Making the most out of this book. They say that newspapers and magazines are under threat from the internet, but I believe that books will be here forever. That is why, after seventeen years of publishing on the 'net and similar media, I have decided to bring a collection of my material to the printed page. Even if I am utilising a self-publishing print-on-demand website to create this first edition of "Today In Cricket"! The formula for the main body of this book is fairly simple. Since 1992 I have assembled data about major events in the history of the sport of cricket, including birth and death dates of prominent players, particularly Test and one-day international cricketers. I have used the limitations of 1990's online text presentation to give my own concise online summary of each person or event.
Sometimes
quirky, occasionally witty, sometimes dry. A bit like the game itself. There may be other compilations of daily ephemera about cricket, but with "Today In Cricket" I
give you my
personal, and I must say, Australianised, interpretation of events. I bring four decades of experience as a follower of

the game, including one intense period from 1998 to 2001 when I scrutinised the world's cricketing news every day in producing Cricinfo's email newsletter service. There are close to six thousand entries in the book. Most of the events commemorated relate to landmark events on the playing field rather than off it. There are exceptions where an off-field event of note (for example, Hansie Cronje's sensational resignation as South African captain in 2000) can be identified with a particular date. Dates of birth and death for all Test players are noted. Many oneday international players without Test experience are also included, as are a number of women who have played at Test or World Cup level. There has to be a cut-off date for the publication of any book. The newest event in the 2010 edition of "Today In Cricket" is the Champions League Twenty20 final on October 23, 2009. (The oldest event, incidentally, is Kent's victory over England in the first game of "first-class" cricket on June 18, 1744.) "Today In Cricket" should not be treated as an encyclopaedia, nor as a text book of cricketing history. It is something that I hope you will come back to throughout Page 12 - Making the most out of this book.
the year for amusement, pleasure, and perhaps discussion. If you do happen to read it from cover to cover I'll be thrilled, but don't worry I won't be asking questions later! I hope you enjoy reading "Today In Cricket" as much as I have enjoyed the many years in bringing it to print reality. Rick Eyre Sydney 24 October 2009
