treatment plant. Seaford offers a Police Activity League for several sports for children, along with a Catholic Youth Organization and Seaford Little League baseball and softball. It is also the home of the Long Island Broncos youth football and cheer organization. “I love that our children have so many opportunities to join different types of sports, and for that I am grateful to everyone that volunteers to coach,” Jebaily says. As for the restaurants, longtime residents say they love Cara Mia, Crabby Amy’s, Bayview Tavern and the Waffle House, to name a few. Runyans is a great neighborhood gathering spot, some say. New this year is a farmers market every Saturday morning, where SeaContinued on next page

ford and Wantagh residents look forward to buying fresh produce and meeting up with each other. Seaford has its own small Cinema in town and the friendly staff has held several Seaford moms movie nights there. You have the preschools at Our Redeemer, Seaford Community and Saint William the Abbot. The community has its own train station, volunteer fire department and public library with has loads of great programs and events for adults and children. There’s also plenty to do outdoors, including hiking and marveling at live animal exhibits in the nature center at the Tackapausha
Preserve and Museum. Seaford’s main business district is along Merrick Road. There are also businesses located along Sunrise Highway, Washington Avenue and in the Seaford Harbor section. There are many active organizations -— including a Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Wellness Council, Historical Society, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Kiwanis Club — that are on a mission to give back to the community. And finally, scouting is very big in Seaford and there’s an annual “Seaford Summer Recreation Program” run by some Seaford school teachers that just completed its 14th successful year.
Seaford Band Campers practiced their routines for five straight days in August.

in Wantagh Ask residents what they love about living in Wantagh and most will undoubtedly say the close proximity to the water —the award-winning, nationally renowned Jones Beach. “I love that I am just 10 minutes from the ocean,” one longtime resident said. A close second is the entertainment at the Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater, which sits on the water and draws an eclectic group of celebrity performances every year. “We have a very engaged community with a wonderful support system of organizations that contribute to our quality of life,” said Ella Stevens, president of the Wantagh Homeowner’s Association, the 4th of July Parade Association and the Director of the Miss Wantagh pageant. “Our schools have been, and continue to be, Schools of Excellence, in which we take great pride. Our parks offer all the amenities you would find at vacation resorts. We also have local events and entertainment available in our downtown . . . and of course, our parades.” Others love the train museum which houses Wantagh’s long and rich history, the community parades, its beautiful neighborhoods, and above all the small town feel. “There’s so many friendly people,” on longtime resident says. “It’s a great place to raise a family!” Residents can enjoy a stunning bike ride along the bike path to Jones Beach, which offers 6.5 miles of white-sand beach on the Atlantic Ocean and is home to the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, the boardwalk band shell, a miniature golf course, the West Bathhouse Pool, the scenic Landing restaurant and the recently added Splash Pad Park as well as various recreational and dining facilities. nities from scenic nature walks to recreational facilities for swimming and playing sports. And, there are pools, bowling, mini golf and so much more! Wantagh is served by the Nassau County Police Department, Wantagh Fire Department and EMTs, and WantaghLevittown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. There’s a train station and an active library. Major roads include Merrick Road, Sunrise Highway, Jerusalem Avenue, Wantagh Avenue and the Wantagh State Parkway. Wantagh holds tradition close to heart with its annual ceremonies and other events such as the Easter egg hunt, holiday tree lighting, Homecoming, the John Theissen Foun-
dation Freaky 5K run, the 9/11 ceremony at the American Legion and the crowning of Miss Wantagh. Ashley Bailey is the 2018 Miss Wantagh, and her court performs community service projects. The community has several business districts, with storefronts lining Wantagh Avenue, Merrick Road, Sunrise Highway, Park and Jerusalem avenues. Wantagh is also known to have popular bars, clubs and pubs all within walking distance from the train station. A few people who moved out of the area say they return to Wantagh for their shopping, banking and post office needs, and for its local businesses like Wantagh 5 & 10 (which has everything you ever need!) One of their mottos — “there’s no place like Wantagh.”

