DIRECTOR’S NOTE: My last three directing projects have been wonderful experiences working with diversely talented people, MAN OF LA MANCHA being the most recent. Musicals are a commitment to organization and keeping on schedule. Like a train rolling down the tracks, if it gets derailed it is quite an effort to get it moving again (not that it has ever happened to me). It should have been no surprise that I would look for a play featuring a small cast with a unit set to be able to focus more on the finer points of acting. Why then choose to direct David Mamet’s RACE? Putting aside all references to current events, historical background of the topic, and the need for a diverse cast this play offers a look into the dynamics of human relations in very stressful situations. Our very existence in this modern society is governed by convention as much as it is by law, perhaps more so. We assume roles, almost unwittingly, which many of us have had handed down to us from familial and neighborhood expectations. It is the brave person who will break those conventions and, to quote Mamet, “fuck” things up for everyone else. The situation of this play posed a wonderful challenge to these fine actors to give life through nuance, living each excruciating moment as it exists right then and there. The topics of race, sex, wealth, and in this instance, age are merely variables plugged into lives that were destined to cross. The intensity of this script demands preparation and a laser-focus toward “an intended target”. The slightest deviation in line delivery could send the story toward “an unintended target”. That is great fun as an actor but as human beings in real life, words and actions misunderstood or taken out of context can have devastating consequences. What I find fascinating is how these characters survive and move forward with any confidence or integrity intact. Somehow they do, somehow we do; we learn, we grow, we ultimately get along because we have too. Why then choose to direct David Mamet’s RACE? That’s a great question. Perhaps I’ll have an answer after the show if you care to join me for a glass of scotch. I feel blessed that TheatreWorks would trust us to mount this production, I feel blessed to have been able to enlist this cast to work with, I feel blessed to continue working with Leif Smith and Peter Petrino, two exceptional designers and good friends. ~Francis A. WHO’S WHO AARON KAPLAN (Jack Lawson) is elated to return to the TheatreWorks stage. He was previously seen here as James in TIMES STANDS STILL. Other TheatreWorks credits include Dennis in MAURITIUS, Jeff in LOBBY HERO, and Ray Dooley in THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE. This is Aaron’s fourth time performing Mamet on local stages; it’s been said that it’s a good thing he gets to do these shows so he can get all that cussing out! He’s been Charlie Fox in SPEED THE PLOW at The Brookfield Theater for the Arts, and Ricky Roma in GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS and Bobby in AMERICAN BUFFALO, both at The Ridgefield Theater Barn. He’s also performed in Newtown, Wilton, Westport, Sherman, and Monroe, as well as a few staged readings down in NYC. Aaron would like to thank Arnold for giving him a shot, and Kevin, Danique, and Will for coming together so quickly and wonderfully. Thanks also to Christine for being my muse, and my family for enabling my passions. And thank you for supporting local theater! KEVIN KNIGHT (Henry Brown) is excited to be making his TheatreWorks debut. Recently Kevin performed in August Wilson’s FENCES at the Ridgefield Theater Barn as well as Mel Power’s intense drama, A DANGEROUS MAN. Kevin has trained continuously with Doug Taylor for the past 30 years. He has been married for 29 years, has three children 27, 24 and 22, he is the founder and president of the K Group, a market research company. Kevin has a mix of passions that sustain him and allow

him to live life fully: Vegan foodie, barefoot runner, Tang Soo Do martial arts master, loves traveling, runs a book club for busy guys and sits on the Boards of a hospital (Burke Rehabilitation Hospital) and a charter school (New Beginnings Family Academy in Bridgeport). Kevin thanks his wife for putting up with him and supporting him during the weeks leading up to performance and he thanks a talented cast and director for their love and support. WILL JEFFRIES (Charles Strickland) returns to the TheatreWorks stage where he appeared in TIME STANDS STILL. Entering his 50th year in the theatre, Will is a retired professional actor with a career on stage, television and film spanning over 25 years. Among many other credits, he appeared on NYC stages in two segments of TORCH SONG TRILOGY, by and with Harvey Fierstein; in Brian Friels VOLUNTEERS, with John Goodman, and many more. In Los Angeles, he co-starred with Ricardo Montalban, Stewart Granger, and Lynn Redgrave in DON JUAN IN HELL. He had recurring roles on the series VALERIE/THE HOGAN FAMILY with Valerie Harper, Sandy Duncan and Jason Bateman, ONE WEST WAIKIKI, with Cheryl Ladd, and was the very evil Damon Grenville on GENERAL HOSPITAL. He guest starred on dozens of other series, as well. On local stages he has appeared in CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, THE COCKTAIL HOUR, SLEUTH, LEND ME A TENOR, A TIME TO KILL, DEATH OF A SALESMAN, ALL MY SONS, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, A FEW GOOD MEN, OTHER DESERT CITIES, and many more. He has directed A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, ENTER LAUGHING, THAT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON, Edward Albees THREE TALL WOMEN and BENT, which won the Onstage Award as BEST PLAY of the year in Connecticut. Will would like to thank his sons, Christian and Dash for their love and support, and especially his wife Mare, whose understanding of the art which compels him is beyond generous, and whose love is everything. DANIQUE ASHLEY (Susan) is an undergraduate Theatre Performance major at Western Connecticut State University. This is her first performance with TheatreWorks New Milford. Her past credits include: RAGTIME (Sarah) with Trumbull Youth Association and PETER PAN: REIMAGINED (Tiger Lily) with New Paradigm Theatre. She would like to thank her family for all of their support, and those involved in Race for making this such a rewarding experience. WHO’S WHO Leif Smith (Set Design) returns to TheatreWorks as set designer for MAN OF LA MANCHA after lighting PROOF earlier this season, and I DO! DO! and ANIMAL FARM last season. Leif has worked extensively with Mr Daley for a generation on innumerable projects. “I want to thank Kate Moncuse for making the paint work and Peter Petrino for tolerating the obstructions. It’s a pleasure to work with the entire team.” PETER PETRINO (Lighting Designer) is pleased to return to TheatreWorks where he recently created the lighting designs for MAN OF LA MANCHA, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN and ZOMBIE PROM. Peter has been the resident designer for the Caramoor Center for Music and Art since 1996. Regionally, Peter has designed shows for numerous theatre companies, including Penguin Rep, Curtain Call, Inc,.Seven Angels Theater, The Century Center for Performing Arts, The Vortex Theater Company, Danbury Actor’s Theater, Wilton Playshop, The Schoolhouse Theater, Fleetwood Stage, and San Juan Island PAC. Peter also designs for dance companies, including the Westchester Ballet Company, Logrea Dance Academy, and East Coast Youth Ballet. His television credits include NBCSports, Court TV, ESPN, and MetroArts Thirteen. He has designed special events for the Connecticut Republican Committee, Jacob Burns Film Center, Pepsico, Buick Classic, and Gannett Newspapers. FRANCIS A. DALEY (Director) finished strike the set for MAN OF LA MANCHA while finishing his casting for this production to begin rehearsals after a one-week hiatus. Previous credits at TheatreWorks include acting roles in K2 as Harold, Keesburg in DEVOUR THE SNOW, and Liberty Valance in THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALENCE. Directing credits at TheatreWorks include the aforementioned MAN OF LA MANCHA, COBB, and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.