W
antagh has been around since 1643 when Capt. John Seaman and Robert Jackson purchased 6,000 acres of land from the Indians, including the areas now known as Wantagh and Seaford. Originally, Wantagh belonged to the Merokee tribe of the Metoac Native Americans, before the Dutch and English settled in the area. Then, the Dutch petitioned to obtain everything west of Oyster Bay. The area was known as Jerusalem by the Dutch — evidenced by local roadways and namesakes of institutions that still stand today — before being named Ridgewood in the 1880s. In 1891, since “Ridgewood” was already being used by another New York town, the members of the Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church helped change the name. The original Wantagh Post Office was recreated in 1907 to replicate the original 1837 look. It currently sits across from the Wantagh Preservation Society (aka the Wantagh Museum) and the 1912 Jamaica Parlor Car at 1700 Wantagh Ave. The Wantagh Museum and Jamaica Parlor Car hold a lot of Wantagh’s historical memories today.
New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller used the Jamaica Parlor Car to campaign aboard in 1962.
The first Wantagh Preservation Society Board of Trustees meeting was held in 1969.
Henry Seaman was the first Postmaster at the Wantagh Post Office in 1868.
The Long Island Rail Road donated the 1912 Jamaica Parlor Car to the Wantagh Preservation Society in 1972.
The 1837 Wantagh Post Office replica was built in 1907.
Bob Meagher is the current president of the Wantagh Preservation Society.

T
he area known today as Seaford was originally called “Great Water Land” or “Land on the Great Cove,” by the Massapequa Native Americans who settled there. It was purchased by Capt. John Seamen in 1643 and eventually named after his hometown in England. He purchased Seaford after he fled the Plymouth, Mass., settlement in search of religious and political freedom. The first school building was built in 1830. Today, the community south of Jerusalem Avenue is served by the Seaford School District, with some children in northern Seaford attending schools in Levittown. Private schools in Seaford include Maria Regina and Saint William the Abbot, both of which are Roman Catholic. The Long Island Rail Road extended through Seaford to Babylon for the first time in 1867. The Seaford Historical Society, a former school building dedicated in 1976, holds a lot of Seaford’s history to date, such as the authentic 1910 Seaford skiff artifact and faded pictures of Seaford from many decades ago. Seaford had a population of 24,984 in 1968, during its 325th anniversary. This year, the community is celebrating its 375th anniversary, with ongoing festivities throughout the fall.
A new two-room schoolhouse was built on the southwest corner of Jackson Avenue and Waverly Avenue, with the Seaford Bell Tower a top the building.
The Seaford Historical Society has preserved the authentic Seaford skiff artifact dating back to 1910.
Charles Wroblewski is a former president of the Seaford Historical Society and current director and historian.
The 1957 Seaford Junior and Senior High School remained one until it split in two and opened Seaford Junior High School is 1965, which became Seaford Middle School in 1985.
The Long Island Rail Road extended through Seaford to Babylon in 1867.
The Seaford Historical Society was created in 1969.

antagh and Seaford have plenty to keep you busy all year long. Between its acres of parkland, beaches, bike trails, picnic and recreation areas, there’s tons of fun to be had outdoors. As many signs around the community note, Wantagh is the gateway to Jones Beach. Jones Beach State Park features 6.5 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches, renowned for their fine white sand. The Ocean Parkway, with its breathtaking views of the Atlantic, is easily accessible from the Meadowbrook and Wantagh parkways. Families and friends can swim and play in the waves under the vigilant eyes of the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps, while small children can take advantage of Zach’s Bay for calmer, shallower waters. Surfers, stand-up paddle boarders and wind-surfers can also enjoy the waves at several locations along the beach. For those seeking a quiet day of fishing, piers and bait-and-tackle shops are readily available. On the world-famous boardwalk, visitors can grab a bite at one of the many restaurants and concession stands, or have some fun playing miniature golf, shuffleboard, basketball, tennis or handball. There’s a new Splash Pad park next to the Boardwalk Cafe where visitors can snack, and cool off. There’s also bicycling on the Wantagh Parkway bike trail, which passes through Jones Beach by the Northwell Health at Jones Beach amphitheater, on the way to the Ocean Parkway bike trail. Cycling is also permitted on the Jones Beach boardwalk, except in summer. The boardwalk’s band shell offers free music, dancing and movies every week during the summer.

The Northwell Health amphitheater regularly attracts the biggest names in the music industry for its summer concert series, and has also hosted notable music festivals, including the Billboard Hot 100. Music lovers can enjoy their favorite bands in front of a breathtaking backdrop of the sun setting over one of the country’s most cherished summer getaways. The park’s Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center is another fun and educational way for children to spend the day at Jones Beach. The center offers group and guided tours for kids to feel live marine animals and plants, dig up whalebones, explore a butterfly garden and even see a shipwreck. Seaford is also home to a natural oasis: the Tackapausha Museum and Preserve. Nestled on Washington Avenue, the museum staff offers a variety of environmental education programs involving all aspects of Long Island’s natural history. Youngsters flock to the facility for live animal exhibits and monthly scheduled presentations featuring birds of prey, reptiles, amphibians and mammals such as opossums, rabbits, ground squirrels, porcupine and so much more! If you live in Wantagh-Seaford, there’s a good chance that you’ve been to a birthday party at Tackapausha as well. The preserve also offers nature walks, campfire circles, birdwatching programs and volunteer opportunities. If you still can’t get enough of the great outdoors, stop by one of the dozen Hempstead Town and Nassau County parks in Wantagh, Seaford and Levittown. In North Wantagh, Forest City Community Park is a favorite destination, complete with a nature trail, swimming and diving pool, paddle tennis, picnic

Here, locals play tons of sports on various fields and courts, cruise down the Wantagh Parkway bike path, skate around the roller rink, take their pooches to the dog run, practice archery and, in the winter, go sledding of course! Seaman’s Neck Park and Wantagh Park both have picturesque waterfront views.and both are excellent fishing and boating locations. Mill Pond Park in Wantagh has a 54-acre preserve just to the west of the Wantagh State Parkway, on the north side of Merrick Road. The large pond draws numerous native waterfowl.

eaford’s schools are constantly introducing new academic programs, enhancing facilities and adding new educators. The district comprises four buildings: Manor and Harbor elementary schools, Seaford Middle School, and of course, Seaford High. The arts are ingrained in the culture of each building. In some cases, artistic creativity enhances social emotional learning as hand-painted positive messages adorn walls of the middle and elementary schools. The high school marching band and colorguard participate in parades and competitions across the state and are offered a free oneweek band camp each summer. The High School football team is regularly ranked as one of the best in the county; its Varsity Boys and Girls Bowling Teams took it all the way to States this year! The high school is home to dozens of Advanced Placement Scholars annually. HP ProBook touchscreen laptops for middle and high school students have only enhanced classroom lessons in recent years. Seaford is also home to two private Catholic schools: Maria Regina and St. William The Abbot.

antagh Union Free School District students excel in every arena: in the classroom, on the athletic field, in the performing arts and through extracurricular activities. There are three elementary schools in the District — Wantagh Elementary, Mandalay and Forest Lake — as well as Wantagh Middle School and High School. Serving more than 3,000 students, the Wantagh schools continue to move
ahead with innovative programs that provide youngsters with the tools needed to achieve success in college and the ever-changing workforce. District leaders have made a concerted effort to expaned STEAM — science, technology, engineering, math and arts — programs and lab resources, such as 3-D printers and tablets; new courses including computer-coding and Audio Engineering and Music. Levittown Schools T he Levittown Union Free School District is one of the largest in Nassau County, serving more than 7,000 students from Levittown, North Wantagh and portions of northern Seaford. Wantagh-Seaford youngsters living within the district’s borders typically attend East Broadway or Lee Road elementary school before moving on to Jonas Salk Middle School and then becoming Generals at MacArthur High; a handful of children from both communities go to Gardiners Avenue Elementary as well. Special community services include both before and after-school childcare programs for elementary school-aged children. These low cost, self-sustaining programs provide elementary school children with safe, supervised childcare every day school is in session. Similarly, the district sponsors or co-sponsors low cost summer recreation, music and academic programs for those parents wishing to keep their children close to home in a productive and safe summer learning or play environment. Community needs are further met through a Saturday dance and gymnastics program and year-round Adult Continuing Education. Several classes were also recently added at the high school level, including Advanced Placement Capstone — an intensive research course — ethics, American Sign Language and others. Levittown instructors value hands-on learning, keeping students engaged in science, math, literature, the arts and more.

Dan Smith S
eaford Middle School prides itself on preserving all the tenets of a middle school philosophy. We are a teamed building with the same core of teachers assigned to a specific group of students. Math and science classes are blocked together, as are English and social studies. In the nine-period day, there is also time to explore music, art and technology. Dan Smith ASK — Advice and Support for Kids — is the school’s advisory program in which teachers work with small groups of students on timely and pertinent topics to teens beyond the curriculum. In an ever-changing education environment, we have been able to keep the programs that make a middle school special. Seaford Middle School has the trifecta for a happy principalship: enthusiastic faculty, great students and supportive parents.
The support of our Board of Education and community makes my job even better. We are a school steeped in tradition, and from September through June our calendar is filled with a multitude of activities and events that students thoroughly enjoy. Seaford’s Got Talent is an annual showcase that always draws a large and energetic crowd. The Community Read brings adults and students together to share insights and experiences with literature. Pizza With the Principal rewards students for doing the right thing and Friday activity nights feature games and sports. We also have a tradition of giving. Students participate in countless charitable acts each year such as Pennies For Patients, American Cancer Society Relay For Life, ALS Ride For Life, supplies for our troops overseas, awareness for animal conservation and more. At Seaford Middle School, our goal is to develop good citizens who think of others before themselves.

Wantagh High School Principal
Carolyn Breivogal W antagh High School sets itself apart from other Long Island high schools through its supportive environment, which encourages students to develop a positive self-image and to meet the continuing challenges of lifelong learning and responsible citizenship in our rapidly changing society. The district boats a 99 percent graduation rate for the class of 2018, with 97 percent of students pursuing higher education in universities and colleges this fall. The class of 2018 also earned roughly $2.8 million in scholarships. The high school also offers opportunities for students to enroll in the Advanced Placement Capstone Program, as well as many Advanced Placement and college-level courses. This school year, high school seniors Tyler Lucher, Brianna McCartney and Samantha Minars were named three of the nation’s 16,000 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program competition and will continue in the competition for one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships. In addition to the myriad Advanced Placement, college-level and core academic courses offered, theater, music and art also play essential roles in student success. During the summer, 20 high school photographers were invited to hang their works in the Explorations in Pinhole Photography Exhibit, held at the Long Island Children’s Museum’s KaleidoZone Gallery. The community is also invited to attend the high school theater department’s annual musical and drama, stellar orchestra, chorus and

band concerts and the districtwide art show. The high school also has a strong athletic program with student-athletes signing up for fall, winter and spring sports. During the 2017-18 school year, the boys wrestling team earned the title of New York State’s Division I Dual Meet Champions and several of the other varsity teams garnered state and regional status. The high school also has a tradition of giving back to the community. Students participate in many charity collections, such as food and clothing drives, teaching them to appreciate their community’s needs.

antagh-Seaford is home to both an animal shelter and rescue program. The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, at 3320 Beltagh Ave., is the largest municipal animal shelter in the country. All adopted pets will be spayed or neutered, receive all required inoculations and will be micro-chipped — free of charge — all summer, through Sept. 2 for the “summer of love.” The shelter also hosts adoption fairs and an annual rabies vaccination clinic in partnership with the Long Island Veterinary Medical Association. This year, Hempstead town officials translated the adoption and other shelter documents into Spanish. They also formed a partnership with LIU Post to become a training center for veterinary college students, who will treat cats and dogs in residence at the shelter under the supervision of leading doctors and professors in the field. Lastly, faithful shelter volunteers raised money for new, sturdy more comfortable beds for the dogs while they await new homes. You may view the adoptable dogs and cats online at www.toh.li/animal-shelter. To arrange a tour of the facility, call (516) 785-5220 ext. 4619 or email pettherapyandhumaneed@ tohmail.org. Last Hope, Inc. is a nonprofit dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of death-due pound, stray and abandoned animals for the past 55 years. The organization operates a dog and cat adoption center at 3300 Beltagh Ave. All rescued animals are spayed and neutered and are temperament-evaluated before adoption. Last Hope hosts fundraisers around the community and sponsors a fostering program for cats, a “fix-a-feral” initiative and offers cage sponsorship opportunities. t’s great to be a senior citizen in Wantagh and Seaford! There’s so much to do, and the best way to start is to join the Wantagh Senior Center. Although the majority of its members are from Wantagh and Seaford, the Hempstead Town-operated center is open to all town residents, age 55 and older. Drop by the building, at 1150 Seamans Neck Road, between 9 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, to sign up for a free membership. Regular activities include billiards, arts and crafts, bingo, Bridge, knitting and crocheting, board games and ceramics. For seniors looking to stay fit, there are exercise programs like tai chi, zumba and line dancing. And there are plenty of support groups for those in need. Many seniors regularly gather at the center to socialize and enjoy lunch. The center offers regular trips to local
supermarkets so residents can go food shopping. There are also health programs, such as visits from doctors, medical screenings, flu immunizations and nutrition meetings. In summer, seniors visit Lido Beach as a part of the “All Roads Lead to Lido” program. This popular 10-week program offers free health services, crafts and games. There is also a health and wellness fair there each June. The Wantagh Senior Center holds a general meeting every month with its executive board, elected by the seniors. Rosemary Truelove is the current president, and Marci Lane is the senior center’s director If you don’t have transportation, don’t fret — buses are available to and from the senior center every day. Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Democrat Laura Gillen — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
